Interim is a short collection of poems written by Des Spicer-Orak, a queer mixed Palauan poet from the Pacific Northwest. Interim signifies the experiences between life and death. Exploring the intersections of identity, Interim captures the weight of culture, religion, climate crises, rejection, and connection. This book highlights the duality that exists in all things, and intentionally emphasizes the connection between grief and growth. Through the lens of various relationships, Interim tells a story of hurt and healing. At the heart of these poems is the fight for existence, reclamation, and resistance.
Fair warning, this one is... oof. What a book. What, a, BOOK. It’s little but it packs a PUNCH. I had to take my time with it, I really did. I had to go back and reread some of the poems over and over again. I had to close it and just sit, staring at my desk, or frantically grab my phone and text a passage to someone. There are lines in here that I would ink on my skin, a permanent reminder that someone else has felt this, walked that, and come out on top, all the more for it. September was glorious, The Fisherman too. Birth, Time, Grief hit me like a truck. I love them. It’s all fantastic.
this book is stunningly and thoughtfully crafted. Des's words feel like the ocean- rhythmic and smooth like the ocean, yet uncompromising and powerful. beautiful.
