The Throwaways #12

Finding Broken Arrow

Rate this book
With two retired spies, a houseful of kids, and a rambunctious dog, what could possibly go wrong?

Robin knows how to take care of herself and likes it that way. When her benefactor sends hired muscle to figure out who's been vandalizing the boys' ranch she oversees, the help is neither wanted nor appreciated. The fact that she accidentally hits on her new employee—after mowing him down with her cart in the grocery store—doesn't help matters any.

Still nursing a broken heart, Vance is just looking for a fresh start with the insta-family he got when he adopted his younger brother and sisters. He hadn’t bargained for falling head-over-heels for the spunky owner of the Remuda Ranch.

When Robin’s life is threatened, it unearths dark memories for Vance must be overcome for his heart to ever be open to love again.

Finding Broken Arrow is the final installment in the surprisingly warm and funny series The Throwaways, twelve novels that don’t shy away from the dark corners of this world but always shine the light of hope. At the core of the series is a group of strong but often unlikely heroes and heroines coming from all walks of life whose lives intertwine as they fight for justice, for love, and to leave their indelible mark on this world.

Immerse yourself in a world of friends, laughter, and love with The Throwaways.

I really liked this book, it wasn't what I expecting but it was good nonetheless.
Robin was a very good character, she new what she wanted, wasn't afraid of being heard and was just a good person in general. Vance, OMG, that man, so sweet, doing everything he could for his siblings and the ranch, without a second though for himself, I was just wanted to hit him upside the head for taking so long to be with Robin, but at the same, I think they got together at the right time.
I recomend this book if you like single guardians, horses and a friendship before a relationship, that's the most important thing sometimes.

Vance and Robin are a complete story, backstory included, but even though this is a standalone, as the 12th in a series, there were a lot of characters that I think we probably explained more in previous books. As book boyfriends go, Vance is pretty stellar, the former bad guy turned good guy is now the guardian of his half-siblings. He's sent to be a bodyguard at a boy's ranch, run by Robin. She's headstrong and independent, but there's instant chemistry between the two. HEA and a bonus romance between his best friend Jeff and her best friend.

Her books never disappoint me! Loved this one. Flew through it on a plane and before I knew it we were landing. It is always fun to re-meet old characters. Love.

Finding Broken Arrow is a quick, entertaining story about two people with big responsibilities, who are trying to keep those responsibilities from getting in the way of the a big love.

Robin is in charge of a ranch where dozens of teen boys, who would normally be placed in a foster home, live, work, go to school, and work with the horses on the ranch. Vance has recently left the military and has custody of his four younger half-siblings. Robin and Vance meet in the feminine hygiene aisle of the grocery store (talk about awkward!). It was a total mute-cute moment!

When Robin discovers that Vance is the new “gorilla” her boss has hired for the ranch, she has conflicting thoughts. She’s not happy that he’s there, but Vance is attractive and charming, and doesn’t complain when she makes him muck out stalls in the horse barn on his first day (instead of dealing with the security issues he was hired to manage). The relationship develops quickly, but when Vance decides the needs of his younger siblings need to take priority over his social life, he apologizes to Robin and ends their romantic relationship. They spend the next five months working together, doing their best to deny how they truly feel.

The characters in this book are so likable, and the dialog laugh-out-loud funny. There’s no angst, just mature people dealing with the responsibilities they have in mature ways. It’s hard not to root for a couple who is so unselfish with their lives - Robin’s whole life revolves around the boys ranch, and Vance gives up his freedom to care for four children he hardly knows. You can’t help but hope they figure out how to make things work!

I did take issue with a couple small things about this book. It wasn’t too far into the story when you become aware that these characters have lived in another of the author’s books (or perhaps more than one). Which isn’t necessarily a problem. But I didn’t feel like I was given enough back story to not feel like I was missing out on some pertinent information. Also, maybe it’s just me, but I like to be told - or given some significant clues - how old the characters are in a story. I have no idea how old either Robin or Vance are, and the oldest of sisters his is 16ish, but I have no idea what the ages are of the other siblings. That type of information just gives me some context for the characters and helps me feel a connection. Otherwise, they’re just people on a page…

Although I enjoyed this book quite a bit, I’m afraid this author’s other books will suffer the same fate with me that several others have recently...I just have too many other things to read to abandon my list for additional Heather Huffman stories. But if I ever get through the list, Heather Huffman books will definitely be on my list!

3.5 STARS

I've read just about all of Heather Huffman's books, and I love the intersectionality of them. It's nice to see the characters pop up in other books, so the reader gets a glimpse of "where are they now?".

Vance has come a long way since Throwaway, it was nice to see him get his happy ending. Taking charge of his four siblings (including a hormone addled teenage girl) certainly kept him on his toes, and he and Robin were a perfect match. The romance was fast, but not unbelievable.

The only thing that didn't really engage me was the setting. All the stuff about horses/rodeo isn't really my cup of tea, fortunately the characters made up for that.

I have been waiting for Vance' s story for a long time. I was not disappointed!! Vance first showed up in Throwaway as a bad/good guy!! He is a complex guy. But what a guy he is!!!

This is a love story...a story of family, friends, hope, trust. Robin is perfect for Vance. It was fun to watch them grow and learn about each other.

I love Heather Huffman stories. I can't wait to read the next!

Beyond expectations

I loved Vance's story it is way beyond what I expected. The fact that Robin is the woman he loves makes my heart smile. I loved seeing old friends and catching up with them. An absolute must read.

When you are done with this one, get the rest of Heather Huffman's books and read them. They are all wonderful.

Awesome

Awesome doesn't begin to define this book. Love, on all it's levels...the sweetness, the sacrifice, the willingness to be selfless and the indefinable joy found there are all found in these pages by Heather Huffman. Job magically and magnificently done.

Great romance

This story was such fun to read. I loved the various characters, how they met, life on the ranch, the various kids, their stories, training the horses, and especially the romance between Vance and Robin.
