Always cute, but I was annoyed as the introduction of a new kaiju was dragged out, some artificial relationship drama was shoehorned in, and a really unwelcome homage to/rip-off of the dreadful and creepy First Love Monster, Vol. 1 was included.

Kuroe and Minami have been spending a lot of time apart lately and absence is not doing the thing. Plus, Kuroe was spotted as a kaiju by another older boy. Wait, did I say older? Hang on, because kaiju aren’t the only things growing out of proportion this volume.

Okay, first things first - this is the best that Kuroe’s mom has ever been. She hasn’t exactly been the most nuanced or tolerable character, but there’s a switch in that woman that simply hadn’t been flicked and when it is, hoo boy. Really turned her around.

Kuroe and Minami go through some stuff and even if the way that gets set up just made me audibly sigh out loud, the results are interesting just because it’s a neat juxtaposition to see Kuroe lashing out in her human form and when she clamps her hands to her mouth, trying to prevent another monstrous energy blast, what comes out instead proves just as devastating.

That is the story at its best - using the monster as a metaphor for teenage years and the perils of young love and acting out and being irrational. Naturally that’s almost of all of it in this volume.

Then Daichi shows up.

Daichi is the older guy who saw Kuroe transform, except he’s actually a very developed grade schooler who looks like he’s in college. You can read that again if you want. I’ll wait. I mean, at least the kaiju aren’t the least plausible thing in the story now.

Daichi just wants a friend and is completely accepting of Kuroe as she is and knows her secret and the two of them bonding over MineDraft (cough) is pretty cute. But then Daichi keeps coming and a little of an adult body being utterly infantilized (sorry, grade schoolized, but it’s hard to tell the difference) goes a long way.

When Kuroe and Minami have it out, Daichi is there to make things even worse and it’s absolutely grating. They needed a lot less of this character - he doesn’t really work and manages that one scene of friendship and then should have gone gently into the night.

Of course, Minami is also surrounded by monsters and finds this one fact about Daichi to be an unbelievable bridge too far (I mean, I get it, same same, but in a story like this the characters should have some faith). End result, Minami doesn’t believe Kuroe, which frankly should excuse him from the inevitable reconciliation for being a boyfriend only when it’s convenient, but whatever.

Minami’s problem is that he is both naive and boring. This whole fame plot is so clearly wearing on him and he can’t see beyond trying to do something good for the monster, even as he is clearly accomplishing absolutely nothing. Hey, maybe if you paid attention to Kuroe she wouldn’t be off somewhere else, you dope?

It doesn’t help that the relationship between Kuroe and Minami is roughly as interesting as a fireworks festival dating a loaf of week-old bread. Kuro’s friends show up for brief cameos and also her sister is introduced, which is a thing on its own, and they are far more interesting than the romance side of it. If the book was more about the girls having Kuroe’s back it would have been better.

It’s just so frustrating - when this book is doing what it does well, it is pretty close to amazing and a really cute take on a romance manga. When it tries something this wacky combined with a fairly lame couple fight it’s just plodding along until the next monster battle.

3 stars, but hopefully it bounces back next time. Minami has been worked around before and I’m sure it can happen again, but too much of this volume misses the mark for me.

2.5*

There's a carrot dangling in front of us of plot development and instead we got an elementary boy who looks like a university student being bullied into buy adult books by his ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CLASSMATES WHO SHOULDN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT IT IS AT THAT AGE WTF. (thank god he just got a regular manga with a girl in a swimsuit on the cover)

And then our 17years old Kuroe goes to his house while he's alone, without his parent's permission to play minecraft with him?!? 💀 And the dad is just ok with it when he comes home. ugh
(prolly a ref to that one agegap shojo who got an anime and was creepy af, I guess because the fmc looks similar to Kuroe they thought it would be a good idea?)

And there's TWO stupid misunderstandings, it's really the least creative way to create turmoil in Kuroe so she can do what the plot wants her to do but whatever.

I have other nitpicky issues with this volume. Overall I'll still continue reading it because Im still invested in the story but man does the writing needs to get better. Most of the volumes so far come off as full of filler to stretch the plot because the storyline can probably be solved way faster than the number of volumes this story is gonna have.

"they're fighting because of a misunderstanding that should be easy to clear up!" is one of my least favorite tropes in romances so i was kinda dreading this one, but fortunately it didn't really focus on that at all, it was just an excuse for everyone to have feelings and for minami-kun to be a being made completely out of boyfriend material.

I’ve thought this since volume 3 but I hadn’t wanted to say it— this manga gives me similar vibes to Komi-san Can’t Communicate. Kuroe-chan struggles to communicate with others due to her stand-off-ish nature due to personal reasons, yet her heart yearns for more human connections. She gains a colorful cast of companions as the series goes on, her first and one of her most dear friends being her boyfriend (though that particular development happens much more quickly in this series than in Komi-san). Speaking of friends, we’ve added yet another colorful one to the group, the one whom we had thought was going to be a love rival for Minami. It turns out that he’s actually just a fifth grader who yearns for friendships much like Kuroe, and the two of them become fast friends. However, Daichi’s puppy-like clingy nature and his adult-like exterior lead to a nasty misunderstanding between Minami and Kuroe… much like the misunderstanding Kuroe has for Minami and his co-star actress in a movie! I had initially thought Seina would become an obstacle for these two but I didn’t think it would be in this manner. Seina is actually quite harmless toward Minami and Kuroe, it seems. And I’m very glad. Characters made with intent to dislike them tire me out.

In addition to all these emotions, Kuroe finally has a little sister! With wings?! We find out a lot more about Kuroe’s past and her origins, as well as her mother’s past and relationship with her ex-colleague/Kuroe’s uncle figure. There had been a reason he visited them every so often for years, reasons beyond emotional attachment to either them. Though… he definitely does harbor feelings for them both (and has certainly slept with Kuroe’s mother before).

Minami and Kuroe’s relationship has been on the rocks for two whole volumes now, but will they finally mend things at last in the next volume? I’m excited to find out. Perhaps Kuroe will transform into Harugon right in front Minami. It might be the only thing she can do to get him to understand their connection, and I honestly think that this secret coming to light would strengthen their bond. Not only would it set Kuroe at ease as she’d feel no reason to hide it anymore around Minami (and as seen with Daichi, that’s all she really wants out of a friendship), but he wouldn’t feel like she’s keeping secrets from him or treating him more coldly than everyone else anymore, which seemed to be the biggest issue to him. Furthermore, he already has a sort of affection for Harugon, and I think he’s compassionate enough to understand why Kuroe hid this particular affliction from him. This would ease so much of his confusion. With as much as he loves Kuroe, and the fact that every single time, including now, that every single time Harugon appears, his first thought is about Kuroe, I think they’ll be okay.

Volume 5 starts where we left off with Kuroe's secret being known by a new character who happens to be a really tall fifth grader with issues of his own. When they get caught hanging out after playing Mine Draft (Mine Craft) by Arata, it becomes a huge misunderstanding and Kuroe decides to break up with Arata so he doesn't have to worry about her and can live a happy life in the limelight.

Meanwhile, Kuroe's mother, a biologist, goes to the island where Kuroe was born and accidentally awakens a new kaiju: Kuroe's sister.

Poor Kuroe and Arata 😭 I hope Kuroe will either tell Arata her big secret or he will piece together what's going on before it's too late. I'm looking forward to learning about Kuroe's origin story and what will change knowing about her sister kaiju. I still love the loyalty and friendships that have developed and I can't wait to read the next volume!

Well, in all manga & anime series there's going to be a few things that come off as kind of odd. We had this moment with the whole misunderstanding & jealousy over an adult man who knew the MC since she was a baby, and now we've gone the other direction with a 10 year old that looks like a college student. I'm glad that things didn't lean on Kuroe's view of him or linger in uncomfortable territory beyond highlighting his innocent kid mind, but it still put a sense of dread in me. I also knew the possibility of a break up was going to be explored in this volume, but I'm still upset.
Onto the good, though- THE EGG! I'm so happy to be exploring Kuroe's origins more and the reveal of her sister makes me so, so excited about the next volume. Also, while I'm not happy with the break up storyline, I'm so glad that it doesn't seem like things will be dragged on needlessly. Go get your girl!

I've been Kaiju obsessed since I was a kid growing up with Godzilla movies with my dad. So this series was a must for me.

I was so excited to see a manga with a girl who transforms into a Kaiju it's such a unique idea and I had to start it. I loved every moment of Kuroe's story she's just adorable even when she's trying to hide her Kaiju side and be a normal teenager. I think her love interest is perfect for her, and she has some great friends that she's making.

The Artwork is beautifully done to match a captivating story. I've devoured the first 6 and have the 7th on pre-order as I can't wait to continue this series.

Highly recommend this series if your into monsters and romance.

I’m very glad that in this volume, Kuroe’s kaiju transformation abilities were finally revealed through the form of a flashback. There was a bit of a twist that I wasn’t entirely expecting but, was still very interesting to read. Poor Kuroe’s love life isn’t going well due to Minami’s busy schedule and some misunderstandings. I like the addition of the new male character as Kuroe’s friend and while I think they both would be good friends to each other, his appearance is very unusual for me. I’m very eager to read the next volume with how the last chapter went, and due to how exciting the cliffhanger ending was.

Ahhhhh so good!! This volume has a bit of angst between Kuroe and Minami....the addition of the little boy who looks older is an interesting choice, if a little weird? But it's nice to see Kuroe able to actually open up with someone about her kaiju nature. A few misunderstandings here have the main couple on the rocks, but Kuroe's two main girlfriends do their best to hype her up and get them back together. Absolutely love the female friendships here!!

Also, a second kaiju...technically Kuroe's little sister?? I hope they can connect and not fight!!

Every volume of this series is entertaining and heartwarming with every turn of the page. This installment introduces us to the mysterious individual who witnessed Kuroe's ability as a Kaiju in the previous volume. As with all of the people she meets, there is more to this individual than one would think. Also, Kuroe's mom's secret has been revealed and it's a whopper, to say the least. The only problem is the wait for the next book to come out.

I loved this volume! We are getting closer and closer to finding out the mysteries of the Kaiju’s which is making this series more enthralling and entertaining. We also got a new character in this volume. I found him enjoyable and added a great new comedic tone amongst the love drama. Overall I am finding myself more and more impressed as this series progresses and I can’t wait for the next volume!

As the fifth installment of this manga series, this volume brings a lot more possibilities from the arrival of the second kaiju (monster). The artwork as always by Aoki is amazing and very fun. There is the idea of coming of change and interestingly the impact and consequences of fame are also talked about.

It's been a while since I read the first 4 volumes, and I don't know if I forgot or if it just got worse, but wow is the mom an asshole! Seriously, woman, what the fuck?! Also, we are reaching the "misunderstanding and drama" section of the romcom, blergh. I still think the premise here is interesting, but Jesus, that volume did nothing to sustain my interest.

I need more 😭

Honestly I need more. I love this manga so much. I put off reading this for a few days just so it wouldn’t be over so quickly… then I blazed through it in 30 minutes or so… Now I have to wait for volume 6 to be translated 😭

This series is starting to progress in an unexpected way. I don't know how to feel about what is to come in the future with this one. I'm trying to be vague here and not spoil things, but I am intrigued, and worried at this point.

Siblings! Weird fake love squares! A pending Kaiju on Kaiju fight?!?!?

This volume really ramped things up.

I think what I like is that every character is flawed. They all have their own personal issues with their look or image.

Aww, poor kid. Oddballs have it so bad and kids can be so mean. I'm glad Kuroe found another friend in Daichi. It really sucks that Minami wouldn't listen to what she had to say.

Wow, sister came to battle her! Wait, does that mean that Minami knows that Harugon is Kuroe?!

The good: we get some answers about Kuroe's origin, plus a new kaiju. The bad: Daichi, a grade schooler who looks like he's in college and has figured out Kuroe's secret. I do not like this character, and I don't like how he's going to negatively affect the book.
