Ted Darling #16

The End of the Line

Rate this book
Holidays are never guaranteed for Detective Chief Inspector Ted Darling. Crime has a way of intervening.
He’s hoping for a relaxing time in Wales with his partner Trevor, who’s had a difficult week. Instead he finds himself confronted by a sudden death, possibly suspicious, which threatens to leave his mother, Annie, homeless.

Ted’s determined to find out what really went on. But he’s short of time and doesn’t have the backing of his own team.
Little does he know that they're battling a difficult case without him. And that when he returns, he'll find himself thrust back into his old role as Senior Investigating Officer in the brutal murder of a young boy.
But who is the mole on the expanded team investigating both the death and the drugs gang thought to be behind it? And can Ted outwit them to finally bring the Big Man to justice?

The End of the Line continues investigations begun in The Cuckoo is a Pretty Bird, so is best read after that.

The story continues in three further books, 'Is That Billinge Lump?' 'Mother, Was It Worth It?' 'Biff the Useless Mention', and 'Angling Bumateurs'. There's an additional standalone prequel to the series, Trot On!, about her time running a holiday riding centre in Wales, before her move to France.

Lesley is also the not-so-secret writer behind the pen-name of Carl Granger. The book Looking for Lulu is darker crime fiction.

Lesley is a former journalist, working as both a criminal court and coroner's court reporter. She also worked as a case tracker for the Crown Prosecution Service, and for a firm investigating irregularities in offshore finance. Her other jobs have included owning and running a holiday riding centre and acting as a 'charity mugger', lying in wait to sign up shoppers for a wildlife charity.

Lesley's interests centre around nature and wildlife and encompass dogs, wild camping and organic gardening. She lives in the Auvergne region of Central France and holds dual French/British nationality. Her current dogs are two rescued border collies

Solid procedural investigating with Ted Darling and crew re: a tragic killing of a youth drug runner - linked to investigations and suspects from The Cuckoo is a Pretty Bird so readers should be forewarned. There's an early 'minor' case involving Ted's mother and a suspected killing with a suspcious change of a will, but this fades into background quite quickly (sidelined alongside poor Trevor and the cats I'm afraid). 3.5 stars overall.

In my opinion this is one of the best detective series I have read. What I particularly enjoy is catching up with characters that are likeable and, more importantly, believable. As ever the plot is fast paced and the tension mounts with each chapter. It's a genuine page turner with marvellous taut writing. L.M Krier never shies away from difficult issues and while this one ties up loose ends from the previous 'cuckoo' case, there is also the issue of police corruption underlying it. Another plot strand is the scam that has been perpetrated on Aldwyth, the friend of Ted's mum. He is suspicious about the circumstances surrounding Aldwyth's death.
It all makes for another terrific Ted Darling book. Billirant, I'm already looking forward to book 17.

Ted Darling is back with his team and his husband Trev is supporting him as usual. I love the Ted and Trev series of books, it’s like sitting down with characters you’ve come to know so well. The author has depicted characters you can visualise in your minds eye, who you can hear speak, the character development is so well accomplished. The story picks up and progresses from the previous book in the series Dirty Old Town, but it can be read as a stand alone. Ted and Trev have gone to Wales on a short break to visit his mum Annie but as if so often the case Ted happens upon a possible crime involving his mum’s late friend and companion Aldwyth At the same time, and unbeknownst to Ted, a serious crime has been committed on his home ground of Stockport, a young lad has been killed and it’s all bound up with the drugs scene and some particularly nasty, unscrupulous drug dealers. When Ted gets back home he immediately becomes involved in this heinous crime. This is an extremely powerful story of drugs, the lengths those who sell them go to and also police corruption at the heart of the investigation. The book completely drags you in and keeps you hooked until the very end. I don’t want to give any more of the plot away, suffice to say if you haven’t read the series then do so you won’t know what you missed until you do.

This is another excellent read from the pen of L.M Krier. I really liked the change of scene to Wales in the first part of the book. It was good to have something so different to start with. Familiar characters return and the brilliant 'sparky' Jezza comes to the fore.......she’s a fantastic character. As usual there are plenty of twists and turns and at one point you suspect almost everyone ! For me the really nice thing about this particular book is that all the loose ends which had been left to ‘simmer ‘ from previous books all came together. Very satisfying !
The last three chapters are particularly good with great suspense and so many twists and turns.
Overall........Absolutely loved it! If you are a new reader to the series start at the beginning....you will not be disappointed!!

An absolute page turner!

If you have not discovered Ted yet, you are seriously missing out on a blinding good read. I would recommend starting from the beginning of the series as you may be a little lost with the back story in The End of the Line. This book ties up and closes some of the previous books themes and definitely was a page turner from start to finish. I couldn't out the book down and forfeited sleep and meal breaks just so I could continue to read and discover the outcome. No spoilers from me except for this is one you do not want to miss!!

Cracking read again!

I love this series dearly, it’s like sitting down with old friends and catching up. This one sets a cracking pace and I got right into the story straight away, it’s well written and has some tasty turns. I love the blend of professional and personal lives for the main characters and if you love a good police procedural, it’s all here. Couldn’t recommend a better series.

Another brilliant effort from one of my favorite British detective story authors. Loved the budding love affair beginning with the Corgi. Lovely to find Ted dropping his fears with at least one breed of dog. Also appreciated the tying up of lose ends/mysteries from prior books. Looking forward to the next one. Absolutely billirant!!

Another great page-turner featuring Ted Darling and his colleagues in Stockport. LM Krier has created many distinctive and enjoyable characters, and keeps the story moving. A secondary plot involving Ted’s mother, Annie, is interesting without being distracting. If you enjoy police procedurals and like some British slang, you can’t do better than LM Krier and the Ted Darling series!

Book 16 in the Ted Darling series did not disappoint. As usual, I just couldn’t put it down, just as well I had Ted to keep me company during the developing cyclone on holidays.

Lots of twists and turns along the way and I knew you could find a way to get Ted to like a dog. .

I always feel like I have been reacquainted with good friends over a coffee catchup.

Thank you.

Fantastic book. Ms. Krier is one of my favorite authors, I have been enjoying her Ted Darling series for 16 book so far and I hope they continue for a long while. The End of the Line continues the story from Book 15 and gives the readers the ending that was missing from it. I recommend anyone to read her books--I am now waiting for the next one.

Another eagerly anticipated instalment in the career of DCI Ted Darling, which I read in and as I have come to expect, I have thoroughly enjoyed it. As usual Ted can’t get away from crime even when he is on holiday but this one is personal. Being away from home, he has to leave it to the local force to deal with but there is plenty brewing for him to get his teeth into back in Stockport. Whilst Ted and his team are dealing with an increasingly difficult and dangerous situation his home life remains calm and settled with his extremely patient and accommodating partner. It is a welcome change for a fictional police officer to have a stable home life. His partner has well grounded fears for his safety however and Ted gives him more cause to be anxious than he is aware of. Actually Ted gives everyone cause to worry because being more aware of his speed and abilities than anyone else, he takes risks they see as unnecessary. Everything about this book hangs together well even though there are strands to take into the next one. I’m now looking forward to that next book as soon as the author can manage it!
