The team is everything. The team is sacred. And I have found mine.
We've done the impossible: we escaped the Pit.
We've fled to the Ruined Lands to hide from the Warden, the Empire's bounty hunters and to make certain I don't give birth to a Pit-bred monster. ScatheFire is alive, but his soul somewhere else. And Atrament has some pretty crazy ideas about what I am, and how to stabilize my magic once and for all.
But our survival and my magic means nothing, because the price of all of it has turned the Fells into criminals, not heroes. They've paid for my freedom with their own.
To clear our names, we'll have to put together the pieces of Atrament's past, the truth about what I really am, and force someone powerful to answer for all of it.
We're on the run and we're on the hunt, and we can't afford a single mistake, or we'll all end up back in the Pit.
4.25 ⭐️/4 🌶️—A great continuation of a very weird (but really unique) series. The author does an amazing job with characterization and relationship building. As of 2025, the last two books haven’t been released in the series, which is unfortunate because it is a compelling series and I want to know how it ends.
The concept of this series feels original and brilliant. I love the story and following these characters through their turmoil.
The setting continues to be rich and vibrant and feels alive. The characters seem dynamic and true to thier nature but still able to evolve.
There are still typos and a lot or repetition throughout but I think I might just be used to it now. It doesn't really bother me anymore.
The other thing that doesn't knock it out if the park for me is a little bit of lack of emotional investment. I don't really know what I'm rooting for or who the actual enemy is. I know who sone people are that have done somethings but im missing that specific focus for my anger. Who is the bad guy? Who am I supposed to loat? Who do I want the good guys to beat? I want them to win but win what? It's still unclear.
Also, because I know this is important to many. This is very low steam. Like barely even flirting. This is often very important for me in books but I haven't missed it in this case.
Even though they're finally out of the prison, the book was boring. It was honestly more interesting to read about them in prison than it was to read about them riding around the wastelands looking for things. I originally liked that it was pretty slow burn but what makes slow burn good is the development of the relationships. There was no emotional development here. They try to make her a shard and then realize they can sense each other so she's actually their heart and that's basically all that happens. And ScatheFire was gone the entire last book so my expectation was that their reunion would be amazing and she basically cried and hugged him when he came back and then it was never mentioned again and he went back to how he was before. Like??? She was the only one on the team who wouldn't leave him behind and there's no emotional pay-off on either side to show for it! I also really hated how the heroine's POV was done in first person but the other POVs were done in third person; it was very jarring. I'm done with this series.
K.M Hade has written an amazing third book in the Cruelly Made series.
Escape, friendship, romance, family tension and long held secrets are all explored with some explosive results.
The MC has had some horrific experiences and it could have left her bitter and resentful, but she is such a well written character that she never seems one dimensional and only grows in strength throughout the series and is ever hopeful of acceptance and love.
I cannot wait for the fourth book in the series to see the conclusion of this story, so much so I keep checking Amazon to see if it’s up for pre-order.
Do yourself a favour and read this series from the start, it may be slow burn but what a story!
This book needs every pregnancy end/loss trigger warning imaginable, but I still loved the book and can't wait for the next one. The world explaining has improved a lot since book 1, but I still have questions about this world and the war in particular (like, how can the blight have mortal allies without those allies giving in to the blight?). I'm also still obsessed with the banter between the main characters, and I love how the harem members are distinct people with different reactions to things.
Can't really gush enough about this series! Each book is a little better than the last and I don't know how that's even possible!! Crystal\Pebbles has such a heart breaking life that she doesn't dwell on. She is all about the people she cares about and will do absolutely anything for each of them. Such a fascinating character! Loved it, looking forward to more!
