Charity has a past full of dark secrets that she keeps buried deep inside her cold heart. Samantha didn’t used to have any secrets, but that’s all about to change. And Roy, who seems to be caught in the middle, may have a haunting past of his own. When the small town they live in is hit with a devastating flood, the isolation and danger they must face will lead the three of them down a path they can never return from. One of them will have to go, for the others to survive. THEY ALL HAD A SECRET is the sequel to THEY ALL HAD A REASON.

Okay so honestly book 1 is essentially just a set up for the series! I liked this one a lot more than the first because you find out WHO the recurring character is! Honestly I really like this take a lot, you don’t usually get to follow the murderer essentially on the run, it was refreshing!!
Liked the psycho serial killer more than both of the good guys. Samantha is insanely whiny and irritating and Roy is uninteresting. Hope Charity gets away with it
In Book 1, readers were just told how terrible Bellany was and in book 2, we find out how truly horrible she really is. Bellany is now using the name Charity and she has designs to make sure an elderly woman(Veronica) meets her demise so she can shack up with Veronica's grandson, Roy. But Roy's girlfriend sees through Charity's act and it promises to be quite the showdown. Not to mention that there is a true crime podcaster named C.J. on the hunt to find Bellany.
Great villian and those last number of chapters had me on the edge of my seat.
At the end of Book #1, we discovered that Bellamy along with the help of Quentin, had faked her murder, killed someone else and escaped from their small hometown, and living under a pseudonym. Now in Book #2 Bellamy has changed her name to Charity and living in a small town at the local hotel and cleaning for freeboard/food etc. She also has gotten rid of Quentin and has a new plan in action. The sole heir to the hotel and a massive fortune is Roy - Veronica's grandson. Charity plans to get him to fall in love with her and manipulate her way into the fortune. Her plan would be simple, but Roy has a sort of girlfriend Samantha who is suspicious of Charity and won't let her get her claws into Roy. As the book goes along, Charity will also uncover some dark secrets that Veronica is hiding - one to do with Joshua Iverson's son Liam and the other to do with the Tripps son. Meanwhile, it looks like not only Quentin has tracked Bellamy down and wants his revenge on her, but also CJ who is from her hometown and has been tracking her movements and covering her on his podcast about unsolved crimes and fugitives on the run. Does Bellamy / Charity's run come to an end or has she got another ace up her sleeve and will stay one step ahead of everybody. Find out in Book #2 They All Had a Secret by Michele Leathers and stay tuned for Book #3 They All Had a Fear. This series is great for all fans of YA thrillers from authors like Karen McManus, Sara Shepard, and Natalie D. Richards.
Obviously still not the greatest book i’ve read but it’s definitely an improvement from the first book - I might still continue with the series i’m not sure If i care for the characters enough but we’ll see
This book follows Bellany has she continues to scam and manipulate people in a new town. Going by the name Charity, she sets her sight on Roy and his Grandmothers’s fortune and she won’t stop at anything to get it. Trying to ruin his relationship with his girlfriend Samantha doesn’t come easy as she feel as if something is off with the new girl in town that is now working and living at her boyfriend’s family’s hotel. I love every second of this book. I couldn’t put it down. 10/10 highly recommend!!
This one took awhile to take off but I loved that one of the characters turned up in this story to cause havoc. It’s a solid 3.5/5 but it rounds to 4. It’s good for a teen/young adult book.
Manipulation, Secrets, Diabolical Characters, and a Flood 🤷🏻♀️
Ugh!😫
This BOOK!
I seriously don’t didn’t know if I was going to make it to the end!
It grated in my nerves.
But!
At the same time, is hilariously OVER.THE. TOP!!!
You just can’t look away!!!
Seriously!
Was it written by fifteen years olds playing around on ChatGPT ???
The second book in this series, and it continues with what happened to Bellany and Quentin, from the first book, when they disappeared
Well.
Bellany is now calling herself Charity and Quentin is no longer in the picture.
( for a bit )
As Charity, she has made herself resourceful, by changing her appearance, and demeaning herself by SHOCKER! …waitressing in a dive of a restaurant in a small town called Chehalis.
Well,
That’s until she manoeuvres her way into working at a slightly less dive-y Hotel. Hilltop Manor.
This is all part of her “Big Plan”
Ya see, the owner, Veronica.
Think crotchety, incredibly wealthy ( think millions ) Grandma.
But, you wouldn’t know it as she lives a very average life, with her candy addiction, and health issues
So “Charity” has plans to get her hands on, not only the money, but on Veronica’s gorgeous house, and seventeen year old, grandson, eighteen year old Roy.
ROY….
What a dim bulb he is at times.
Hot AF! Apparently, but too sweet, and trusting, for his own good, so enamoured with Charity’s outer appearance, and her manipulative ways, he doesn’t stand a chance.
Her long neck, her hair, her lips, her skin…Blah!, Blah!, Blah!
Then he has a WTF! Moment and, followed up with a…
“ What am I doing?. I’m with Samantha”
Yep!
Samantha Roy’s newly minted, local girlfriend, it’s going to be up to her to uncover the deeds of the conniving Charity.
Charity as we have learnt from the first book, is an A grade sociopathic, biatch
Able to read peoples personalities and reel them in, using her feminine wiles, and handy with heavy objects to the back of the head and a car.
Good Luck! Samantha and Roy 🫡
BUT!
Thing are not so clear cut in the Roy ,Samantha relationship yet because, the author decides to introduce a little love triangle all of a sudden
Despite Roy unable to stop checking out Charity ( Bellany)
He’s let off the hooks a little because,
As soon as Roy starts having THESE thoughts, …
All of a sudden…. BOM!!!
Samantha Is starting to check out her friend Tracy’s younger brother Spike!!! 😂🤷🏻♀️
Suddenly realising what a “glow up” he’s had in the looks department.
Aware of her growing attraction to the young boy ( by two years ) it STILL leads to her dancing with him in a diner car park, for no apparent reason other than, he played her her favourite Taylor Swift song 🤷🏻♀️
Just as we, the reader, are being informed that Charity ( Bellany ), has used her conniving ways to photoshop a picture of Sam and Spike putting the two of them together, sending it to ROY!
While doing exactly the same thing to Samatha with her and Roy!
WHAT’s GOING ON !!!!
This story jumps from different characters POV’s, quick as a flash with drama, coming out of nowhere. YOUR HEAD IS GOING TO SPIN!
Character development???
What character development?
They are DEVOLVING!!!
This, THIS! introspective thought from Samantha’s inner monologue….
“If Roy and I end up getting married one day, we’ll be financially set. Veronica is loaded and he’s the sole heir to her fortune. Oh gosh, what am I thinking? Why am I dwelling on money and not love? Isn’t love all that matters?”
Honestly. 🤚
The Samantha inner monologues are next level silly…
“Tracy’s probably right. I should break up with him. Wait, no. I don’t want to break up with him. Ugh. I wish I knew what to do.”
Despite these gems, the villain in this story is placed firmly at Charity/Bellany’s feet.
This girl has no, and I mean NO empathy for others.
She is conceit, self centred, and manipulative. Thoughts like this …
“What boy wouldn’t fall in love with a girl like me? Not only am I beautiful, but I’m charitable, just like my name says.”
Only when it benefits her own appearance
So.
After all this, what event is going to culminate, and bring this motley group together.
If a said a flood, of biblical proportions, that threatens to put the town under water, would that suffice? 😂
Perhaps throw in a random gun for good measure?
And I’m STILL only at 54% 😫
The further I go into this plot? The more bazaar it gets
Because there is also a sub, plot about a boy, Liam who disappeared in the town
And suspicion is also raised surrounding Roy’s biological parents actually are.
( This plot is also a doozy )
So, the story culminates with the raising flood waters, people going missing and others showing up.
A surprise appearance from an earlier character out to do sinister deeds, and a motley group trudging through the rain soaked Forrest looking for Grandma and Samantha.
I was super excited to get approved for this one because the description was right up my alley. The author’s name rang a bell, but I couldn’t place it… until I started reading and suddenly things felt familiar.
Turns out this is book two in the They All Had a Reason series—something that was not mentioned on the NetGalley listing. Thankfully, they can be read as standalones. The series was previously self-published, which explains why I recognized it: I’d picked up book one after seeing it on BookTok. Sourcebooks Fire is now republishing the series, with book three coming in 2026.
Admittedly, I wasn’t a fan of book one (a firm 2⭐️ from me), but I went into this truly wanting to give it a fair shot. And while I did like it better than the first, I still struggled with the choppy prose and some very questionable plot development. The beginning sets things up with solid detail, but then it takes a nose dive straight into the implausible. It feels like the author reaches a certain point, decides “okay, time to wrap this up,” and speeds through the climax and ending—losing all the fluidity built in act one.
And while the content skews older, the writing itself reads more like middle grade. Not in a charming way, either—it’s overly simplified to the point where it feels like it’s talking down to the intended teen audience, which I don’t love.
So while I can’t recommend this for adult readers—even those who love YA—I do think younger teens or mature middle grade readers may enjoy it. One last note: even though the books technically stand alone, there is an ongoing thread that runs through the series. You can read them individually, but you won’t get the full picture unless you read all of them.
Overall: better than book one, but still not quite hitting the mark for me.
I was fortunate to receive a complimentary eARC from Sourcebooks Fire via NetGalley, which gave me the opportunity to share my voluntary thoughts.
How I Rate Because I mostly read ARCs, I focus on how I think fellow readers with similar tastes will respond. I sometimes round up or down based on pacing, prose, or overall impact, and I try to keep my personal preferences from weighing too heavily.
⭐️ 1 Star – Finished, but not for me as it has way too many issues; I never DNF ARCs but would have had it not been one. ⭐️⭐️ 2 Stars – Struggled due to writing, content, or editing issues. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 Stars – Decent read with untapped potential; recommend with some reservations. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Stars – Really enjoyed it and would recommend for several reasons. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars – Exceptional; lingers in my mind well after reading. A story I’d gladly revisit.
Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
“They All Had a Secret” picks up immediately where the first book left off in Leathers’ series, and while still firmly rooted in YA melodrama, this sequel feels a bit sharper, darker, and more confident than its predecessor.
We follow Bellamy who is now reinvented as Charity after faking her death, committing murder, and disappearing into a new small town under a stolen identity. From the start, Charity is manipulative, calculated, and unquestionably the villain of her own story. She’s deeply unlikable, but that’s part of what makes her perspective so fascinating. Her traumatic past and strained relationship with her mother provide just enough psychological depth to make her actions disturbing rather than cartoonish.
Charity quickly sets her sights on Roy, the sweet and naïve heir to a hotel fortune. Her plan? Destroy his existing relationship with Samantha, win his affection, and eventually take everything from his family. The early chapters include plenty of standard YA tension with jealousy, relationship drama, and insecurity, which can feel predictable at times, and the dialogue occasionally reads younger than the characters’ actual ages.
But once the story introduces rising tension with a sudden flood, buried family secrets, and the return of faces from Charity’s past, the pace picks up dramatically. Not only is someone tracking her through a true-crime podcast, but someone else from her past may be hunting her down. These twists help steer the plot away from the initial high-school drama tone and more firmly into thriller territory.
While this installment does resolve several lingering mysteries, some moments, especially toward the emotional conclusion, feel rushed or wrapped up a bit too neatly. Still, a few unanswered questions and one ambiguous character ending clearly pave the way for the next book. The final revelation surrounding Roy’s family and the uncertain circumstances around Veronica’s death leave just enough intrigue to keep you invested.
Overall, “They All Had a Secret” is a fast-paced, addictive YA thriller. The writing is simple, the plot moves quickly, and the morally messy characters make the chaos entertaining, even when you’re frustrated with their choices. While not flawless, it’s a definite improvement from book one and a satisfying setup for what promises to be an even wilder book three.
This one was also a pretty good read I’m giving it four stars because it felt better paced than the first one. I didn’t feel like everything just rushed to conclusion like the first one this one took it’s time and didn’t leave too many loose ends.
I thought I couldn’t stand Bellany in the first book but boy did she get under my skin in this one. She takes on the persona of Charity.. the girl she killed in book one. She thought the name would be fitting since she wanted to come off as this sweet, innocent and charitable girl.
Right from the beginning she tricks people into falling under her spell when she convinced the owner of the Diner she works at Jessy to help her find a place to stay. He then turns to Veronica the owner of a hotel and campground and she agrees to let her stay in one of the rooms in exchange for working at the hotel some cleaning rooms. That’s where she meets Roy Veronica’s grandson and her next victim. She quickly realizes how much money Veronica has and how sweet and gullible Roy is and you learn of her plan to get rid of his grandmother and make him fall in love with her.
It also hints at her murdering her boyfriend Quentin because he didn’t want to follow along with her plans and had pushed her down. She kept referring to him as violent and unhinged.
Throughout the book she continues to try to win over Roy and separate him and his girlfriend Savannah which almost works.
Overall I was surprised by the way this book went I wasn’t expecting some of the turns it took like finding out Quentin was actually alive and going along with her plans. The author did well stringing along the idea he was dead.
But I think my biggest curiosity is who actually Killed Veronica if Charity (Bellany) didn’t. My suspicion is the couple Mr and Mrs Smith. I find it odd that they would randomly blurt out to a stranger about how Victoria took their son and is blackmailing them to keep quiet. It just doesn’t make sense they would trust someone so new to town so I’m wondering if they did it and think they can take advantage of a “sweet innocent girl”
I’m mad that Bellany got away once again but I’m curious to see where her journey leads to next.

This is the second book to the “They All Had a Reason” series and I considered not reading it because of the last book. I gave the last 2 stars and the book was okay. If I read that book alone, I would recommend it. However this book was much more enjoyable
One of the nice things about this book was how we were able to see Bellany’s point of view. We were able to see why she did what she did. It was nice seeing that. I also very much enjoyed the act “Charity” put on. That whole super happy and nice girl act was very entertaining for me. Although Bellany is a murder and criminal, she is a character that I like, and I’m curious to see what happens to her in her next book.
I wouldn’t say that this book had any major plot twists, which is fine for me. Not every book needs one.
And for all of the other characters, none of them quite stood out for me and became my favorite. I wouldn’t also say that I hated them. All of them were okay. But obviously there were some parts where I didn’t like Spike.
Spike knew that Samantha had a boyfriend but he still tried to get with her. He tried to romantic stuff with her. And the part wheee she goes missing and the way Spiker treats Roy is what makes me dislike him. But other than those parts, he isn’t a major character.
I am surprised on how much I liked this book compared to the last one. I think I’m going to read the 3rd book and I’ll see how that goes.

THEY ALL HAD A SECRET by Michele Leathers (Jan 20, 2026)
Thank you Netgalley and Sourcebooks Fire for the earc
Three people's lives intersect as they each grapple with secrets. Charity has a dark past, one that she plans to keep hidden. Whe flooding isolates her with Samantha and Roy, she must fight to keep ber secrets hidden---as they're led down a path of destruction and the possibility of d*ath. THEY ALL HAD A SECRET is a YA thriller---honestly it's pretty lacking in that department. From the rollercoaster that THEY ALL HAD A REASON HAD, this was kind of a let down. In so many ways. Almost half through and nothing was happening. Nothing entirely thrilling, no d*ad bodies like in book one, and there were a ton of pov's that didn't seem necessary. You know one or two---I get it. More than that, especially when the chapters are short, meaning the pov's are short, it seemed overdone. I stuck around in this because I really want continue with this series. I felt like this was a filler book, something to bridge a connection between book one and book three. Don't get me wrong, THEY ALL HAD A SECRET eventually got thrilling... The ending of this offered a lot. Once the 80% mark hit, the action was nonstop as well as the drama. I will be continuing with this series because there is still a lot of unanswered things, and I hope book three has everything that was missing from this.
I read the first book in this series before this one. This book is more of the same what I love about this series so far is obviously the mystery aspect of it but one technique I really love is how the book switches perspectives in almost every chapter, and most if not all chapters are 7 pages or less so the book is always interesting. I also really liked that the climax was at the very end and everything tied together every single thing I was wondering got answered within the last 25 pages. The book follows around Charity who was in the last book as well so I like that Michele Lethers kept at least one of the characters the same, and that makes it feel like just an extension of the first book in the series. I loved the idea of changing Bellany's name to Charity and essentially making her a totally different person but her thoughts are the exact same which makes her character still feel very authentic to her character in the first book. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes mystery novels because this series is one of the best mystery novel series I have read so far in my life.
Charity/Bellany - I liked her and feel like she is a character you love to hate, if you know what I mean. She is also a psycho.
Roy - kind of bland, but I liked that he had a back story and was still somewhat 3d
Sammantha - I think she has some jealousy issues, but like a lot of 17-year-olds do.
Veronica - I couldn't picture her (along with other characters, but especially her), also, she should have retired. Also, maybe I read this wrong, but was she not being blackmailed for adoption? It seems like Mrs. Whatever Her Name Is consented to have Roy sold.
Overall writing - I liked the writing, but soooo many grammar mistakes. They spelled Samantha's name wrong and more. Also, what was happening with how the indenting changed randomly?
Plot - the beginning was boring, and I felt like the part where they were looking in the rain was too dragged out.
Conclusion - though I have been critical, I thought this was a good book, considering I rated it 4 stars. Thanks for reading.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
I wish I had known going in that this was part of a series, because it would’ve filled in a few gaps for me. That said, I still really enjoyed this book. It was a short, fast paced read and so easy to get through that it became kind of addictive.
Charity was especially compelling; she had everyone wrapped around her finger, perfectly playing the innocent role while clearly being quite wicked underneath. As for the characters overall, they were a bit hit or miss for me. Many of them weren’t exactly good people, but there were a few I genuinely felt sorry for, which added to the tension and intrigue.
I’m definitely interested in continuing the series. The story was engaging enough that I now feel the need to go back and read the first book so I can fully understand who I’m really dealing with.

This is the second book in this mystery series. The story picks up where the first one left off. This is an appropriate YA murder mystery series so far. No sex, no bad language - just the whole murder thing. This is a solid 3.2 for me, probably a four or five star read for it’s intended audience, which I am not.
This is a quick and easy read and the story is undeniably fun and kept me engaged from the first page to the last.
The author still faces challenges in creating believable likable characters. This aspect can be somewhat distracting - at least it has been for me in the beginning chapters of the last two books. It’s a fun read in spite of that.
I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series - and probably all seven of them. It’s just fun. These books seem like they would be good if you’re in a reading slump.
I was 1000% rooting for the villain. Every single "good" character was annoying as fuck and I just wanted them to go away. The villain, on the other hand? Oh, she's fun. Machiavellian, sure, but fun.
While this book is less juvenile than the first, and overall kind of better, actually, it is still too-over-the-top at times (the declarations of love are always cheesy and poorly done, both in this book and the last one. Every time a character would declare their love for another, I would just roll my eyes in annoyance), but I have high hopes for the third one.
This was the second book in her series. I found this slightly more intriguing. (Spoilers ahead).
Bellamy leaves NC and moves to Chehalis, Washington. This intrigues me as someone raised in this area of Washington State. How did Michele Leathers choose Chehalis? She must have some ties to this area.
Back to Bellamy, she reinvents herself as a lady named Charity. She tells everyone that she is on the run from an abusive relationship and prefers to stay quiet and out of site. However, when she meets Roy she decides that she wants him and the fortune that he will inherit upon the death of his grandmother.
There are many twists and turns in this book. Everything from Charity, to the grandmother, Samantha (Roy's GF), and of course Roy himself. What does Roy know? Does Charity Succeed?
The thriller/mystery aspect of this story were great! And that's with us getting the villain's pov! So we already know who the criminal is, but the author keeps us on our toes as her plans change and characters react. I had fun guessing when Bellany would be found out. Once again, there is a cliffhanger ending so yeah.... But this didn't get 5 stars because unlike book 1 where I liked Charlotte, I didn't love the other MCs. They were all so easily manipulated and gullible and they all were cheaters. I cheating of any kind, and while Roy didn't physically act on it, he sure was thinking about it. He and Samantha don't really seem like a real couple. But that aside I did enjoy the ups and downs of the mysteries going on 😊
I got into this pretty quickly, as soon as I knew who Charity was I was hooked immediately.
That being said, I hate Charity, she’s rude and conniving. She does whatever she wants and only thinks of herself and what she can gain. The other characters are kinda annoying, but if I had to choose a favourite, it would be Roy.
I did guess one of the plot twists very early on, it was a little obvious but I still enjoyed the story and the other twists I wasn’t expecting.
As much as I didn’t like Charity, it was interesting to follow her being on the run, I haven’t read a book with that kind of plot before and I really liked it.
Overall, it was a good book, I’m excited to start the third and see if a certain character shows up again.
I was left confused, intrigued, and surprised by this book. I wish I had read the first book in the series (in fact, I had no idea this was the second book until I started reading) as it would have provided more context for me and would have made the beginning of the book easier to understand. I have to say, my interest in the plot increased as the plot progressed. The POVs were easy enough to distinguish and follow along - the ending itself wasn't as suspenseful as it was leading up to be, which made the ending boring but I'm interested in continuing this series so it was a good read overall.
Thank you to Michele Leathers, Sourcebooks Fire, and NetGalley for providing me with an eARC of this book.
I don't find this sequel as good as the original, even though the sociopath perspective is cool to read. I guess I just found more errors in this edition that took me out of it? I also didn't enjoy this storyline quite as much; I knew who the villain was, knew who was going to die, etc.
My biggest qualm is that 'Charity' doesn't quite fit the unreliable narrator bill. Obviously, she is a liar within her world, but some of the things she leaves out of what are presumably her own thoughts feel too convenient. It left 'Mason' feeling more like a deus ex machina than a recurring character.
This didn't exactly make me want to continue the series, but I probably will just because.
"...we're both going to be left with matching scars engraved on our souls forever."
This book was really good, just like the first one. I loved the way the POV was constantly changing between the characters. this gives the characters more depth and helps you really understand just what they are thinking and experiencing. The reason I'm only giving this book 4 stars is because the beginning was very slow but i feel as though it was needed. the slow start really gives you time to question what's going to happen next and make predictions. I recommend this book. you need to read the first one first though.
