This was a fascinating, informative book that explored the inner workings and structures of a wide variety of objects. The book was divided up into several different categories including Ocean Creatures, Space, Food and Homes. Each topic was a two page spread, and each page had a lift the flap element. Un-flipped the pages depicted the objects as seen by the naked eye. Lift the flap and the cross sections and interiors were revealed.
Ocean Creatures focused on animals such as the blue whale, seahorses, and jellyfish. The animals were described along with their anatomy. Space discussed planets, rockets and astronauts. The inner makeup of the planet's, machines and space suits were shown. Food showed the cross sections of many fruits and vegetables. Homes depicted lodgings from across the globe. From a gypsy wagon to an igloo.
Each chapter had a different illustrator, and this showcased a variety of artistic styles, from realistic to more free form. All the art was beautifully rendered and brought each topic to life.
A wonderful hodgepodge of topics, that made for very engaging reading.
In Focus by Libby Walden is the superhero cape for those who usually find science, building, animals, and inventions about as thrilling as watching paint dry. Strap in for a wild ride as this book swoops in to save the day, transforming snooze-worthy subjects into an exhilarating escapade. With its flashy visuals and quick bursts of knowledge, it's like the most fabulous rollercoaster rides through the world of discovery. But fair warning, folks: this adventure is more suited for young adventurers than seasoned explorers.
But wait, buckle up for a minor disappointment. Suppose you're hoping to unearth the hidden secrets of the universe or unravel the mysteries of life. In that case, this book might not be your golden ticket. In Focus is more like a teaser trailer than a deep-dive documentary. It flits from one topic to another with the speed of a hummingbird on caffeine, leaving you craving more substantial content. So, adult adventurers seeking the holy grail of knowledge might want to venture elsewhere.
While it might catch the fancy of adult dreamers seeking a breezy introduction, this adventure is designed to excite young hearts. With its simplified explanations and kid-friendly approach, it hits the bullseye in captivating little explorers, fostering curiosity, and igniting a love for learning. In Focus by Libby Walden may not win the Pulitzer Prize for its in-depth explanations or cater to adult adventurers' insatiable thirst for knowledge. But it deserves applause for its daring mission to transform science, building, animals, and inventions into a thrilling escapade for those who usually find them as dull as watching grass grow. So, grab your cape, summon your inner superhero, and join the ranks of young adventurers ready to conquer the world, one exciting page at a time!

With its interesting facts and fold-out pages, this large book is designed to keep curious young readers engaged for hours. Ten different illustrations provide their take on ten different topics, including the Ocean, Homes, Earth and Space, Landmarks, Nature, Everyday Objects, Buildings, Fruit and Vegetables, Animals, and Transportation. Readers are treated to close-ups of some of the subjects as well as what's inside each of them. The book jacket indicates that there are 101 nifty items highlighted here, and I would say that might be an understatement. The colorful book will provide hours of browsing fun and guarantee that readers won't be bored. After all, who doesn't want to deconstruct the Statue of Liberty or see what's inside a sofa or a honeybee? This book will be in continuous circulation for libraries, and if it belongs to someone's personal library, it will see quite a lot of use. There are no worries about that, though, since it is sturdy and well constructed.
This was a very interesting book that looks inside of various things. I thought that it was a little random in what the author chose to cross section but I guess you can’t do it all in one book. :)
Such a fun way for kids to see inside of a variety of things. Heavy on text (understandable given how much it covers) but didn't read it all to the kids
