The Fold it’s like the love child of The Martian and Red Dwarf – with a pinch of Star Trek thrown in for extra flavour!
Nick Adams grew up in a small village near Maidstone in Kent, England and right from an early age was a fervent NASA, space and Apollo fan. After watching the first moon landing in 1969 and the subsequent moon missions that followed, he discovered science fiction books and cut his teeth reading Asimov, E. E. Doc Smith and Alan Dean Foster. In more recent times, Andy Weir and Peter F Hamilton to name but two, have joined them on the bookshelves. After serving in the British Army for several years, Nick became a publican, managing and later owning his own village pubs for a number of years before moving to Brisbane in Australia where he began writing his own space opera, and the Fold series was born. In late 2018 he returned to the UK, where the next adventures in the series evolved, along with the ‘Bache Loftt’ spin-off series. Nick writes the kind of stories he would like to read. The Fold Series is set a little in the future and based around upcoming NASA technology. The series features normal everyday people put into extraordinary circumstances, with realistic reactions, humour and language. After all, nobody would say ‘oops’ if a 14km-long alien starship de-cloaked next to them. Head over to his website to sign up to the Reader Group, and Nick will personally keep you up to date with his bi-monthly newsletters about what novels he’s currently reading, cover reveals, book launch dates and general progress on his current project. Lastly, don't forget to leave a review if you enjoy the books. It only needs to be a few words and it helps spread the word about these exciting space opera stories. I sincerely hoped it would continue on forever. It’s the kind of escapist book we all need in our lives from time to time. Like a holiday in 360-odd pages.
Another enjoyable romp in this series of good old fashioned science fiction adventures. The strong points of this series continue. I love the main characters who are much more than the cyphers you get in some stories, the very British humour that surfaces in places, and the technology on show.
if it has any weaknesses it's the villains who return from the second book in the series, who are just a touch too pantomime in their evil, although they do come across better this time. The thing I'd say is the author relies on coincidences maybe a touch too much but it's not a big issue for me.
The way the book ends gave me the impression that the author had brought the series to an end with this volume, but I can only hope he doesn't because I enjoy these books so much they are a breath of fresh air, compared to the heavy-duty military clash of empires books that fill the market.
Thanks Nick another totally enjoyable yarn. I must admit I did have trouble putting it down and I wasn’t looking forward to it ending. The right amount of humour at the right time, some of the problem solving may have been far fetched but… it’s a big universe and you’ve got to get from A to B some how. And I’m guilty of looking forward to the next episode, maybe ‘Done and Dusted’ would be a good title…?
I normally don't buy books per say I'm on Amazon Prime and read their free books so that tells you how much I enjoyed this series because I had to buy the books and I did enjoy this series. The author did a fantastic job with all the characters, they were just so enjoyable. The story had no fillers in it which made so enjoyable to read. If you're looking for a really fun series this will do it for you.
Nick Adams has knocked it out of the park with his wonderful trilogy of Space adventures. Very sad he hasn’t written more about these characters but I will check his other books and expect they will be just as fast paced and detailed.
Before you read this one, please note it is the fourth book of a series – you will need to have read the earlier books or the characters, scenes, etc. won’t make much sense to you. This series had a lot of potential but has gone off the rails with high-school level humor, snarkiness of the characters, and just not-believable scenes that take away from the story. I wanted to quit reading about halfway through it but plowed ahead, with the false hope it could turn around and be the quite good story it could be.
Needless to say, I am done with the series and would not recommend this episode to other readers of the series.
Just finished book 4 and have already downloaded book 5 and will start it tomorrow, really enjoying this series and the group of characters is expanding.
