You’ve got to fight for everything when you start with nothing. Susan Knight has a good life. So she turns a blind eye to the gambling winnings her husband Donny puts through the books at her salon. After all, he needs some way to unwind. At work, he is headteacher at Second Chance, an alternative provision school for kids who have nowhere else to go. Being the headteacher gives Donny respect, money, and charm. But respect can be lost, money can be stolen and charm can only go so far. The kids at the school all have a story to tell – as do the staff. Drugs, debt, violence and threat are part of their everyday lives. Donny’s got this far by never playing by the rules. But to keep winning, you have to keep chancing it all. To stay at the top means risking everything. Susan knows Donny walks a fine line – but if he stumbles too far on the wrong side of the tracks can she stand by him? And for Donny, if he loses Susan, he knows he might be pulled back into the life that’s been waiting for him all this time…

I loved this book it was so easy to get into but kept me on the edge of my seat throughout whilst watching how Ged's life would progress.

Donny Knight is the head of the school for troubled called "Second chance" for children that have fallen out of the mainstream.
He is a very confident attractive man whom all of the students respect and who thinks anything is possible. Married to Susan he was caught having an affair for which he is now regretful He would give her the world if he could to win back her trust.

One of the students is Ged he lives with his mum and is a bit of a loner who just wants his dad out of prison, so they can become a family again, but his mum has had enough and doesn't want him anywhere near their lives.

Frankie another student who is cocksure takes Ged under his wing but soon turns him into drug peddling.

Nancy is a prolific runaway and she and Ged form a friendship/relationship, she doesn't like Frankie and watches him like a hawk when he is around Ged.

Tina one of the teachers so badly wants a baby but it isn't happening, on top of that her partner has saddled her with his children who are a nightmare.
Such a great book, and a good story. A surprise at the end making it a worthwhile book to read.

Well done Karen. xx

So, now it's official.... I'm a fan of Karen Woods. I'll be looking for more but hopefully will see a follow up to this one.

The ending got me. I did not see that coming.

It's based in Manchester UK. it's gripping and definitely a page turner. I could not put it down. I took it everywhere.

Yes, I would recommend this book. But be aware it should come with a warning because you just can not put it down. All you want to do is turn the page. Excellent read.

Enjoy!

my 1st book buy this author in quite a few years and very much enjoyed . Susan knight is married to Donny they have a good life but he had an affair and she not trust him at all as Donny is very attractive and spends to much time in the bathroom she owns her own hair salon and Donny is a headmaster at the pupil referral school in Moston for children with problems , Donny likes the fine things in life , meet Ged a very troubled boy who just wants to see his dad in prison his mum wont let him . Chelsea who has a few problem . Nancy who keeps running away from home and Frankie who always has money . Frankie befriends Ged but he starts to use Ged for a drug peddler and Nancy and Ged form a relationship , one of the teachers Tina has her own problems at home .and the new teacher Melanie peters is going to cause a lot of problems for Donny how this story come s together is just brilliant who is the top drug man ? i so so recommend

Love kimberley chambers?, the this author Is definitely for you

Another mind blowing read from Karen woods!she just brilliant. The media always say she's the Manchester version of Martina, but in my opinion, martina is overated and gone downhill ,kimberley is now in her place, and Karen is the Queen of Manchester.
I did not expect the outcome of this book and that's what I love about Karen, you don't see it till it's happened ,
This book is about donny who is head of basically a pupil reveral unit ,and tells the story of Ged,Frankie and Nancy, it involves county lining and suspicious wives,in my opinion only downside was it finshed too quick. Definitely bag yourself a read of this !!!

The story of multiple individuals who have found themselves on the wrong side of the law. "You’ve got to fight for everything when you start with nothing".

Picture the roots of a plant heading in all different directions - That's how many storylines this book has, all interconnected in one way or another!

I love the characters in Tracks. I feel like they were easily distinguishable and you could feel the emotion running through them, for example, Tina's desperation and pent-up frustration at the scenario presented to her.

This is the second book I have read by Karen Woods and I can now officially call myself a fan! Very much looking forward to her next release.

Thank you to NetGalley and HarperNorth for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review 📖

At the start found it quite difficult to get into, but by half way I really wanted to know how it was going to end. My issue is the characters, I can't remember the last time I read a book where I couldn't stand any if the characters. I'm not really a fan of the writing style, I don't know why it just doesn't gel right for me, but overall it did keep me interested throughout.

Wow what a good little book.. starts off with Donny and Susan in their lovely life that has had a couple of hiccups but they are living a good life. What a fantastic person Donny is coming from a rubbish upbringing to looking out for kids at Second Chance … and a great ending where not everything is as it seems. A great read x

An interesting story line, yet the book felt rushed. I feel there could have been lot more to it. Not quite as good as Karen's Earlier books, but still a good read.

Taking forever to get wherever it was going, and the change of POV from sentence to sentence was jarring and amateurish.
