Kathryn Shay

Kathryn Shay is a lifelong writer. At fifteen, she penned her first 'romance,' a short story about a female newspaper reporter in New York City and her fight to make a name for herself in a world of male journalists - and with one hardheaded editor in particular. Looking back, Kathryn says she should have known then that writing was in her future. But as so often happens, fate sent her detouring down another path.

Fully intending to pursue her dream of big city lights and success in the literary world, Kathryn took every creative writing class available at the small private women's college she attended in upstate New York. Instead, other dreams took precedence. She met and subsequently married a wonderful guy who'd attended a neighboring school, then completed her practice teaching, a requirement for the education degree she never intended to use. But says Kathryn, "I fell in love with teaching the first day I was up in front of a class, and knew I was meant to do that."

Kathryn went on to build a successful career in the New York state school system, thoroughly enjoying her work with adolescents. But by the early 1990s, she'd again made room in her life for writing. It was then that she submitted her first manuscript to publishers and agents. Despite enduring two years of rejections, she persevered. And on a snowy December afternoon in 1994, Kathryn Shay sold her first book to Harlequin Superromance.

Since that first sale, Kathryn has written twenty-one books for Harlequin, nine mainstream contemporary romances for the Berkley Publishing Group, and two online novellas, which Berkley then published in traditional print format.

Kathryn has become known for her powerful characterizations - readers say they feel they know the people in her books - and her heart-wrenching, emotional writing (her favorite comments are that fans cried while reading her books or stayed up late to finish them). In testament to her skill, the author has won five RT BookClub Magazine Reviewers Choice Awards, three Holt Medallions, two Desert Quill Awards, the Golden Leaf Award, and several online accolades.

Even in light of her writing success, that initial love of teaching never wavered for Kathryn. She finished out her teaching career in 2004, retiring from the same school where her career began. These days, she lives in upstate New York with her husband and two children. "My life is very full," she reports, "but very happy. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to pursue and achieve my dreams."

Not a bad story...first read by Kathryn Shay...just too many characters...presumably from other books by her.... for the story to flow well for me.
Liked the firefighting aspect...also the abuse was portrayed well.
Not bad ..quickie read.

4 Star reviews of More Than Enough (Sisters of Fire #1) by Kathryn Shay

I was excited when I learnt that Kathryn Shay had a new series releasing, particularly since it is a series based on strong women and I couldn’t wait to dive in to More Than Enough.
The writing was strong, with characters that were easy to relate to and a story line that you cannot help but become invested in.
This is firefighter Trish “Mac” Mackenzie and kindergarten teacher Nathan Mitchell’s story and I was hooked from the first chapter. This is an emotional story that brought me to tears on occasion; having been verbally abused as a child and then by her boyfriend, Mac has no self confidence.
When Mac and Nathan meet he feels a connection, but since she already has a boyfriend he knows it cannot go further. However once Mac gets away from her abusive boyfriend, Nathan is there to offer support in any way he can.
I really loved Nathan, he is so swoon worthy, loyal and supportive and I fell hard and fast for him. The chemistry and connection between them is obvious but Mac needs time to heal emotionally and build up her self confidence.
Ms. Shay handled this subject matter with dignity and respect, she isn’t afraid to write about characters that are flawed, human if you will and who are not afraid to seek therapy and help when it all becomes too much.
I am excited to see what Ms. Shay has in store for the rest of the series.

I didn’t connect with any character.

Also, it’s supposedly the first book in the series and the other books will be about the main female lead friends circle. However, the author revealed everything about the circle. Their husbands, kids, life, and everything. What will be the fun in the books related to them if we know everything now?

What a great start to the new Sisters of Fire Series. This is a series about six female firefighters and in More Than Enough we get to meet Trish “Mac” Mackenzie a female firefighter and Nathan who is a kind hearted kindergarten teacher.
Mac may be good at her job but she hasn’t had an easy life she grew up in an abusive family, she has also chosen an abusive boyfriend and has very little self esteem so will a meeting with a kindergarten teacher change her life for the better.
Nathan loves his job and loves being single but he can’t deny the attraction he has for Mac, he suspects she is being abused by her cop boyfriend but he refuses to intervene until a violent episode injures Mac and he steps in to help.
This is a story that may have triggers for some readers but it’s well written and it has characters you can’t help falling for. This book reminds us that domestic abuse can happen in homes we least expect, it can happen to people we see as strong and this story touched my heart. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

Kathryn Shay’s new series, “Sisters of Fire” is about a group of six women firefighters. Ten years ago they all trained together and became friends. Although they do not all work in the same firehouse, over the years, they have remained very close. This series hearkens back to the firefighter books this author wrote years ago. In fact, some of the characters from those books appear in this story.

This book is Trish “Mac” Mackenzie’s story. Mac was abused when she was a child, and finds it difficult to relate to people. However, Mac is a brave firefighter who thinks nothing of entering a burning building to rescue trapped people and/or animals... In spite of that, Mac refuses to admit that her long-term relationship with Rick has become abusive. She keeps her life a secret. However, several of her friends have become suspicious.

The hero of this story, Nathan, is a kindergarten teacher and an excellent example of a “Beta” hero. He is kind, gentle and caring. He is impressed with Mac’s expertise in her job and does anything he can to encourage her. He also respects her as a woman. In fact, he claims that she can be “Mac” at work, but she is “Trish” in her private life.

There is an interesting twist to this story. Nathan’s sister is one of the” Sisters of Fire” and one of Mac’s best friends. She is married to Mac’s brother, Clay, who is Mac’s brother. He is a policeman and is the person who introduced Mac to her current boyfriend.

This book is not like Ms. Shay’s more recent books. It is much longer and has a more complex plot. The author created characters that are more realistic with great depth. It also has a villain that Ms. Shay calls “evil” in her “Author Notes” at the end.

I greatly enjoyed reading this book. I love the closeness between all of the women firefighters. They may not be blood-relatives, but they are definitely ”sisters” in every other way.

Firefighter Trish “Mac” Mackenzie is in an unhealthy relationship with Rick Franklin, a cop. He is an abuser, and Mac knows it, but hasn’t done anything about it yet. Her self-esteem is spiraling downhill, and even though she’s got a great group of friends, she’s afraid to be vulnerable and real with them and tell them what’s going on. Some of them suspect, but until Mac is ready to do something about it, their hands are tied. Her group of friends is named the ‘Sisters of Fire,’ as they all work in the firefighting profession. Mac has confidence when she’s doing her job, but she lacks that confidence in relationships. Nathan Mitchell is a kindergarten teacher, and his sister is married to Mac’s brother. Mac and Nathan have seen each other around at various family events, but have never really gotten to know each other.

This book is the first in a promising new series by Kathryn Shay. Because it’s the first, there are a lot of background characters who are introduced within the scope of this book. As a result, the beginning of this book seems crowded with characters to track. However, once all the characters are introduced, the story takes off. It’s really tough watching a protagonist that you care about get abused. The beautiful part happens when her friends step in to help her out. She finds help in unexpected places, and gets the support she needs to break away from her abuser. There’s a lot of hope and beauty in this book. It moves at a steady pace, and an underlying tension remains the whole time that Mac and Nathan are getting to know each other. Ms. Shay creates characters that readers care about, and gives them realistic issues to face and grow through. This looks to be a promising series!

I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

This book is a wonderful start to a new series. This author has done extensive research into the field of firefighters. To that end, her books are so very life-like, I feel that I am right there in the middle of the action. It is almost like a movie being played. What really helps with that feeling is the book is written in a multiple POV format. Getting that glimpse into the minds of the different characters, really makes them more human and more easily understandable.

Trish is one of a group of women firefighters. The Sisters of Fire all graduated together 10 years ago. That training that they went through formed an unbreakable bond between them. Trish (Mac) is in an abusive relationship with a policeman, Rick. As the relationship between Trish and Rick further deteriorate, a new man enters Trish's life, Nathan. He is a kindergarten teacher. The difference between Rick and Nathan are like day and night. I adored Nathan and how he reacted to Trish's situation and helped her to overcome.

As well as introducing the Sisters of Fire and the relationship development between Trish and Nathan, the author does a wonderful job in laying the ground work of the other Sisters of Fire and their stories. I so look forward to reading those.

This is a slightly sexy story. There is a reference to the sexy scene but it was glossed over in a manner, that I would suggest a parent to say yay or nay to someone under the age of 18 in regarding to reading this.

Nothing Like Some Ladies in Charge!

This read was a first for me, not just one kick ass woman firefighter, but six. Six women that make up the Sisters of Fire, a tight knit group that have been together since thier days at the academy. While everybody is introduced in this first book, we focus on Mac, or Trish "Mac" Makenzie.

Let me put it mildly, Mac is awesome. She's good at her job and everybody knows it. She's a little stand offish and with a past like hers, it was easy to see why. Mac is involved with a real scumbag Rick and there was nothing I wanted more while reading, for him to get what was coming to him.

While we have Rick on one end, Nathan is on the other. He's the perfect man for Mac, however it's not anything she can see for herself at the moment. Unlike Rick, Nathan is calm, smart and not afraid to express his feelings, something Mac hasn't ever been comfortable with, but really wants to change all of that.

The book is well written as we go through quite an emotional journey with Mac in so few pages. Kathryn Shay did a nice job at setting up the characters, the scenes and the ending, that it felt like a lot more. There are six books in the series, each covering one of the ladies. Mac's story seemed like it would be hard to top, however each one of them has a story to tell. I was glad Mac's was wrapped up in this book and hope to visit her in the next one.

This first book in the series introduces us to six female firefighters that bonded 10 years ago during training and continue to support each other .
Trish “Mac” Mackenzie is one of those women. Though she’s an outstanding firefighter, her childhood was filled with abuse and sadly, her current relationship is as well. Casing Mac to have little self esteem and belief in herself.
Nathan is a kindergarten teacher who loves his students and is happy to be single. Though when he meets Mac, he is attracted to her, and realizes that her cop boyfriend is not good to her or for her. But he will not interfere. That is, until a violent episode injures Mac and Nathan steps in to help.
This is a well written and classic Ms Shay in that she creates stories that are real and thought provoking. A reminder that our experiences in our childhood will influence and affect us as adults. Also a reminder that domestic abuse exists even in homes one would never suspect.
I am looking forward to the next story in this promising series.

MORE THAN ENOUGH
..Katheryn Shay
#1 Sisters of Fire
At the academy five woman and two teachers bonded a name of Sisters of Fire was given to them. The first we meet is Trish and called Mac .
We meet Mac a firefighter, took a few showdowns for the others to realize she was not going to be a pushover. With Banks checking the second story of a house fire, stairwell is gone, and Mac getting a woman out and to safety.
Didn’t want to have shoulder that beam hit looked at, would they accept why the bruises.
Going home, a day off for Frank, with beer and a game on, saying sorry, that was not enough .Living with him and his abuse of throwing her across the room. His older brother was a cop and drank too much, together disaster.
Growing up in a traumatic situation Mac recreated it by choosing a man like Frank. With her job she is a winner. Would a major event have to happen before she could and would take the steps to work on her self esteem and how to chose a healthy relationship Good story that was handled well, and steps needed to get out of it,
Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion

I've come across a lot of milk toast types of heroines a lot lately, so I was super excited for Kathryn Shay's new series since she tends to create bada** heroines that I never fail to love. Sisters of Fire is about women as firefighters so you can't get much more bada** than that, and we're kicking the festivities off with Trish "Mac" Mackenzie. Mac has gone through a lot of abuse in her life that started as a child, so her self esteem is beaten down, and she ends up with someone who pushes her further down to a non existent level. Luckily, Nathan is about to come into her life though it's not an insta situation since she has to get rid of the nasiness that her significant other is, and try to somehow realize that she's worth something before really exploring something with him. Man this story was very emotional because I could totally relate with Mac throughout, and I felt like Kathryn Shay really did a fantastic job at handling this topic with such grace & dignity without making it seem unrealistic. I'm super excited for this new series, and HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

I received 'MoreThan Enough' as an ARC in exchange for a fair review. I couldn't stop reading this story, and was frequently moved to tears. That is extremely unusual for me, and was probably because in writing about Mac being abused Kathryn used a matter-of-fact description style that emphasized the tragedy of what women in this position accept.

Mac is a firefighter who should be working toward becoming a paramedic. Because her father belittled and abused her when she was a child, and her boyfriend continued the abuse after he moved into her house, she has no confidence in herself. Except as a firefighter, where she and the rest of her team know her competence. She tries to hide the abuse, even from her friends and family, because she is embarrassed that she accepts it.

Nathan is a kindergarten teacher. He loves his students and nephews and is not interested in a relationship, because women had never found him good husband material. When he meets Mac, he finds her attractive, interesting and admires everything she does. But she has an asshole for a boyfriend. He doesn't want to create problems for her.

When Rick, her live-in boyfriend, gets angry and slams into her at dinner at her brother's, matters come to a head.

With her usual skill, Kathryn Shay portrays the characters as whole people, with all their faults, problems and capabilities. I loved Mac, (or Trish as her feminine side is called) Nathan, the Sisters of Fire, and the other people through this book. This has become my new favorite of Kathryn's book and I am looking forward to the other books in this series.

Starting from her childhood Mac has never felt love or support which is why she doesn’t believe she deserves better than her current relationship with her boyfriend. She is an accomplished firefighter, but her dreams lay elsewhere but she doesn’t believe she is capable of achieving them. She has a close group of friends however she keeps her secrets private until the events of one night catapult Mac into making some long overdue changes.

Nathan finds his career as a teacher fulfilling even if not everyone agrees. He meets Mac as they have family in common and as she is in a relationship, he knows that friends is all they can be. The events of one night change everything and he is determined to show her the love and support that she has always deserved.

The struggle and growth of Mac’s character was authentic, and Nathan was patient and understanding as he allowed their relationship to progress at the pace she needed. I am looking forward to the stories of the members of the Sisters of Fire.

A story about a woman, Trish MacKenzie, that grew up in an abusive household and is now in a similar situation as an adult. Mac, as her co-workers call her, is a firefighter in Crystal City and outwardly seems as tough as they come; but, in her personal life, she doesn't have the same confidence. Trish meets a gentleman that she likes; but doesn't think she's worthy of him. This is her story of how she finally gets the emotional strength to get out of her current relationship and find a way to face her past and hopefully be able to move forward. She has a "band" of friends that all attended the academy together 10 years ago and are affectionately known as the Sisters of Fire. They rally around each other in times of need and joy.

I enjoyed this story. Kathryn Shay has a nice writing style that brings the reader into the lives of these people.

I received an ARC of this book from the author for an honest review.

Sisters of Fire is about a group of women fire fighters who were in the academy together and have stayed in tough through the years. Each book will introduce us to one of the women and we start with Mac. Mac grew up with a father that was a police officer and her brother followed in his foot steps. Mac had a difficult childhood and chose to not follow the male members of her family into the police academy but instead becoming a fire fighter. She is well respected among her coworkers but they have no idea what she's dealing with in her private life. This story brings some sensitive situations to light which Ms. Shay does a wonderful and very respectful job of writing it. We learn what Mac has dealt with and what courage it takes to ask for help from those around her in a postition to help her. Which leads to healing and new beginnings. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving my review.

Trish “Mac” Mackenzie is calm, cool and collected when she is on the line. She is determined and focused. Her personal lift however, is anything but idyllic. She's stuck in a relationship she knows she needs to get out of. She has her "Sisters of Fire" group to help her through but it isn't until she runs into Nathan Mitchell that she realizes that she she is worth more than what she has been settling for. Sometimes old habits are hard to break. Nathan immediately knows there could be something between them, but first he has to let her figure it out for herself. As things unravel, Nathan has to be the support that Trish needs if they ever want to be able to move forward. Kathryn definitely has a niche of writing realistic relationships. Sometimes everything can't be sunshine and rainbows. Kathryn creates characters that face problems head on. They deal with issues and have discussions. This was a great start to the series and I can't wait to read the next book.

This is the first book in author Kathryn Shay’s Sisters of Fire series. Trish starts out with Rick, who really is the worst. I’ve often heard that some women pick a guy just like their dad, and in this case it’s true. Fortunately, Trish has a good support system to help her. Nathan, unlike Rick, is a genuinely nice guy. He’s an elementary school teacher and is all the good things a nice guy should be. This story has a full cast of characters since Trish is a firefighter, Rick is a policeman, lives and families are intertwined, and there’s so much going on building the back stories for future books. I enjoyed the story because Trish is a multi-faceted character. Nathan and Rick are the stereotypical good guy and bad guy, but there were so many other characters that the story moved quickly and I am now looking forward to the next book!

This is the 1st on a new series and quick reads and is Trish / Mac and Nathan’s story. Mac is a firefighter who has a close bond and friendship with 5 other women who trained together. Mac grew up being verbally abused and now has an abusive live-in cop boyfriend Rick, who is friends with her brother. Mac as no self-confidence and is embarrassed to confide what is going on in her relationship. Nathan is a kindergarten teacher who suspect what Mac is going through, and when things come to a head and she has the strength to put an end to things, he is there to support her. The connection between Nathan and Mac is intense and undeniable. This is a well written quick read which is an emotional roller coaster, and with healing, friendships, drama, suspense, and love. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

Once again Kathryn Shay has out done herself!!!

I have read ALL of her series!!!

This series reflexes on the lives of female firefighters.

Being married to a firefighter for 19 years I can emphasize with females in the field.

In this book you will find the main female character going through real life situations of domestic abuse.
Denial, embarrassment, fear etc. Along with her everyday life of working in a male dominant field.

Kathryn Shay has once again done her homework showing real life situations as well as showing the bond firefighters have ... a FAMILY no one can understand!!!

READ this book!!! You will love it!!! The hardest part is waiting for the next book to come out!!!

Trish Mackenzie is one of the minority female firefighters in her state. She also has the support of her house and the encouragement from her team to advance her training and become a paramedic. Yet at home her police officer boyfriend is not encouraging and is downright evil. Rick is physically and emotionally abusive. When Trish starts to get to know Nathan better, she finds that he is just a nice guy. Will Trish be able to overcome her abusive relationships to find a happy and fulfilling relationship with Nathan?

A wonderful story by Ms. Shay that touches current social problems with grace and dignity. She also brings attention to these issues and even though in a fictional setting, there are ways to obtain help. You are walked through ways to find help. Kudos MS. Stay!

4 Stars!

Kathryn Shay is a brand new author for me and such a good decision I made with this one. I'll be honest, the blurbs of this series are what initially drew me in but what kept me were the words and those characters that brought all those pesky feels.

This is the first standalone in the new Sisters of Fire series (doesn't that series name just make you smile a bit ladies!) and what an unexpected, all in your feels journey this was for Mac and Nathan. From the moment they really connect nothing will ever be the same and I was here for all the moments.

This was really good and I'm looking forward to the next.

I definitely recommend this book.

A great start to a new series, 6 women firefighters that met 10 years ago in the fire academy and have kept in touch but now are going through personal issues. Instead of the brotherhood we should say the sisterhood. Mac/Trish is going through a rough time in her relationship with a police officer, who is abusive to her. Nathan is a kindergarten teacher, who comes to Trish's rescue as a friend but soon more develops.

This is a quick read but full of story and emotion. Yes, I did shed a few tears. Trish is a very strong female but has no self confidence, but she grew throughout the story. Nathan is such a sweetheart, I fell in love with him from the beginning. This is a story of new beginnings!

The Sisters of Fire are a group of strong and hilarious women who are always there for each other whether through unsaid support as well as when they need to lean on them. We meet Trish aka Mac first and well I wanted to shake her as well as hug her at the same time due to the confronting situation she is in, everyone has an idea of what's going on but it's not until a situation happens where there is no hiding it that she finally gets to breaking point. There are plenty of laughter and tears as we see a group of women come together to help a friend in need as well as learn of a past that has worn Trish down, a brother who should have done more and a man who wants Trish to be the amazing woman he knows she is. I absolutely loved this read and can not wait to read more in this series!!!!

More Than Enough ~Sisters of Fire bk 1 by Kathryn Shay
Yet another brilliant firefighter book from Kathryn, only this time it's the women who are the heroines.
I love all of Kathryn's books, so I am not disappointed at all. Kathryn continues to write amazing stories, that bring to life the names on the pages and leaves you feeling that you are also there with them.
This has a strong storyline that involves abuse between Trish aka Mac and her boyfriend who just so happens to be a cop who likes his drink.
I am not going to go further into the story. It deserves to be enjoyed without spoilers.ease Please grab your copy today you won’t be disappointed.
I highly recommend this book and I am looking forward to reading the next in the series.
Thank you, Kathryn, for the advance copy for my honest review.

As a survivor of an abusive relationship, I found this book to be both hopeful and empathetic. Mac’s character is written with great kindness, and I appreciated that. To me, this book had pretty much everything – heat, drama, suspense, and (in my opinion) a fabulous ending. The Sisters of Fire looks to be a series where we’ll be on edge for each new character’s story. This is Mac’s; she’s a firefighter in an abusive relationship after an abusive childhood, and how my heart sank when I realized that her brother and the abuser are friends. Nathan is a breath of fresh air in that environment, and I fell in love. I am truly looking forward to more in this series.

More Than Enough is great intro to new series

More Than Enough was a terrific read. I so loved each of the “Sisters of Fire” as their characters were introduced. They are bound together by an incident that happened 10 years ago. This story focuses on Trish and her relationship with Rick. No doubt each of these women are strong and have faced challenges in their careers but they also have personal challenges. While I found this to be an emotional story it was one I could not put down. Kathryn Shay has once again given us real world issues in her thought provoking books. I look forward to the next book in the Sisters of Fire series.

This book was on fire! I could not put it down and finished it almost in one day. This is the first book in a new series with women firefighters. First book is about “Mac”. She is dating a cop who had my blood boiling through the whole book! I don’t want to give anything away. But then a nice guy who is her sister in laws brother helps show her the good in her as she was torn down her whole life. You will not be able to put this book down and makes you antsy for the 2nd book! Great new series. I was mad, happy, laughed and cried in this!

Please note that this book does touch on a Trigger subject.
Trish (Mac) is a firefighter who is a strong women but is fighting her rough childhood and her rough current relationship.
Nathan is a kindergarten teacher and also the brother of Trish's sister-in-law.
This story flows wonderfully. The characters are so likeable and realistic.
You're given a nivbackgriund on the other Sisters of Fire who met ten years ago.
This series is about strong women and the men who love them.
