Lucía Ashta is the internationally top 20 bestselling author of young adult, new adult, and adult paranormal and urban fantasy books, including the series Magical Creatures Academy, Witches of Gales Haven, Smoky Mountain Pack, and Supernatural Bounty Hunter.
When Lucía isn't writing, she's reading, painting, or adventuring. Magical fantasy is her favorite, but the action, romance, and quirky characters are what keep her hooked on books.
Things get more and more complicated and intertwined as the story progresses (while staying completely follow-able) and we add some steam and spice, some details on the pack, more info on the hunters, and surprises from mages!
I really enjoy having most of the story told from Zasha and Quannah's points-of-view with some Gideon sprinkled in.
One thing I really appreciate about Gideon's POV is being able to see how he became a hunter and what that had meant in his life. Knowing what drives him creates a three-dimensional villain, and being there for some of the scenes in this book was really intense, but it allowed us to see how he processes things. And now I'm not going to say anything else so I avoid spoilers!
But the sparks between the main couple are undeniable and how they're drawn to each other is fantastically done!
In this book, Zasha took slowly but surely her place in the pack. The pack continued searching for Corin, the alpha of the pack, who has been kidnapped by Gideon and delivered to the Protectors of Humanity, a society which is supposed to protect humans against shifters. Zash and Quannah's relationship took a new turn😉 and it was for the best. I hate how Quannah behaved with Zasha. Now he's all infatuated and it's cute😍 Gideon got betrayed by the Society and it will be interesting reading about how he will deal with his world collapsing. There were some interesting plot twists in this book and it kept me entertained so it's gladly that I will read the last one😊
So damn good!!! 😍 ❤️ 🔥 OMG this book is so damn good!!!, it flows so smoothly, I couldn't stop reading, didn't want to, it sucked me into the story, I felt like I was right there with them!!! 🥰 Zasha and Quannah, love how they complete each other perfectly, how fate brought them together, even if the circumstances were not the best. Their bond will help them deal with what is coming next, and boy there are hard times just ahead 😳😩 Oh but they had so valuable help from some old beloved characters, it was such a nice surprise, love crossovers!!! 😍 Can't wait for the next book to release, this ending left me heart broken 😭 and with so many questions!!! 🤯🤨🤔
This is a fab second read. This is an exciting, intense and very dark read that sucked me in from the very start again! The storyline is growing and developing nicely as are the characters who are finding their way and discovering each other. There’s a slow build up in the romance department , a lot of sexual tension, there magic, action, threats to face and enemies to be defeated. I look forward to the next book!
I really like the characters in this story. The heroine is strong and make good decisions. The love interest respects the heroine, which rarely happens in mate books. My problem is that nothing is resolved in this book. We know what happens to the original alpha, but that is a mini plot. Nothing else is resolved. Nothing. No revenge happens. The same bad guys are still out there. This is why the lack of stars.
I really wanted to like this book but I didn't. I only rated it a three because I the first book. There should have been trigger warnings for the torture. The fact that after suffering so much he died was really disappointing and made it seem so unnecessary. The torture kind of ruined my enjoyment for the book. I had to skip around to get to the ending. I doubt I'll be reading the last one.
Zasha is learning to fight with the pack. Solo fighting she knows, and what weapons she's allowed during various matches. But she's never been part of a group outside her small family. She's making friends. She's also realizing that Quannah is very important to her. And he's quit saying that they can never be. But after returning from a raid, something happens inside her. It feels like magic fighting in her. Again.
Spoilers ahead. Ok, so short is key here. There's still a lot of action, a lot of moving parts to follow, but all fit inside a few amount of words. So much is thrown at you you don't realize what's missing until you hit that cliffhanger. *We see her sparring but we still aren't learning about the pack. What jobs do they hold? Do they exist outside the pack lands? I know they purchase some supplies, that means money. But where does it come from? *She roams Flaming Arrow a lot for someone who is supposed to excise her past. And she never does contact her uncles, but she walks that area enough word could definitely get back. *How does mate magic differ from wolf magic? Is it for all wolves- shifter and weres? *They're not immortal, but extremely long lived. Wording was very vague. Very vague. Is it because the magic that sustains them? Some wolves are stronger so they live longer? *How can Flynn be so calm about going from Beta to Gamma, just because Q says so? And is there only 1 Beta? Because I'm pretty sure he and Q were Betas, and Q is now acting Alpha. So why the demotion? *It was almost B movie horror trope what happened to Kisha. Seriously. The 1 confirmed Black woman dies? Everyone else has been mentioned as white or Indigenous. *The news Zasha gets only makes sense by way of her nickname. Russians tend to call people bears, foxes or various amphibians (if they don't like you). Or at least an old roommate of mine did lol. Her dad called her wolf. So, was that why he left Russia? Or was it her disappearing mom? No clue, stay tuned for more of the story. I have more questions but I'll add them later, after my brain rests. Insomnia and packed short stories are creating a little confusion.
‘Beta Wolf’ is book two in Lucia Ashta’s Smokey Mountain Pack series. Written in multiple POV.
Black Magic was used to turn Zasha into a Wolf Shifter. Now being with the Smoky Mountain pack she is learning how to be a Wolf and able to bring down the Mages that are turning humans into wolves. But first the pack need to find their Alpha who’s been taken without a trace.
I am so in love with this series, the exceptional world, wonderful characters and addictive storyline. This book has it all action, steam, suspense, surprises, mystery and tragedy, it will have you guessing to the very end. I read this in one sitting it was phenomenal, I couldn’t put it down I absorbed each and every word like it was oxygen to my starved lungs.
Zasha continues to show us the bada** chick that she is, no matter what is thrown at her she just gets right back up kicking a**. She has literally been thrown into a world she knows nothing about, been turned into a Wolf against her will, told that she shouldn’t have lived through the dark magic, threatened to be killed if she becomes a threat to the pack but yet she just keeps soldiering on. Zasha is a strong, independent, courageous and fierce female, I just love her character so much. She would have to be one of my favourite female characters to read to date.
We see more about Quannah’s character and his history. Quannah is the packs acting Alpha until he can get the true Alpha back, but with all the added responsibilities and threats he struggles with he’s feeling towards Zasha the mysterious She Wolf. Things between Zasha and Quannah start to heat up.
Some loved character from Ms Ashta’s other series make appearances and what a sight it is. Sadie, oh how I’ve missed this kicka**, fiery Enforcer. True to herself she is the same hilariously feisty, no holds bar chick we all love.
I am so super excited and can’t wait to see what’s in store for Zasha, Quannah and the Smoky Mountain Pack. I highly recommend reading this series, you wont be disappointed.
There still isn’t good character development here in this second installment. The whole events in chapter 7 were just ridiculous and way too cliché. They go in with weapons, including firearms, and no one just shoots the mage who’s only wielding magic on one person, they’re all standing around talking and making threats, wasting time, doing the whole villain and his statements and the heroes and their statements tiring scenario? When they’re supposed to go in and act first, don’t bother with questions? And a previous ridiculous fighting, only two in the room, taking our guards, when many more wolves are with them, and guards should be easily overtaken one to one? I really felt a lot of this writing was very juvenile in content, no maturity of writing for events to actually make sense. Then there’s a whole magical council, that was called after capture of one of the mages, so why weren’t they called and notified about the Pound, and what they were doing there a long time ago, weeks ago when it was discovered? Make it make sense, because it doesn’t. Zasha’s insistence on how she is nobody’s, never have been, the assistance on misinterpreting what it is being said Quannah says to her that she is his to protect, as also so cliché. It was already explained to her, or more than one occasion, what that means. Ever for her to say that she’s nobodies? So, she wasn’t her father’s daughter? Not her uncle’s niece? She didn’t belong to that family, who claimed her as theirs? She claimed them as hers. SO tiring. There are two powerful magical beings, along with one powerful enough to create portals and none of the three can rid Zasha of the magic tainting her? Seriously? Another nonsensical thing to the story. There’s not much in the way of forward movement in this book. Book ends on another cliffhanger involving the hunter Gideon. I’m going to go ahead to the third installment, but I don’t have high hopes, more of the well story’s not complete so I’ll give the third book a go. I’m sure there’ll be a lot of skipping and skimming to get through it. Maybe I’ll be surprised?
DNF. Stopped at 50%. This book was a hot mess which is too bad because I really liked the first one.
PROS - still look forward to finding out why she is different.
CONS - the story was sloppy. The author seemed to put time and energy into the first book and then just threw this together. The writing was also amateurish. - book 2 begins a few weeks after Zascha’s rescue. Now all of a sudden she is a part of the pack, has a home on pack property and is the Beta. How is she the beta? We don’t get any insight into how all of this happened. It was just done for the convenience of the story. - the story is much slower than the first book. The first book was action packed with a sense of urgency and desire for revenge. - There is supposed to be sexual tension between Q and Z but their relationship just felt ignorant and childish. - Q seemed kind of wimpy. Not physically but he didn’t come across very alpha. Z seemed to do most the physical stuff along with planning and ideas. - Zascha got to be annoying. She became too much like a superhero. She could do everything. I also got tired of her saying “I belong to no one”.
Unfortunately I don’t have any desire to continue this series but I’m guessing Zascha’s uncles are the head guys of The Society.
From the beginning nothing in this series is explained, no character development, and the world building is minimal. Book 1 consisted on a span for a few days where she was forced into a wolf, woke up, got in one fight and ended up some how apart of a pack. Nothing is explained and there is no character development. It felt like half a book that got expanded by switching POV around during the same time line. I got the second book thinking that this would explain more of the characters and world. For book 2 it starts off much the same. Nothing is explained, things are mentioned in dialog and the characters just roll with it no explanation to follow. Wish I hadn't payed money for this book, would have been better if it were free. Perhaps as the author gets more experience with writing the series will be better.
Zasha and Quannah are now acting Alpha and Beta of the pack. While they both admit there is something between them neither has acted on it. When a tip comes in that the Pound is packing up and leaving they take the chance to raid it, destroying the building in the process. Zasha comes face to face with the mage who turned her into a wolf. During the confrontation all with her are trapped by the mage and another wolf is killed.
Read the book to find out how they escape, what happens next and what truths are revealed. Once again a wonderful book from Lucia, you will not be able to set the book down and when it ends you will be begging for the next one.... or was that just my reaction?
I was gifted an ARC and am reviewing by my own choice.
"A beta who didn’t make sense, a member who shouldn’t be, a wolf who shouldn’t have ever been created." - Zasha
Quannah and Zasha ... Acting alpha and the new beta of The Smoky Mountain Pack. A wolf created by black magic; in a battle for their lives and those of their pack.
"Life was too short to treat it like it was made of porcelain and one wrong turn or two would make it break. Life shattered without warning and with brutality. Living was the only way to truly combat the next bomb that would inevitably arrive to blow up whatever peace and harmony she’d managed to achieve." - Zasha
Intense and compelling, Beta Wolf grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go!
With pack alpha/Quannah’s brother, Corin, no doubt in the hands of cruel Hunters, Quannah’s elevated to Alpha and the best bet for Beta is Zasha with her cage fighting skills, her anger at this untenable situation plus black magic coursing through her veins. Quannah and Zasha are attracted but he’s afraid of her magic and she’s tentative about her wolfishness.
A trip to the Pound to bring in down nets information and Zasha’s again dunked in the black magic well causing a call to the Magical Council. Meanwhile, Corin might be a breaking point under the Hunter’s TLC but not before there’s war on Smoky Mountain; another war is afoot and; a betrayal to underscore cheater’s never prosper… for long! Rating: 4.25stars
Beta Wolf is the second installment in the Smoky Mountain Pack series by Lucia Ashta. It picks right up like a rocket where Forged Wolf left off and plows full force into the roller coaster of action and emotion that made me fall in love with its characters and their story. The heat level is kicked up a notch in Beta Wolf and flows perfectly with the natural progression of the story. We do get some answers that were nagging at me in the first book but there are also so many more questions. Zasha, Quannah and the rest of the Smoky Mountain Pack are such a fun, bada$$ cast of characters and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
Thank you Lucia for finding an ingenious way to connect this book with the Magical Arts Academy! I absolutely love the wizard brothers. There is one organization that was betrayed. And one person that was betrayed although if you ask me they deserved it. Sometimes you can become blinded because you want revenge so you don't pay close enough attention or ask enough questions. I am glad Quannah & Zasha finally get together. I am worried about Zasha future though. I love the introduction of Sadie to this book! She is so bad ass. I'm a little curious if her mate is in the pack or if it's just the guys lusting after her.
Not nearly as good as the first. And I'm sad to say that Ashta does not have the gift of writing compelling love scenes. She did try, but just fell short of succeeding. This book was epicly predictable unfortunately. There I was calling all the plot twists and being so disappointed when I was right. I like a book that surprises me. There was also a lot less of Zasha's POV, which sucks because there's a lot of things happening to her, but we have to watch through Quannah's eyes. Somehow I'm still invested in this story, but I am not super enthused to find out what the ending will be. Three point five out of five stars to Beta Wolf.
The second book in this series starts off with her learning to fight in the pack. You really get to see her skills. This book is about finding their missing Alpha Corin. The mate bond is forming between Zasha and Quannah as he is acting alpha, and she is his beta. They are also working on attacking and decimating the pound. The scientist does horrible things to Corin. That part was hard to read. This book is an excellent catalyst between the intense action in the first book and the third book. It does resolve some questions as well. I didn’t enjoy this read as much as that of others, but I did enjoy the steamy scenes and the action in the book. This book was sad but, at the same time, dictated a path for the upcoming book. This book does jump between the point of view and even brings in other magical characters.
I voluntarily review an ARC. This is the second book of the Smoky Mountains Pack series, the books should be read in order. This book is even more fast paced as the first one. I just loved the rollercoaster ride, the dreadful and steamy moments, getting as many answers as new questions, the character developments and some fierce women. It's really interesting to see the connection to the pack grow stronger. I absolutely loved to meet characters out of the Magical Creatures Academy series. Can't wait to see how the story concludes and if there will be more old friends to read about.
This is a totally engrossing story that I couldn't put down! It seemlessly continues the storyline of Forged Wolf while developing the growing relationship between badass Zara and Quannah. The Easter eggs of introducing the mages and Sadie from the Magical Creature Academy series was unexpected and delicious. The action and steam were excellent and trademarks of Lucia's writing. The cliffy at the end is so unexpected I am salivating for the the release of Blood Wolf.
Beta Wolf, book 2 of the Smoky Mountain Pack series, is an ebook I downloaded from Kindle Unlimited. I mentioned in my review of book 1 there were plot inconsistencies, and some will be evident in this installment of the series. I still enjoyed the story, although the pace was slower once the wolves escaped the Pound. I started to feel a lack of development in the plot--there's stuff going on, but no sense of the conflict or urgency I felt in the first book.I would love to see more expanded detail, but I'm eager for book three to see what happens next.
Zasha is pretty much kick butt and they talk about her being it the whole way through. Awesome. Some parts were a little obnoxious but I liked her character. I liked the thing between her and Q (heh). The wolves were nice. The story walked along nicely. I didn’t think anything was too short or uneven by this point. It’s made its frame with the first book so maybe I knew what to expect this time around or didn’t care, but it was nice while it lasted.
The story's good, characters living and dying.. but I'd say the end of the 1st Alpha is very rude. We don't even know him and he took a good part of this book, but it feels like he has been forgotten just because he wasn't important. Guess I'm sad not knowing that much about him and felt very uncomfortable to read his end. Could have been more gentle and the story goes along.
There is NO WAY I would have seen that ending coming! No. Way. What in the ever loving F just happened?! No spoiler but wow!! I am literally sitting here praying the next nook is out! This series has quickly become one of my favorites and this author I will be following from here on in! This was action, passion, and a little sadness packed. We learned more about our cast of characters and met some new. I cannot wait for how this all comes together!!
Just like the first book in this series, book two was captivating and interesting. The conflict between wolves/supernaturals and the hunters/evil mages grew in this book and started the build-up for an eventual resolution in book 3. Quannah and Zasha’s relationship develops romantically and professionally as they’re the Alpha and Beta of the Smoaky Mountains pack. Very easy story to follow with intriguing characters.
The first book was a little bit slower, though it was also setting the stage for everything, so I get it. I felt that this book had a bit more action and really getting ready for the upcoming war between the wolves and hunters. There's a couple of mysteries in the book (Who are the Five? What is going on with the dark magic swirling inside of Zasha?), and a bit of a twist at the end that I'm excited to see where it goes!
Another fantastic read I loved everything about this book both zasha and quannah are amazing couple both fighting there feelings for each other the turmoil that zasha as been through and still fighting is amazing together I hope they over come everything, this book has everything love war and lots of twists you really didn't even seen coming can't wait for the next book
Quannah is attracted to Zasha, he thinks she might be his mate. The pack is notified that the Pound is moving, so they go to reek havoc. They are able to catch Marley, and take him back for questioning. Marley escapes, and is rescued by helicopter, only to be decimated by a rocket launcher.
The alpha is missing. The beta has to step up and take charge. While he is trying to help his pack, he is also trying to deal with the idea that he has found his mate. And not just any mate, a mate that was forced to change to a wolf with dark magic. You get to see other points of view from others that are not the MC's. I like this series and can't wait to read the next book.
