University of Aurora wasn’t my first choice to pursue my photography degree, nor was some random apartment with three bros my first choice for housing. Yet here I am, surrounded by mountains on campus and three hot, but annoying – and sometimes downright hateful - bros in Seth, Hunter, and Lucas at home.
I’m trying to ignore it all: the mess, the wild parties, and the fact that they pass the same woman between them like some kind of trophy. Yet as each day goes by, my hot, annoying, alpha-hole RoomHates are somehow turning into something that I can’t seem to resist.
With a penchant for a nice glass of red and a good steamy story, Carmen Black can usually be found either writing at her computer or snuggled under a blanket as she binges one of her favorite TV series. Either way, her four-legged fur babies, Crash and Chloe, are always by her side as she crafts wicked tales of unconventional love.
Now,I am always up for a good bully or enemy to lovers book but I have gotten up to 45% and I can't even force myself to skim, much less read any further. How did people give this 4 or 5 stars? They must be friends and family. Where do I start?? The first few pages of this book were okay but things rapidly went down hill....you know what? I can't waste too much more of my life in this book. Long story short - they had no reason to hate her, no reason to call her psycho, and it is impossible to live as nasty as those boys were living. How did they even get women to stay long enough to walk through that filthy place then have sex in those nasty rooms??? And Rachel...what makes her even attempt to race or do pushups with these nasty boys? What were they gonna do it she refused??? Just save you set some time and don't try to reason any of this out. I just know I will NOT be reading any more of her books.
First, please have someone proofread before publishing. There were complete paragraphs that made absolutely no sense. Characters were mixed up, words left out, and sentences that repeated in the middle of the sentence. Toward the end there were so many grammatical errors you had to guess at what was meant. The story line was weird. Why would the MC agree to do any of what was demanded? She didn’t even know them, so agreeing made no sense at all. Two stars because you actually wrote a book and it didn’t bore me to tears (frustrated because of grammar) and it made me laugh.
All three of the men in this book seem to have been raised to treat women like shit. Utter shit. They are rude and call her names and not in the angsty I want to F her but I am going to be rude way... they treat her like a maid. Why? Oh because she has a vagina! Then their friends touch her and their F buddies spill their drinks on her. Seriously? This isn't cute. Her reaction? To CRY! Hard pass for me.
Yikes, I made it through but barely. The characters are so immature and super rude and obnoxious. Rachel had zero backbone which was frustrating. You almost get raped and you have nothing to say to the guy besides thanks for the couch? Everything was just over the top and weird. Lots and lots of editing issues. Rachel and Seth's relationship developed ok but the rest were thrown together and not developed. The sex scenes individual were fine the one group, not so much. Rachel's personality flip flopped as well. She was a pushover and let everything just happen then for two seconds she would actually do something assertive (which the boys liked) than back to a jellyfish. I give the book a 2.5.
Rachel is accepted late into a university of Aurora - she’s and art major at a sports school, and ends up renting an apartment from 3 jers/guys. The guys are pretty mean to her at first, until they start realizing there may be more to her. I totally loved the mop/tv scene and seeing Rachel stand up for herself. I got this story as a freebie. The story pulled me in, and there are 2 more books out with book four releasing in a few days - so glad I have a new series to glom :) Willd definitely be following this author.
Rachel went to a university in Colorado because she wasn't able to get in the uni that she wanted. She ends up living with 4 guys who start calling her names and mistreat her for no reason at all. Moreover, they live in an apartment that they keep nasty and force Rachel to clean.
I felt like a lot of the elements of the story were thrown together just to add something to the story but not linking them correctly. I'm going to give book 2 a try to see if the story improves.
⚠️Trigger Warning: there is a scene of attempted sexual assault.⚠️
In this college roommates enemies to lovers book, I never quite understood why the guys are so terrible to the female roommate, Rachel. Some of the pranks and other actions by the “bros” are just horrible! She certainly didn’t do anything to deserve this level of disrespect, anger or treatment. I know that some (immature) guys will pull on the girl’s pigtails to get her attention but this was bad. The only redeeming qualities the guys seem to have was their good looks and (maybe) bedroom skills. I have no idea why she would hook up with any of them, let alone all of them! The chemistry between Rachel and two of the three men is understandable and flames up pretty quickly. The sexy scenes are ok - all are one on one until the end when everyone gets together. The world building is good - the detailed description of the apartment conditions is spot on for how you would imagine three college jock roommates living. Overall, the story isn’t bad, but I have a real problem with how terrible Rachel is treated before the guys finally change their attitudes. I just can’t imagine any woman who would get together with jerks like this. As a first time reader for this author, I think she has a lot of potential for future books, but I just didn’t like this storyline.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Rachel arrives in Aurora, Colorado to start college. She was accepted late and missed out on getting in the dorms, so she ends up renting a house with three jocks- Seth the track star, Hunter the quarterback, and Lucas the rower.
The author was really good about the guys' POVs, in the sense that I really felt like I was inside the head of a chauvinistic college jock, however frustrating it was. The MMCs are seriously asses. The way they speak about and treat women is disgusting and reading their POVs was analogous to that.
Rachel was an okay-ish MC. She stood up for herself, kind of. But about 1/2 or 3/4 of the way through, she just completely changed. Which is fine, I guess, but there wasn't any growth or anything, she just... changed. The ending though... when I realized what was going on, I just decided I'd read enough.
But whatever, the biggest issue with this book was the editing. There were a few times where the author got the MMCs mixed up. There was one point where it seemed as if someone was having a conversation with themself because they "said" everything on that page. There were a lot of missing punctuation marks and run on sentences.
Needless to say, I will not be continuing this series. It wasn't the worst thing I read, but the way the MC was treated, I expected some sort of apology or groveling... anything really. But there wasn't. They decided they no longer wanted to treat her like shit, and she just went along with it because they are "hot" and because of her traitorous body. That with the poor editing and it's just not worth it.
This is only the second book I've read by this author. There dose seem to be a running them in them RH jerky guys who treat women like toilet paper the whole bully thing which isn't bad it's very popular the thing about this book and the previous one I think the guys get a free pass on there jerkish ways there forgiven way to fast and the girls are just sleazy although there is a really sleazy girl in this one whose name got renamed so much that she became that girl the sleazy, snobbish girl who everyone slept with but then became just a nasty mistake. And there is a scene were Rachel is put in a bad situation all because her ex bro roommate's couldn't share even if that's what they did with every other girl. Other then the free pass on bad behavior by the guys and that one scene were Rachel never should have been kicked out and two Rachel was very nieve in thinking things couldn't get bad just because Josh seemed like a nice guy what nice guy let's you stay with them then puts you on the couch should have been your clue to not stay also he should have gotten in way more trouble cause now he's just going to cause more trouble later on for Rachel and the guys there's know way that weasel just goes away. I also personally think Rachel and the guys made up way to quickly after what happened. These were my only issues other wise the story flowed well there was good character building and each of the guys alone could have stood on there own with a romance story they were complex and interesting once you got under all that layer of rude obnoxious bad behavior.
Now for the story itself Rachel who waited way to long to find out what she wanted to do in college ended up in Colorado at a sports college sharing a roommate situation with 3 guys Seth the runner, Lucas the rower, and Hunter the football player. There first meeting dosen't go well and then goes from bad to worse from stupid guy pranks to ridiculous challenges against Rachel and the guys its both funny and cring worthy the state of there living arrangement is just gross. But eventually she dose get a bit of revenge on them. So this is a good book glad to see there will be a second one since the book ended with a happy for now kinda feel and hopefully the guys will stay out of trouble while Rachael is on winter break in New York.
I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book via Booksprout and this is my honest review.
Unless you have a kink for abusive assholes then give this book a pass or do yourself a favour and skip to the halfway mark when it at least get tolerable (even then proceed with the knowledge that it doesn't ever get good).
Seriously.
I don't mind a bit of a cold/brusque attitude or eau de jerk but these guys were something else. The cruel treatment of Rachel; calling her a psycho bitch, assaulting her when she attempts to leave for a girls' night, waking her in the wee hours of the morning to cook breakfast, etc. are unwarranted and so over the top that it's hard to see any redeeming features in any of the "bros". Rachel talks a good game in her narration but acts like a pathetic doormat most of the time. While it wouldn't have been my cup of tea, had the story been better thought out, it wouldn't have made the possibility of a relationship between the group seem soo farfetched. There are ways to go from enemies to lovers that make logical sense without simply making the characters do an about-face.
At 25% I was ready to call it quits but then I read a review that said things got drastically better after the "turning point" so I stuck with it. They lied. The turning point comes around the half-way point and while the overt abusive asshole behaviour wans the story also flounders. The characters' personalities are wildly inconsistent, changing on a dime and their actions seem to have no motivation.
Aside from a horribly executed plot, this book was riddled with obvious spelling and grammatical errors that made one wonder if it was ever proof-read or if an accidental first draft got published.
The only reason it got two stars is because against all odds I finished it and generally only rate books I DNF as single star reads. I can't believe that there are more books in this series, I doubt very much that I will ever crack their proverbial spines.
This first time reading a book by Carmen Black. Whole story line, made me upset, that the girl, having found a horrible living place, along with 3 guys, who were totally A**H****, when she first came. Treating her, despicably, calling her names, when they hadnt attempted to get to know her. Student at college, in Photography! Noticed writer, had put wrong name in a part, of book. Dont anyone proofread these? This was dragged out, wondered where it was headed. I was upset, that treatment of her, by roomates continued, and they made her, clean up the nasty apt. Slobs, disrespecful to her, and I , when reading, upset, with her, for not standing up to them, and saying No! Like she was so pathetic, was horrible to see her character like this. All this book did was bring out negative emotions, in reading this story.
I rarely struggle to finish a book, but this one made me down right cringe at times. The guys (jocks) were written as beyond immature and by the time we see a different side to who they really may be the damage has been done by how bad they were in the beginning. I was left shaking my head at how any girl would want any of them let alone their female roommate. This author had a decent writing style and could do well with future books. For me the character development just took away from this book.
" Note Spoiler" : Trigger not noted in description of one small section with attempted sexual assault.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book pulled me in from the first page. The character of Rachel is well written that you feel everything she goes through. When she arrives at the apartment we meet Seth, Lucas and Hunter. We see things get crazy with them all as they make her clean up their mess. To also the change to the way the guys all see Rachel, from calling her a psycho to thinking she's cute and taking things further. With a few steamy scenes this book ends in such a great way.
CW (both book and review): attempted rape This is discussed at the end of the review, so it can be easily avoided.
This could have been a fun little enemies-to-lovers romp. It was billed as a bully romance, IIRC. Instead it was tedious and muddled, and the bully elements were extremely poorly done.
The sex was good! I like that we didn't just jump right into PIV or group scenes, but instead had a 19 year old woman (and 20-something men) be responsible about their sexual choices and still get each other off. That's why it's a 2-start instead of a 1-star, along with some burgeoning kink realisation (see below).
Now... let's jump into the bullshit, shall we?
Proof. your. shit. Get a beta reader. Hire an editor. Something. There's so much here that needs reworking, including the bane of my existence, pluralising apostrophes. The number of Chekhov's Guns that were left on the wall is unbelievable. Reading the summary of the second book, it looks like they're going to stay that way.
Pick a personality for your characters and stick to it. I liked the hints of the ways the guys liked their sex - that was a great way to potentially explore the discovery of kinks! yay! - and how Racheal stepped up to meet those needs. But it's also like Racheal is several characters mashed into one, even more than you'd expect a first-year college student to be as they figure out the person they are. The guys are notorious partiers and players, which means yeah, intoxicated sex. But not with Racheal! They'd never have sex with drunk girls! (There's both an internal monologue AND a discussion between two of the guys about it.) Except they do, all the time.
What the actual hell is going on with this contest bullshit? Was it meant to show some kind of transition between "roommates from hell" to "decent human beings"? Because it didn't work. It was pointless and stupid, and to have Racheal repeatedly go along with it... It was setting her up just to kick her over and over again. I suppose this is why it's a "bully romance" but it's forced, awkward, and just poorly executed.
--> CW for discussion of attempted rape as plot device <--
Having an attempted rape scene be the deus ex machina to resolve the conflict between Rachael and the guys is the unforgiveable sin of this book. It wasn't treated in any kind of meaningful, sensitive way. Racheal just gets over it, and there's a little footnote of a thought at the end of the book in which she says she's too scared to report it or mention it to literally anyone other than the guys.
At least that last part is accurate to the lived experiences of survivors, but holy shit, how many times do I have to scream it?
Umm.. this might be one of the worst books I have ever read. Scratch that.. it’s the worst because I don’t think I’ve ever rated a book 1 star, and yes, I read the entire thing.
I got the ebook from the publisher, and even though the book was released quite some time ago, I must’ve gotten the arc still, because I can get over some typos, but not the bad grammar, and this book was full of them, so it must be the un-proofed thing right?? Because I refuse to believe a book would be released in such condition.
So Rachel is a freshman, at a college that specializes in sports, yet she studies art, because it was the only place she could get into. Anyway she moves in with 3 guys and from day one they treat her worse than shit, FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON!!! How are we supposed to like these guys?? I’ve read bully romance before, but this one is just horrible. They make her clean their disgusting flat, make them breakfast, they don’t like said breakfast so they just throw it at her face and spill coffee on the floor and then say she should clean because it’s her fault. I mean what the actual f*ck. They make comments on how she’s not even hot because she doesn’t have big boobs, because women are only sexual objects for them.
She of course sleeps with them and they all have a foursome at the end and they live happily ever after.
Do yourself a favor and don’t waste any precious time on this book.

Grammar was some of the worst I have seen. over abundance of misspelled words, missing words, inaccurate punctuation, overuse of italics, etc.
Forced lust/hate relationship. Both came out of absolute nowhere and made NO sense.
The humor was gawd-awful. Something an elementary grade child would enjoy but not an adult.
Conversations were confusing at times. They would have arguments that had no relevance to them whatsoever. “If you didn’t want us in here, then why didn’t you lock your door?” “Because you assholes were throwing food all over the apartment I just cleaned!”… huh? How does that argument compute?
Scenarios were unrealistic. Hazing is done in sororities and fraternities, not between roommates for no reason.
The men were so disgustingly misogynistic it is completely irredeemable. No confident, self respecting woman would have willingly gone into a relationship with them.
I want to give an honest review. I had a hard time with RoomHates. I am trying to decide if I want to read book two to find out where the characters stories go but I am on the fence about it. I liked most of the book but I just could not get behind why the men hated their new roommate from the start and they would not reason with themselves I why she was having a hard time with them and when they did they would jump back and forth. Its not a horrible storyline I felt like some parts were glossed over that could have been added for character or relationship development and maybe it will be on book two.
As info there is a TW of assault with hints of going to SA (does not completely go there) just keep that in mind if you have TW.
The men are aholes thats for sure but you can see where the author could taken they to improve them overtime which is what has me thing I might read book two to see if they improve overall.
This was the first book I read by this author and part way through I was struggling to continue. I can normally handle bullying in a book, but what was happening here was way to much. How Rachel managed to put up with the "bro's" and stayed in that house is beyond me. What they put her through was just terrible and they really did not deserve a second chance. Betting her on things they knew she wouldn't be able to beat them at just to prove a point and get her to do chores around the house because they were lazy and felt they were better than her was just wrong. However, I did manage to make it through and finish the book. The ending could potentially be a trigger for anyone sensitive to attempted sexual assault, but it also ends setting up a sequel. Overall, I'm glad I finished the book even though I did struggle through most of it.
she did nothing to deserve their hat rested and they didn’t grovel or anything they barely even talked about their disgusting treatment of her.
They bettled her, sexualaized her and used her. One things for sure she did show a little backbone so two stars for rachel.
Seth was a asshole and a bully
Hunter and lucas were followers so even worse
I don’t see any reason for her to like any of these men, sure she can be attracted but to like them? yea no
They didn’t do anything extremely wrong per say as in this isn’t dark it’s pretty low angst. As i said they sezualized her and bettled her which is wrong however she showed backbone so yk. they did force her to clean their disgusting ass house and force her to make breakfast, not the worst but those scences pissed me off.
This was a bully, sports romance with RH. I get that the author wanted to make it enemies to lovers, but there were no real reason for the boys to hate Rachel (or I guess be as horrible as they were) so much. The beginning really was what made the rating low for me, which is a shame because once the minor character development started, the plot became more interesting.
But again…we were all here for the spice so does the plot really matter?? Just kidding….kind of
The spice scenes were good, not extraordinary but my cringe radar didn’t go off so I guess that’s a good sign! My favorite has to be the shower scene, that was quite something ooof
If you want to read a short but spicy romance, with little plot but still entertaining, Roomhates could be a for you. Check for trigger warnings first though!
I couldn’t even finish half of it. I enjoy bully romances but the three of them teaming up on her just pissed me off. They corner her into doing athletic challenges to see who will clean their (probably mold covered) disgusting apartment.
ONE OF THE GUYS SAYS HES NEVER CLEANED HIS ROOM EVER IN THE HOWEVER MANY YEARS HE HAS BEEN LIVING THERE!!!
They throw their food at her, have people over and then when she tries to go out some stranger comes picks her up and puts her in the kitchen to clean. Then some chick that they are all banging throws a drink on her!
They only start listening when she is about to smash their tv with a broom.
The bulling that they did wasn’t like a playful banter I was literally getting anxious just reading it because there is basically nothing she can do.
Not even one star

I really enjoyed reading RoomHates(Life in the Brohouse Book 1)!!!! All about Rachel who is nineteen a college freshman studying Photography & Seth who is mid-twenties a runner and her roommate, Lucas who is in his mid-twenties is a Rower and her roommate & Hunter who is in his mid-twenties is the Quarterback k on the football team and her roommate. She’s never met any of these guys, she enrolled late to the University of Aurora which is in Colorado, and had to take the last room that was available. All the guys are athletes, and she is an Art major, they don’t actually get along! Read about Rachel & her roommates, and see how nasty situations can always be turned around. Lots of emotions and lots of toe curling occurs. Can’t wait to read book two!!!! Definite Read!!!!
Rachel is an artist. Rachel is going to the University of Aurora. It wasn't her first chose but she'll make it work for her. On the first she got there Lucas ran into her with his kayak polls and Hunter was just rude about it. Seth wasn't much help and treated her like she was the devil walking. Rachel couldn't believe the mess that they were living in. So Rachel called a roommate meeting will she regretted it as soon as she lost the bet. Things kept on going up and down for Rachel until then things turn for the better when hormones get in the way. I enjoyed reading this book. I loved the storyline and plot. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
Where to begin with this review? This is the first time I have read a book from this Author but since it was listed as Bully RH, I decided to give it a try. It begins actually okay but I would not say that the "bully romance" works well with this story. It just makes the FMC look like an idiot and made no sense. There was absolutely no reason for the behaviour or why she would even contemplate "competing" with college athletes who earned their places by being at top athletic condition. She could have just refused.
The story does pick up half way through and the characters and storyline develops. It actually tackles far more than a bully reverse harem and touches on very serious topics. That said that there should have been trigger warnings for those who do not want to read about date rape, self medication through drugs and alcohol. It also touches on college coaches who prefer to medicate their players instead of letting them recover from injury.
I am hoping that the second book is much better because it leaves too many threads unresolved and left me as the reader very disappointed. I've committed to review the next book, so I am hoping that it picks up. This was 2.5 out of 5 stars for me on this one.

At one point I was close to DNFing this book but because I have an arc for the third book I pushed on. I’m glad I did. The last 40% is a lot more palatable to me. That was when the bros finally started acting human. I couldn’t understand where all their nastiness stemmed from. Rachel had barely met them when they christened her “psycho” roommate. They were total jerks at the beginning but it was the scene where they had friends over that made me so angry. To treat someone so callously was so disrespectful and downright cruel. At least Rachel developed a backbone after that incident. I’m hoping that the next book will continue in this way and not resort back to needless nastiness.
