A Fort of Thorns

Rate this book
A Fort of Thorns is the sixth rousing episode of Jason Born’s celebrated Long Fuse series. Empires clash as the French and Indian War rages throughout the virgin forests of North America. 1757 A.D. After the humiliating defeat and brutal massacre at Fort William Henry, Ephraim Weber has returned to scout and kill for the famed rangers commanded by Robert Rogers. Over the ice of Lake George and atop the snows of Iroquoia, they relentlessly engage the French outpost at Ticonderoga, probing for weakness. And when he and his band discover their best chance yet for swift victory in the bloody conflict, they are surprised to find tremendous support from the highest reaches of the rigid kingdom. Resources and men are assembled by a new, competent general. The largest army ever fielded in the Western Hemisphere soon grinds its way toward General Montcalm and his lean garrison. Will the resurgent British finally reverse the fateful trend in the course of the war? Or, will a lowly Canadian ensign prove to be their undoing? A stirring tale of war and its echoing consequences, A Fort of Thorns propels the reader into the flawed hearts and minds of men. Explosive personalities command attention, setting the stage for triumph or tragedy. Amidst the death and destruction, the seeds of division are planted that will one day result in the blooming of a great nation.

Jason Born is a popular historical novelist of many series as well as stand-alone titles. His latest work, On Love & War, is an epic tale of devotion and pain in Napoleonic Europe. The Long Fuse is an ongoing series that thrillingly captures the violent period of America’s rise from ragtag colonies to independence. He is the author three other gritty series of works spanning time and place. Lions & Devils vividly describes the heroes and villains of the monstrous Islamic assault of Western Europe during the Eighth Century. The Norseman Chronicles center on the faithful Viking, Halldorr, who desired peace, but found only war in the Old and New Worlds. The Wald Chronicles describe the rugged conflict and improbable outcome in Germania during the wars between Rome and her tribal adversaries over 2,000 years ago. League of the Lost Fountain is his first work for kids of all ages. Jason lives in the Midwest with his wife and three children.

Jason Born keeps getting better and better. His characters are unforgettable... and always in the middle of the action.

The French and Indian War isn't over yet, so it's not too much to hope for at least one more sequel of Ephraim Weber's cockiness.

Thank you Jason! The Long Fuse series has been totally engrossing and great entertainment. Perhaps because I'm a Pennsylvanian, I love this period of our country's history. The characters are gripping and I found myself loving many and hating many more. At the end of Fort of Thorns my blood was boiling from the ignorance and arrogance of those dressed in red. Please don't leave us hanging too long while you complete Book #7. Best Regards, Michael.

Note-I'm so please you changed the cover style for this series.

Very Good, not Great

This volume was not quite up to the previous episodes in the series, but still very good. It was somewhat pedestrian with more emphasis on history than characters. Still a good read, and I look forward to the next volume. I do hope Mr. Born will return to Ephraim's personal conflicts in future books.

Early America

As with all the Ethan Webber series this novel is not only entertaining but educational. I hope that Mr. Born continues to lead us into the American Revolution with his character Ethan.

The latest in a great series

The latest installment of the long fuse series is just as amazing as the previous five. If you love historical fiction like I do, you won’t be able to put this book down once you start. I certainly hope number seven will soon follow

Great tale

Great story of a shameful incident. If only the British generals had been better soldiers, they could have ended the ear with much less loss of life.

Another fantastic book. Loved the imagery and, of course, Ephraim. And the little surprise ending....I will not post spoilers. True to form, this is no exception. The characters make history come alive and the dialog is great...sometimes funny, others serious...and in all the right places. But through all of it, you get a feel for what it may have been like to stand in their shoes and see what they saw. Looking forward to the next in the series.
