This story was okay. It has a talking ragdoll cat who is really cute and smart. I will read more stories in this series, in the future.

I kept flip-flopping between giving this three or four stars, but in the end decided to be nice and go for four.

Surprisingly, despite the juvenile writing that sounds more like a friend casually telling me this story as opposed to actually writing it....it passes. I will say that the writing was distracting at first and almost had me DNFing it after the first chapter, but the main character, Hannah, seemed likeable enough, and once she got to talking to her cat, Razzy...yeah, that's what sold it to me to continue.

Razzy is the best. The entire time throughout the mystery, I was just whispering to Hannah: use the cat, use the cat, use the CAT. Because, while Hannah's suddenly being able to understand cats is never really explained, it is a neat-o addition to the plot, and I did like how to Razzy, Hannah's her "Mama", which just makes their relationship all the cuter!

The romance plot itself was also really cute with Ben. He's the mandatory detective character that cozy mysteries need, but what I really liked about this character is that he has a cat as well. Ahem, so far there are no indications that he can understand cats or anything else either, but I just think it's something unique, in that I haven't seen a detective / masculine lead character have a cat yet--usually it's dogs. So...yeah, definitely a cat lover's mojo here, and Ben's cat's name is Gus, which is also freaking adorable!

As for the mystery itself, it was also pretty good to keep the story going; but, for a book that's technically a bit shorter, I did appreciate how appropriate time was given to the whole cat-talking element of it. In future books of the series--which, yes, I DO plan to read, this is fun--I imagine that it'll be given less space as we the readers will be used to it by that point, but nevertheless I felt the balance was good.

So...this is a first to me to actually get into a series where the writing is so casual, but the author does put a certain heart into the story that makes me think that yes, she really DOES want to share the stories of these characters, and not just to write something and get it out there for a quick buck.

Therefore, with Kindle Unlimited at my disposal for this...here I come, rest of the series!

For me this book was actually somewhere between "okay" and "liked it" so I rounded up. The characters were likable enough and the writing at least crisp and sometimes witty. The premise works for me, although for some it would be far too fanciful. The greatest problem I had was the absence of atmosphere and sense of place. I love a good atmospheric setting and I didn't get that with this book. Still, it's not bad, especially since it is available as a Kindle unlimited selection.

This was a pretty good read. This was my first time reading this author. Hannah Murphy yearns for a real news story. But after a strange migraine results in an unexpected ability to talk to her cat, she must keep the kitty-communication skills a secret if she wants to advance from fluff pieces to covering felonies. And when she literally trips over a slain body, she’s shocked her feline companion is the best partner to crack the case. The Detective on the case Ben a new transfer to the department and he doesn't like reporters but Hannah proves herself to him by not reporting everything and he softens to her. This was a good read with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

I enjoyed this author's style so much in the first Escape from Reality mystery that I knew I'd want to try this series as well, and I absolutely loved this first book! Razzy Cat won me over paws down. Who wouldn't love to have a sweet cat that could now talk?

The mystery was really good and kept me guessing all the way. Hannah was a great main character and probably because of her journalism background, she was able to keep her head at times when most would have lost it. I liked that she earned the respect of Ben, the detective who never had a good experience with reporters before. Hannah had integrity, and it was great that he gave her a chance to prove it-actually she pretty much insisted on being given said chance. I'm really anxious to read the next book whenever it comes available. Great KU borrow!

Wow. I wasn't expecting this.

This book was a referral from Amazon. The last few books I've read were okay. Nothing special. So I downloaded this book with minimal expectation. I loved it. The main character wasn't mad at the world and is likeable. The writing is crisp and excellent. The author took an old plot and made it her own. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Short, sweet, too the point and really cute with the talking cat and hiding romance. This little mystery is an easy read but also a good one.

Hannah Murphy is a 'fluff' reporter for a small-town newspaper, and has been waiting forever to write what she considers the hard stories. She's surprised when her editor calls her into his office and tells her that the next big story that breaks will be hers. Thrilled, she wants to celebrate with her friend Ashley, but is starting to get a raging headache and decides to go home and just spend the evening quietly with her Ragdoll cat, Razzy.

When Hannah wakes up in the park across the street from her apartment building, she thinks she's in a dream. Especially when the person calling out to her as 'mama' is her cat. Convinced she's dreaming, she heads back to her apartment but not before stumbling over a dead man. Once she realizes this is no dream, she calls the police, and that's where her problems begin. Now, she has to convince the detective she didn't kill the man, write a story about it, and oh, yeah, deal with the fact that her cat can talk to her...

Let me first say that I don't usually read stories about the paranormal. I don't care for witches, vampires, and the like; (although I am into ghosts); so ordinarily I wouldn't have picked this up. But I am a sucker for cats, so I'm glad I did. This is a very good first-in-a-series book, and actually it's rather believable. If one could talk your cat, you might actually do it.

The fact that Hannah not only talks to Razzy, but finds out what she does all day when Hannah's gone is rather funny. And that Razzy wants to help her in her investigation of the murder is interesting in itself.

The only thing that bothered me is the fact that the detective, Ben, wants to date Hannah and is willing to do so in an ongoing investigation, even if she isn't suspected of the murder. That, in my opinion, should wait until he's free and clear, so his investigation isn't tainted. But it didn't really spoil the story at all, so there's that.

I'm not going to say anything else about the book, because I don't want to spoil the story for anyone else. I will say that there are plenty of suspects and any number of people who could have wanted the man dead, and Hannah isn't shy about finding and questioning them. When the ending comes it's all gathered together nicely and leaves us waiting for the next in the series to see where Hannah goes next; and I love Razzy. Recommended.

I was given an advance copy from the author but this in no way influenced my review.

The Body in the Park: A Razzy Cat Cozy Mystery Series #1
by Courtney McFarlin

I received a copy from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Hannah Murphy lives and works in Golden Hills, Colorado with her Ragdoll cat, Razzy and works as a journalist. She is used to being handed out fluff pieces to cover for the newspaper having held her current position for about 2 years since graduating. Hannah dreams of more, she wants to make a name for herself as a “ hard news “ reporter but being a fairly new face plus being female means she is usually at the bottom of the pile when it comes to the juicy news and the juicy news is what she wants!

Hannah receives a phone call from her editor, Tom Anderson, who finally recognises her determined hard work and promises her the next big story. At the end of a typical hard-working week she has the onset of a killer migraine complete with all the extras. She falls into bed and passes out...only to awake around 1am still wearing her pyjama pants in a park not far from where she lives. If that isn't strange enough, Razzy her cat appears and suddenly can talk?! Or she can now understand her cat and the icing on the cake is the accidental tripping over a dead body as she attempts to return to her apartment...just what the heck is going on?

This is an exciting cozy mystery as Hannah tries to figure out where this new “ gift “ came from and more importantly, what was she supposed to do with it? Was she imagining it? Had she gone crazy as all these thoughts and more run through her head. The handsome Detective Walsh is in charge of the case and Hannah has to quickly think of a believable excuse as to why she is barefoot, wearing pyjamas in the middle of park at that time in a morning. So Hannah does what she knows best as the story is hers, and begins her own research and investigation of the victim.

One of my favourite phrases from the book is “ Pouring my heart out on paper was easy, but getting three words from my brain to my tongue usually resulted in a traffic jam and then a nasty pile-up along the way. “ I will definitely be looking out for more of Razzy.

A new to me author of cozy mystery, my favourite genre at the moment. This is the 1st book in the series.

Hannah is a reporter on a small paper in Golden Hills, Colorado; as she's a relative newbie, she's given the fluff pieces, but she's worked there 2 years and the editor wants to give her a chance. After suffering a nasty migraine, she wakes in the local park, with her cat, Razzy, by her side, who she can now understand! Whilst walking home, she stumbles across a body, her first break on a big story!

The Detective on the case, Ben, a new transfer himself, is pretty disparaging about reporters, but when she proves herself by not reporting everything, he softens, could there be romance on the cards? Why did her leave his old precinct in California?

When Hannah gets herself in hot water, will she live to write another story?

This was a good read, humourous when Hannah is conversing with Razzy. It's a good cozy mystery, and as this book sets the scene to the series, the books are best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters and series.

I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Hannah Murphy is a young reporter who is anxious to be given the opportunity to report "real news". One day she experiences a terrible migraine and is shocked to discover that she can now talk to her cat, Razzy.

Not only does Razzy help her investigate a murder, but when Hannah is abducted by the killer, Razzy sends a text to the handsome policeman that Hannah is getting friendly with, and gives him Hannah's location by using the "Find my Phone" app and sending Ben the co-ordinates.

Hannah finds that she cannot talk to the killer's pug dog, but she is able to speak with Gus, the cop's cat. I can see a romance here between Gus and Razzy. LOL. When she finally tells cop Ben her secret, he is initially shocked and thinks she is crazy, but by the end of the book he tells her they should talk over dinner.

Who wouldn't love a cat who can not only talk but also text. When Hannah asks her what she does all day she replies that she reads a lot on Hannah's ipad but is careful not to download books that Hannah would have to pay for. She later asks Hannah if she can purchase Kindle Unlimited (not by name) so that she can download unlimited books for a monthly fee.

Very cute book!

Compelling Review:
Courtney McFarlin’s The Body in the Park is a charming and witty entry into the cozy mystery genre, blending laugh out loud humor with a delightfully quirky twist: a cat who can talk. At its heart is Hannah Murphy, a reporter desperate for a real story, who suddenly finds herself investigating murder with her feline companion, Razzy, as the most unlikely consultant.

McFarlin masterfully balances the cozy comforts of small town sleuthing with a refreshingly original concept. Hannah is relatable, ambitious, and sometimes hilariously over her head, while Razzy steals every scene with his sharp observations and feline sass. Their unlikely partnership infuses the book with both warmth and comic brilliance.

What sets The Body in the Park apart from other cozies is its perfect mix of intrigue, banter, and heart. The murder mystery itself is cleverly plotted, with enough twists to keep readers guessing, while the chemistry between Hannah, Razzy, and even the cantankerous detective adds layers of fun. This is a story for anyone who loves a cozy escape filled with humor, charm, and a whisker of magic.

Just go with it.

Hannah is one tiny reporter with a big secret. She goes to bed with a horrible headache and wakes up able to talk to and understand everything her Ragdoll cat, Razzy, says. And she's way smarter than Hannah thought; she knows Shakespeare, she lets Hannah know that she'd really like a subscription to read more books, she's learning to text and she can tell if someone is lying or telling the truth just by how they smell. Now who, at one time or another, hasn't wished that they could talk to their pets? I imagine Hugh Lofting must have wished that way back when he wrote Dr. Dolittle. Hannah finds out the answer to that question when she stumbles over a dead body in the neighborhood park and Razzy is instrumental in helping her find the killer. I like Hannah, I love Razzy (who calls Hannah "Mama" - I always tell my dogs "mama loves you", so I won't judge). The writing is fun and I blazed right through this book, interested in the story the entire way through. I will continue reading this series because it's smart, snappy and just plain fun.

I enjoyed this book, especially the talking cat! Unfortunately, the author uses the one plot device I hate - the main female character, usually enamored of the main police officer, tries to solve the murder mystery on her own while endangering the official investigation and herself. I will read the next one to see if it uses a different plot device.

Amazon synopsis:

I don't usually fall in love with the first book in a series, but I loved everything about this book. OK, I don't love the budding romance, but it seems to be a vital part of cozy mysteries. Fortunately, it's getting off to a bit of a rocky start. I'll just have to hope it doesn't get too mushy too fast. But why am I focusing on the only thing I didn't like. I loved Razzy! I loved the mystic who is helping guide Hannah through the mysteries of her new found ability to hear her cat speaking to her. I love that her cat is so smart and so resourceful. Did I mention that I love Razzy? I like the idea that she is a reporter. That gives her a reason to be involved in solving mysteries. I even like her gravely voiced grumpy boss. I'm on the fence about her best friend. I like that she's supportive of Hannah but I would have preferred not to know why she came to work wearing sunglasses to hide the bags under her eyes.

I'm looking forward to continuing the series, so I hope the next book doesn't disappoint.

The Body in the Park is the first book in the new A Razzy Cat Cozy Mystery series. Hannah Murphy works in a newsroom working on fluffy stories when one night she finds herself in her pajamas and in the park with her cat and a dead body. This leads her to work a hard core story to discover who the person was, who murdered him and meet a handsome detective along the way. Join Hannah and Razzy as they uncover the clues to crack the case.

This is a fast-moving book that will keep you on your toes. What a wonderful read, I enjoyed the story line and the characters were fantastic. The plot is nice and twisty, the characters are interesting, and the pages practically turn themselves. I didn’t know who the murderer was until it was revealed. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next one. I highly recommend this book!

I received an ARC, but would have bought this book any way and this did not influence my review, except to make me actually write it up.

This book was great fun. Hannah, a young reporter on the ‘fluff’ beat, goes to bed with a headache and is awakened by a voice calling Mama? Mama! She realizes she is in a park in the middle of the night.

The voice she heard, which she thought was a lost child is her Ragdoll cat, Razzy! That’s right, she understands what her cat is saying.

While Razzy is leading her home through the park, Hannah trips over a body. Thus begins her adventures in solving a murder.

Razzy is part spoiled child, part naggy mother and all smart cat with an attitude.

Good clean deadly fun or never take your cat for a midnight stroll!

Having a difficult time sleeping, she heads out of her apartment , cat strolling along, to relax and enjoy the quiet and fragrance of the night time park behind her home. She doesn't think about her sleep pants and tank top until she trips over a body and realizes people are going to see her pink with white cats fuzzy pants.
The first of the cozy mysteries I've read by this author, it is a pleasure and full of good guys, and girls, bad guys, and girls, and enough action to keep you awake into the wee hours. Curl up and enjoy.

Razzy the Cat and Hannah the Reporter

Hannah goes to sleep and awakens in the park hearing someone calling her. She comes to, not knowing why she is in the park and how she got there. Then she realizes it is her cat talking to her -- and she can understand Razzy! When she gets up to go back to her apartment, she falls over a dead body. She calls the police and meets Detective Ben Walsh, a new man in town. They both work on whodunit. They also get to know each other. It's a humorous story, and I cannot wait for the next one.

This is the first in the series. The main character is Hannah and her cat Razzy. Hannah is a reporter for a paper and wants to write the hard stories. She ends up tripping over a dead body and suddenly she is writing the hard story. At the same time she realizes she can now understand her cat, for that matter all cats. As she tries to follow the leads in the story, she also starts a relationship with the cop in charge. Then everything seems to go wrong and she is kidnapped and it looks like she is also going to be killed. Can she figure her way out of this ? Can Razzy help her ?

A talking cat?

Hannah Murphy discovers that she can understand cat language and this deepens the relationship between her cat Razzy and her. Nothing earth shattering comes from this although the cat does assist in solving the mystery of the body in the park. The story is easy to read with likeable, fairly well developed characters, the identity of the murderer took me by surprise because those
characters were not striking.
Try it, you will like it especially if you like cats, although I really cannot imagine a cat calling a human, 'mama'.

Mystery, Intrigue, Suspense, and a talking cat.

Hannah is a fluff reporter for the Post. She wants to do serious reporting and her editor decides to give her a chance. Hannah meets Ben the detective on a case. She goes home, exhausted she goes to bed, only to wake up in the Park in her Pajamas. She hears a little child calling MaMa. It's not a child it is her Cat. Running away from her cat, Hannah trips over a dead body and her life will never be the same again! I really liked the story line. It is well written and believable . I'm ready the next book, too.

So incredible! Glad I decided to start this series!

Such a delightful and entertaining series! Razzy is definitely my favorite character. She's just the sweetest kitty. She and Hannah have a right and wonderful bond! Loved this story line and the other characters were very interesting. I liked the other cat, Gus, also. This is another phenomenal series I'll most definitely continue to read!!

Ever wish you could talk to your car or dog?

Hannah developed the ability to understand what her cat was saying! That makes the story that much more interesting, I think it would be fun to be able to know what animals were saying or thinking. I really enjoyed reading this book, the different twists and turns it took made it a fun read while still keeping me in suspense! I highly recommend this to anyone that likes mystery books.

Refreshing Read

I gave this series a try just to have something new to read. I am pleasantly surprised. It is refreshing to read something that isn't full of swearing, sex and violence. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick and fun story. My granddaughter would get a kick out of Razzy. She would probably have the crime solved after the first couple chapters.

Quick, fun read. It's a murder mystery with a talking cat as part of the crime-solving team.

4 stars instead of 5 because the anthropomorphism was rampant (why not just let the cat be a cat?), and some of the New Age-y stuff was weird and perhaps unnecessary. I mean, you already have a talking cat in the book. Why do you have to throw in glowing, levitating crystals too?

Then again, why not?

Talking to Razzy

A well crafted murder mystery, I came up with one of the guilty just before the reveal.
Hannah goes sleep walking and stumbles over a murder victim in the park. She has just had one shock, her cat, Razzy, has followed her to the park and Hannah found she can understand Razzy. The two of them, reporter and cat, help the police solve the crime.
Believable characters, a sweet cat, a bit of romance round out this tale.
