As Knight investigates the relationships between the mob, drug traffickers, and government officials, O’Grady brazenly offers him a chance to succeed him, providing that Knight dismiss prosecutorial efforts against O’Grady’s friends. When Knight refuses, he becomes the target of multiple assassination attempts. As the plot accelerates to its conclusion, Knight forms an alliance with the FBI to bring down a massive conspiracy involving mobsters, New York drug traffickers, and O’Grady. Even hiding out on Cape Cod does not put him beyond the reach of the killers and both Knight and Christy must find ways to protect themselves from certain death.
