A brand-new series that expands deeper into the world of V. E. Schwab’s critically acclaimed novels Vicious and Vengeful.
Set in the years between Vicious and Vengeful, ExtraOrdinary follows a teenage girl named Charlotte Tills who survives a bus crash and becomes EO – ExtraOrdinary – gaining the ability to see people’s deaths in reflective surfaces.
This issue 0 leads into an all-new 4-part comic series!
VICTORIA “V. E.” SCHWAB is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of more than twenty books, including the acclaimed Shades universe, the Villains series, the City of Ghosts series, Gallant, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and The Fragile Threads of Power. When not haunting Paris streets or trudging up English hillsides, she can usually be found in Edinburgh, Scotland, tucked in the corner of a coffee shop, dreaming up monsters.
Ugh, I love Schwab. I’ll read anything her hand touches. But this is was…subpar at best. I hated the art style and the plot was way too fast. You can only read this if you’ve read Vicious. Which alienates a greater audience. I just didn’t care. It’s not bad per say. But it isn’t good enough to continue.
Since I posted my pre-review on this version I'm writing my overall review on the entire comic books on this one too.
If you are a fan of the Vicious novels and the EO universe these comic books are a must.
The story was very interesting and captivating, they read as if you're reading a Marvel or DC comics, the drawing style was amazing and most importantly you'll get to see one or two of your favorite characters from the novels. The writing style was easy, without there being too long dialogues.
And I wouldn't have minded of there were more to the comics.
Estoy enganchada. La historia es muy intrigante y el estilo de dibujo es peculiar y me encanta. Vicious es uno de mis libros favoritos, así que estaba esperando esta novela gráfica.
This was so good! Such an amazing start to this comic series, it will definitely leave you wanting more!
The artwork is incredible and the dialogue/plot line is intriguing and captivating. We follow Charlotte just as she has a near death experience and suddenly realises something about her is different.
Absolutely cannot wait to see where the rest of this comic series goes!
I won't complain though. Any and all Vicious content is better than everything else I like combined. <3
There's 4 more in the series!!!
And as much as I'd like to have them with me RIGHT NOW, I'm willing to wait for V.E. Schwab. She can take as long as she wants, and I'll sit here patiently like the polite and obedient child my parents always wanted me to be, as long as I see a promise of more EO content 🙂
The cover art was incredible and promising, and I'm excited for what we get to see with Charlotte! I think that's such an incredible play on EO abilities, and I'm eager to see how she handles "meeting" her death (whom those who've read the books, know and understand to be Eli). It's really the story content that provides a higher rating, even though there isn't much here. But it's setting the stage for the future issues, so that's neat! I just think the inside art style is..less than pleasant and doesn't entirely fit the atmosphere or severity of the book series.
Which, I know transferring media is another thing entirely, and can't be exact obviously, but I think we all had something a little different in our minds when we expected the comics.
The Art Style is lovely and suits the story well but…
this are just 20ish pages. There is no room for a plot or anything else. It felt like a prologue and that’s it. I will read the following novels but this was a bit disappointing. I had hoped for more. And it only made sense if you read vicious.
My first ever graphic novel (if I can call it that bc it was quite short) and I loved it. I LOVE the Villains universe so I’m excited to jump back into it!
I have not read many graphic novels, so I don’t have much to compare this to, however I absolutely loved it. I felt like it was an amazing side story to the main books in the Villains series.
Charlotte Tills is an ordinary high school student until the day she is in a bus crash and becomes an ExtraOrdinary. She soon discovers she has a power that can only be described as creepy.
I read this chronologically between Vicious and Vengeful and I found it was a nice break between the books. We get a glimpse into what has happened to Eli and a new perspective for becoming and living as an ExtraOrdinary.
The books in the series examine good versus evil with a bit of a deep dive into morally grey waters. While the Vicious and Vengeful look into the morality of characters, ExtraOrdinary looks into how powers can be used for good or evil. I absolutely adored this and I am hopeful that we will get another graphic novel to go with this series.
I saw the name of the author and the art style on the cover of a special edition (a dreamy, watercolour-y style) and bought this graphic novel on a whim. This book and the rest of its series are set in between Vicious and Vengeful by VE Schwab. And I don’t know if being a fan that series would make you like this graphic novel more or like it less…
Because this story did the characters from Vicious pretty dirty. The plot and the dialogue had no chill; there were no levels, everything was at maximum, super unsubtle the whole time. Which just isn’t a sentence I thought I would say about something VE Schwab wrote? And the art style wasn’t what I was expecting based on the cover I bought—it had a more classic superhero comic style, which is a style that I don’t associate with VE Schwab’s vibe and overall felt really incongruous with what I had imagined.
But results may vary. If you want to get back in this world and like this art style, this graphic novel is for you.
This was really, really good. I loved the way Eli and Victor were incorporated in the story, and the art was very stylistic in a comic book sort of way.
