What an interesting story! It manages to be both very engaging (I found myself quite invested in knowing what happened in each arc) and yet off-putting. The author wrote perhaps one of the most pessimistic, immoral, nihilistic love stories I've ever read. The philosophy of the people in it reminded me a bit of the selfishness and "kill-the-world" mentality of The Three Body Problem. It's like a messed up version of Born To Be Rebellious.

I get the feeling that the author feels like they've been wronged at some point in their life. Starting in the 3rd arc, the author very accurately captures some of the helpless fury I remember feeling when I was trapped in an awful job where I was overworked, underappreciated, and inadequately trained but expected to perform like a seasoned employee. At that point in time, I remember feeling so wronged, needing the support of my partner to pull me up from the misery and remind me of my worth. The frustration bled into everything, not just work - I remember feeling like the world owed me something. This is what the Mc is feeling, being forced to act a villain until he actually becomes one. Learning to treat the fictional characters without compassion until it becomes his actual nature. This progression, and the books depressing acceptance of it, is honestly a bit startling. I'm used to books that will imagine a light at the end of the tunnel of misery, or whisper some message of hope for people who feel the same way. I'm used to books that show us the idealized way of dealing with the injustice in the world because the reality can sometimes feel so disheartening. I feel like we need those books to remind us of the beautiful possibilities when we are often faced with the ugly reality. I'm not sure I need the message in this book, which focuses on how unconditional love can drive people to act better and constrain our destructive impulses, but only if the love accepts these impulses to begin with.

Another interesting point that this novel makes is that there is no real "right" or "wrong", just different perspectives and interests. I agree with this to some extent - if something seems unarguable, it's probably just because the argument has been silenced or strawman'ed. However, the way this story drives home that point is so depressing. I end up feeling very bad for the protagonists and the passerby's in this story. They haven't done anything inexcusable, they're honestly sometimes behaving more sensibly than the Mc, but they are going to be crushed because they're opposite the mc's mission.

I found myself wanting to know more about the binding love between the Mc and ml. There's no resolution or real insight into why the ml so faithfully defends the Mc and loves the Mc despite him developing a completely different personality. They have a childhood crush, which I find to be the most illogical kind of love. Especially if the two people haven't even been around each other for over a decade. That kind of love feels more like a lovely dream than actually love.

All morals aside, I think the ending was very abrupt, confusing, and disappointing in terms of the world building. Perhaps the author also couldn't wait to see the end of the world they built.
