Omega Taskforce #1

The Emissary

Rate this book
The Sa’Nerra were close to defeat, then everything changed. Armed with a unique neural weapon, the merciless alien warriors turned Fleet crew against their own. Entire warships went rogue. Suspicion and fear ran riot. Surrender seemed like the only option. But Captain Lucas Sterling knows that in the fight against the Sa’Nerra there is only victory or death. Sterling is an Omega Captain. His rank and his command of the Fleet Marauder Invictus were both won in a depraved and monstrous trial of grit and determination. Sterling will do anything to ensure the Sa’Nerra do not prevail. Even if that means killing Fleet crew that have been “turned”. Even if that means killing the people he loves. But the neural control weapon is not the only danger Fleet faces. Deep inside the Void the aliens are building a super-weapon. Sterling and his crew must destroy it at all costs. Back on Earth, the United Governments are desperate for peace. Then after fifty years without a single word of contact between the two races, the Sa’Nerra finally send an emissary. But the belligerent alien race sent an emissary of war, not peace. The fate of humanity now lies in the hands of Captain Sterling and the Omega officers of the Invictus. But victory is only possible if he is willing to do anything it takes to win.

When I read the prequel and afterwards this instalment I was totally fascinated and horrified at the same time. It compelled me to go on reading. A complete change from his previous series. Unlike The Darkspace Renegade series, Omega Taskforce is a dark and gritty Science Fiction, at least that’s how I felt. It’s a realistic view of cruelty, cold hearted, dispassionate and passionate, forceful and dramatic, on both sides of the two factions, the humans and the aliens. Amazing world building and a great character driven series. With Ruthless alien warriors, running gun battles, devastating space combat, mystery, high-stakes action and epic twists.
It’s action filled, exciting, and thought provoking. The lengths humans, in this case Captain Sterling has to go to try aniquílate the enemy needs guts, and resolve to fight against humans who are turned against themselves thanks to the aliens’ superior powers. It’s incredibly intriguing and full of mystery. I am totally snagged!

DNF. I couldn't get past 20 pages in the book. The setting is in every way completely unrealistic, I've seen bugs bunny cartoons whose story was told more plausibly, and the characters were imbeciles.

I received an ARC of this book and am leaving a review voluntarily.

Capt. Lucas Sterling of the Invictus is an Omega leader and will do anything to save humanity from its greatest enemy: The Sa’Nerra.

But the Sa’Nerra are not your typical alien enemy, for they have an ability to tap into the neural networks of Fleet officers and turn them against their own. Sterling and his crew are willing to kill those Fleet members who have been conscripted by the Sa’Nerra despite the personal costs to himself and others.

However, Sterling discovers the Sa’Nerra are also building a super weapon in deep space and finds himself pitting his crew against time in a race to save mankind.

I’ve read tons of science fiction over the years, and I’d classify this as a pretty pure sci-fi novel. The action begins on page one and doesn't let up until the end, which I enjoyed. I also liked the secondary characters aboard the Invictus, especially Sterling's two main female officers. I love when authors create kick-butt female heroines who can give as well as they get.

I did have a couple of issues with the writing, however, the first one being that author GJ Ogden needs to invest in a good copy editor. I can overlook a few typos here and there, but the grammar, spelling, typo, and usage mistakes I kept stumbling over really interrupted my reading flow.

Second, I would really have liked more sensory - or figurative - language in the prose. Throughout the reading, I did not get much of a sense of how the characters and settings looked, smelled, felt, etc. Good writing is good writing, whether it’s a hardcore sci-fi or period romance, and part of quality writing is being able to experience the ride along with the protagonists and antagonists.

This book is just part one of a new series, so I hope the author adds more experiential language to his upcoming adventures.

Death💀 and Destruction🚀 on Steroids!

ADULT Sci-fi🚀
Don't these people wear helmets!? This was one of the main flaws I found. These bad a$$es run into horrific blaster gun battles with body armor but no helmets, a la James Kirk! The book has very strong female 💪👊( literally) characters protecting Captain Sterling🐺🔪🔫, the last and best cold blooded killer 💀🔪🔫of their enemy, the Sa'Narren aliens.👹

The Sa'Narren aliens👹 are an indecipherable race with seemingly only the death of humans💀 and destruction of their colonized planets 🌏on their minds.

The humans have a huge flaw of all being fitted with a neural implant at birth , making them venerable to hacking by the aliens👹. The aliens👹 "turn" them into zombie like compliant shells.

Sterling,🐺🔪🔫 in his ruthless quest to annihilate the aliens, must also kill 💀and destroy thousands of "turned " humans, who cannot ever recover their wits. Does he have second thoughts or guilt about killing his fellow humans? H*ll NO!!

I Also got this ebook from Amazon for 99¢

This is a fast paced, well written and thought out, kill🔫🔪 or be killed💀 sci-fi space🚀 adventure! This is the first book in this series, starring ship🚀 Captain Lucas Sterling.

Humanity expanded into the universe and bumped into a hive species that has no concept of surrender or negotiation - and to make matters worse, they are smart. These aren't mindless completely alien bugs looking for protein like in Weber & White's The Shiva Option. These aliens are a manipulative, conniving enemy turning some of humanity's greatest strengths into liabilities. The team fighting them? A ship full of the coldest, most ruthless, morally ambiguous soldiers a certain secret department could dredge up. They'll do what needs to be done, no matter the cost, but is it enough? and is it worth it?

Explosive, action-filled, military sci-fi space opera. Everything from space battles to hand-to-hand combat. This ship is crewed with mostly the kind of people Frank Castle would fit in well with. They seem like good people, but kinda scary and you don't want to be on their bad side - especially since some of them are unnerved by their companions. Humor was well used in this book too - kept things moving and from getting too dark. The political intrigue was wrapped into the story in an interesting way too - the repercussions of attacks on various human outposts play a roll in the conflict as well adding depth.

Book 1 in the Omega Taskforce series, if this book is any indication this series is going to be one wild ride! Contains a full story arc and ends in a good place, but is only the beginning of the story and introduces a HUGE conflict at the end for the next book to deal with. You are going to want to keep reading this series to the end.

Total crap, i can't believe people read this. Or even someone wrote it.
A couple of examples:
-The aliens attack with ...knives, the humans have plasma guns, the aliens die like flies, but they .. corner the humans.
-The aliens can subvert humans, but the regular soldiers are too soft to kill their buddies if they are subverted, so we need special, tough soldiers to kill the subverted. Probably the author doesn't even watch historical war documentaries..
I am sure there are more idiotic tropes, but could not read more than 50-60 pages.
Exemplary lazy writing. Beware.

Not a good read

A rather silly book with unreal cartoonist characters that don't act real in any way, and the enemy is the same.

Up Against the Sa'Nerra . . .

When the Sa’Nerra had almost been defeated, a neural weapon was brought into play to turn Fleet crew against each other, driving them to believe surrender was the only option left. Captain Lucas Sterling knows, however, that against the Sa’Nerra, there is no surrender. You either win or you die. If he has to kill his own “turned” crew members, he will.

The neural control weapon is not the only danger now. A super-weapon is being built. It must be stopped. And something suspicious occurs back on Earth. The United Governments, seeking to negotiate peace, are astounded when the Sa’Nerra send an emissary after 50 years of no contact. But it’s not peace they want.

Humanity’s survival is at stake. Captain Sterling and the Omega officers of the Invictus must do anything to win. Can they? Even with the odds against them?

This book is exactly what I would expect from a strong science fiction story. The action begins immediately and sustains itself throughout the relentless pace of the story line. The characters are ruthless, willing to do what must be done in this all-or-nothing battle for survival. Expect to be pulled into the action and not released. Victory is not guaranteed, but sending in the confident Omega Captain who will make those tough decisions gives the reader a bit of hope. Grab your copy and watch the battle unfold.

The heart of an Omega Taskforce officer is colder than the depths of space.

As humanity spread out across the galaxy, they reached the edge of another species' area of control. The new species was not friendly. Humanity had been fitted with neural communication devices connected to their brains, allowing for fast communication. Somehow, the aliens had developed an override for the neural links, giving them control of the actions and thoughts of humans captured. The Omega Taskforce was developed to combat these zombies. Members chosen for the Omega Taskforce were capable of making terrifying choices when called upon. Like shooting the head off a friend and co-worker to keep them from being turned.

Such is the life and work of an Omega Taskforce team and one of only two Taskforces is compromised. The Marauder class Invictus is the only Taskforce vessel left. The crew of their sister ship were brainwashed in a new process that didn't destroy the minds of its victims. Memories, knowledge were intact, but turned to the aliens' will.
The crew of the Invictus are singularly unique. One diminutive weapons tech was the best fighter, perhaps anywhere! Another had inhuman strength. All were uniquely qualified to man the Invictus as it sought the aliens. Great characters and a strong storyline make this a great read!

This is a really fascinating series, a somewhat darker view of the future, much darker than a lot of the Mil Sci-Fi/Space Opera that are about at the moment, but it is done in a very clever way.
In this future, Humanity is at war with a species called the Sa’Nerran, a ruthless Insectoid race that have no interest in diplomacy and negotiation, only the total annihilation of all humans.
Humanity has advanced hugely with technology, and every human now has a piece of tech, called a neural interface, grafted to their brains when they are younger, and updated when they are teenagers, allowing them instant access to data streams, additional memory, communication between each other, all sorts of things.
However, Humanity, having reached out into the stars, found the Sa’Nerran, and a war started that has been going for over 50yrs. Humans were winning to start with, until just recently, when the Sa’Nerran discovered how to overtake the human neural interface. Initially, it is just to turn Humans into mindless zombies, attacking over humans onsite. However, more recently, the Sa’Nerran have managed to not only corrupt the interface, but reprogram it to make those humans affected do more. And that is were Omega Taskforce comes into play, they hunt out ‘infected’ or ‘turned’ humans, and kill them, because once turned, there is no going back, you can’t be saved.
This makes for a really interesting story, one that is at times, incredibly brutal, and makes you think about what you would do in the similar situation. Because the book just isn’t about cold blooded killing and destruction, it follows Captain Sterling very closely, and the crew of his ship, the Invictus.
We get to read about a lot of what Sterling is thinking, and feeling, really delving into his psychological state.
Ogden is a true Master at this style of intuitive writing, really delving into the inner depths of what a character is thinking and feeling. This is an extraordinary journey in the case of Sterling, as he is an ‘Omega Captain’, willing to kill his best friend in cold blood, just for the sake of the mission, and stop the Sa’Nerran. He shot her in the head to save the last Dreadnaught, and hundreds of human fleet personnel. Whilst this still haunts him, he knows it was the right decision, and even though he suffers acute PTSD from that and many other decisions, he appears unbreakable.
But in this book, he is faced with a new moral crisis – what about if it is killing another Omega Captain, not only a friend, but something more. This is an utterly fascinating foray into the mind of a Captain who holds the future of humanity in his hand, between him, and the ships Invictus and Imperium there is very little to stop the Sa’Nerran overrunning humanity and crushing them all – but Humanity has no idea.
There are multiple other incredible characters in this series, Mercedes Banks is not only hilarious as the ‘Super Soldier’, XO of the Invictus, a Human with an incredible metabolism, that along with the planet she grew up on, has given her incredible strength, multiple times that of a human, and a bit like the Hulk, the angrier she gets, the tougher. She also enters a berserker rage, and loses complete control of all her faculties when in berserk mode, and it is only the touch of Sterling’s mind via their neural networks, that seems to stop her. It is a really stunning sequence of events to watch unfold, and kind of funny (as long as you aren’t the one on the receiving end), when she picks up soldiers by the heads and launches them into next week. (Make a calendar appointment to watch them land with a sickening crunch on Tuesday).
Opal Shade, the mysterious woman, released from prison by Admiral Griffon, to serve as Invictus’ Tactical Officer, is a mystery, wrapped in an enigma, no one really knows anything about her, other than she was in a high security prison, and got busted out, and is now working on board Invictus. And she is exceptional, both on the weapons systems, and in hand to hand. There have been rumours in the first Novella, but we get to see her fight in this book, and it is amazing, with the most incredible combat sequences, something Ogden writes like an absolute Master.
This is an intriguing story, with a lot of mystery, fast paced action, and some intense, brutal and often vicious combat sequences. The combat both on the ground and in space, is just beautifully written, you become mesmerised by how well it is written, and a lot of them you go back and re-read, they are so good, you need to make sure you didn’t miss anything.
On top of this, is Ogden’s world building, which is just magnificent. There is so much depth, so many facets, and it is so intricate. His worlds, ships, people, the Sa’Nerran, the Tech, all of it, is just so wonderfully done, with this stunning multi-faceted, comprehensive description of everything. The ships are incredibly detailed, you feel you could walk the halls. The tech is so detailed, with all this impressive detail that makes you stop and think, and you have this unbelievable visual of what it looks like. Everything is so well done with the world building, Ogden has obviously spent a lot of time crafting this Universe for his characters to exist, and has done an exquisite job for us readers.
This is a book that you will wonder about, thinking that it sounds like an unusual storyline, and possibly even, ‘where is it going to go?”, but without giving away spoilers, it is an extraordinary piece of writing, the story is just brilliant, once you start, you are going to be glued to the book, not able to put it down, as it captures you, and moves along at a blistering pace. And as the story progresses you realise that the story is not only incredibly creative, but really inspired, and it has so much depth to it, this is one that will be going for multiple books to come, each one getting better than the last.
This is one book that is an absolute must read for anyone who likes Mil Sci-Fi, Space Opera, Alien Invasion, or just a good Thriller. There is so much to offer, and the Character work and World-Building are just outstanding!!
Get on board whilst the series is early, it is a Must Read!!!

Earth is tired of war, but surrender to the alien enemy could mean extinction or worse. Can our hero and his crew change the course of the war?

This is book one of the series, so a good place to start.

This is an intense, fast paced military SF story. The story is very well written, with a lot of depth to both the setting and the characters. The plot is intense and fast paced, with lots of twists and turns along the way that keep you on your toes and unsure what is going to happen next. I found myself intrigued by the world and drawn in from the beginning with a story that is intense, exciting and very engaging. Overall, it was a fantastic read and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Highly recommended.

I received this book as a free advanced reader copy and am leaving this review voluntarily. I actually quite liked this one as I am newer to the space opera genre in the last few years. It had a new take on the genre that I hadn’t come across before.
Humans have expanded into nearby space until they accidentally pissed off an alien race and started a war.
This book focuses on our protagonist who will do WHATEVER IT TAKES to help win the war. He is the captain of one of only two space ships with special permission to do anything to prevent fringe colonies from being taken over and used for knowledge and technology.

I will stop the summary there but really did like the many twists and turns this novel took on and I will be looking out for the next book in the series to see what happens next!

A very good beginning to a new series with just a few caveats.

This was a very good book, a real page turner. It was fast paced and had good character development and plenty of action. It reminds me of section 31 from Star Trek but on steroids. I enjoy the Cold hearted discipline of Lucas Sterling, don’t leave an enemy alive. I also enjoy the camaraderie between him and his second in command Mercedes banks. When I did not like what is the fact that they’re standing up on the bridge, ever hear of chairs. The only other aspect was doing the first fire fight you don’t bring power packs to refill your weapons shame. If this author has beta readers they should’ve made note of these issues. Besides that a great book read it.

Meet Captain Lucas Sterling, a Captain who will do what he must to win a war against the alien race bent on the destruction of all humans. The aliens have a horrible weapon that turns the fleet personal against each other but Captain Lucas Sterling ends up being the hope of the humans to win the war. It was fast paced, deadly, and had lots of action and danger. It made for a wild read but it both entertained me and kept me guessing as to what Sterling and his crew would face next and what hard decisions they would have to make next. Just a good read and start of a series that I have high hopes for.

I would like to thank Book Sirens and the author for giving me access to this ARC.

I found this book to be a very entertaining, action packed, fast read. It kept me turning pages to see what was coming next, and has made me impatient for the next book in the series.

This is a military space-based combat science fiction story that provides a high level of reader engagement in the warship fighting sequences. Recommended as a good sci-fi galactic war quick read.

Looking forward to the follow ups.

"Their mission was destruction."
A bleak military science fiction book set in the car future when, after expanding deep into the universe, an alien life form had overwhelmed and assimilated the humans encountered by use of a neural device. Only two ships were still allowed to travel into the Void to try to protect and stop total invasion: their mission to destroy wherever the Sa'Nerra have touched.
Fast action with unlikable characters, this is not the usual cosy battle SF, but is absolutely enthralling. First in a series, I will definitely look out for more.

Great read the build of this universe is a twist on others , tech slightly different neral implant communication , thats a bit iffy , how it seems to work and its a weakness. Bad guy aliens and bad guy humans who are turned by the weakness. Good story lines of the conflicts. Good personality built of crew .
Enjoyable space opera action .

A page turning Sci-Fi epic straight out of the Battlestar Galactica playbook. Epic scenes, great characters, and well written sequences will keep you up late reading this one. Hard to put down, you just keep wanting more and wanting to know what happens next. Like the elite warriors of today, it takes great Characrcter to be an Omega.

Fascinating Space Opera

This was an action-packed space opera which had an interesting premise. Defeat their superior foes or watch humanity be destroyed. I found the story to be exciting and the characters believable. Will humanity be destroyed or will the Omega Task force be able to stop them. Find out in the next book.

pretty good

I enjoyed this book. I thought there were a few holes.
Like in the beginning the author made it sound like the aliens only had old tech, and they were losing but at the ends, it was clear the aliens were winning, so that is confusing. I also don’t like the do anything to win attitude. I think yet jays how we got to Mazi Germany

Nice, fast read. Good guys v bad aliens (more or less)

Nothing I like better than a god space based shoot 'em up. Could there have been more character development? Yes, but this is part of a series so I won't ding it for that when I've only read the first book. I enjoyed what I read enough to get the box set and looking forward to the next installment.

The human race is at war with the Sa'nerra and they are losing. A new approach is required and the Omega Taskforce is it. Led by Captain Lucas Sterling, who will do whatever it takes to win, no matter the cost. Good start to the series, as Lucas and his team are introduced and battle lines are drawn.
