During the Christmas party at Masamune's house, Koeda learned that Masamune's parents are remarried and that Masamune isn't blood-related to his dad. Masamune himself said that he wasn't concerned about it, but he's been acting a bit strange... Koeda wants to help Masamune, but he turns her down, saying, "I don't want you to see a disappointing side of me"...?! What can Koeda do to open the door to Masamune's heart...?! Currently a super popular series in Bessatsu Friend!! It's one awkward girl in love's pure ☆slow step love story -- volume 12☆
It’s been pretty smooth sailing for Koeda and Masamune lately, but Christmas throws an unexpected wrinkle into things when it becomes clear that Masamune’s got some serious father issues. Meddling and concern blur together and also it’s time for careers!
Phew, this sure takes a different path than I was expecting. Masamune’s dad is not, in fact, his dad in the biological sense and he’s being a real teenage boy about it. Luckily Koeda is not the type to mind her own business and she’s here to sort things out.
I actually liked this storyline - not because it’s particularly novel, but Masamune’s dad is... something else. I have never seen anybody quite like him in the pantheon of manga dads. He’s this huge bulk of a man who has an incredibly taciturn manner of speaking that I kind of loved. Unique dad makes for something new.
I mean, Masamune handles all of this particularly poorly, being overly emotional and using the most cliche means of trying to measure his dad’s affection for him (this too is vintage teenager/children thinking). He’s trying to express himself and doing an incredibly poor job of it.
I love the way Koeda helps bring about a resolution and helps Masamune open up more. When he tries to hide this all away because he doesn’t want her to see him being less than perfect, the way she disarms him is very funny and provides a really nice recap to the series (those poor first years).
Later on, when he pushes her too far about her career plans (what is it with dieticians as a career path in manga, exactly?), the way he gets back in her good graces is absolutely adorable. This book captures a genuine sense of young love that I really enjoy - that feeling of invincibility and general fondness for big gestures really shows through the writing.
Nothing particularly negative to really note, except a lack of En-chan. Always need more En-chan.
3.5 stars, but rounding up because this is a very strong instalment of a series that isn’t what I would call higher tier, but does a mighty good job once in a while and, indeed, this is one of those times.
YALL- EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS VOLUME I FCKING LOVE. IT'S JUST SO...... WOW!!!!!
SPOILERS BELOW
This volume focused more on Masamune and his relationship with his family, as what we found out in the end of last volume, his real father died and he is living with his stepfather. In this volume, we get to see his dad and his "strained" relationship with them. First of all, I'm glad that Ichinohe-sensei wrote his father in the way who has a kind demeanor; since it is very common in shoujo mangas to have a dad who is extremely strict to the ML. So seeing his dad be kind was a refreshing take. I would also like to applaud how well Koeda handled this. To be honest, Masamune was written as a "perfect" character who has little to no flaws and who is always extremely supportive of Koeda, so it was nice to see in this volume that it was Koeda who supported and affirmed Masamune. I think this whole arc was written very very very beautifully. I loved reading every chapter on it. Normally, I'm not a huge fan of "family arcs" but I think this manga did it so so so well.
Moving on from this, the last chapter in this volume was about Koeda and Masamune's future. It has been a lowkey recurring topic in this manga wherein Koeda is a bit scared of the future and I think this last chapter was a great way to see what path she decided on.
Y'all probably tired from me saying this but the leads here truly are perfect and I love them so much and I can't believe the next volume is the last. *sobs*

the random family problems on the guy's side is an indicator we're running out of ideas.
koeda just choosing to do the same thing as masamune because she can't think of anything she wants makes you realize she doesn't have any interests. her defining feature is her stature. being caring and insecure doesn't complete her. we literally don't know about anything she likes other than masamune. i couldn't even predict what she wanted to write on her career survey. things like this don't really matter in shoujo until we get to talking about the future.
on the subject of career surveys... actually, i can't. it's too close to reality.
Masamune and his dad situation was interesting. But now the college and future stuff?? No. I don’t think Koeda should be a teacher. I just don’t think it’s for her. Masamune? Yes he would totally be a fun and interesting teacher.. Plus, I want to see Koeda have an interest that isn’t because of Masamune. Or hell, if she doesn’t want to go to college, so be it. But of course, if you don’t go to college, you’re worthless LOL
Some needed character development/ background on Masamune, everyone has problems, even him. Nice to see him overcome it with Koeda by his side. His little note to her was so cute 😅 Looking foreword to the final volume being released.
Omg this one was so freaking cute. They are so cute together. I loved their relationship. They are both kind of insecure but not about their feelings or trust in each other.
