How to look after your puppy is a book that would be enjoyed by a younger audience. If you are looking for a book for your child when preparing for a new pup, this would be a decent option.

This was HORRIBLE. Much of the advice given here is WRONG. Let's list the highlights:

* The book states that your first dog should be a puppy. This is like telling a small child that the best way to swim is to be dropped into the middle of the Atlantic. Dogs have outgrown many puppy problems like teething, toilet accidents and constantly jumping on people.
* The book states that purebred dogs make better pets than mongrels because they are more predictable. Are you kidding me? Shelters are filled with purebreds that grew too big, weren't the right color, didn't behave as expected or had major health issues that breeders or the AKC don't like to publicize. Shelters work hard to know the strengths and weaknesses of each dog -- pedigreed or not. A pedigree brings nothing to the table, since they can be faked. Buying a purebred dog means you are a total idiot, when you can spend a fraction of the money and save a life.
* The book advocates paper training, which has for decades been proven to NOT FUCKING WORK.
* The book states you need vinegar to clean urine stains. Vinegar will encourage your canine to keep urinating at that area.
* The book states the wrong way to teach a dog or pup to sit. Forcing a dog or pup to sit does more harm than good. All you need to do is hold the food dish over their heads. They sit while following the dish. Immediately praise and treat.

Also, a poor choice of fonts make this book very difficult to read. Illustrations that spread over two pages were greatly marred by the crease between the two pages. Personally, I don't like the illustrations, even when I could see them, as they were scribbly, dull and too uniform.

The only good place for this book is in the recycling bin.

Es un libro muy sencillo con detalles que te ayudarán, de manera general, como criar a tu perrito.
Lo leí cada que iba al aeropuerto y extrañamente seguía en la sala de lectura, por eso me tardé tanto.

Appealing digital illustrations accompany basic information and advice about pet care. Readers will learn how to choose the right puppy for them as well as how to prepare their home for the puppy. Tips about how to feed, train, and care for a new furry friend are provided in the book. Readers will even learn about how to groom and play with a puppy as well as how to pick one up carefully and the special care needed for a pregnant dog. The mother-to-be will need special dog food, for instance. Youngsters contemplating adding a dog to their family need to read this book first.

This is a terrific book for anyone considering getting a puppy. I picture a parent going through the book with their child as they take all aspects of pet ownership into consideration. It includes how the dog would work out in your home situation, how to train, how to play and so much more. Terminology is explained and even what happens at the end of a dog's life is discussed. I will be recommending it.

Not being a dog owner myself, I thought this was a simple but informative little book. I enjoyed the format - two page chapters with short paragraphs about different subtopics. I'm on the fence about the illustrations. They don't do much for me, and I can see kids dismissing this book because it doesn't have photographs. It's a great introduction, though, to taking care of your first dog.
