The sixth book in the Mountain Man series starts back at the military bunker, Whitecap. Collie, Gus and new prisoner Milo, also known as 'Top Gun', who's a former member of The Leather, make a plan to go out and find out more about the latter's old group and its head leader, 'Dog Tongue'.
There has always been humour scattered throughout the series, and this one is no different. Gus does have his funny moments; for instance, when he stumbles upon a life-size Captain Morgan cardboard cut-out in memory of his old 'friend' and travels around talking to it for a while. His toilet paper obsession is also still in full flow.
Collie is as formidable as ever, but her story takes a turn for the worse; we got a snapshot in the previous book of her affliction, and she has been on a downward trajectory since—she's really made the last 2 or 3 books for me; I'm a big fan of her character.
It felt heavier on the Mad Max-type vibe (it even receives a name drop); I think that was mostly due to The Leather and their weird members and the outfits they wear, plus we get a couple of road battles. There's lots of fast-paced action again as Gus and his crew battle to overcome the bad guys; it gets pretty gruesome in places. The Author does a good job at describing some of the grisly stuff because it made me grimace more than once.
We get a big showdown as this instalment draws to its conclusion, and a really sad ending too. I'm going to move on to the seventh and, as it currently stands, the final book, to see what Gus does next.
