Mindful Mr. Sloth

Rate this book
Sasha has one speed--fast. She loves to do lots of things, all at once, as fast as possible. Mr. Sloth has one speed--slow. He loves to do things one at a time, at a nice, easy pace. Can Mr. Sloth's mindful ways teach Sasha to slow down and enjoy life? Best-selling author Katy Hudson gently weaves a mindfulness theme into this unlikely friendship tale between an energetic girl and a sloth, encouraging children to stop, breathe, and be present in every moment.

There is no alternative than to give this full marks, and more.

The layout is so clear, the font is just easy to read, the graphics are pure colourful delight.
And it was absolutely great to have this little girl who anyone and everyone can relate to. Loved it!

All kids can be inpatient when young. Hurry, hurry, rush rush rush.
This little one was no different, everything she did or undertook was with speed.

Then she comes upon a new friend Mr Sloth.
Mr Sloth of course is a sloth and slow and steady.

When she enters into race it’s right up her street.
But having Mr Sloth changes all that.

There are two paces in life. Fast and SLOTH!

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Mindful Mr Sloth is an adorable children's picture book focused on mindfulness and teaching children they get more from slowing down in life and enjoying the present moment than from doing everything too fast and missing out on so much around us.
This book is absolutely adorable and I loved the whole concept of the story. This book is a fun yet important read and teaches a lesson one all children should learn - mindfulness.

This is a children's book that I read to my twin boys. I think the pictures are very cute, but the storyline was a little bit jumpy for me. I do not think my boys where totally pulled into this book. I receive an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

Sasha Patience Pruitt lives her life on fast forward and her middle name is a bit of a misnomer. Her new friend, Mr. Sloth, is, well, a sloth and let’s face it, algae doesn’t typically grow on your fur if you’re quick enough to outrun it.

This friendship of opposites has the potential to either be the best thing ever or a super fast/super slow disaster in the making.

Katy Hudson is one of my all time favourite illustrators. She’s the picture equivalent for me of that one author you’re certain could transform a shopping list into a literary masterpiece. I’m sure I’d be captivated if Katy drew a stickman.

Which made it disconcerting when I didn’t immediately fall in love with Sasha. I’ve adored every character I’ve met in Katy’s previous books and I loved Mr. Sloth at first sight. I read and reread this book until I finally figured out what the problem was. Me.

It turns out I have a bias where picture books are concerned. I can tolerate, and even find cute, all types of bad and/or potentially annoying behaviour from animal characters but apparently I judge humans differently. Not that Sasha was going around chucking tantrums or anything but her impatience frustrated me time and time again. I thought back to when I read Sloth and Squirrel in a Pickle, where Squirrel is the speedy equivalent of Sasha, and not once was I frustrated by Squirrel.

Having done a deep dive into my soul, I reread this book once again, with a new understanding of myself as a reader. This time Sasha was simply a young girl with a lot of energy, someone who doesn’t realise she’s missing out on a variety of amazing things because they’re a blur to her. Once she slows down enough and pays attention, she discovers the beauty that surrounds her and learns that some things are best enjoyed at a different speed.

Once again, the illustrations in this book were absolutely gorgeous. Bonus points for the cameos of the author’s previous books.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Capstone Editions, an imprint of Capstone, for the opportunity to read this picture book. I’m rounding up from 4.5 stars.

This adorable picture book is about young Sasha and her new, unlikely friend, Mr. Sloth. Sasha is always rushing to do multiple things at once, get things finished as quickly as possible, and moving on to the next task. Mr. Sloth is quite the opposite. How will these two learn from one another to find the balance between moving and lightning speed and moving at sloth speed?

The illustrations were wonderfully done and I also enjoyed the little additional tidbit about mindfulness in the back of the book.

Look at the cover! Isn't it super-duper scrumptious? Fortunately, the book does complete justice to the cover page and matches it in cuteness.

The story tells us of a little girl named Sasha Patience whose middle name doesn't indicate her hyperactivity. She loves to begin multiple things at once without necessarily completing anything. But the day Mr. Sloth waddles into her life, it turns upside down.

The story is absolutely well-written. But more than the plot itself, I loved the book for its non-judgemental tone. It accepts that being fast and being slow both are needed at times. Thus no child in either category is pressured to join the other side.

The illustrations are melt-your-heart adorable! A worthy book for all early readers as it teaches them (and their parents) the valuable lesson of focussing on the present. As W.H. Davies said in his poem 'Leisure',
WHAT is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare?

Thank you, NetGalley and Capstone Editions, for the Advanced Review Copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Sloths are so great. Like, wholesomely great. I freaking adore sloths.

So of course I loved this book with a cute little sloth on every page! But Sasha is such a little scene stealer too! Honestly, I aww'd so much at this. A story of speedy little girl and the slooooooooooow sloth that she finds, and the adventures they take together. Mr Sloth wants her to take it slooooooooooooow and Sasha wanted to go, go, go and eventually a comprise is reached.

CUE ADORABLENESS.

This was a cute children's book about friendship and patience. I loved the illustrations and how the story teaches children great strategies for when they have to wait or can't get what they want right away. The author is one of my favs and this newest story didn't disappoint. Much thanks to NetGalley and Capstone for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!

“Mindful Mr. Sloth” by Katy Hudson is a beautifully illustrated story focusing on a young girl who is always so busy that she forgets to slow down and enjoy the small things in life. She meets Mr. Sloth, who teaches her the importance of relaxing and taking things easy. They even quite literally stop and smell the flowers together, which was rather cute.

I loved the simplicity in the message and the story. The illustrations are adorable and charming, and fit the story really well. I appreciated the basic explanation of mindfulness that the author included at the end of the story. I just wish they had considered including more activities for the reader to try out, and a note for parents/caregivers as well.

Overall, I loved this book and I highly recommend it for all children, especially those who lead very fast and active lives and need to be reminded occasionally to slow down and take it easy.

This book is a gem! What a beautiful, beautiful book! This book feels like a warm hug. This is the story of a little girl who is full of life but very impatient. Then she meets a sloth who teaches her to slow down and relax and enjoy life. This was such a great metaphor for today's world where everyone is racing towards their goal, not having time to slow down. But we need to slow down sometimes. It's necessary.

Seriously this was such a beautiful book with a great mesage and adorable illustrations! The sloth and the little girl were so adorable together. I loved this book with my all heart!

Sasha, the girl in this storybook, reminds me of a girl I know so well.

She wants to do everything and anything at once, just cannot sit still, read everything and explore as much as she can at a go. But yes, this story tells about being mindful and to be present at the moment. And I do feel this is quite an important message to adults and kids alike.

We feel too much. We want too much. We want to be everywhere. We want to know everything.

But does any of it do anything good for us?

Well, it's time to answer this while reading this book.

I love, love, love the artwork.

Thank you, author/artist and the publisher, for the advance reading copy.

A huge thanks to Capstone for my e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book tells the story of Sasha Patience Pruitt who is an impatient girl that loves to do all things at once. One morning she encounters Mr Sloth who has just had a fall. Instead of listening to his story because she likes things done fastly because she is not patient doesn’t listen but scoots him up so they can play. They end up at a neighbour hood race where Mr Sloth teaches her some lessons. We all could learn a thing or two from Mr Sloth and this book makes a perfect read for bedtime. Highly recommend it.

Sasha is a little girl who does everything fast. Not only that, but she has so many things on the go at one time, that she doesn't always finish things that she starts. Now this is often the case with children, but Sasha takes it to extreme. I'm sure we all know someone like Sasha, but how do we get them to slow down and smell the roses. In this story, Sasha meets a sloth, one that just happens to live in the tree where she has her treehouse. She wants to be best friends and before he realizes what is happening, she has dragged him off to her house and tried to engage him in all her many activities. Well, he does not do anything fast enough for Sasha and he finally has enough. He yells at Sasha to stop and after several times, she finally realizes that she is missing a lot. She agrees that sometimes going fast is okay, but it is also important to slow down and enjoy things. I really liked that it took a few tries to get her to realize what she was missing. The ending of this book where they are reading together and Sasha realizes that she gets to look at the pictures touched me, being a book lover. At the end of the book there are points about mindfulness that are short and concise. We went over them together when I read this book to my granddaughter. She doesn't really understand the concept of Mindfulness, but the points about focusing, relaxing, breathe, and use your senses were great. Another well illustrated book with bright and vibrant pictures showing a lot of emotion and action to add greatly to the story. I recommend this story to families and classrooms. This would be a great addition to a group of children who are working on slowing down and becoming mindful. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.

Arc kindly received from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a children’s picture book that looks at gender identity from the eyes of a sibling. I feel like this is very important, and is not a viewpoint I had thought much about before. I feel like a very difficult subject was handled honestly and sensitively, and I hope this helps both families going through a similar experience, but also to open up conversations in other families.

If I am 100% honest, I wasn’t a huge fan of the font or illustrations. However the content of this book far outweighs any stylistic choices.

Maybe you know a kiddo that knows one speed. Fast and more fast. Always wanting to get the next thing done to do the next thing. Sasha learns a valuable lesson from Mr. Sloth, slow and steady does not always mean win the race but it does mean you can enjoy life. That includes people, places, and all the good things we see.

This beautiful illustrated picture book will bring a smile to all that read it. Sasha and Mr. Sloth make a great pair. On a side note, don't hate Sloth because he is Mr. Don't do him in like they did to Mr. Potato Head. Just don't.

A special thank you to Capstone and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley and Capstone for the opportunity read and review this delightful children's book.

I am definitely purchasing this book in August, 2021! I have grandnieces who will absolutely love this book. The charming tale describes Sasha, a little girl who does everything in a hurry. One day she meets a sloth who obviously does everything slowly. They become fast friends and the sloth shows Sasha that mindfulness and focus can really add to life. The illustrations are delightful. I highly recommend Katy Hudson's book!

Details on first page, so amazing and cheeky. Made me smile even before I started the story. It is one of my favourite things when illustrations capture the essence of the story and enhances it visually. Katy Hudson is a very talented writer and illustrator, you feel her passion in every word and in every illustration.

A Loud Winter’s Nap is usually the last book we read before winter break to inspire children to remain active. I am so excited that Mindful Mr. Sloth is coming out in August. I AM Sasha, I always seem to have a thousand things on the go. Most of our children usually run on Sasha’s speed – fast!
This book did a wonderful job inviting children to take a moment and use their senses to connect with what they are doing at the moment. It gives great ideas about how to approach mindfulness with children and it highlights that mindfulness is a very important skill and essential for mental health. This is the perfect book for children and for adults, like myself, who need reminders that it’s okay to slow down and practice self-care.

Looking forward to sharing this with our children in September! (No classes in August!)

Thank you, Katy Hudson, Capstone and NetGalley for the privilege of reading Mindful and providing my honest review of Mr. Sloth in advance of its release.

Sasha Patience and Mr. Sloth are total opposites, and this story shows us the way opposites influence each other. Sasha has no time to stop. She starts doing two things at once and gets bored with things quickly. Mr. Sloth, of course, takes his time with everything and never loses his cool.

Mr. Sloth is the perfect example of how patience shows results. The message behind the book is not only to be patient, but also to slow down and enjoy the world. And how it's okay to sometimes go fast and sometimes go slow.

My mom always tells me stories about me being impatient as a child. I had to have it all and right now, and I wouldn't take no for an answer, which is one of the reasons I loved this story so much.

I don't want to forget to emphasise how warm, rich and comforting the illustrations were in this one!

A fun and well-crafted book, where a young hyperactive girl befriends a lazy, slow-talking (and then some!) sloth, and learns to just chill, take it easy, and find out what the whole world can bring when it's allowed to not become just a blur. I took that to be different enough from the mindfulness lesson tacked on at the end for this to be a success (I don't do mindfulness, y'know). Certainly the fine visual qualities are going to sell the story, and the moral, whichever you ultimately decide is on offer. A strong four stars.

Fun and beautifully illustrated story reminds me of an old Simon/Garfunkle song (Slow down you move to fast...). The story reminds the reader that fun has two speeds--fast and slow (like two of my grands) using the example of Sasha who appears as an overachiever/multitasker. Of note is that the race includes bikes, a go-kart, a scooter, walking, a skateboard, and a wheelchair (YAY!). Love it!
I requested and received a free temporary ebook from Capstone Publishing via NetGalley. Thanks!

Without a doubt, this is my favourite young audience book that I’ve read so far this year. Not only because of its mindfulness message but because I think most of us, adults especially, can identify with the rush of modern life. The illustrations and characters are wonderful. I enjoyed reading all the little notes by Sasha in the illustrations, there’s so much detail I hope this book’s readers really do slow down and enjoy the ride! 5/5 stars from me. I would open this one again and again.

Mindful Mr Sloth is a beautiful picture book with detailed and fun-to-explore illustrations. (For example, I found another book I’ve read by author Katy Hudson, The Golden Acorn, in an illustration toward the end of this book. Fun!)

Mr Sloth’s advice to Sasha to be mindful, focus, stop and relax, think, and use your senses is just as important for adults to take time to practice as it is for kids. I’ll definitely recommend this book.

Thank you NetGalley and Capstone Editions for a copy of "Mindful Mr. Sloth" in exchange for my honest review.

This book is absolutely delightful. Mr. Sloth is an adorable character. The book was written for ages 4 to 8 but I think it would make a wonderful read-a-loud for younger children because of the colourful pictures and Mr. Sloth is sure to be a popular character.

Sasha only has one speed - fast and she spends a few seconds at every activity she does. Words like: "raced, trampled, frantic and whipped" are used to describe how Sasha does her activities. Mr. Sloth loves to do things at a nice and easy pace. Mr. Sloth sets out to teach Sasha to slow down and enjoy life.

When Mr. Sloth and Sasha meet, he tries to explain to her that he has fallen from his branch during his morning nap but Sasha is too impatient to listen to him. When they play doctor, Mr. Sloth takes too long to find a heart beat. When they build a rocket, he takes too long with the sticky tape. When they paint Sasha does four paintings while Mr. Sloth puts on his apron.

Sasha feels that she is the fastest in the neighbourhood. They take off on a race. Mr. Sloth wants to stop and listen to birds sing, Sasha says that the chirping is nice but she needs to win a race. Mr. Sloth wants to stop to smell flowers, Sasha admits that they smell nice and starts to wonder why she never has noticed before. Mr. Sloth wants to show Sash the stillness, the breeze and a butterfly.

They learn that they are the very best friends even if they have two speeds - fast and slow. At bedtime Mr. Sloth takes so long to read the words that Sasha learns to appreciate and enjoy the pictures in the book.

This book teaches Mindfulness: being present in the moment; Focus: on where you are, what you are doing; Stop; Relax; Think: about your breathing; Use Your Senses: to notice the world around you.

An unlikely friendship between a energetic girl named, Sasha and a Sloth makes this charming book come to life! Sasha is instantly intrigued when she meets a Sloth and forces him to play by her rules...at a very fast pace!

"Stoooooooooop", howls the Sloth. Sasha impatiently asks the Sloth what he wants and he asks her many things such as "can you hear the birds?, can you smell the flowers?". For once, Sasha stops to look around. She begins to see the world through the Sloth's eyes and gain an appreciation for nature's wonders. Their friendship becomes stronger as they begin to participate in a variety of activities; both fast and slow.

Not only would I love to read this book aloud and have fun changing up the fast paced dialogue and slow speech which children will enjoy but I can't wait to share the life lessons within this story too. The importance of slowing down to not miss what is right in front of us, using our senses to appreciate nature's beauty and valuing a balanced friendship where everyone is heard.

Mindful Mr. Sloth is written by Katy Hudson and published by Capstone publishing. Thank you to Capstone and NetGalley for sharing this wonderful read with me!

Sasha is a child who is always “in a hurry”. For her, the pace of life is always accelerated. On a certain day, she meets Mr. Sloth, a sloth that prefers to enjoy things a little more calmly, so that he can enjoy every moment and everything around him.
At first, Sasha tries to make his new friend adapt to her own time, but during a race, Mr. Sloth manages to make Sasha stop for a moment and simply breathe, enjoying the world around her better. With that, Sasha starts to notice details that she hadn’t noticed before, like, for example, the smell of flowers, because she was always in too much of a hurry in the day-to-day. After that, Sasha understood that life doesn’t have to be lived at a single speed. There are times when going slow and steadily is much more helpful than putting your foot on the gas.

“Mindful Mr. Sloth” is an extremely cute, well-designed book (starting with the BEAUTIFUL illustrations!), and which, despite being a book written for children, has a very important message for adults: sometimes, we need to stop and just enjoy, because the path is as important as the finish line.
This story left me with a warm heart and I will definitely read it to my little cousins (who, by the way, are very similar to Sasha).
