Menopause. Every woman walks through this hormonal lava pit of remorse and chicken wing cravings, yet few of us are offered a warning about the perils, let alone a survival guide. Following the success of The Girl in the Gold Bikini, author Dana Goldstein is throwing back the curtain on the most challenging years of a woman's life. Holding nothing back, the author brings her unique sense of humour to her menopausal journey, sharing stories of hair growing where it shouldn't, erotic dreams that leave her shaken for days and her struggle to stop herself from killing her beloved husband.
Murder on My Mind will make you laugh out loud while while making you feel better about the chaos of your own menopausal journey.
I love Dana Goldstein’s way of tackling these two important, and often not discussed stages in women’s life: perimenopause and menopause. She tackles the subject with humour and had me laughing out loud.
Most of the time, mothers prepare their young daughters with the “talk” about becoming a young woman. Our girlfriends fill in the blank with truths, untruths and misinformation. I just wish that my mother had also filled me in on perimenopause and menopause. However, she did not, and she also went through it blind, as most women do. Dana Goldstein’s “Murder on my Mind: A Memoir of Menopause” is a perfect guide on what to expect. I only wish that she had written it sooner so that I knew what was coming. My husband might have appreciated that too.
Women are the “strong” sex. Are we ever! I am planning to buy a copy for my daughter so that she knows what’s coming in about 15 years.
Even though this book is hilarious, I felt a little sad as I read this book to think of all the hard things women go through.. Her feelings of rage and fear and everything else are so real. A couple years ago someone told me about a doctor that does Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy. I took the bait and went to him and the BHRT has made all the difference. No more rage. No more fear. No more tears. It changed everything! I'm so sorry that more women don't know about this.
I saw many of my friends in her stories.
The book was well written. I'd read it again.
Just like some mother's hold parties for their daughters when they have their first period, this is a book women should give other women around age 40! Menopause is something that just doesn't get talked about enough.
This is so me. I thought I was the only one feeling and acting in ways I couldn’t explain. I thought I was so sick now I know it’s part of menopause. We need to talk about this more. Thank you Dana for bringing a strong light on such a secretive subject. I feel free. Funny, witty, and educational. You capture every scenario possible. I wish it was longer.
Having met Dana in real life and been a part of the mom groups and getaways that she speaks of in both her books, I get a feeling of nostalgia for my time in Calgary, AB. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to know her well before we moved away but I have really enjoyed getting to know more about her through her writings! She is a talented, fearless, and hilarious storyteller who tells it like it is through the good and the bad! Dana, thank you for making me feel “normal” as I unwittingly start my journey towards menopause myself.
This girl can write! This is the second book I have read of Dana's and, honestly, I just can't put them down once I start reading. Her style is so conversational and casual yet polished and strikingly intelligent. Much like menopause itself, Dana took me on an emotional roller coaster. I laughed out loud at times and was moved to tears at other times. Sometimes a bit too graphic, but always relatable. Highly recommend this book.
This book is a must read. It’s true to life and doesn’t hold back. Every page has you wanting more, I couldn’t put it down. It was almost like it was written about me and for me. It’s an honest look at menopause that made me laugh and cry at the same time. I highly recommend this book.
After reading Dana Goldstein's hilarious and heart wrenching book I now realize I am most likely already in perimenopause. Sadly for my poor husband I have shared some of Dana's experiences such as the realistic dreams of your spouse doing something and then being mad at him all day for something that he did in your dream....sorry dear!
Murder on my Mind is an honest look at what happens, that no one warns us about. Things happen slowly so it's not like a broken arm where you can go to the doctor and say "fix this". It is so different for every woman, and so very hard to articulate in a sane way to your GP. But Dana's words give us courage to ask those questions and look deeper into what is going on with our bodies and our minds during this sometimes lengthy battle to freedom from the period.
If you are getting towards the age of menopause then take some time with a nice cup of tea to sit and read Murder on my Mind, I'm certainly glad I did. Great book!
I would read this book again to reach the last chapter: an appreciation for what it is to be a woman post-menopause. I applaud Dana Goldstein for taking up a subject not always openly discussed. From hot flashes to sexuality, she covers it all with unabashed candour and humour. Her memoir elicits empathy for a woman’s midlife experience, and celebrates the victory of entering the second part of your life.
So much fun! And relatable; which makes it slightly comforting to know it’s not just me that thinks about murder when her husband sighs or changes the channel too often (just kidding - maybe). This is the 2nd book of Dana’s I’ve read, back to back with The Girl in the Gold Bikini and I’m moving onto her third, Spent. Dana writes in an accessible, relatable, funny way, and I’m enjoying the ride immensely.
A humorous and honest account of the author’s experience through perimenopause and menopause.
I really appreciate Dana’s candor and vulnerability around a topic that while impacting half the world’s population, is largely overlooked and under-acknowledged.
Books like this are a gift as they remind us that we’re not alone in our experience and that better is ahead.
