The Weary Traveler

Rate this book
Lorelei Fischer desperately needed somewhere to spend the night, and, as if by magic, Moonlit Shores Manor appeared.

But there’s a cost for everything, magic included.

More than willing to escape her old life and fill the open position at the bizarre bed and breakfast, Lorelei quickly learns of the dangers waiting for her. She’s only human, after all, and casting spells, shifting into wild animals, and caring for mythical creatures aren’t exactly in the wheelhouse of a former barista and art school failure. At the manor, faeries might pull tricks on you while washing linens, werewolves might try to rough up your bellboy, and a shadowy presence in the woods might be your undoing if you ask too many questions.

With the help of her supernatural, live-in coworkers, Moonlit Shores Manor could be Lorelei’s sanctuary from her past mistakes. Though as the truth of the manor’s history unravels, it could just as likely become another place Lorelei must flee to save not just her reputation but her life.

DNF @ 10%/ 3 chapters

2.5 stars, rounded up.

Could I keep reading? Probably, but I'm tired of reading books where the main character is thrown into situations without support or explanation and is just supposed to know what to do. A little bit? Sure, but at this point I feel like the whole book is going that route. She passes out from seeing a werewolf, thinks the manor is full of aliens and is told "that's not it" and before anything can be explained we are rushing through for the surprise visitors. No, please. I understand it gives urgency and puts the MC into funny situations, but I really just want someone to sit her down and explain things because I'm getting places and people's names mixed up. Nothing feels solid.

But, it is quirky and has a magical inn-- sorry, manor-- and she's going to work there figuring things out. I want to love this so much, this is exactly the kind of setting and type of book I want to read. Instead, I'll just go read Innkeeper Chronicles again.

I listened to this on Audible and I LOVED the narrator. I would definitely recommend this audiobook.

The book itself was fun and whimsical with a variety of mythical creatures and humor to boot. It definitely gave me Every Heart a Doorway and Alice in Wonderland vibes. The pacing was a little off for me but all in all I really enjoyed it.

„The Weary Traveler“ is the first book in the paranormal urban fantasy series “Vacancy” by A.K. Caggiano. The series follows Lorelei Fisher, a barista whose artists dreams didn’t survived art school, who wandering in search for some place to pass the night comes across Moonlit Shores Manor, a very ‘magical’ place and home to all kind of creatures, from shifters to fae. After the initial shock Lorelei formally jumps at the opportunity to leave her unsuccessful old life behind and take the position as Manor receptionist of sorts.

“The Weary Traveler” is a fun and enjoyable read, fast-paced and twisted, with good descriptions, interesting characters, with a fine dose of humor on top. A very entertaining story, with both witty and whimsical situations, with echoes of 'Alice in Wonderland' with a much more credible story and relatable characters.

This one starts out really exciting and intriguing and quickly grows really fun as the reader is introduced to a ton of supernaturals … however for me, it didn’t stay that way. New supernaturals were constantly added in, usually I find this fun but in this instance, I couldn’t help but wonder if they were there for the sake of variety of species. Not all introductions had substance.

While it remained fun, it grew very slow-paced and unfortunately didn’t hold my attention for long. The first couple hours it did, but the next couple hours, I realized I was growing bored.
However, this does seem to be the beginning of a fun, promising world. I wouldn’t call it ‘bad’ by any means, just not for me.

3 stars.

Note:
I listened to the audiobook. This was my first experience with this narrator, and I quickly discovered that she’s one of my faves, if that makes sense. She’s great! Smooth voice, good pronunciation, appropriate tones, etc.

RECOMMENDED Original story that had me hooked straight away, I actually imagined myself in her place many times and it was not hard to continue listening in the wee small hours. I am so looking forward to the next book coming out. Loved the quirky characters and the antics of her friends.

This was a nice cosy fantasy with a side of mystery.
It was a bit slow in the middle but the pace and plot picked up in the second half.

A magical inn sounds like my kind of good time but the pacing is off. I’m annoyed with Lorelei and less than impressed by the way she left her fiancé at the altar and now is escaping the consequences by hiding out at the manor. She’s probably going to become less of a people pleaser and gain some gumption but I don’t care to stick around to find out. While I thought it would be fun to try a different genre from this author, I think I’ll stick with her fantasy romance going forward.

Characters: Lorelei is a 22 year old white B&B secretary and former barista. This is set at the Moonlit Shores Manor.

Content notes: FMC left her fiancé at the altar, secondary character with scarred white eye, alcohol, gendered pejorative, ableist language, mention of past coworker having a stalker

I really like this author, but I needed this book to be more. It was a little too cosy for me or something. The drama felt not enough somehow. Like - it was high stakes, but emotionally I wasn’t hooked. I also found the whole hating of the love interest’s girlfriend really difficult. She’s a classic annoying girlfriend type, and… I dunno. I just ain’t feeling that. And so I ain’t feeling the chemistry between the FMC and her potential life interest. I need mooooore! I’ll still read this series, it’s not terrible or anything, but I guess my expectations are lowered. I think this book shows real potential, and so it makes sense that this is an earlier book by an author whose later work I absolutely love.

Lorelei runs away from a situation she just doesn't want to be in, in her car, just wanting to find a place to go, when she finds the manor. A place of many people, strange to her, but some kind and accepting, some not so much. Many changes happen to her and those around her, ups and downs, happiness, and sadness, but the story isn't over.

I really enjoyed this book, tho it took me a little to REALLY get into. It is book 1 of the Vacancy Series, so I can't wait to see where the story takes us!

Great for all who love a little magic and magical creatures. It made me smile and want to read till I couldn't keep my eyes open.

Magic, mythical creatures, and witches surely it was a charmed inspired story. I loved all the characters and especially Ziah. I was so disappointed with the audiobook. The narrator made it a painful eleven hours of listening. It took me 10 days to get through the robotic soulless style of narration. I purchased the book and started reading it because I couldn't listen anymore. Nonetheless it's a book I loved. Although I wish one of the witches wasn't named Tuatha because it seemed a little copied from one of my favorite Charmed Episodes. The story and the writing is 5 star worthy and I look forward to Book Two & Three.

I love this author, her writing, her storytelling, etc.

But it’s impossible for me to like a book where the main character is the weakest link. And not just that, but a liability. A net negative. A burden. An imposition, a deadweight, a hinderance, a faintling. In every scene in this book she is at least one, and sometimes all, of these things.

And it would be ok, in fact normal in a story, if that eventually began to change. But no, she is the weakest link throughout the entire novel. If there is conflict, her idiocy or helplessness caused it, and the plot is just everyone else trying to clean up her mess. Cuz gods know she certainly can’t. She can’t do much of anything at all.

Except for maybe the once or twice when she got lucky, and that was it. Luck, at best, is all she has.

What does she bring to this magical table? Couldn’t say. Mediocre friendship? A talent for making signs? Paper organization skills? And eyes, I guess, so that we may observe this fantasy world that she has stepped into but does nothing for.

The entire plot relies on secrets, of which there are many many many, and of course I hate info dumping as much as the next guy, so I’m all for some secrets. But the problem was, ZERO of these secrets actually needed to be held. There was no point, not a single one, in keeping any of them. And Lorelei’s secret remains intact at the end, arguably the stupidest secret of the book. She has no reason to keep it- not from her friends. And friendship is her entire point, correct? So she isn’t even managing the one thing she should be able to do. But the next book needs a plot, I guess. I assume bc Byron is a human and stole magic and caused a calamity, thus the supposed artista and Conrad bias against them. Am I right? Ugh I don’t care.

Look, I’m petty. I don’t like a fantasy/magic novel where the main character can’t do magic. *Especially* if every. other. character. can. So I’m already disappointed. But then she also has nothing to make up for it. I kept holding out hope that she would eventually garner some talent of value, even if, very begrudgingly, not magical, but she doesn’t. She is the weakest character, and she verrrry much remains that way. Stagnant and in the way.

Maybe I’m being harsh, bc in real life, after all, we are all worthy of love, no matter how useless our reader overlords think we are! We are not defined by our achievements! We matter even if we don’t contribute!

But alas, no, in a novel I want my MC to make me proud. Is that so much to ask?

I had the end figured out about 20% into this book.

I just wish Lorelei was more interesting. That’s literally all it would’ve taken for me to give this five stars, because everything else was great.

Disappointing.

The Weary Traveler by AK Caggiano

✨🧚‍♂️🐺🦄📖

Synopsis:
When Lorelei Fischer arrives and Moonlit Shores Manor, exhausted, lost and with a pretty big secret hidden in the trunk of her car, she really had no idea what she was checking-in to. But Fate has a funny way of plopping you down right where you sorta-don’t-but-totally-do belong. And, as it turns out, she’s not the only person at the Manor with a secret, although “person” might be a stretch…
But Lor needs a fresh start, and nothing says “I’m starting over” like accepting a job at a magical bed and breakfast. It’s a perfect place to reset, aside from the fact that she is now the only human in a world full of snarky warlock handymen, oddly compelling receptionists and a mystical secret that may threaten not just her own hidden past, but the fate of the manor itself.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Review:
Caggiano delivers. Every. Single. Time.

I was hooked from the first page. Caggiano skillfully brings magic into the mundane and never fails to sweep a reader off their feet.

Lorelei is a go-getter who can roll with the punches better than most beings, human or otherwise. But she is also a scared young woman whose entire life just got upended and I love the growth that she is starting on in this first book.

As amazing as the FMC is, I am even more impressed with the large cast of supporting characters. Each one has a vivid life of their own, and the way that all of their stories weave into one another is truly remarkable. Honestly, I’m pretty bummed that I can’t jump into this book, rent a room and stay for awhile.

In addition to being a fabulous introduction to a series, it’s also a crash course in an ongoing elaborate fantasy world. And though that may sound intimidating, Caggianos lighthearted and humorous writing style make such complexity seem easy. There are so many fun quips and jokes throughout the novel, and some moments that literally had me laughing out loud.

I cannot recommend Caggianos work highly enough, and The Weary Traveler is a wonderful place to start.

Also: The Audiobook is amazing! Ellen Quay did an incredible job. Her voice brought even more humor and individuality to the wild variety of characters required for this story and I completely loved it.

A fun and enchanting novel in the young adult fantasy genre, this first book of a three-book series introduces a variety of characters, unfolding back stories, and plot twists that will all (eventually) be wrapped up in the final book.

Caggiano writes captivating worlds and characters, building them organically and in subtle layers, and no main character is as simple as the first related impressions of the main character might suggest. I happen to love that about Caggiano — her characters are relatable in that they are always learning more about others and about themselves, they’re rarely static.

In a style that brings both humor and serendipity to many of her novels, Caggiano employs somewhat veiled foreshadowing (keep track of the prophecies) that subtly guide the reader toward delightful plot twists and character development. These little “Easter egg” moments are one of the fun highlights of these novels, and I hope you’ll enjoy finding them in all three of the Vacancy series.

My libraries aren’t carrying these books yet, but I would like to see them on shelves. I read them via the online mega retailer’s e-book subscription, something I rarely do because my libraries are so well stocked, but these three books (had to read them all) were motivation enough for me to plop down cash. Well done, A. K. Caggiano!

3.5 ⭐️ I loved the Villains and Virtues books by the author so I was hoping these would have more of the same lovable characters with charming banter who felt genuine. This was… light and entertaining enough. It’s a lot of low-stakes slap stick silliness that kind of falls flat. No real complaints per se but the character all felt very one dimensional, their communication was stilted and with the exception of her and Grier, there didn’t really seem to be much building up into actual friendship. And the big action bit at the end seemed forced and out of place and just overall confusing. It ended well enough that I don’t feel like I need to read the next two books. And that doesn’t mean that the story was wrapped up just that there didn’t really feel like there is anything I need to explore further because bother really happened. And also, can I just say it doesn’t make me like the FMC overly much when she’s just essentially disappeared off the face of the earth after running away when she admits that her ex and family are all really good people? Who’s paying her half of the rent and utilities? She paid off the wedding deposits but someone had to cover her work shifts for a couple weeks and her mom is probably making herself sick worrying.

I decided to read this book because I loved every single A.K. Caggiano book I've read so far, so I thought, why not. I really wasn't sure what to expect going into this book since I went in pretty much blind so I have to admit that at first I wasn't so sure of this book. It definitely isn't my favorite book by this author, but by the time I finished the book, I have to say that it still was a very fun read. It is a bit chaotic, and for a relatively short book, it does feel like a lot is going on and that there isn't a clear plotline. The book is about Lorelei, a human who accidently finds herself at a magical bed and breakfast filled with many different magical beings (warlocks, elves, shifters, and more, for example). Lorelei ends up joining the staff and must hide the fact that she is human. There are a lot of random events that occur during the course of the book and I feel like you don't really get a sense of where the story intends to take the reader until the very end with the reveal about Conrad (one of the manor's staff members and a warlock) and his brother. The story feels a bit all over the place, but I think if you are just looking for a fun read with a lighter plot, then it is definitely fun. I really love A.K. Caggiano distinct writing style, and I like her type of humor. I will definitely continue on with the series because it's just pure fun (even if the plot is a bit jumbled).

I was going to push through this but then looked at my bookshelf and realized how many books I have to read so it just wasn’t worth it. Even though I DNFd it there wasn’t really anything wrong with the book it just wasn’t for me. Lorelei was just not a character I could get behind. She just flat out annoyed me. She said as a coward who just ran away from everything and lied about everything else. Even when those IMPORTANT things should have been passed onto people who took her in: add to that the fact she ran away from her family, her fiancé, everyone. And during the whole of the book I read she sent me text to her mom saying I’m fine. That’s it. Nothing else. She didn’t call her mom, we didn’t get any backstory to if her family is awful nothing. Just a story about how she grew apart from her fiancé, who was a good man (according to her) so she ran on their wedding. There are so many times she shows how spineless and untrustworthy she is. Not to mention immature. If I had to read about a grown ass woman sticking out her tongue one more time..:

This is how I would want to find out that magic is real, by escaping to a magical Bed and Breakfast. That would be a dream come true.

This was such a fun story. There were some great jokes, I laughed out loud multiple times while reading.

Lorelie is very relatable. She arrived into a magical plane without even realizing it. She was meeting each person and their type of magic (plus the new creatures she's learning about). She took it in stride and has been very helpful.

Conrad has so many secrets. I want to know all of them. Also the way he secretly cares about Lorelie is very sweet. The book, swoon. I love whenever they are together in a scene.

Lorelie found the best found family within the Inn. I love all the side characters and how they look out for each other.

I have questions and theories and will be diving into book 2 quickly.

The first in the vacancy series is a 3.5 round up to 4 for me! The world is super cute and the story is delightfully fast paced. Though there were moments it felt like it was more a set of short stories about our lead and people of the manor, towards the end the plot really emerged and I was extremely intrigued with what was going to happen next to Lore and everyone. I really enjoyed the characters as well and the fact that this is a found family and a slow burn romance. Lore is a like able relatable character though I still feel like the reason she ends up in this world a bit unrealistic. Maybe it will be better understood and wrapped up in the next books, but it felt more like a silly way to get our MC into this world. Besides this though extremely fun cozy winter read ❤️☃️❤️

I also listened to this on audio and loved the narrator! If you are able give it a listen!

Lorelei was a interesting and likeable character. She stumbles upon the supernatural world and we are instantly immersed in this world. It caught my attention early on but as the book progressed my attention waned. The story had a variety of supernaturals, humor, and villains. Honestly, I’m not sure if I will continue the story. I slowed down for me in pacing halfway through and I struggled with the book. I’m not sure if I will continue with this series. I would recommend this book to young adult readers as the characters seemed to be in their early 20s and anyone who enjoys reading supernatural books.
I listened to the audiobook and I enjoyed the narrator. She used a variety of voices and tones and it was very easy to follow along.

Book 1 in Caggiano's new series Vacancy. I really enjoyed the smooth narration on this one as well as the story line with all the paranormal characters. A great intro with mysteries and twists and turns. Our main character is Lorelei, a human who's somehow found herself at the Moonlit Manor which seems to be a paranormal world all in of itself. Her typical behavior is when the going gets tough she gets going but when the going gets tough for her here - will she stay or flee as usual?!? I can't say enough how much I love these characters and I can't wait for more!

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

I read this as an audiobook and I think that made it easier for me to consume the story. This is my first read from the author and I think it's a good start! The writing voice is different than I'm used to so it took me some time to get into the flow but once I was in it, I was immersed into the story.

The story is a slower build than I'm used to with a gradual introduction to the characters, world, and magic but I think it was done decently but those of us readers who know all the different types of paranormals may not be as surprised about the different paranormal creatures. Even once I finished the book, I still was left with questions about the world and magic but it does make me interested in reading the next book.

I was slightly frustrated when the characters didn't give the MC any support or explain anything of the new world to her. Especially since they knew she didn't know anything. I felt the character kind of meandered through and didn't quite have a direction for the story until the end. It was mainly the character learning and exploring the new world, which is fine, but I think I like having more of a goal or point to the story and the stakes could be higher so readers could be more invested. I didn't really know who or what was the obstacle/antagonist until the end.

If you're looking for a steamy paranormal romance, you don't get that in this book. Other than some lusty thoughts, you don't get any romance in the story yet so you may want to lower your expectations to a slow burn romance which I'm hoping to see in the next book.

Still, my interest is piqued and I do like where the author is going with the story. I like that there are variety of paranormal races in the manor and everyone has a role. I'm curious enough to read the next book to see where we go with Lorelei. Recommended if you like slower exploratory paranormal books with vibes similar to the Innkeeper Chronicles series by Ilona Andrews but it's definitely interpreted differently but still an enjoyable read.

3.2 out of 5 rating for me!

I enjoyed this read. It is funny, a bit sarcastic, sometimes silly, and always interesting. The characters are interesting and I enjoyed getting to know them. And I look forward to reading more of their stories. There are a few things that drive me nuts though. There were spelling issues but not many and it wasn't too big a deal. Some of the main characters are in their early to mid-20s....they act like teens, or college freshmen at best. I would be more likely to recommend this to teens than adults. Still good enough I will be reading books 2 and 3 though. But Conrad really needs to stop dating that blond witch with a B. Uggg hate her lol.

As Lorelei tries to flee her problems she stumbles upon a whole new world. One filled with magic and magical creatures. Can she make a fresh start, or is this just another thing she’ll need to run from?

A. K. Caggiano has set the stage for what is sure to be an interesting and exciting series. I’m looking forward unraveling the secrets and finding out more about all of the characters we were introduced to.

Ellen Quay brought the story and characters to life. I was entertained by her performance, and I look forward to listening to more of her narrations.

I absolutely adore A.K. Caggiano's writing style. This book is cozy, and invites you in to such a fun world. The characters are well fleshed out and I cannot wait to meet them again in the rest of the series. I feel like this book laid a solid foundation for the rest of the series. I was left with lingering questions about some unresolved plot points, but that definitely isn't a deterrent. In Villian's and Virtues it was so satisfying to see how she neatly incorporated all the introduced plot points, so I am excited to see what she did with this series.

If you are looking for a cozy, slow burn series or are just a fan of A.K. Caggiano then I definitely recommend this series.

Paranormal fresh storyline and world building

The novel initially required patience, as it took me eight chapters to become fully engaged. However, once immersed, I found myself rapidly turning pages with enthusiasm. While the narrative occasionally became complex, this sense of disorientation effectively mirrored the protagonist's own experience of navigating an unfamiliar world and intricate social dynamics. The characters' individual journeys and the mysterious purpose of the Manors have piqued my curiosity, leaving me eager to explore the story's unfolding layers. (Rewritten by ai)

This book is alright, but Lorelei, the main character makes it feel boring.

Lorelei is a vapid human who accidentally stumbles into a magical hotel. She is fleeing her wedding, leaving her groom at the altar, because she’s just that bad at standing up for herself or having a conversation.

I needed something more to help convince me why Lorelei is there. The hotel chose her, so give us something! Make her particularly in tune with the hotel, or make her really good with magical beasts, or… anything. Anything at all. There’s just nothing to her. She’s just an exceptionally obtuse fish out of water.

Yes, this book is very magical, bringing the reader to be transported to a whole new world of magic. There was a real balance of darkness and realm of fantasy with lightness and humor. A. K. Caggiano brought the characters to life, as she penned this amazing story and created her characters. I was entranced by this story. The writing was fast-paced. This book is a real page-turner. You won’t want to put it down, so clear your schedule, get comfortable and settle in for a treat. I received a copy of this novel through BookFunnel. This is an honest review, and my own opinions.
