Richard Templar is known for his 'Rules By....' series of work and I imagine everyone can relate to something in each and every one he has released. This is more of your dip in, dip out book (in my opinion) where you get advice and guidance on things you can do and change to manage 'living well'.

It really is quite simple and straightforward when you think of it, from being more mindful, using relaxation, getting exercise and getting perspective and balance in your life but to be honest, sometimes you need the self help nudge to get you to be more open to seeing what's right in front of you. I've not read others in the series and I will certainly look for them in the future as if nothing else, it made me pause and think!

Well written, easy to understand and simple to navigate. Worth a read if this is your thing.

It was an easy read, but I found most of the rules quite obvious as I read through them. Nothing really felt eye-opening. However, from a few points made throughout the book, I got the impression that this was maybe the whole point ... to point out things that we all know make sense to do in order to live happier lives, but don't necessarily practise ourselves.

I like at the end how he advises to pick three rules to focus on initially and work from there. I think this is quite a manageable approach and an easier way to make some of those simple changes.

I was set on giving this book a 3 star rating, but the more I reflected and tried to understand Templar's main purpose, the more it actually made sense to me.

this was suchhh a hard book to start - I’m not sure why! I think it’s because, simply flicking through the pages, you know you have a lengthy way through of the same kinda thing.

The information is really great as reminders in life - there isn’t THAT much new that you wouldn’t already know. However, it has been really useful as reminders.

The end page is helpful, too. Noting down the ones that are the most relevant to your life to put into practise has worked well.

Overall, 3*.

100 ‘rules’ for different aspects of life, each on a 2 page spread. So each rule is a short homily or thought for the day. Some struck a chord and felt meaningful, some felt trite. This is inevitable with this sort of format. Overall the book felt uneven in quality, though I came away feeling that I’d been reminded of some valuable attitudes to life.

Worth the read? Yes and no

Positives - reminded me of the most important values that we shouldn’t lose sight of, some of the little anecdotes or stories were nice

Negatives - some rules were quite obvious

I have read previous books from this author. 5 books and 6 including this one. I was really disappointed in this book as the rules were so blatantly obvious that they didn’t need to be put into a book. I felt that the author has just written another book to keep on writing but it served no educational purposes and was frankly quite annoying and cringe worthy. It’s almost as if someone had typed into chat GPT, please give me 100 rules for living life that is on the fence and agrees with everyone’s opinion. There was no thought process to living well at all. Just many obvious and out of date examples of situations.

It felt like clichéd advice but that does not take away from the message of the book. It’s a pretty easy read not hard to comprehend. It took me 12 days to get through the book. I enjoyed the learning section and the challenge section had some solid advice especially the 96 and 97th rule. 3/5
