Actual Rating: 3.75 (lol one day I won't have to say actual rating)

If I were to sum up, all the volumes in this series and pick which one was the pinnacle of the series and contained the climax, volume 9 would be it.

Not only did the plot progress significantly in this volume, with Kousuke confronting his "friends" who are trying to sabotage his relationship with Masahiro, but Masahiro himself has finally come into his own. Masahiro is not the same meek, crying boy we met in volume one. He is now a young man who knows what he wants, and he isn't going to let anyone take it from him. He has finally taken the lead in the relationship and not only brings out the best in Kousuke but, in many ways, holds him up. Kousuke wasn't lying when he said Masahiro was the strong one in the relationship.

We get this considerable headway on the plot, but we also finally see Kensuke realize that his feelings for Hasekura are more than a child-like love; their relationship is finally taking a turn in the much more romantic department. Then we have Yuge, who ultimately might slide into Natsuo's life a little more now.

I can't wait to see where the subsequent volumes bring us.

Everything about this volume was great, including the order of the chapters and the beautiful cover!

I am very happy with the way the whole Natsuo situation concluded. I still can't believe him and Masahiro got into it like that... and in front of Ayaka and Houjou, no less! Though the situation was serious I could not stop laughing! They were just standing there watching this grown man and teenager exchange blows like its all good. 😭😭 And the way Houjou was looking like he was seriously analyzing everything..LOL!!

I'm falling in love with Yuge's character and am so glad he is a part of this story. Seeing Natsuo through his eyes has really helped me move past my initial resentment and become more interested in getting to know him. Suddenly Natsou is this handsomely fascinating and mysterious person... quietly suffering while trying to maintain a stoic expression on his face. I hope Yuge is able to break through to him. I do have a feeling he's slowly chipping away at this walls.

I'm glad Masahiro and Kousuke finally moved in together but it would have been nice to read about Masahiro's conversation with his mom. I honestly can't even imagine how that conversation went. Was she relieved, scared, or completely indifferent? And what does his outer circle of friends have to say about it? Especially Shige, who very obviously has a crush on him. The bonus stories were cute and the ending was actually a nice place to stop before the events of the next volume begin.

It's time for cuteness overload!
Took it 4 pages to kill me dead! The chp 41 page with Masahiro snuggling Kousuke's hand just got me so bad!

In this volume things like Hasekura eating his huge noodle bowl empty in a blink of an eye, Kousuke's Mission Impossible -entry, & Masahiro and Yuge being two wives in the kitchen really well encapture the slice-of-life-ness and situation comedy I find so funny. The sit-com style of humour is a big part of the series and it works super well.

Maybe my favourite quote from the book: "Masahiro. Didn't you tell me before that your fears somehow disappear when you're with me? Well, I feel that even more strongly than you. I feel that there's nothing to be affraid of when I'm with you Masahiro." It just got me all teary eyed and fantasizing about this kind of love!

Key words: Lolicon, Beach Episode, Get Jiggy with it

The story is kind of going off the rails a little, but I enjoyed this volume. I still don't really understand the whole deal with Onda or what he was trying to accomplish. Are they ever going to go into his backstory, or are we just leaving that comment about his teacher? And it was pretty overly dramatic for Kousuke to rappel down the side of the building and smash through his window, when it ultimately only took a little bit of conversation to convince Onda he was being a jerk and he should back off on his Ruin Setagawa's Life plans.

Then again, smashing through windows is something Kousuke's done before in this series, so it's just part of the occasional over-the-top action.

I did like the little note about how Onda went Big Drama in the past when he thought, incorrectly, that Houjou and Kousuke were rivals for Ayaka. So even with his big political career he's just kind of dumb and impulsive like the rest of their group. It's nice to see a bit more of all of them in action.

The big thing that I loved was that it was Setagawa who confronted Natsuo...using his words and then his fists. The fact that it's very much unlike him - he apologized to Natsuo four times before taking it to that level, after Natsuo sucker-punched him first - makes it even more effective. Loved the panels with Setagawa standing up after his win, and Kousuke coming in the door and seeing him. Loved that Houjou and Ayaka were just standing there watching because they didn't know what to do while the guys just battled things out.

Setagawa is honestly just a really awesome character, and I don't know why I'm so surprised that the manga actually treats him that way. His entire character design is Delinquent who's really only reformed because he found a place to belong and people who appreciate his kind heart. Kousuke says it himself at one point, when telling Shirou what makes Setagawa the special one he's fighting so hard to keep: Setagawa is stronger and kinder than him, and the reality is that he's sort of locking him down before the rest of the world figures that out.

(In an early volume note, there's a mention that Setagawa could've been really popular if he'd tried, and I definitely think that's true.)

The hero of this series is really Setagawa, but he'll probably never figure that out for himself. He's just so happy to have found a home.

The wrench thrown into their moving in together plans isn't actually that bad, so I'm not sure what the next drama will be there. I loved how happy Setagawa was, although...even though he thought about what to tell his mom, he still hasn't actually done it.

Also interesting that the Ohshiba dad is finally coming back home. There's a ton of resentment between him and Kousuke, who took over the dad role at a young age, and has always felt a particular responsibility for Ken, because Ken and their mom almost died when she was giving birth. Their dad chose his workplace and his employees over his family, and while Kousuke knows now that ultimately saved a lot of people's livelihoods and their families, he can't forgive his father for abandoning them. That backstory feeds a lot into his character and definitely makes you understand his personality better.

Natsuo is...I dunno. I still don't know how I feel about him, but somehow I was charmed as much as Yunge by that panel of Natsuo burying his face in the cat's fur. He is showing a few more layers, and I can actually start to see more of that connection, and how Yunge's positivity and persistence might be good in the long run.

I guess the guy in the mask was just Natsuo's dom, and it was slightly ambiguous in earlier appearances because this is still a pretty sfw series. But there were more open discussions about his "dating" history, most of which has been on the fairly self-destructive side because he never let himself give up on the idea of Kousuke. Setagawa finally hammered that home.

I suspect they'll all stay friends after this...there's some jealousy, yeah, but Setagawa is also increasingly confident in their relationship and very open with Kousuke about his expectations and what's reserved for the two of them. Loved their conversation after the fight. Really just love so much about their relationship.

Ken and Hasekura are making less rapid progress, but they're cute enough. Still happier with them as background characters, really, so it's nice to have them shift out of the spotlight a bit more.

The whole other teacher thing was...unnecessary? I don't know what Onda's goal was with her, and while it was funny to have her present at the bar fight and a little bit in awe of Setagawa as a result, she didn't really need to be there for things to progress. And is there going to be any actual resolution with her and her student? Do we care? Plus, I'd thought there was going to be more actual lead-up to her figuring out that Kousuke was dating Setagawa and not Ayaka, but that reveal all happened off the page.

Not perfect, but a good volume, with one of my favorite covers so far.

Masahiro and Kousuke "kind of" move in together, and Yuge is trying to integrate himself into Natsuo's life, but it's very slow going. Natsuo has a metaphorical thick wall around him, and he is guarded because of the feeling he had towards Kousuke. Yuge wants to be with Natsuo, but he's having a hard time getting Natsuo to see him as a possible partner. Kousuke's "friends" plotted to break off his relationship with Masahiro for two volumes, and of course, it doesn't work. Masahiro is still developing, and he isn't the over the top cry baby like he was in the beginning. He's grown into his own, and his confidence is ever growing.

Now, Kensuke, on the other hand, still acts like he's super young and needs more development. He finally realizes he's actually in love with Hasa and not just a friend love. I do hope they'll have more development later cause their relationship feels stagnant.

The first half to 2/3rds was really good. I enjoyed the whole fight and back and forth of the struggle between Mas and Kos friend. Even though that friend seems to be problematic at times I can’t help but love him. Especially when he’s all over Mary when he’s just bummed out. I hope we see more of him and his development of a character. Especially since I kind of hope he ends up with our other sweet boy.

I have the sudden urge to dangle from a rope connected to the roof, and bust into a window.
