The Charismatic Movement came and went. Rick Dewhurst experienced most of it, dating back to 1980. From John Wimber’s Vineyard Church in Anaheim, to the Kansas City prophets, to Rick Joyner’s MorningStar Ministries, to the Toronto Blessing, he was there to see it all. This is his memoir, focusing on the spiritual highlights of his 40-year journey.
Rick Dewhurst tried his hand at a variety of jobs, including home improvements salesman, bartender, fish-boat deckhand, and taxi driver, before earning his B.A. in English literature from the University of Victoria, with training in journalism. He then worked as a newspaper sports editor before answering the call to start City Gate Church, where he has served as pastor since 1995. His first novel, Bye Bye Bertie, introduced readers to the lovable and offbeat P.I. Joe LaFlam. Rick lives in Duncan, British Columbia, with his wife Jane. They have three adult children.
This book was not quite what I was expecting by the title. There are a few anecdotes here and there regarding some charismatic/supernatural experiences, but they are scattered between the much longer sections of personal reflections on the Christian life. There is not much cohesiveness to the book, either. At times, it feels as though the author simply slapped together a collection of his diary and blog entries and labelled it a memoir.
Great memories of my years at Yineyard Church about 25 years ago. The Spirit was moving and we could literally feel His presence! I loved the explanation about "the peace that passes all understanding". I feel I still I live in that even with the turmoil in the world!
I love reading the wonderful testimonies of others as they walk the path God has for them. I have been encouraged to continue to share with others the Good News of the Gospel even though I am in my early 70s. I should not retire from this work given me by the Holy Spirit.
