Khonsu the traveller, Khonsu the healer, Khonsu the god betrayed and abused, enduring in agony down through the centuries, waiting to be free.
Tortured, diminished, encased in stone I rage, and suffer, and rage again. Through the sand and mud above my head I hear the muffled cries of my people fading away. The chisels fall silent on Trajan's Kiosk when a roman pretends to be pharaoh. The prayers no longer come. Egypt is no more. I would mourn for my sweet Nile child but my heart is a shrivelled thing now, bitter in its bonds, persisting in pain.
I sink into fantasies of revenge, and remembered pleasure, and revenge again.
I hear him, betrayer, apostate, as he scratches through life after life, unfulfilled and needy. Trying and failing to make things right. We will meet again, immortality makes that inevitable, and then he will help me home. Back to the Nile, to the red sands and the black mud, the inundation and the reed beds, to the temple floored in silver, and the ceiling of painted stars. That dream keeps me almost sane.
When this prison shatters around me, I will use him, and abuse him, and use him again.
I will bind him to me with all the deviant acts he secretly desires. His soul cries out its need to atone, and with his guilt I will engineer my way back, to where the praises are singing and the sunlight will burn the degradation away. I will make it as though this never happened, it will all be just another blue lotus dream in the mind of a god.
Khonsu is a time twisting paranormal suspense with themes of revenge and guilt, and how to exquisitely hurt the ones we love, if they need it.
Welcome to the dark world of Malicious Gods: Egypt. A collection of standalone modern tales, both magical and non-magical, featuring deities from Ancient Egypt. You’ll find reincarnated Gods, assassins, gangs, madness, and different realities. Expect high heat and morally ambiguous themes. Seductive and often twisted, they are not for the fainthearted.
Khonsu was a kind God who wanted to help his people. The one time he is unable to he is taken advantage of and punished. Many centuries later he is freed from his jail and allowed to exact revenge on the soul who committed the crime.
I wanted to like this book but there was a disconnect for me. The writing was good. Although, I did feel a lot was being said but at the same time nothing of consequence was being mentioned. If that makes any sense lol. I mean I did like how Khonsu's story from past and present intertwined and how it went from one life time to the next. I also like how it all came back around. I just was not entirely sure what was the point of this story. It's not a love story that's for sure. I guess it is more a story of dire actions having consequences.
Overall an ok read.
*I was provided and ARC from Gay Romance Reviews, this is my honest review.*
This book is exactly what I was looking for in this Egyptian Gods series! Amazing representation of the Gods and Egyptian stuffs while being contemporary and paranormal too. It's the perfect mix of everything, a bit dark and romantic at times, twisted and has true/real aspects too. Loved the Tutankhamon connection too, and the whole reincarnation cycle is just mind blowingly amazing.
The starting scene is really good and it captures your interest right away. I was fascinated with all the things on the pages and couldn't wait to read and know more. Khonsu in the past and Kon in the present. Horemheb in the past, Remmillard in the present. I just loved it and couldn't put it down.
Khonsu/Kon is so well written and I loved that we got to see more of him and that he has a kind heart and not so malicious as you think.
Rem was a fascinating person and I loved how he was thinking and how kinky he was. And well, when these two finally met, when their time had finally come, just wow. Mind blowing!
Really enjoyed reading this book, it was everything I was looking for. The best in the series so far (alongside with Shai - but that's a different story, that's perfect because twisted and dark), and this is perfect because it's perfectly true to the real Egyptian Gods - while still a bit dark and twisted.
I finished the book and I immediately went back to the beginning and started to read it again. I needed answers but I was still in the darkness. The ending is so crazy, it makes you question what have you read. Did you miss something important? What was really happening? Is it a HEA or a HFN or it just ended? So many questions.
Simply wow..... This was something completely new and I loved it.
I love all things Egyptian and this take on things was just simply wow and oh so hot.
The jumping back and forth was mesmerizing and how Kon and Rem together were just so beautifully written that you couldn't help but fall in love with these two.
The twist and turns kept me hooked to my kindle and actually read this amazing story in one sitting and blinked when I was at the end of the book.
Romilly King, yet again you have blown me away with your story telling. Simply brilliant.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Wow! You can feel the heat of the sun and smell the rain and storm. Vivid imagery. Khonsu is a god, you can almost feel it radiating off of him. He’s both kind and cruel in the way only a god could be.
I loved the descriptions of the rituals, and the flashbacks to ancient Egypt. The incorporation of little details we know combined in with the story make it all more real.
The concept of submitting to Khonsu to relieve Rem of his guilt is also fascinating.
It’s a dark story, for sure. But I loved every word!
This is a story about love. Grief stricken love, penitent love, sacrificial love, redemptive love. The horrible choice a grief and guilt burdened Horemheb made in what he saw as his last ditch effort to protect his pharaoh. As Remillard (Rem) he's felt burdened by what he thought was the wrongdoings of his family. When circumstances present him with Khonsu (Kon) he is both enamored and relieved. Will he finally be free of this never-ending heaviness in his soul?
Through time and space Khonsu waited for his moment to exact retribution for the treatment he received at the direction of Horemheb. As Kon he releases his pent up fury on Rem.
This story is poignant but in no way is it sweet. A stunning example of how true sacrifice is freeing with an ending as enigmatic as the story and its characters. I was enraptured from beginning to end.
Wow! This story is completely different and it captures the malicious gods' essence so well. It surprised me in a great way and I really enjoyed all the darkness in it and also all the Egyptian history facts it portrays, though it was a little too much sometimes.
It alternates between the past and the present, showing us the characters in their past life in Ancient Egypt and how they meet again in the present. There is the perfect parallel of what happened then and what needs to happen now, and although it's a dark situation, I was so on board with that!
It's not a romance, it's a dark and twisted tale of a god and his betrayer from the past, and how far they'll go to make things right and free both their souls.
Romily King does a phenomenal job of taking unanswered questions from the condition of King Tut’s tomb, the mythos around the god Khonsu, and the history of a couple of important leaders during Tut’s time, and crafts an amazing journey through time and fate. The detail is amazing and, when you read Romily’s comments at the end, the effort he put into the research is pretty amazing.
It’s hard to describe the book without giving away too much. A modern day, troubled scion of a family of archaeologists, who happen to have also been tomb robbers, stumbles across an extremely valuable statue while liquidating his family’s assets. The statue somehow is linked to a recurring nightmare he’s had his entire life.
The story is mysterious, powerful, and unexpected – the premise is totally unique and so engaging. While Khonsu is not the friendliest guy, and there’s definitely some dark scenes, the scenes support the story and do not overwhelm it.
WOW!! this was an intense and dark story that I really wanted to experience. When I heard these stories were coming out I was excited and more so that Romilly was part of it. The story telling was enlightening and I like how we had flashbacks from present to past. It really help the story wrap up at the end. The descriptions were detailed enough that gave me the visuals I needed to be immersed in the story and Khonsu...well what can I say about this god...malicious but also a caring god to his followers. He shows it to Rem in all ways. I love dark and this is dark so if you are kind of squeamish/sensitive this book is not for you.
This is a story about redemption that is centuries in the making. Following what was a common sacrifice to save a beautiful and pure love that shouldn't have been but a blip to the Egyptian god Khonsu, he finds himself sacrificed senselessly and brutally, kicking off the millennium long dance of atonement between Khonsue and Remillard. In present day Remillard is mired deep in guilt and self-recrimination which comes off as a free floating guilt complex until we start getting insights into his past... or rather his many past lifetimes. There are flashbacks that serve to slowly lift the veil into the crime committed by Remillard against his beloved god Khonsu. By the end I was having ah-hah moments every other page where we understand more of Remillard and why he is the way he is and even more why he is the way he is WITH KON (Khonsu). There is mystery and love and sacrifice in this relatively short novel that Romilly King has created with her usual deft handling of language, history, and psychology. I was swept away and recommend this addition to the multi-author series about malicious gods of Egypt. ***ARC review***
What a great read! Fantastic! This is Romilly King as we know her: the master of the ancient dark erotic thrills! In this quite short novella, she again could create a whole world, a universe, and it is rounded up by sheer perfection in its writing, atmosphere and passion. And the big circuit of events close up in the end as well, making all ends meet and me sigh in affection. Just a pure bravo from my side! Absolute full 5 stars! I received it for free but leave a review freely and voluntarily because I absolutely more than enjoyed reading it, and I want more of this!
Romilly King definitely knows how to tell a story! Khonsu and Remillard have been bound through time and they are destined to come together once again to not only take revenge but to atone for misdeeds done in the name of love. This story was captivating and I felt the need of these two characters to redeem the wrongs of the past....whatever the cost. Excellent book!!
Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. Rem is the reincarnated soul that never willing to move. Cycle after life cycle Khonsu plans his revenge. After finding a ancient treasure in his old family home, Rem is tortured by a dream of a god that uses him only to discard him but is it dream.. Will he willing give up his soul to right a wrong that his old life committed? Will Khonsu regain what was once stolen.. dang this was hot and dark, leaving the reader on edge to see the out come.
Khonsu is an immortal god. The imagery that the author created was fantastic!! It was dark and intense!! I loved the flashbacks!! It helped with how the story was portrayed. The story captured me at the very beginning and didn’t let go until the end. Khonsu is really well written, highly recommend. I’m voluntarily leaving a review form an advanced copy that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
This one is really tough to review without giving away too much of the story. It’s brutal but beautiful, and those who are easily triggered should pay attention to any warnings. Romilly King is such an imaginative and descriptive writer, and Khonsu is fascinating. It’s one of the most disturbing but interesting stories I’ve read in quite a long time.
This book was enthralling. You get the otherworldly magic that draws you in until the very last page, plus all the cool historical things out of the thousands of years of ancient Egypt. Gods and reincarnation play a major role in the pull for he story as Khonsu is now once free to get retribution for the betrayal he suffered at the hands of those he trusted. You get dark and twisted, romance, magic, gods, reincarnations and definite steam. Couldn’t put it down
Not what I was expecting, and I think that’s a good thing. A blend of Egyptian Mythology, history, and fantastical paranormal devices. This is sure to satisfy those with an interest in mythology and dark reads and no desire for a straightforward HEA.
In typical Romilly King style this book combines history, bdsm dark and light as well as a spanking great story. Pun intended. She obviously did a fair amount of research to produce her book in the Malicious Gods series. It’s lots of fun to read and the only real complaint that I have is that I wanted it to be longer.
Bloody dark Meticulously researched Egyptian lore intertwined as a supernatural world with modern English emo gore. Very gory, particularly unquieting, exercises of antique rituals based on mortally deviant practices, linking past and present, centuries of guilt and painful expiation. Exquisitely excruciating. Not suited for all readers, but a fine specimen in its own niche.
What a twist!!! It was incredibly different, but I could not stop reading. It captures you and will not let you go. It was so amazing learning more about Egypt, their rituals and care and preservation of artifacts. The steamy scenes, though a bit cringy, was absolutely amazing. The descriptions were so vivid, I felt like I was there. Khonsu is definately kind and cruel when he needs to be, but he is a just god. I would have like a better ending where Khonsu and Haromheb got together in the end, but as long as Horemheb did to hurt Khonsu again then I am happy. I loved the characters and how Rem submitted to make up for past mistakes. Romilly King well done on another amazing book.
This book encompassed everything it was supposed to, without dragging it out and I really liked that! The history nerd in my rejoiced at the end when Romilly explained some of the history and why it was written the way it did! This book also took modern feelings I’m sure we all feel and have a new twist in them. For someone who believes in reincarnation this was a wild take on it and I loved every second. It was great writing and definitely what I expected from a book of the Malicious Gods series.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4. Not my fave work by this author, I think the romantic element was missing. Definitely plays in the dark and Romilly is never afraid to go there, but there's usually an underlying romantic/lovey sort of feeling that I just didn't get in this book. I love Egyptian history and there is authenticity to some of elements throughout the story. I really liked the ending, it left it open enough for your imagination to run, but still gave you a clear steer.
I received an ARC for an honest and voluntary review.
An odd story. Non-limear with multiple perspectives.
As part of the funeral rites for Tutankhamun, his general Horemheb imprisons the god Khonsu in a gold shrine. Centuries of reincarnations later Remillard Hayes, who was once Horemheb frees Khonsu from his prison. Khonsu has some sadistic fun with Rem, which he doesn’t hate. In the end, Rem sacrifices himself so Khonsu can turn back the clock. This new remade Horemheb is bound to Khonsu, not repeating his mistake.
The back and forth between time periods was a bit distracting and the sadistic fun wasn’t as fun as I was hoping for.
