Texas of the 1880's was a land of opportunity. Texas needed people willing to take a chance, stake their claim, and when needed, tame the lawless. Enter Mike Stone, a New Mexico bartender with a fast and deadly gun, and Ash McKinnon, from the backwoods of Tennessee. They join the Texas Rangers and along the way, meet the daughter of an Army Major and a horse ranch owner.
Together, they leave their mark on a new and wide open land.
Patrick Lindsay came to Texas by way of Missouri, Canada, and California and has been proud to call the Lone Star State his home for more than forty years now. He retired in 2017 from “another life” as a CPA, whereafter he turned his hand to writing.
He has read just about everything by Louis L’Amour and first decided to give Western writing a try on his initial day of retirement. He has been writing ever since and loves the idea that so many people get enjoyment from his work.
Patrick and his wife Michelle live on a cattle ranch near Fort Worth along with cows, horses, chickens, and a very spoiled Great Pyrenees dog. He is an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals in baseball and the Kansas City Chiefs in football.
Strangers Mike Young and Sarah Stratton inherit 100 acres of unsettled land, half to each. This land has been used occasionally by squatters and as a hideout for outlaws, with rumors of buried gold on the land. With a thought that he may like to run cattle on his 50 acres, Mike and his buddy, Ash McKinnon, join a cattle drive to make money. This story has a great plot and the characters evolve from herders to becoming Texas Rangers with a lot of adventure.
I can't tell you what possessed me to get this book on Kindle. I like westerns, and I like stories about the Texas Rangers -- and this book clicked both of those. The two main characters were fun. They enjoyed each other, and the writer made them enjoyable to follow. It took me a while to finish this, as I have not been reading on my Kindle as much as I had in the past. Good, easy, and fun read -- if westerns are in your wheelhouse, you might enjoy this.
This is a book bundle meaning two stories in one book. Texas Rangers Mike Stone and Ash McKinnon, meet up, go on a cattle drive and then are invited to join the Rangers. Along the way, Mike meets Sarah while investigating land they both inherited, while Ash works on horse thieving and meets Jessica on her ranch where she breeds top notch horses. The stories are guaranteed to hold a reader's interest and both hubby and I love this genre’. Thanks for great stories.
If you've worked on a successful team you've learned the strong bonds are held together with trust and humor. Mike and Ash are the essential partnership that gives the story a base that allows many well conceived characters to shine. You've got me at the table......keep dishing out the stories!!!
I would recommend this book as a YA, but I think it is too boring for youth. For a western, there is a dearth of action and the characters are all cardboard cutouts and overly predictable.
Mike Stone - Story one The story starts out when Mike Stone and Ash McKinnon meet on a cattle drive. Another of the drovers was Red, a Texas Ranger, that took leave to go on the drive to earn some extra money. As Stone & McKinnon had no other plans after the drive was completed they joined the Texas Rangers at Red's request. Prior to the drive Stone was helping an old timer(Miles Young) and ended up in a fire fight with some bad men. Miles was lung shot and new he was dying. He gave some papers to Stone giving him title to half of the 100 acres he had. The other half belonged to Miles's partner that he had not seen or heard from in many years. The other 50 acres were owned by Sarah Statt on who inherited them from her uncle. Sarah is being followed by an outlaw that heard about something Sarah's uncle had buried on the land which turned out to be and old hiding place for the Sam Bass gang years ago. There is plenty of action and suspense but things turn out well for Stone and Sarah.
Vanishing Trail - Story two This story deals more with Ash McKinnon. Ash became a Texas Ranger after the cattle drive. He was trying to track down a horse thief ring where the participants did not know more than the next person. Ash drew this assignment after his friend, Red, who had gotten him into the Texas Ranger was bushwhacked and killed. The only lead was found on Red's body, a drawing of a very small footprint. McKinnon was sent to the Maitlin Ranch as they had some very fine part arabian horses they were breeding. Ash hoped he could catch the thief in the act of stealing the horses. From this point forward there is a lot of action and suspense. It is really worth reading and I wanted to hurry through to see how it turned out. When I finished I wanted more, it was that good.

Stone and McKinnon make good detectives as well as Texas
I'm glad they both found girls and since they've been promoted, I'm wondering if this is the last book? There was sure a lot to discover and unwind in this book and many turns throughout, but at least all the bad outlaws are dead!
This double adventure was a fun read with a good story. Lots of action in the combination western made it interesting throughout. I thought the author proved to be a good story teller with believable plot and a satisfying conclusion.
