I love fantasy, adventure, and magic. More than that, I adore my readers.

My books are written to entertain -- fantasy adventures filled with compelling characters, spectacular magic, thrilling action, constant intrigue, and a sense of discovery. I equate them to the "Marvel Movie" version of fiction, intended to be a fun escape.

I would love to have you join me and my quirky characters for one outrageous adventure after another. With over a million published words, my author journey has just begun.

Best wishes,
Jeff

The fabulous beginning of an adventure 'that would see a realm destroyed, hope lost, a world ended... and another reborn.'

Wizardoms: God King Rising is the first book of Fall of Wizardoms, a new series taking place after the events of Fate of Wizardoms saga.

You don't necessarily HAVE to read the Fate of Wizardoms Saga to be able to fully enjoy this book here. The author makes sure even new readers quickly find their footing and get their bearings in this tale. But you're in for a treat if you've already read it, just like me.

Old characters we've already grown to love and new ones just as great, will sweep you into an adventure full of action, intrigue, humor, magic, and twists you can't possibly see coming. And all of it topped with Jeffrey Kohanek's trademark witty banter and solid dose of snark.

Two queens in a realm left without guidance after the death of their gods and Wizard Lords.
One ruling by fear, her citizens laboring to fund the lavish lifestyle of the wizard class. The other with justice and compassion, earning her the love of her subjects...and the enmity of her wizard peers.
And both of them will die. Well, not unless a certain rogue has something to say about it. :D

Conspiracies and assassins lurking in every shadow, scheming wizards who will stop at nothing to claim a crown, a race intent to reclaim their rightful place, a secret rebellion and a hero of the people, an ingenious magic system, fighting, revenge, monsters, wild chases and daring by a hair's breadth escapes. This book has it all! Plus one badass awesome pirate lady one can't help but love!

There is something about Jeffrey L. Kohanek's writing that makes you forget the world around you, and get lost within the pages of his tale. And this book here is no exception.

You don't believe me?
Go ahead and give it a try.
I guarantee you won't regret it.

Happy reading everyone
and always

Jeffrey Kohanek's GOD KING RISING is an entertaining jaunt into a world of sword and sorcery that gave me some of the same feels as when I devoured Dragonlance books as a young fantasy reader. Nothing incredibly complex, which can be a good thing every once in a while, given the amount of densely plotted fantasy these days. This story in particular sets up the events that will follow in upcoming volumes quite nicely as we are introduced to some of the history and characters in the opening chapters.

For a fairly short book this one had a good deal of action that took place. The battle scenes were written quite well and the blood and guts does get vividly described in some passages. The idea of two queens with very different personalities, goals, and motivations was a really neat concept and one that I haven't read much. So that slight air of originality helped my enjoyment of the book as their stories are told and each are confronted with scheming and manipulation from both within their courts and without.

Another refreshing aspect to this book and something that was great to see was that there were a lot of female characters who played huge roles. As someone who gets annoyed at seeing an almost completely male-dominated dramatis personae in some books, it heartened me greatly to be able to read a story that is more representative and diverse and where the heroes (and badass villains) are primarily women.

My only real sticking point was what I thought was the lack of character development and the fact that much of the book felt like I was getting an awesome depiction of the action, but with maybe some depth missing that would have had me a little more invested. The world-building was also good but not to the level that I would have hoped for as much of the descriptions of place are kind of skimmed over in an effort to get back to the action.

That being said, I did really enjoy this book and for most of it I was totally sucked in. If you are looking for a read that is fast-paced, filled with lots of escapes and battles, and gives you a Terry Brooks vibe with a dash of Dragonlance thrown into the mix, then you will likely find GOD KING RISING your cup of tea. An entertaining escapist fantasy book that intrigued me to want to pick up the next in this series. Definitely give this one a go, as it will delight many fantasy readers who aren't interested in reading doorstopper tomes with hundreds of characters and houses to keep track of.

*Like always my reviews may contain spoilers*

When I signed up to review God King Rising I did not realize that it was the first book in a new series set in the same world as a previous series by Jeffrey L. Kohanek . This book seems it takes places after the events of the other series. But that is on me. The author did a great job with filling in the blanks. I am just kicking myself that I didn't realize it because I'm odd like that. With that being said I still gave it a 4 stars, a low 4 but still 4.

*My rating and review doesn't reflect that I hadn't read the previous books, let that be known.*

God King Rising is a multi pov fantasy, the gods are dead and the Wizards are ruling without their aid. Clerics seem to be taking this hard with many are turning to suicide as they have no purpose in life. A revolution is on the rise in one of the Wizardoms. A group wants to take down one of the queen as she is horrible and the people deserve better at least that is what Lang believes or is he just a pawn in something bigger. Then there is the other queen who seems to be liked and is to be married, her life is also in danger. Many attempts seem to be made on her because another Wizard wants to take her place. With the backing of the Drow, who want to seem to want to become the next gods and have other plans for humanity.

I am assuming that the cast in this book are mostly the same group from the earlier series Fate of Wizardoms , which I now NEED to read. While not knowing the events of the earlier books didn't take away my enjoyment of this book and yes the author did fill in some blanks, I would have enjoyed it more if I had read them. Because it is clear that these characters played major roles in the events that lead to this book even being created.

I enjoyed the idea of Wizards being the rulers, rather then just a regular king/queen. Normally it's the wizard/mage who is the aid and councilor of the throne. If they are good that is. But with the gods being dead and them not getting some of the same abilities, their rule seems to to be pointless as from what I gather they have been able to rule and live much longer with the aid of the gods.

The magic system is gendered, males seem to have the battle magic and more strength. Females don't seem to poses the same albites, not saying they can't hold their own, we do have a queen tossing a fireball. But women tend to be more healing and illusion magic.

I do have a some issues, which to others might not be a big deal but for me it stood out, from page one. I'm not to keen on how women are described in the book. Describing a women at the 36 to be "advancing years and saying her breasts had succumbed to gravity" while talking about men older not the same light. I do however like that there are more women in this world and they seem to have important roles but the characters can be worked on a little bit, mostly in the description of them. Not all books are perfect. The author however does a wonderful job of placing you in the story. He describes the rooms and world with enough details to fully emerge you. So the worldbuilding is great.

Favorite characters:

Lang

Jerrell

Captain Harlequin (I would like to know more about the Queen of the Shoals)

Loggadon (who I hope there is more of either in future books or previous, who is also the reason that I bumped the book up to 4 stars a) a dwarf and I love when my fantasy books feature dwarves and b) a reading book loving dwarf)

God King Rising is intriguing with conspiracies', rebellion, some romance, magic, elves and dwarves. A quick read with an ending that will make you want to pick the next book, or if you are like me all the previous ones too.

It is very clear that Jeffrey L. Kohanek knows what he is doing with his books, I sense a well thought out storyline and world. I feel he knows his endgame and there will much much more in store for his characters and us the readers. I will enjoy the ride.

By the time my Fate of Wizardoms series ended, world-altering events had taken place. Some characters died, while others stood triumphant. The events concluding the story were sure to greatly impact the Eight Wizardoms, which offered a wonderful platform for a new tale in the same world. At the same time, I was unwilling to say goodbye to the characters I had grown to love (or hate). Thus, I felt compelled to craft a sequel series. Thankfully, my readers wanted more as well.

Wizardoms: God King Rising is the first book in the Fall of Wizardoms epic, a direct sequel series to A Contest of Gods, the last book in the Fate of Wizardoms saga.

Wizardoms God King Rising by Jeffrey L. Kohanek

Readers can expect more action, intrigue, humor, magic, and twists as the Eight Wizardoms draw toward a spectacular, yet devastating, end. New characters join beloved ones from the prior series. If you are wondering: Yes, I do love witty banter (especially between couples), and I find it impossible not to include a solid dose of snark.

As of this writing, God King Rising is available for preorder and will soon be in the hands of eager readers. Five more books will follow, concluding the series by the end of 2021. I hope you will join me for this thrilling adventure.

God King Rising, the first book in Jeffrey’s latest series, was a fun read. It follows multiple storylines in a world shattered by the death of its gods, whose power used to support wizard kings (a wizardom is like a kingdom). The societies are reassessing their leadership, rearranging their power structures and governments, and some new factions and leaders are seeing opportunities to seize power following all the upheaval. As we shift from storyline to storyline, we see different perspectives on these events, from a pirate queen and her warrior companion fleeing a sinister plot, to the plotters themselves, to a thief-turned-administrator betrothed to a newly-crowned benevolent queen, to a haughty wizardess overseeing a cruel and stratified society, one threatened by those she oppresses. There is a lot going on here.

I got some sense of Jeff’s world as the characters traveled through it, although that impression left me realizing that there’s even more complexity beyond what I saw. The bulk of the action takes place in four main cities or towns, although there are other locations along the way. These towns each have a society, a culture, a government, trade goods, and industries. Even though they differ, they’re often tied up in the fading of the wizards’ power and the upheaval of the recent death of the gods. There’s a good bit of description of these cities, including clothes, architecture, military factions, and a bit of the society, but not so much it’s overwhelming.

Much of the action in the book is cinematic. There are fights, tremendous feats of derring-do, magic spells, poisons, curses, disguises, escapes, schemes, even a carriage chase. The action is fast paced. The characters are clear about their goals and their limitations, and you can follow them as they pursue their goals (and as their circumstances change). There’s a little bit of the superhero in some of the characters, which is fine - they’re the heroes of the story, after all, and it’s fun that they’re quite capable (often seemingly the best in the world) at what they do. This quality and this pacing doesn’t always leave time for introspection or for getting to know the characters, although we do get deep into some of them, and I suspect it’s a deliberate tradeoff to elevate the action and adventure parts. Something is nearly always happening.

With those powerful characters and their skills, the story sometimes seems a little like a very solid RPG campaign, with a highlighted set of diverse heroes facing a series of challenges and quests along the way. In each section, the focus never shifts from the party - we’re always following what they’re doing and thinking and planning. Of course, with so many perspective characters, it’s more like a bunch of RPG campaigns blended into each other.

This RPG impression I got was furthered by other RPG-style elements. The characters mostly seem to have a class they fall into - thief, sorcerer, wizard, warrior - with a related set of skills. There are multiple magic items of power that play a role in the story, with many characters relying on those items for their power, for protection, or to augment their fighting style. There are some familiar races from D&D - dark elves, regular elves, dwarfs (never dwarves, although either plural is fine, I now know). I’ve been playing D&D since 1980, so this all felt quite familiar and comfortable for me.

The separate storylines blend as the characters interact, and there are several exciting set-piece scenes along with some good climaxes. The storylines all come to resolutions, and while these resolutions are satisfying, it’s clear that many of them are not final, and the adventures will continue in the future books.

God King Rising is the first novel I've read by Jeffrey L. Kohanek and it was certainly a wild ride. I'm highly tempted to go back and read the Fate of Wizardoms before moving on further with this series as it's clearly a follow on series. Whilst it's written in such a way to make it very easy to follow, I couldn't help but feel like I was missing reference points and previous story arcs that would have made this a far more fulfilling read.

Even without having read the previous series, this has a well developed and multi-faceted world. Told from multiple perspectives, you get to see how the world has changed now the gods have died. The wizards are still in charge, but there is trouble on the horizon and various factions want to shake up the existing order of the world through conspiracy, assassination and revolution. Cleverly though, the two sides of the wizards rule are shown well; with one ruler being benevolent and working for the good of her people and the other rules through fear and terror. Both are equally in the way of the Drow, the dark elves who have set their eyes on the thrones.

And populating this fully realised world are some fantastic characters who get pulled into various scrapes and find themselves on the wrong side of the conspiracy. Moving from one near catastrophe to another, our band of misfit hero's (how else would you describe a queen, a thief, a pirate and a periodically drunken berserker?) really come to life on the page. Again, I think I was missing something through not having read the previous series, but I didn't really need to in order for these characters to come to life.

This is an epic quest full of action, adventure and conspiracy. I strongly suspect that it would be best to read the initial series first, but even so this works as the beginning of a standalone series.

I was granted complimentary access to God King Rising as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with Storytellers on Tour. Thank you to all those involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.

God King Rising is a surprisingly short book for the epic fantasy subgenre, but man does it pack a punch! This book is full of edge-of-your-seat cinematic action that will not let you even think of feeling bored. Kohanek is a seasoned author in the genre, and it shows.

This world is beautifully crafted, and although I haven't read his previous series that this one spins off of, I do feel like I got enough descriptions and explanations to understand the setting just fine. My tripping point is character development in between all the action. Having not read that prior series I'm not sure who's an established character and who's new, but I do feel like some of these characters had their big moments in another book and this is just another blip on their life timelines after their personal big story moment.

Overall this is a promising start to what sounds like a great new series, and I do recommend this book to all fans of the genre.

A very intriguing first book in a new series in the Wizardoms setting. Across the Empire the Gods have gone and the Wizard Lords have all fallen to the dark Lord Urvadan, but other wizards have tried to gain power and these are frivolous and petty and the common people are getting fed up with being treated badly and a revolution seems to be arising. However this is being instigated by yet another power which hopes to rise and dominate the populace. The Drow who had been exiled from their home beneath the mountain are out to gain power, Xavan believes that the Drow are better than humans and deserve to rule, thus sends Trenadol out to convert people to their cause. Harlequin and Crusser on the other hand know that the Drow are up to no good and they are out to expose them. Two Queens are reigning, one is evil and Narine is good, but both have attempts on their lives made by yet another power hungry wizard. So can Jace, the charlatan, keep his beloved safe? He has eyes and ears everywhere and will do anything to protect his wife and his queen. Big changes are happening all over the Empire and even the Seers who have never left the hidden city of Kelmar are forced to do so and venture forth. The Drow are adamant that though their plans are failing they will not give up on sowing chaos leading to their ruling of mankind. I love this amazing first book in the Fall of Wizardoms, the betrayals by the power hungry wizards, the people's uprising and the new human King, and I am dying to follow the path Jace and Nerine will now be forced to follow. I look forward to book 2 in this epic and thrilling series.

The start of a new fantastic series!

Author Jeffrey Kohanek never fails his readers! This first book is daring, action packed and full of intrigue, attempted assassinations, conflict, magic, and extremely appealing characters. I love that some characters from the first series are here and that we are introduced to some new characters. Some are good and some are very very bad! What a roller coaster ride, and total entertainment. This author knows how to keep me on the edge of my seat! Don't miss out because this is a fantastic book!

What a great start and continuation of our favourite Wizard's Saga! The god's are dead and the wizards who used the power of Devotion gone with them. Greed and power grabbing are the order of the day. The ambitious take advantage of the power vacuum and set in motion plans to overtake the world. Jace and Narine, together with their friends, go into hiding to try unravel the truth of who is behind these plots. Yet another prophecy comes to light and they are once again sucked in. Love the character's, love the way the plot unravels and how they are pushed to the limit, both physically and emotionally. One can't help but root for them. Looking forward to reading how they fare! Snarky characters like Harlequin re surface, she's great fun! Fast paced, well written and worth reading. Truly compelling reading, exciting, emotional and thrilling. Highly Recommended

This is my first book by Jeffrey L. Kohanek and I'm sure this won't be the last. Action-packed and full of unexpected twists and turns, God King Rising is an exhilarating start of a new series!

Plotwise, it was a solid blend of magic, action, mystery and a dash of romance. I enjoyed the multiple narratives and subplots, and how these subplots came together to an electrifying climax. The battle scenes were on point and bloody. It was very well-paced and could be read in one sitting because it immediately grabbed your attention from the first page until the end. The prose was simple and very easy to follow. Moreover, the descriptions were precise and distinct.

The best thing that I liked here was definitely there were a lot of female characters who had played huge roles. Here we had queens, pirates, heroines, as well as villains. Each had interesting and memorable personalities. Also, the diversity of characters was very prominent.

Although the author made sure that readers don't necessarily have to read the Fate of Wizardoms Saga, the only minor issue that I had was I was a little confused at first with its world building and magic system. Eventually, I found my footing and understand the history and background. I'm very intrigued about the events before this book, I'll definitely read the previous series to fully enjoy the world of this novel.

Overall, I recommend this novel. It has intriguing plot, diverse characters, and full of action. 4.25/5 stars!

A big thanks to Storytellers on Tours for the review copy!

Even though this is a spin off series, you won't necessarily miss anything. This book does provide you a sort of summary about the original series. The gods are dead and the wizards are taking the thrones. They are abusing the power and authority, and torturing the people. The changes in the power structure is affecting the society. A prophecy has been made and it's time. Since the events of Fall of Wizardoms takes place after the Fate of wizardoms series some of the characters in this book might be familiar to those who have read the Fate of the Wizardoms.
•I loved all the characters and I can't really pick a favorite. While they have their differences, they all wonderfully complete each other. A pirate queen and a thief - turned - chancellor betrothed to the queen are the main characters. Landish, the chancellor, deserves a special credit for his "brains".
•Since this is a world of wizards, you are in for a fun ride of intense magic. The eight wizardoms the author has the right amount of crazy. It's perfectly chaotic.
•There's multiple story lines and multiple povs but they all converge towards the end. The writing is beautiful. They are heroes in this story, definitely. But they are not over normal heroes. They are almost anti-heroes, if I may. And that's what I particularly liked about this book. If you like magic and wizards, then this is definitely for you.

Adventure Fantasy Assassins for +17 Readers

*** Parents: Due to content level this series would probably be in the R range for movies. While the bad language was mild, there was pretty descriptive gore in the action scenes, lots of sexualized scenes and content throughout- naked bodies, descriptions of breasts, "flags raising" and being grabbed, groping, attempted rape, mentions of horing, and being used for pleasure.

Warnings aside this was an action packed and fun adventure that deals with magicians, elves, drow, pirates and assassins. There's intrigue with twists and turns that keep you highly engaged in the story. Those that like epic fantasy, like a mix of The Lord of the Rings and the tv show Reign will love this book. It's definitely geared towards a more adult crowd and lots of fun.

The narrator did a great job with all the voice differentiation and acting, although I did have to speed it up to 1.3 x speed because it just felt a little slow.

A great start to another excellent series by Jeffery Kohanek. Whether you enjoy print or audio (narrated by Travis Baldree and it doesn't get much better), you’ll love the first in the series. Overall an excellent story, great characters you want to win and lose, and a steady plot. I look forward to the next in the series!

This is the first of Jeffrey's books I read. It's fabulous.

Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles.

Oh, wait, that's Princess Bride. Still. All of those things definitely apply to this book as well.

The description speaks of two queens. One is a truly good person. She wants to change the kingdom she rules for the better, even at the expense of herself and her caste. She also really wants to get married. And she's annoyed with the multiple assassination attempts that threaten those plans. (We'd like her to be a little more concerned with living, but that's for her fiance to worry about.) The other queen is the opposite, content to exploit the kingdom if it means she and her own kind are comfortable. It's repulsive, really. But who can fight against her magic? As if that's not enough fun, there's an organization that is plotting something, and doing some rather unethical things to get it...but will they succeed? A certain pirate and her warrior friend are determined to block them at every turn. The suspense is killing me. And I've already read the book twice!

Bias warning: I did edit this book.
Unbiased response to bias warning: I would have read it anyway and wrote the review because I liked it so much.

A great start to a new series in one of my favorite worlds. Two Queens are reigning, one is evil and one is good, but both have attempts on their lives made by yet another power hungry wizard. Will they survive or will they die?

I have followed the adventures of Jace and Nadine through the other series, and I am so excited to keep following their journey.

Our old friends from Fate of Wizardoms are back on the scene in God King Rising. They are facing a new threat, perhaps more than one. The gods are dead. There is a new power struggle for ruling the wizardoms. Who is going to try and take the place of the gods? Will they succeed?

I did find a few of the scene changes jarring. I also wish the bad guys weren't the bad guys, because they are so interesting.

I received an audiobook code from the author. Travis Baldree is a seasoned narrator and fun to listen to. He does the different voices so well. I never had to wonder who was speaking.

The End is Nigh

Absolutely awesome, after the last series and the fall of the Gods and the Dark Lord, there is new darkness and its on the rise. The drow are making a play for pure domination, when the drow confront the human wizard Chandren to make their claim, he is murdered in the process. Harlequin an ex pirate investigates and discovers its all a lie, with order agent's on her heels she escapes with her friend and lover Husser on her ship to unveil a plot that could bring about the end for the eight wizardoms and their wizard rulers, Our heroes from the last series are back and getting them selves into all sorts of trouble. This has it all, from immense magic, assassins, rebellions, murder plots and the characters are brilliant. Fast paced, dark, grim and bloody. The narrator Travis Baldree is back and gives an excellent preformence, brings the story to another level, highly recommended...😁

I don't even know how to start. Such a great story with awesome characters. This author has my full attention with this series. The characters all have their own quirks. Some are serious, some are evil and some have a lot of snark in their attitude. Jace & Narine are getting married finally. But there is a plot to poison the queen or kill her if needed so a new evil can take over. The plot is discovered by Jace and he tries to get Narine to reconsider such a public affair. She refuses and says she will go on as planned. Jace has a tough job to make sure everything goes smoothly. That is my favorite thing about this character, he is very crafty & resourceful. I also love the way he can get to Narine. The sequence of events led to an awesome battle between good and evil. A choice to make whether to do the right thing or not. If you haven't started this series you should. If you love epic fantasy then you will love this series.
