Turn Back Time: The Escape

Rate this book
Claire and Sam are back and decide to investigate the mystery of the pocket watch. Unfortunately, before they can even begin, Sam’s big brother Nolan gets in the way. Suddenly they’re thrown back in time – again. This time, though, Nolan is there too. Who are they supposed to help? How will they do that with Nolan the Pest around?

Claire, Sam, and Nolan find themselves in Antebellum South Carolina on a huge plantation. Hattie Meyers, a slave, needs their help. She has been planning an escape for years. She was supposed to be a part of a slave uprising and escape plan led by Denmark Vesey, a freedman living in Charleston, but the government found out, and he was arrested and hanged for the plot. Hattie almost lost all hope. Now, with the help of our three time travelers, she has a chance to escape again, but they don’t know anything about the underground railroad. In order to help, they have to follow Hattie’s lead and play their parts perfectly, or everyone’s lives could be in danger.

A great read!

A great short historical read for young kids to learn about history. I have not read the first book, but I intend to. A great read with well-thought-out characters and storyline. Well done.

This is the second in the educational Turn Back Time series for children. Claire and Sam have been very careful not to activate the time-travel watch again, but Sam's brother Nolan accidentally sends them all back to a hot summer in early nineteenth-century South Carolina, where they are disturbed to witness slavery first hand, both on a plantation and in the slave port of Charleston. As Nolan says "It's one thing to hear about it or read about it. It's another entirely to see it." The Underground Railroad is rather a standard feature in children's literature about slavery, but I don't think I've ever seen the very first stage before – "buying a ticket", as it were. There are no surprises in this short book, but it is well imagined. The discussion questions at the end are thought-provoking.

This is another book I have read from the author. Yet again....very well done. Claire and Sam are such interesting characters that all they want to do is solve a mystery. Wanting to know the true meaning of the pocket watch. But then all they want to do is solve the mystery, but they have someone else with them who is normally annoying, and the question is if they can solve it. It is such an amazing historical read for children of an older age. I know if my son when he is older he would be interested in it for sure. I am going to recommend this to the local library in my own where I live. Well done! :)

Historical fiction for kids

This is a fun early chapter book where kids travel back in time using an old pocket watch in order to help others. This book actually covered a fairly controversial topic, but I thought it handled it very well and even included discussion questions at the end to get kids thinking. It was the perfect length for a younger child just delving into chapter books.

This is exactly the kind of story Iloved when I was the age of its intended audience. American historyand fantasy and time travel? Yes, yes and yes! And to be completelyhonest, I enjoyed reading it now. This charming book tackles thiscountry's difficult history of slavery in quite an interesting way.It is hard to miss how timely this story is, either. A great way forkids to learn about a troubling period of American history in anentertaining and engaging manner.

Awesome educational book

I read this book with my nine-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter. We all loved it! I love the glossary at the end, and I would recommend it to anyone with kids between eight and 13 years old. We are looking forward to checking out the rest of the series.

I really enjoyed reading this short chapter book about time travel. The story is very well-written with the characters seeing and experiencing slavery first hand. The author’s descriptive portrayal also feels like you are there too. The glossary and questions for review and discussion at the end is great conversation starter with kids.

Loved It‼

What a compelling fictional story. The authoress did an excellent job with character traits. Claire, Sam and Nolan all travel back in time and the only way they can return back to reality is to help someone. I loved how they helped Hattie and her two children and wont spoil it for you. Great Read!

Nice addition to the Turn Back Time series. Mavin makes a bold attempt to explore a dark topic in American history. The story holds a young readers interest and sparks enough curiosity to have energized discussion on the topic.

Wonderful yet quick read about the Underground Railroad. This book is filled with obscure facts about the difficult and dangerous work or slave conductors during the 19th century. The glossary and questions at the end are an added bonus!
