In every private investigation, there are rules and limitations-when a child's life is on the line, all may be broken.
Payden Beck has been a police officer, a police detective, and a private investigator. Now, after a lifetime of combatting crime, he's ready to stop fighting.
When a young girl named Chloe-kin to his greatest adversary-tries to hire him, he gives her the sad news. But, when Chloe makes her plight clear, Payden knows he must take her case, even if it means confronting a police force on the take, the Spanish Mafia, and, perhaps worst of all, Chloe's family.
With life and death at stake, defeat is not an option; only sacrifice.

Dormir is a crime mystery about a private investigation conducted by Payden Beck, a police officer hired to find Bill Dooley’s missing niece. He initially refuses as he is tired of all the brutality and harshness of the business; however, when the 13-year-old Chloe shows up, things change for him. The case is not easy, and Payden knows that it isn’t going to end well, but he still tries his best. The drama begins with the Spanish Mafia, police corruption and the usual back and forth action scenes you expect for such a thriller. I have read other books from this author, so I was familiar with his writing. I was expecting the same quality, and the author did not disappoint.
I particularly enjoyed Payden’s character. His relationship with Chloe was heartfelt and enriched the story. The literature was written well and was action-packed.

I was excited to see Golvach’s contemporary crime novel, “Dormir,” pop up on Reader’s Favorite review list; doubly so when I saw Payden Beck (he of “10-30” fame; the novel that introduced Payden to a worldwide audience) was the lead character. I’ve read several novels and stories by this multi-award-winning author and none have disappointed—au contraire. Golvach digs deeply into his character's psyche to bring out those traits of good and bad that everyone carries within. Payden isn’t an angel, far from it, but like most people he overcomes his inner devils with an innate sense of right and wrong, a strong belief that victory over evil requires fighting fire with fire, no holds barred where self-sacrifice is a given. “Dormir” is a faced paced crime thriller and at the same time an innocently pure love story between an old man and a thirteen-year-old girl much wiser than her age. Few novels can create the strong emotional response that brings tears to my eyes, Michael Golvach has written a story that did and this isn’t the first time he’s done it. I first “met” Michael through his short story horror collection, “Bloody Gullets,” a fascinating psychological and bloody horror feast. He surprised with his crime thrillers and impressed me with his versatility in crossing genres while always working in an emotionally charged undercurrent. I can’t wait for his next surprise.
I was happy to read this latest Payden Beck crime noir novel. Interestingly enough, it is about the end of Beck's colorful career as a police officer turned police detective and finally private investigator. If you have not yet read "10-30" about the beginning of Beck's career, I recommend that one first, so you'll have a better idea of the references to his past which appear in this book. Michael Golvach is planning to write several books that tell the stories in between, which I am looking forward to. All that said, this novel does stand alone as a complete story. At the center is the unlikely friendship between Beck, an aging, hardened detective, and Chloe, a precocious young teen. He helps her when her safety is threatened by her family while she leads him to sexual predators, whom he has a moral vendetta against. This is a fast-paced, action-packed story where the corrupt characters outnumber the good people, but even the good ones are far from saintly. It has some surprises and mystery that will keep you entertained and guessing until the end.
