Midlife Shifters #2

Midlife Harem

Rate this book
She thought she was going into menopause,
but actually she was turning into a bear. A bear in heat.

This is the second book in the Midlife Shifters series.

When life falls apart, you go home.
I just didn’t realize what a mess home would be too.
My father is losing his memory,
And a sexy young farmhand is taking care of him.
One burly young stud I can’t seem to resist.

I tried to runaway and ignore my hormonal urges,
But then that landed me in the second man’s bed.
He’s a grizzly and wild carpenter who knows how to use his hands.
At least this one is age-appropriate.

Then there’s the dark man who’s trying to steal my father’s farm.
Whoops, yeah. I slept with him too. And invited danger right through the door.
And all of these men tell me I’m their omega.
What does that even mean?
And what happens when they all find out about the baby in my womb?

I thought I would love this

I liked the first book in this series so I had figured I would like this one. Unfortunately I stopped reading at 75%. The first half of the book was nice. Unfortunately after she escapes a kidnapping situation where one of the men slap and hit her in anger, she immediately lets him around the house and continues to sleep with him with no conversation or understanding that hitting your partner is not okay and is abusive. She also goes from being angry at the other men in one chapter to the very next sleeping with all of them and talking about love with out resolution of any kind.

Captivating storyline with a couple of twists to tease your imagination. When Kellye arrives home she doesn’t expect her father’s health to be deteriorating so rapidly. Her initial meetings with Scott and Carl are both positive but not so the arrival of Jim. The pressure Kellye is put under shows what a strong person she is to be able to manage the situation, but when danger threatens, all three of these men will protect her with their lives. I enjoyed this book.

So many things wrong..

I’ve read shifter books before, I was prepared for the unbelievable. I was ready for the ridiculousness that exists in some shifter stories. I wasn’t ready for how this story started off extremely slow and boring. I kept reading (shame on me), I wrongly thought it would get better. Here’s where things went south…

**SPOILERS**
Kellye comes home not to check on her father who she’s been estranged and hasn’t lived with since she was a young girl, but because she feel like she is going through pre-menopausal. She gets to her dads farm and finds him suffering from rapidly advancing dementia. Working with her dad is Scott, a hot college student helping out on the farm. Overcome with horniness, she sexes with Scott. In town the very next day, she meets Carl who makes furniture. They go on a date and once again overcome with horniness, she sexes Carl. Next, the farm is being threatened by bad guys.. namely Jim, who wants the farm for nefarious reasons. Jim threatens Kellye and is a real butthole, but of course, Kellye thinks he’s hot too. Out of the blue, Jim kidnaps Kellye. Kellye feels she can use her feminine wiles on him, so she sexes him (after he slaps the shit out of her during the kipnapping). Sadly, I knew the dad was going to be offed some how in the book because he just didn’t fit in with the shifter daughter fourway that was happening.

This story moves incredibly slow, then incredibly fast. One night there’s a fight and Kellye is going to leave all three guys alone, then the next morning the three of them are in a four person throuple, so a fourple??? Wouldn’t have been so bad if the story was at least interesting or if the sex scenes were hot, but nooooo - the story is boring and the sex scenes are dry.

I just couldn't appreciate the story here

As someone who has dealt with a parent with dementia.... It's not easy to like her. Add to that at least one of the lovers talks to her and treats her like shit and she gets turned on by it?? Yeah..... No.

Confusing at times

There were points in the story where the characters would be in one location then suddenly magically appear in another. There were some points also where it seemed like the author had scenario in mind, would start the paragraph or chapter but get distracted and begun another without completing the scene. It caused a lot of confusion trying to keep up.
I thought the premise was interesting but the characters were not completely developed. I was debating between two or three stars only because I enjoyed the premises but all the factors place together and made me decide on giving it two.

It’s okay to hit a woman?

All right, I’ll get down to it. I would’ve liked this book better (the FMC was cool, feisty and relatable) if one of her harem members wasn’t abusive!!

**SPOILERS**

Kelleye leaves her highly successful independent interior design business to move back home and take care of her sick, aging, father. She has no idea that she’s actually only half human (on her father’s side), on her mother’s side she’s a bear shifter. She never shifted and no one ever told her that at 38 yrs old she’d be having “hot flashes,” and experiencing “heats.” She’s immediately drawn to, attracted to Scott the young farmhand who has been helping her father. Due to her father’s dementia (her father made some mistakes) she comes in contact with, and gets to know an arrogant, high-handed, nasty Alpha named Jim, and while browsing through town she hooks up with a wood maker /carver when she buys two chairs from him. Each of the three men make her delirious with lust, and she just can’t stop feeling hot and aroused when she’s with them. Scott finally reveals to her that she’s an Omega bear shifter and only feels aroused that way with her compatible mate. The bears imprint on one another. Kelleye takes this revelation in stride (actually it was really far fetched to believe that she SO EASILY accepted the revelation and situation) and honestly a point that annoyed me. For a highly intelligent career woman who knew nothing about shifters, didn’t know they existed, she actually was all, “no, no you’re wrong, you’re all crazy I’m not a bear shifter, that’s ridiculous,” for like all of four pages…she accepted the fact that she was an Omega bear shifter, and that the three men she had slept with (who turn out to be brothers *eye roll*) were her mates wasaaay too easily! It just wasn’t believable.

However I would’ve looked past that point if one member of her harem hadn’t kidnapped and “beat her up” before just stating he actually imprinted on her when he kidnapped her (or when they had hate sex - another issue I didn’t like). Alpha Jim is a grade A a-hole who from the second he met Kelleye to the “end” of the book is a violent, bad, mean, SEXIST, jerk!!! Seriously, I have read dozens upon dozens upon dozens of “these types of books” that have anti-heroes who have very loose moral compasses (that have been ENJOYABLE. But those books never had the guy/shifter/supernatural male main character STRIKE his mate/imprinted partner more than once by the way, and treat her like crap! Jim is an awful harem member. I get it, J.L. Wilder was giving her readers the “ultimate” ALPHA MALE, i.e. Arrogant den leader who is tall dark, handsome, seriously arrogant, high handed and likes kinky sex. The problem is she went too far with Jim’s character, and she also didn’t write in an story arc where Jim “redeems” himself. Actually the author gets Kelleye to ultimately AGREE with Jim, and accept EVERYTHING he has done to her, his family, and his den of bear shifters (who fled from him). Maybe the author thought Jim going “legit” in his business was him “redeeming” himself, but frankly that’s not redeeming, and not once does he apologize for hitting Kelleye when he kidnapped her!! Every awful thing Jim does to Kelleye is explained away, and the story ends neatly tied up with Kelleye happily married to her three men with three children and one on the way. Heck, Jim even wants just boys because he believes in the “traditional old ways,” and thinks boys are better because they’ll be warrior bears for the den, and the first born will be head Alpha after him. Just how sexist can you get? And Kelleye thinks this is “cute.” That how he thinks and behaves is just fine, because that’s “just what bear shifter Alpha’s do, and how they are? *major eye roll, here* Gross. Frankly, Jim was an awful harem member. He was set up as the anti-hero, but turned out to be much more of a villain than hero, or lovable Alpha. I wouldn’t have minded his arrogance that much, many books with these tropes, have arrogant Alpha’s; some do kidnap their mates, or hold them for ransom, or take them as payment for a debt. etc. but the fact that he does that AND hits her, and is a sexist jerk only makes him incredibly unlikeable and thoroughly un-redeemable!! Heck he doesn’t apologize for anything, and actually still thinks he’s right, oh maybe he has to go legit for the babies and mate, but hey, that means it cancels out everything horrible he ever did.

So yup, I was really, really disappointed that a book with a cool FMC, and a solid plot line could give the heroine such an awful harem member.

The second story in this Midlife Shifters series is a reverse harem about Kellye who sold her interior designer business to return home to Bent River to take care of her father, Marvin, with dementia. When Kellye arrives, she meets Scott who is staying in a camper on the farm and helps out. Scott is a young man finishing his last year in college which starts Kellye's libido. Kellye asks Scott, how long her father was in this condition and Scott lets out that she's a Omega. This begins Kellye finding out the truth about herself and what is going on around the farm. She meets Jim who's trying to buy the land that her father promised to sign over and later Carl who runs a hand made furniture store who she buys some rocking chairs for the farm. When they "all" call her Omega and imprint on her after mating, could they really be shifters? This is a well written story with twist and turns and interesting characters with steamy chemistry that I volunteer to review this enjoyable read via Booksprout.

Midlife crisis? Early menopause? Something weird is happening to her?
Kellye has to leave her very successful design business back east to come home and take care of her father who has dementia. The farm has become run down and is very outdate, so while taking care of him she make plans to renovate. And everything the young man helping with the farm comes near her she gets the hots for him. And also the man who make beautiful furniture. What is wrong with her? When a man shows up demanding that she or her father sign papers selling the farm to him, she refuses and continually refuses each time he comes by. But he’s involved with drug traffickers and if they don’t get what they want she and her father are in danger. Can the two new men in her life help her? And why do they keep calling her an Omega? As with all of this are authors work, you’ll enjoy the versatility of the characters of the story, with Kellye, Jim, Carl and Jack. Kellye has no idea that she is a bear shifter but feels that she is heading into menopause when she returns to her family’s farm in Oregon. Jim is the Alpha of his clan which is basically disbanded because they have all gone ways of the human jobs. Kellye starts a relationship with each of these three men not knowing that they are brothers, they have mischief that they need to deal with and eventually come out with HEA and a family unit together.

Kellye quit her job and moved back to the town she was born. Her Dad has dementia and it’s worst than she thought. He has a sexy farm hand helping him around the farm. Her hormones are going crazy and she’s sure she will be going thru menopause any minute now. She’s having a hard time controlling herself around every guy she runs into. Everyone keeps calling her an Omega. What does that mean? The characters are all very different but seem to have great chemistry with Kellye. This story has danger, lots of romance, and surprises. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Midlife Harem by J.L. Wilder. Book 2 in Midlife Shifters series.
Kellye returned home due to her father’s ailing health as she needs to take care of him. Where she meets three different men. Thinks she is going into menopause, in reality she is an omega bear shifter. The men turned out to be brothers and claim she is an omega. This book is well written, with strong characters with intense chemistry. It has danger and drama. I enjoyed this book. As always J.L has delivered a great addition to this series. Eagerly awaiting the next book.

This was an very well-written older female, Reverse Harem, Bear Shifter Romance Story by one of my favorite authors. This book 2 in The Midlife Shifters Book Series was intriguing and had very well-thought out scenes and story. These characters have strong personalities and their interactions are realistic. This entertaining story has the following: intrigue, twists, turns, adventure, action, love, steam and a HEA. It is a wll-paced book that will keep you engaged from start to finish.
She thought she was going into menopause, but actually she was turning into a bear. A bear in heat.

This is an enjoyable read. Full of twists and turns. Threats and pain. Conflict and resolution.
The characters are nicely written with good detail and encompassing plot.
Kellye had returned home to look after her father. There she meets Scott, the attraction is instant though Kellye thinks it is her menopause playing up. Then she meets Jim, she hates what he is doing to her family but the feelings are intense. When she runs into Carl she is overwhelmed with lust. Her hormones are playing tricks on her.
A fun read with interesting characters and an engaging plot.
I definitely recommend this book.

Kelley and her 3 bears

Kelley had come back home to help take care of her father who had dementia. She had no idea it was as bad as it was.
Kelley also thought she was going through the beginning stages of menopause due to the hot flashes.
Kelley meets 3 men at different times on the ranch. Some meetings were pleasant and some not so much. But the bad part was she had to have sex with all three, she could not stop herself !
This is the story of Kelley and her 3 bears and the adventure she takes going home. They do have an HEA but I am not ruining it.
Enjoy the book and make a pot of coffee, you will need it to stay awake ! Great story and well told.
Enjoy !

Kellye decides to move back home only to discover her father was sicker than she had realized and a farm hand has been taking care of him. She also thinks she is going into menopause but in truth she is a bear shifter and in heat. She is attracted to the farm hand and things get steamy between them. She then meets a sexy grizzly shifter and spends time in his bed. The man who wants her father’s farm is also lurking and she falls for him as well. They tell her she is their Omega but will she run again? Fast-paced shifter read with loads of drama and lots of sizzling heat. I liked it.

Love where you expect it least

I give this story line 4 stars but I must give 2 stars for editing. There were so many misspelled words that I was about to put the story down and walk away every time (too many times) and one whole chapter that seems to be missing were it jumped from ... well you'll know it when you get there.. about 3/4 of the way thru.
That being said the live story that evolves is awesome as well as the love of the guys fir her dad. Grabs you in and pulls you along. Go read.. and stay thru the bad edits to a lovely HEA

I loved reading this book. There was a woman who came home to take care of her father. She meets three different men and starts having a lot of reactions to each of them. She believed she was going through menopause. Kellye keeps being called omega by the three guys. One of the guys is helping Kellye's dad out on the farm. One makes beautiful furniture and the other is alpha of a defunct clan because he works with drug lords. What happens next is great. It is full of action and unexpected information about the three men. Thank you. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of the book.

Nice Read!

I enjoyed reading this book about Kellye and her men! She definitely had a lot of chemistry going around with three different men! To find out there was a connection between all of the men was a big shocker to me!!! I loved how she hung in there to protect her ailing father. Most people would send a parent away to some medical facility, but not Kellye! She was right there with him until the end! I do believe people will enjoy this read! I definitely recommend it!

Very enjoyable and interesting read and a great addition to the series. I really liked Kellye even with all the pressure and obstacles thrown her way she managed to show us how strong and resilient she is. Then again she had three hot mens willing to protect her with their lives. Overall a enjoyable and entertaining read. I received a free copy via Booksprout as always my reviews are totally voluntarily and no monetary compensation was received and the opinions I have expressed are my own.

This is the second book in the Midlife Shifters and absolutely amazing! Kellye sold her business and moved home to take care of her ailing father. There she meets three hunky bear shifters and finds out she’s a shifter too. This book is filled with secrets, twists and turns, drama, and plenty of chemistry. A great read and one I enjoyed immensely. Highly recommend.

Kellye is a bear shifter who had to move back home to help her sick father. Carl, Jim and Scott are all bear shifter each very different and all brothers. Kellye meets each separately and sparks fly with each. But what will happen when they find out they all are fated to Kellye? What will happen when they discover Kellye's father kept a little secret from Kellye all her life? Will there be a HEA?

Midlife Harem, Midlife Shifters, book 2.

Kellye is a thirty something interior designer that has sold her business to return to care for her ailing father, who has been diagnosed with dementia.
On her return to her father's farm she discovers that she is in fact, a half breed omega bear shifter, her mother who died in a vehicle accident when she was very young, her father being human.
An enjoyable read.

Midlife Harem

A story that has a lot going on. There's mostly good. So starting with what made no sense is the FMC was born there and left at 12 more than old enough to have garnered a few friends in a town the size it is. That being said the good far outweighed that. The dealing with a parent with dementia and its stages broke my heart. The bad boy redemption was definitely good. The bears coming back, the she didn't know she was an omega. Enjoyed it.

Nice Mixture of Paranormal and Reverse Harem

This story was not only very well-written but kept your attention with different scenarios involving the omega (who didn't know what she was) while meeting her soon to be harem candidates. The writing was imaginative yet kept the story fairly logical in this mythical paranormal world. The erotic scenarios were descriptive, imaginative, and pleasing to my senses. Enjoy!

An excellent story with both excitement and emotionalism, I am loving this series with older couples finding love. This story deals realistically with Alzheimer's and how it affects families, which I appreciate since I've had family members suffer through it. I enjoyed the story with all of the build-up, giving us more story detail with each chapter. I didn't like Jim for most of the book, although he redeemed himself some later. I'm looking forward to more books in the series.

I've read a lot of reverse harem books and this one was not one of the best in my opinion. We never get the viewpoint of the MC's mates and it left me feeling disconnected to them as characters. Also didn't like how she went from being threatened and scared of one of the men, and also being abused by him, to suddenly ok with him living with her. Yes he appears to redeem himself in the end, but as we never hear his "voice" it's hard to connect with his story.

It’s a sweet romantic story

This is a sweet romantic story with good characters. A young woman goes back home to care for an ailing father and she finds that she is different somehow. There are a couple of guys that make her feel things that she thought were dead. There is a little bit of angst, a couple of villains, and hot guys. There are a few slow spots, but other than that . . . . Read On!
