BANSHEE CRY is the first in Jen Katemi's BLOOD FAE CHRONICLES paranormal romance series. Each book is set in a world full of magical realism and steamy desire, and each story delivers it's own happy-ever-after ending.
Jen Katemi is a USA Today bestselling author of steamy contemporary and paranormal romance. She is published with Evernight Publishing, and also has forged a successful indie career with her popular HELLHOUND PROTECTORS, GODS OF LOVE, BLOOD FAE CHRONICLES and FORBIDDEN series.
When she’s not writing, Jen runs an editing and proofreading service, looks after the family and pampers various cats. She lives in Melbourne, Australia.
BANSHEE CRY is the first book in the Blood Fae Chronicles, and we find out about a banshee female who has taken the 'job' of creating more hybrid banshees. This is not a particular hardship on her, but more so on the men and babies, she leaves behind. One of those is Aleah. Due to her history with vampires, she is not very sympathetic when Luc Durand comes a-knocking on her door, asking for help. The attraction is instantaneous, but she fights it, for a little while.
This is a steamy paranormal tale that has sadness as well as heat. It is well-written, with a smooth and fairly fast pace. I can't wait to find out more about the overall story arc and how it fits in with the rest. For a novella, there is a lot to this story, and plenty of hints of more to come.
A quick read that I thoroughly enjoyed and have no hesitation in recommending.
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *
A novella about Aleah, a half-breed Banahee and Luc, a paranormal cop set in regional Victoria, Australia.
There are murders happening, and Aleah as a Banshee, has a minuscule amount of advance knowledge of when this will occur as her Banshee Cry commences when Death is near. Luc, a vampire detective is chasing down the rogue vampires and werewolf’s causing these murders.
This is a story of how two people come together against adversity and uncover a bigger plot (for stories to come). The point of view swaps between Luc and Aleah throughout the story.
It’s great reading books by Australian authors set in Australia. You get a sense of the characters developing and growing. Clearly this will be a start of a broader series following more Banshee half-siblings. I look forward to reading the next one.
Fast paced, engaging and steamy PNR. Half human/half banshee beekeeper saves the life of a vampire detective when he stumbles injured onto her porch after tangling with a pair of rogues he is hunting. Despite her intense dislike of vampires they are drawn to each other and things get both sexy and emotional while the hunt continues. I enjoyed the Australian setting and the glimpse of the fae and am looking forward to meeting her siblings.
------------------------------
I actually feel that these kinds of stories are no longer for me.
Although he has a good rhythm, in fact everything happens very fast. The thing that made me feel strange reading it the most was that it focused only on its two main characters.
Banshee Cry is a fun, steamy little paranormal/fantasy novella.
Aleah, a half-Banshee, is minding her own business out on her bee farm when she's interrupted by an injured paranormal vampire cop, Luc. Now, vampires are the worst sort, having killed her father, and not to mention all the past trauma that starts boiling up to the surface just at the sight of him. Add to that, there's the small fact that Banshee's blood is super alluring and addictive to vampires and that's a super hard pass of helping the cop. Except he doesn't act like any vamp she's ever met (not that she's really met all that many) and there's just something about the dark and mysterious man that calls to her a well.
Luc Durand is not used to depending on others but he made a stupid mistake trying to save a child and he ended up paying the price for it. He must charm the delectable little Banshee so he can rest and heal and can get back on the case of paranormals that are behaving weirdly. Different breeds are teaming up and the human population is paying the price. Can he resist this enigmatic banshee's siren call for long enough to solve the mystery and keep more people from dying?
Banshee Cry is fun, fast-paced, and steamy with a lil bit of insta-lust/love thrown in. I want to know so much more about Aleah's mum and the whole soldier's backstory. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series.

While 'Banshee Cry: A Steamy Paranormal Fantasy Romance' is indeed it's title, I was expecting more of a build up to the sexy scenes between the two main characters. However the first sexual encounter is literally their first encounter and it also occurs at the opening of the book. Yes. The story is told via both main characters perspectives, switching between the two. I enjoyed Aleah's more than Luc's. Aleah is a banshee which is a type of fae, and Luc is a vampire who works for the police. I've never encountered a story about a banshee before so I thought it was interesting but I found the wailing to be silly and unintentionally comical. A vampire working for the police also seems quite interesting but unfortunately most of Luc's inner monologue is dominated by how badly he wants to bang Aleah. There was also too many contradictory sentiments, for example, he wants to show Aleah that he's 'not like the other vamps' (I'm paraphrasing) and prove he's not a predator by showing that vampires can 'create feelings of bliss and elation just as well as fear' - completely against her will. He actually thinks this as he's walking away from her house after he's just been kicked out and exploited her hospitality by trying to fuck her after she literally saved his life. He is also overwhelmed with feelings of protectiveness and insta-love for Aleah when she is devastated by her friend and neighbour having her head ripped off by a rogue vampire (he inexplicably is at the scene before she gets there) but when he gets her home to bed, he is consumed with the inner turmoil of whether or not be should seduce her with a 'vampire blood call' that she would be unable to physically resist AKA bang her without her consent.

BANSHEE CRY is the first instalment in Jen Katemi’s contemporary, adult BLOOD FAE CHRONICLES erotic, paranormal romance series. This is twenty-nine year old, half-Fae/ half-human banshee Aleachiarsiwella aka Aleah, and two-hundred and eight six year old, vampire Luc Durand’s story line.
NOTE: A banshee is part of Irish mythology; a fae or sprite whose keening wail warns of impending death.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Aleah and Luc) BANSHEE CRY follows in the aftermath of the appearance of an injured vampire at Aleah’s front door. Knowing that, years before, vampires had killed her beloved father, Aleah is reluctant to offer help but something about Luc Durand stirs deep within our story line heroine. Luc Durand is a member of the supernatural police force, and as such is searching for a group of rogue ‘supes’ who are targeting both humans and supernaturals alike. An attack against her neighbors and friends finds Aleah on the defensive but it is the appearance and aid of a surprising foe that reveals more abut Aleah’s past than she could have ever imagined. What ensues is the quick building relationship between Aleah and Luc, and the potential fall-out as Aleah is targeted for who and what she is.
Approximately twenty five years earlier, vampires had attacked and killed the only parent she ever knew, and in this, our heroine is cautious and hesitant about helping the injured vampire. With little knowledge about her mother or her own abilities as a member of the Fae, Aleah battles between head and heart, and the less than perfect powers of her Banshee wail.
Luc Durand is a vampire who lost his maker years before. As a member of the supernatural police force it is Luc’s duty to hunt down the rogue supernaturals who are targeting and destroying so many lives.
The relationship between Aleah and Luc begins acrimoniously as Aleah continues to struggle with the death of her father, at the hands of a supernatural being. Aleah’s attraction to Luc is measured equally by Luc’s attraction to Leah but it is the scent of her blood that pushes Luc to want to claim Aleah as his own. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
The secondary and supporting characters include Renna and Tarrien, two members of the Winter Court Fae, as well as Aleah’s friend Laura. Tarrien and Indigo’s story is next in Banshee Song.
BANSHEE CRY is a fast paced, imaginative and spicy story; a dramatic and intense tale that reveals some of the background and history that have led our couple to the here and now.
“Many are afraid of the banshee cry, which purportedly means death for those who hear it.”
Meet our main character: Aleah. She has a ridiculous long real name that nobody but her mother can pronounce and is a banshee without a proper voice. Aleah lost her father when she was four years old because he was murdered by two vampires (or so she thinks). One night Aleah goes outside of her cozy farm in the middle of nowhere in Australia only to find handsome, incredibly sexy vampire Luc Durand who is on the brink of death. Against her own judgement Aleah decides Luc deserves a place to recover. We all know the most perfect place to recover is the not so comfortable couch of course. The two get to know each other *wink wink* and the rest is history. And oh yeah, there are murderers on the loose, so that adds a fun mystery element.
First of all, the things I liked. I loved the world building and liked the representation. Luc is a bisexual vampire who is not afraid to be honest and speak his mind. We also have Dave, who is a cute, little boy who has Down syndrome. If you’re all for insta-love and un-explainable attraction between characters, this one is for you. I liked the banter between Luc and Aleah. And last but not least, the smutty scenes in this one are definitely some to remember.
Second of all, I liked the side characters way more than the main ones… Which is a shame. I loved the elderly couple living next to Aleah, her friend Laura and son Dave and let’s not forget the most important characters in the entire book: THE CATS. I LOVED THE CATS AND THEIR PERSONALITIES. For whatever reason I just couldn’t connect to Aleah as a character. She just fell flat for me. What would’ve helped me connect more to her was just see her go about her day to day businesses in the town where we could’ve met some of the people she speaks highly of and in which we would also feel more connected to Aleah and her personality. I think a chapter like this could’ve given me the extra push I needed to care more about certain events further in the book. Luc is somewhat better but not in the way that I became attached. Furthermore, sometimes he is just straight up creepy… Like really creepy. He did some questionable stuff in relation to Aleah.
Third of all, the writing. The writing is really not my thing. All the unnecessary questions, all the ridiculous and irrelevant thoughts Aleah has… Why. At some point in the book I just stopped highlighting these because it became too much and really started to bug me. Sometimes certain sentences were written to explain things to the readers that are implied and thus very clear without the extra explanation. Readers are not stupid. Also, some things just didn’t make any sense. Sometimes I had to reread sentences or scenes more than once just because I was confused about what was going on.
Fourth, I liked the mystery element and deciphering along with the characters what exactly is going on. I loved the way this was heading and this is one of the elements that might be able to convince me to still pick up the second book in this series.
Lastly, this book made me laugh… Hard. Sometimes I think the author intended for it to be a funny sentence or scene. Other times I think it was just the really dramatic writing or bad choice of words? But oh well, the book made me laugh and I definitely can appreciate that fact.
Trigger warnings: bad sexual experience, murder, loss of a loved one, gory descriptions
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Flourish Books for giving me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
If you want to read something where its only 15% good plot and the rest is just steam and sex then here you go. Otherwise pass.
The last 15% of the book was I guess what redeemed this from a 1 star to a 2 star for me.
I have never read a book with a banshee in it and hence why I requested this one from Netgalley because I am all for learning about different fae and I thought this one would be a quick read. And it is a very quick readthrough. But, yeah this one didnt do it for me. There was a lot of unanswered plot points like they kept alluding to how Aleahs real name would be a bad thing if found out but didnt go into who send those two loup after her or really go into why besides to take her blood. Why are banshees almost extinct and why does her mother, in the loosest of terms, need to be the sole procreator of their species.
Some of the writing really skeeved me out. After a particular sex scene in which he tells her, “Wash off the residue of our lovemaking and enjoy all the nuances of sensation that your no-longer-virginal body will now reveal." ..........yikes. I almost dnf'd right there.
I also had some major issues with the fact that Aleah could have been likeable if it werent for the annoyingly cliché of "no i cant be with you, all vampires are bad, one killed my father" to having sex with him on the next page and "my only friends were brutally murdered but now I have to bone this vampire".
The one fight scene was written mostly well, but then youd have Aleah trying to act all badass which she is not by her taunts that consisted of “Come on, you crazy, naked little vamp. Want to play? Try me.”
So um yeah, for anyone wondering, major pass.
I recieved this from Netgalley for my honest review.
***
Banshee Cry is definitely a story with quite some steam :) The vampire of this story does not only seduce his banshee with his body, no, also feelings are coming up their way. What really drives them together, you have to find out for yourself.
However, when you do be prepared that the ride is rather a quick one ;) Feelings appear rather quick and there is definitely no back and forth all the time. Both of them very soon realize what they want.
Of course there is a storyline itself as well, however, we do not get to explore too much of the world. Hopefully this changes in book 2.
Definitely a book for a chill afternoon, easy, sexy and really hot.
Aleah (Aleachiarsiwella) is a banshee without a voice. Abandoned by her mother, she is one of the rarest kind of fae. Her first banshee experience was her own father's death at the hands of vampires. She was raised to believe all vampires were evil and that she was a defective, worthless and helpless half-breed. She's hidden herself out in the country to limit the deaths that affect her and keep herself from the cruelties of specism.
Sergeant Luc Durand is a vampire who works for the Supernatural Division of the Australian Federal Police. While hunting down rogues he's severely injured and seeks shelter from a nearby farm. He's greeted by a woman who'd rather see him dead than help him.
To say their beginning was rough and awkward is an understatement but Aleah's generous, kind heart couldn't let the vampire die to the sun off of her porch. When the rogues strike again it will throw these two together, leading them to something neither of them were expecting.
Luc is drawn to the siren call of Aleah's blood but quickly falls for this tender soul, struggling with her gifts. Aleah cannot believe she's attracted to a vampire but Luc shows her that not all vampires are evil.
A little sweet romance and steam to go with supernatural murder. This novella is a great beginning to the Blood Fae Chronicles series.
This was a very short read that gave a pretty self contained story. We get a tidy happy ended that was satisfying and can most likely standalone.
Aleah is a banshee who doesn't quite work right. Her voice was injured/hidden when her father was horribly murdered, so while she still feels the deaths close to her, she can't actually warn anyone. To handle this, she's set out to find her own land set aside from most other humans. That doesn't stop her from making reluctant friends, but this story almost immediately starts with her announcing (brokenly) some nearby deaths.
This coincides with the arrival of a vampire investigator (supernaturals are "out" in this world). The horrible deaths in the area are part of his larger investigation, but that gets pretty derailed when he Luc meets Aleah. She has some baggage about vampires, though, so they have some issues to overcome before getting that HEA.
By the end, we get a lot more information about this world and the supernaturals. Aleah's family is further revealed, as is the world that is involved in tracking a bunch of banshee half-siblings that I assume we will meet in future installments. This book had a blend of smut, mystery, and fantasy - so if that's a good genre blend for you, this book is a quick an easy read.
There aren't many books with banshees as main characters around, so I was definitely curious to read one. However, I wasn't as satisfied after reading it as I'd like to. While Aleah seemed like she could develop into a really interesting character, it somehow never happened. Aside from a few scenes where I could really appreciate her, like dragging herself out to help her friends even at the cost of the highest sacrifice, she felt outright boring and naive. I could not really connect with her, and her train of thoughts was very far from what I can relate to. Also Luc was a conflicting character for me, on one side he felt like a creep, on the other one there were some redeemable qualities to him. I personally think the story only started to get interesting when queen bitch (ehm, Aleah's mother) entered the scene, as she brought some fresh air to the story otherwise packed with steam and horny thoughts and an occasional reminder of the danger outside. Pity it was only towards the end. As well as getting a glimpse of the Fae realm, Aleah's true heritage, and the court life. I would love to see more of this. The writing wasn't bad, but the story was simply very average for me and too concentrated on the insta-love between the main characters.
Aleah is half-Fae and human... and a banshee as the title suggests. Duh. She's been screaming the deaths of people since she was a babe. Her first client per se, was he dad. Killed by two vampires long ago. She's now 29 living away at a farm, where her closest neighbors are at a long distance considering she lived in the city prior. But the past ain't that of concern, the concern is the vampire on her doorstep asking for aid before the sun crisp in into nothingness. She ain't no madwoman, and she harbors the vampire.
Luc, cute and a Sargent. He's there being saved by the banshee, but also saving her -- from isolation. And getting her heart and blood too.
Yeah yeah, they will hit it off and the double POV is kinda cute for this story. If this book has too much blood I didn't notice, I've become numb to it, unless it is too in the face and too awful to turn a blind eye on. But hey, it's cute and fast, and there's a whole lore to investigate when rogues are dangling with necromancy. More to come apparently.
surprizingly good action paced easy and quick read
Hahhh honestly I cant remember why I bought this book as I didnt found the cover catching. But after multiple catching-covery but flat story book I just checked my recent purchases and randomly picked sg as I didnt read anything about Banshees for a while now. And how happy I am I did?! There is story and action and while a bit scary and bloody in some places it kept me stuck to this book. I also like the tension of course. Enemies to lovers is always a good choice and here it has some spice over it… yummy So Ally I found a nice lovable character and of course Mr. HotFrenchVamp darkahirblueeyes—> what can go wrong?! So I really enjoyed the story and the culprit happening in the background! And while its A&L story Im defenitely interested in Indie and his warrior (good teaser Dear Author :D) So yes you can count in me with book 2!
DNF. He comes out as an entitled asshole, when his thought process after she kicks him out of her house is something like: " how dare she reject me, nobody else has ever rejected me.This isn't over, she wants me, she's just denying her desire. I’m so good in bed, my myriad lovers can attest to that, she didn’t give me a chance, but she will" Fuck you, dude! And it gets worse. The next night, after he finds her in the just murdered neighbors' house, weak and in pain and vulnerable, he takes advantage of that to get into her house, take off her clothes, ogle her while she’s unconscious, and then take his clothes off and get into bed with her. All the while he’s conscious of the violation but doesn’t give a fuck. At this point I asked myself if I wanted to continue reading about this guy, and the answer was: NOPE. He thinks of himself as in a higher moral ground to others, he’s the quintessential “nice guy”.
Banshee Cry: A Steamy Paranormal Fantasy Romance (Blood Fae Chronicles Book 1) by Jen Katemi Publisher: Flourish Books Genre: Romance | Sci Fi & Fantasy Release Date: November 9, 2020
Banshee Cry is the first book in the Blood Fae Chronicles series by Jen Katemi.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the characters and the storyline. The romance was steamy (NSFW) and the banter was fun. I thought this was a unique take on the banshee story and I enjoyed all of the paranormal touches.
This was a quick read that I could not put down. I was able to read it all in one sitting! I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Banshee Song!
I'm so grateful to Jen Katemi, Flourish Books, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this ARC ebook in exchange for my honest review.
-I received a free ebook copy of this book with Netgalley in exchange for an honest review-
Honestly, I have mixed feelings about this book. The blurb really lured me in and I was excited to read it because it's not often that I find books about Banshees. But I don't really know what to think now. I did enjoy reading it. It's a quick read and the story is fast-paced and exciting. However, the romance didn't really work for me. I felt like the main character didn't have a mind of her own and was influenced by the male love interest way too easily and quickly. I found some issues regarding consent and it didn't really work for me to be honest. Which is a shame because apart from that, it was good! The writing style was fluid and all, but it's really the romance that made me rate it only 3 stars. And yes, I knew that it was going to be steamy, and that's not the problem. The issus is really how it's written and brought about.
Anyway I'd still like to read the next one because the plot intrigues me!
Aleah is a banshee whom has looked to avoid any further trouble. She lives in the country with her bees in hope of escaping death and living a quiet live. However, evil has a way of popping up and changing everything. Aleah abruptly meets Luca as he is escaping the very evil that has permeated her community. Aleah is slow to help taking in the considerations and natural consequences of a vampire into her home. But she did not anticipate that sparks may fly...
I would recommend this for anyone who likes steamy gripping love story. I rate this a 4 out of five and would definitely put this on your to be read list! I felt like the plot was original and new and had a cool twist! This Netgalley ARC was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review.
There are 2 books to be reviewed here - Banshee Cry and Banshee Song, although there is a 3rd in the series, Banshee power. It is the Blood Fae Chronicles series. A fantasy novel which takes on a Banshee as a main character which is so different from a witch or a were or... The thing we all know about Banshees, is that they cry when a death is to happen. Well not so much a cry as a scream. Except that our heroine Banshee has a very soft voice. So not much use as a warning. And she is only part Banshee, the other part is immortal Fae. Which means she has powers. A good set of fantasy stories. With lots of different Fae and other creatures. Some battles/fights, some power plays, and other normal issues between the various races. If you like fantasy, then read the 3 books.
I found this to be a rather middle-of-the-road book. I liked the characters, the lore, and the worldbuilding. The plot was interesting if a little shallow. The romance was sultry, though there was very little behind it. The main couple fell in lust and then love in a matter of days, and it had little to do with anything other than an instant attraction and sex appeal.
The writing was clear and paced well, but overall, I found the entire book lacking. There was very little depth or answers to be had, the majority of the plot was stretched between this and further books, so it ended up feeling very half-finished and surface-level. It wasn't a bad book - I enjoyed it, and I'm glad I read it, but it wasn't spectacular or something I'd recommend over any other book in the same genre.
It might be short this story but it's packed with chemistry, well written characters, a good plot and some good action. It even includes the glimpse of another world. Everything was well developed and you came away having read a good story in a short amount of time. Couldn't have asked for more.... ooo yes and the main female character being a banshee wasn't something I've read about often. So a story with a unique twist was another tick box filled.
I received this book from the author via Voracious Readers Only for the pleasure of reading and leaving an honest review.Looking forward to the next one.
I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I have read a few books before this one that had Banshees but this is the first to who did not have the voice to cry. That made the story unique from the get go. The fast that Aleah is only half banshee and half human make this interesting. That is when a vampire comes to her for help to get rouge vampires. There was some things a little off when Luc almost drains her once she has gone to sleep. The details in the story are vivid, but the pace of the book was a little off for me.
I love when we get a mix of paranormal in a story. This one has a sweet half banshee. Aleah only knows a little about the paranormal world. They aren’t a secret to the world of humans and an Accord had been created to protect all. But when a vampire comes knocking on her door her life of quiet will soon change. Can she trust any vampire when she hates and fears them all? The story is the first in the series and helps us understand the world they live in. We meet a few characters. There is also a mysterious evil that is killing innocent. The story has danger and also some heat.
Aleah and Luc’s stories are very interesting. I loved reading about the Fae and Vampires, two of my fav paranormal types of species. I do feel like Jen missed an opportunity to explain how her mother was able to have a child while Aleah could not. Other than that, I feel like a whole story was told and was not too high fantasy for my liking. She made a point to focus on the characters and not the world around them which I appreciated. Glad it had a stand alone ending to it, as well as a touch of humor. It was a fun read for sure.
