Open Secrets #1

Down on One Knee

Rate this book
Sebastian Hale has a problem. He needs his inheritance to pay for his brother’s cancer treatment, but thanks to a clause in his parents’ will, he won’t be able to access it unless he gets married before he turns 30.
And his birthday is less than a month away.

His solution? Ask his tall, tattooed, and sexy-as-hell best friend, Rook, to marry him. Sebastian doesn’t do relationships, as a rule: he’s certain he has nothing to offer a romantic partner, and if there’s any simmering tension between him and Rook, he’s been doing just fine ignoring it so far. After a year of marriage, Sebastian will inherit, they’ll get divorced, and no one—including Sebastian’s meddling relatives—will be the wiser.

Cameron Rook has a problem. He’s been in love with his slender, snarky, sharp-tongued best friend, Sebastian, for as long as he can remember. But the one time Rook tried to confess, Sebastian shot him down. Hard.
At least that’s how Rook remembers it.

So when Sebastian asks Rook to marry him just for show—and offers a generous amount of money as compensation—it’s the last thing Rook expected. But he would do anything for Sebastian. Even when living in close quarters only fans the flames of the irresistible pull between them, and Rook is in serious danger of falling into Sebastian’s bed...

After all, there’s no way this can go wrong. Right?

Down on One Knee is a 62,000 word fake relationship, best friends to lovers, standalone romance novel with a little angst, a whole lot of heat, and a cat named BJ. HEA guaranteed.

This was so sweet and fun!! Me and fake boyfriend/marriage's trope, we work together so well!! *sighs like a maiden*

This was just really cute, it was a simple read with a little bit of angst to get things spicy, the characters had enough depth to really charm me, the sex was hoooot and the story was well done. It's a series so we get to know the group at large and I like what I see. This was just what I needed I was smiling all the time...

Lovely read. 🥰❤

3.75 stars rounded up.

~some minor, vague spoilers ahead~

a fairly good debut novel. not quite a 4-star read for me because, as much as i liked the two leads individually, i wasn’t super invested in their romance? and the resolution to the whole inheritance story was a tad anticlimactic to me, too. i also found the story’s villain too one-dimensional; i prefer when the villains in these stories have at least a little depth to them. and he didn’t really even get any kind of comeuppance on page?? how disappointing! i wanted someone to finally put him in his place and stand up for Sebastian (besides Rook). the whole extended family stuff was kind of baffling, actually. i think i was supposed to like them and finding them quirky and charming… well, i didn’t lmao.

but whatever! despite me being a chronic complainer in this review, i did rather enjoy this book overall. i’ll definitely check out the sequel whenever it comes out, too, cause i really enjoyed Finn’s brief appearances in this one.

I loved this 😍 Really simply written, classic friends to lovers trope, fake marriage, little bit of angst and a HEA. What’s not to love?! 💕💕

This was so good for me. It was great really. Nothing to intense or groundbreaking just two bestfriends, Sebastian and Rook, playing the fake marriage trope. They fell for each other obviously yada yada yada, you guys know the drill. This book was for me when I realized I can't stop giggling and swooning at 3 in the morning. Excited for the next one!

This book took the fake marriage trope and knocked it out of the park.

I loved this book so much more than I thought I would. I might be biased because this is one of my favorite tropes, but I also like to think I’m a good judge of it thanks to how many I’ve read. I reserve my 5 stars for books I’d reread, want everyone to read, and/or have done something really unique. If I were to rate tropes separately, then this would be a 5 star of the fake marriages.

Beyond the main trope, this author managed to take a few other cliche storylines and go above and beyond my expectations. I usually hate miscommunication in my books, but she did this well. It made sense for our MCs. The annoying meddling villain? Annoying, but kind of fun to read at the same time. I was just so pleased with how everything went. It was a lighthearted read, but not devoid of any tension. We also had other characters, but the story was still firmly about the love story.

The thing that that really makes me happy is when I can relate to the characters. These two felt believable and, while I really connected with Seb, both characters were so well done I found commonality with both. This also meant that their inner dialogue and actual dialogue was never too much, boring, or out of character.

This was an excellent first novel and I can’t wait to read the next in the series!

Fake boyfriend/marriage is my favourite trope and when its done right *swoon*

This book was a low-angst best friends to lovers story and it was wonderful! The author did a great job of creating fleshed-out characters and realistic chemistry. I loved how prickly and reserved Sebastian was compared to Rook's easy-going casual self. Their dynamic worked well and had you wanting them to admit their feelings already goddamnit !! I couldn't put this book down and I'm so happy to have stumbled upon it.

We got a sneak peek of the next book in this series so I'm really excited to read about Finn (and hopefully Jules?🤞🏼)

I wish I could have loved this as much as my friends! I was wavering between 3.5-4 stars, but then I lost interest after the dreaded miscommunication (one of my least favourite tropes) and I struggled to finish 😬:

What I liked:

✅ Fake marriage
✅ Friends to lovers
✅ The steam
✅ Well written
✅ Side characters I’d like to read more about (Jules/Finn)

What I didn’t:

🚫 An MC that I just couldn’t warm to
🚫 OTT evil protagonist
🚫 Miscommunication
🚫 Saccharine sweet HEA
🚫 Third person dual POV

All in all, a promising debut, but best not to scrutinise too much for maximum enjoyment!

I LOVED IT!!!!!! I honestly didn't expect to like this as much as I did and I'm glad I picked this one up. Didn't like Seb much in the starting before I began to realise just how much of an insecure idiot he was being. Loved Rook right from the starting though.

It felt like a perfect hallmark book with the right amount of crying and laughing and a lot of sappy speeches. The fake-marriage did seem a bit childish when I thought about it after Seb realises it but since the intent behind it was subconsciously love it wasn't a problem.

And last. Miscommunication. Name of the game in their relationship. Starting with the hilltop confession to seeing Jules and Rook on the bed to confessing again. They always seem to be having two entirely different conversations all the time. But the whole thing seemed so natural I had no trouble imagining it happening irl.

I also liked the way the author seemed to seamlessly glide from past to present without having to spell it out. Like, you know, starting a new chapter with five years before and stuff like that. I think this is the first time I'm saying this but I loved how it was written. It was just perfect.

The cover could have used a different hot guy. The whole book gave of a slight 'SUITS' vibe and the guy on the cover reminded me of Trevor from 'suits'. And Trevor is NOT a nice guy to be compared with.

[2.5] hmmm i dunno i couldn’t really connect to this as much as i’d hoped. i was expecting less miscommunication from a pair of bffs4ever, but i was proven wrong when Rook and Seb wouldn’t let each other talk or when they would word things in the most easily misconstrued way possible. especially Seb. for a lawyer, he was just so incredibly dense, and his brain somehow always went out of the way to say the wrong things and watching him dig a hole for himself got to be too much for me by the end. the writing was decent and i can see the potential so rounding up, but the execution simply didn’t work for me 🙈

So... this one is interesting. Basically I shouldn't really like this book. It contains everything I'd rather not have in a romance. There's lots of manufactured drama, the intrigue doesn't make much sense and the miscommunication ratio is really high... On top of that it's written in this weird third person, present form that makes it all feel a little disconnected. With all that said.... I loved this book. For some reason I don't even know myself...

This was really what I was in the mood for. I rolled my eyes a couple times, but that's just because of miscommunication and not talking! Buut... It also made sense here. Sebastian and Rook have been friends for many years, and both have had issues with relationships - whether they be family, friendship, love interest, what-have-you. It would be extremely nerve-wracking/scary to even thinking about admitting feelings, let alone alone to do so, especially when you thought you'd already done so...

I actually really enjoyed the way this played out, even with the OTT of Toby. At least it got everything out in the open and especially helped Jon (and, in turn, Sebastian and Rook).

Random side note, but the expression of the guy on the cover really throws it off for me. It just isn't fitting at all for either main character. I am definitely extremely interested in more details about Rook's tattoos though!

I am particularly impressed by this being a debut. I will keep an eye on this author and check out more in the future. I haven't really read much of this trope since they're usually just all of the miscommunication and rely on it far too much. And, yes, there is that here, but the background really helped. I also had a fun time with the side characters here. I actually wanted more of Finn here too.

"We're married, but he..." How could Sebastian phrase this? "He pays more attention to his other friends than he pays to me."
Finn nodded thoughtfully, resting his chin on his fist. He had the expression of someone about to deliver great marital wisdom, and Sebastian subconsciously leaned forward in his desk chair.
"Don't get jealous," Finn said sagely. "Get laid."

This literally had me laughing out loud. They way it was done was so great. Loved it.

I loved the backstory as far as why Sebastian picked up the leaves while at the gravesite. So touching.

DNF @ 26%.

A quarter in and I have absolutely no interest in any component of this book.

And then you get lines like “[…] his watery blonde hair slicked back with too much hair gel […]”.

Watery? What on earth does watery blonde mean? And seeing as we are talking about a “he”, it should be “blond”, sans the E.

I was pretty impressed by this début novel by Sage Kingsley. It was not the most original - a fake marriage with the best friend to earn an inheritance because of an idiotic stipulation (Sebastian's family is honestly such trash for this). And often this trope is just like wildly unrealistic and cringe, but I enjoyed this so much. Sebastian is the friend that needs to get married before his 30th birthday, and Rook is his lifelong best friend that's been carrying a torch for him for years. This goes exactly how you would expect it, and it would make such a great romcom. The thing I really wished was different is the speed at which everything happens. I would have really liked to see the tension drawn out more, have them be in a fake-domestic situation for longer before everything comes to a head. It was pretty sexy too, but could definitely have been sexier. I just wanted more of them, basically. In any case, it was an entertaining read and I hope we get the sequel soon.

I'm glad I took the chance and gave this book a shot. It had two of my best trope...best friend to lovers and fake relationship. The writing was decent and I did not get bored...I was thoroughly entertained. Sebastian and Rook was great together. Sebastian did come off a little mean and snarky but Rook really balanced him out with his laid back and sweet personality...it also helped that he was HOT! The guys were already best friends so I knew when they eventually get together it was going to be explosive. This had a little angst...a horrible cousin...wonderful friends and brother...some real nice steamy scenes and best of all a happy ending. I'm glad this will turn into a series because I definitely looking out for Finn's story next.

This was an amazing best friends to lovers story! The story centers on Sebastian and his loving best friend, Rook. Sebastian needed to get married before the age of 30 so he could receive his inheritance for his bother's cancer treatment. And thus the fake marriage trope begins...I loved how this author wrote her characters. I am entralled this is her debut book! I even enjoyed reading the family interactions (which I usually find boring). Also, the sexy times were hottttt. I can't wait to read more from Sage Kingsley!!

Hmmm I'm kinda sad I didn't like this as much, but that might have been because I was looking for a mutual-pining-hurts-so-good angst book but this one didn't really land that? I dunno it's hard to describe but I just came off a great mutual pining/unintentional jealousy book and this one didn't really hit the mark.

What I liked:
+ I dunno, I was pretty invested in how the story would play out? But sadly it didn't play out to my wishes and kinda missed the mark for me
+ it was well-written though

What I didn't like:
- Coming from someone who thrives off keeping-the-status-quo, mutual pining miscommunication and angst... there was... too much? that it was almost OTT and not believable? you're telling me that these two were friends for NINETEEN YEARS and yet they were so uncertain about each other's character? I got kinda bored with all the he-doesn't-like-me and when Sebastian finally pulled his head out of the sand, it wasn't that satisfying?
- speaking of satisfying, just personally, I hated that

This book had more angst than I was expecting for a fake-marriage-with-real-feelings storyline, but it really works. Sebastian needs to get married because a codicil in his parents' will keeps him from his inheritance if he's not married by age 30, and he needs the money for his brother's cancer treatment. Rook has been friends with (and in love with) Sebastian since they were young, so he's clearly the only one for the job. But even though Rook is his best friend, Sebastian still essentially tricks and manipulates him into the fake marriage. Given his early (and some of his subsequent) behavior, I thought I'd have a hard time liking Sebastian, but he's so well written that his complexities and insecurities come through and he is, in spite of his own best efforts, deeply sympathetic. I get what Rook sees in him. And Rook is amazing--strong, kind, unbelievably hot-- everyone gets what Sebastian sees in him. There's a beautiful friends-to-lovers storyline here, alongside the slightly darker take on the fake marriage trope, and it makes for a great read. This author is new to me, but I'm so glad I took a chance on this book, and can't wait for the next in the series.

This was cute and funny and had some really amazing characters in it. The story was good too but this had quite some miscommunication in it, which is one of my least favorite tropes in books and got me a little annoyed at a few points in the book.
However Rook and Sebastian had great chemistry. I loved how affectionate they were with each other, thinking they just play the part. Also their steamy scenes were great.
I also like the story with Toby. That guy really was creepy but it was fun to see him fail.
Overall I liked that book but it’s not a book I see myself re-reading because the miscommunication frustrated me.

Aww, such a sweet story!! love the fake boyfriend/marriage tropes, and the friends to lovers one.
A bit angsty at times mostly because these guys have their heads so up their own ass they can see through their bellybuttons!
I loved Rook so much, definitely my favorite character in this story. I can't wait to read Finn's book, and hopefully Jon's too.

“At times, it's so confusing the questions of the heart. You followed me through changes and patiently you'd wait 'til I came to my senses through some miracle of fate...The search is over love was right before my eyes.” ~ Survivor (The Search is Over)

Being a real friend means caring about someone when things are good or when they are bad. Rook has always tried to be that kind of friend to Sebastian although it hasn’t always been easy. Now Sebastian has asked him to marry him! Considering how much Rook loves Sebastian and always has, how can he refuse?

Sebastian considers marrying Rook a practical solution to his problem, but he doesn’t take Rook’s feelings into account. Sebastian finds Rook attractive but has always been able to remain friends but when they are together 24/7 it is a different matter altogether. The feelings Sebastian has always suppressed come to the surface causing him great consternation. In an effort to make their marriage appear more believable, Sebastian put a clause into the prenuptial agreement that prohibits outside sexual activity. At the time, it seemed like a good idea, but Sebastian did not realize how much of a problem it was going to cause. Forced proximity causes Sebastian to see how desirable Rook is and the idea occurs to him that if he doesn’t need to have sex outside of marriage, he can have it with his husband!

Rook had an inkling of how hard it was going to be to resist his feelings for Sebastian, but when Sebastian starts flirting with him and suggests that they consummate their marriage he is floored. Rook knows it is not a good idea, but he has wanted Sebastian for so long he can’t resist. Rook can hardly believe how well things are going with Sebastian both in bed and out. He is surprised that his uptight friend is so uninhibited in bed. After one particularly intense night, Rook is certain that they have turned a corner in their relationship, that their fake marriage has an excellent chance of being real and meaningful, that is until Sebastian tells him that he has decided they have become too close, that he needs some space.

This story was a rollercoaster of emotions. I felt sorry for Rook for how Sebastian didn’t consider his feelings but in a way, I felt bad for Sebastian too. Rook tried so hard to remain Sebastian’s friend, regardless of how he felt. Sebastian was stuck in denial for so long that he didn’t recognize his feelings for Rook until it was almost too late. Fortunately, they both came to their senses and were able to squeeze out the happy ending they deserved. Thanks, Sage, for finding a way to bring Sebastian and Rook together.

I'm such a sucker for fake relationships and the silly "need this marriage to appear real" to fulfill some ludicrous will. I just love this trope, and this book has it great. It also has unrequited love, which I also adore, especially in this context. All around a serious trope hit for me!

This was an adorable story, I loved both Sebastian and Rook as characters. They both felt distinct throughout. I found it very amusing how bad they were at communicating despite theoretically talking to each other. Finding out perfection

This was just such a cute fluffy story, but one with some solid emotional range for the set up. Definitely a win.

Sebastian Hale, a lawyer and Cameron Rook’s best friend, needs to get married before he turns 30 according to his parents’ Will to be entitled to his inheritance. He needs the money to help his brother Jon now that his cancer had returned. And if he wasn’t married, his inheritance would pass to his jerk cousin, Toby. So at 7:00 a.m., Seb is pounding on Rook’s door and dragging Rook to his closet looking for a suit. Rook has no idea what’s going on and, as a tattoo artist, he really doesn’t need a suit for work like Seb does. Finally Seb said he was getting married. In shock, Rook tried to congratulate him, but instead asked who the lucky guy was. He was not expecting to hear, “You are,” and he walked out of the room.

Seb chased after and explained that Rook was the only believable one to marry since they spent so much time together. Marrying a stranger would let Toby have evidence of the sham and would risk Seb’s losing the inheritance. So Rook finally agreed. Seb even wrote a pre-nup so that Rook would get 20% of the inheritance whether they divorced or not, which they would do after the stipulated year. Rook insisted Seb propose to him before he signed the pre-nup, and Seb had surprised him with a ring. But this was bittersweet because Rook has always been in love with his friend for many years. At a party the night of Seb’s graduation from law school, Rook tried to tell him how he felt about him, but Seb, oblivious that he was referring to them, had stated clearly that he was not interested in a relationship, with anyone, ever. He could never live up to romantic expectations; he could never express how he felt and dreaded rejection. He never recognized the pain in his friend’s face as he reminded him he was always his closest friend. And neither realized they were not understanding what the other was trying to tell them.

The marriage was quickly accomplished and Seb now had to tell Rook about the parts of the pre-nup Rook hadn’t read. He showed up with packing tape and told Rook he had to move in with him within the week. Rook’s only hope was plenty of dating to keep him distracted since avoiding Seb would now be impossible. Except for the “fidelity clause”, which meant there would be no tension relief allowed! Only the news that Jon’s cancer was back and they could not allow Toby to find out their marriage was a sham kept Rook from choking Seb. But he did feel the sting of betrayal at being deliberately misled. Could they last a year?

I am so glad Seb had Rook in his life to give him a bit of balance. Rook is loyal and kind. He understands Seb as no one else does. Their interaction will pull the reader right in because it is so realistic and full of emotion. Grab your copy and go on this wonderful journey with them as they find themselves in each other. Will the marriage last when the year is over? It’s anybody’s guess .

Down on One Knee was a sweet read!

Here is the breakdown:
- Characters: they were likable and complimentary. I liked Rook's character best but Sebastian's personality was appreciated as well. I enjoyed the fact that they had distinctive traits, almost polar opposite. Sebastian comes off as icy and stoic, when Rook is sociable and easy-going. Liked their friendship as well.

- Supporting cast: Well, Sebastian's family is complicated so family drama is on the rise. Loved Jonathan, loooooved Finn and Jules. Fingers crossed to have a book about Finn and Jules :D
To be honest, I was more excited about these two than our main MCs.

-Prose: Really enjoyed the writing style. It flows nicely!

- Storyline: Here is a Fake relationship trope wrapped with taste and doing its job! The storyline was structured and not developing too fast. Though, the resolution felt too fast and way too easy.

- Tension: It runs high for a great number of pages as you expect shit to hit the fan at every pages. You know it's only a matter of time before the truth says hello! So I was gladly entertained with the tension, not boring at all!

-Drama: And the winner in the category of Best Couple who cannot communicate properly is discerned to...... Sebastian and Rook!! Well, let's be clear, if they had talk and put everything on the table straight away, we would not have a book at all. The whole drama is basically based on the sole principle of non-communication (but that's alright, Sage)! :)

- Romance: it is sweet. I loved to read both POVs and see how they are coming to the conclusion that they have feelings for each other. Though, not a swoon-worthy romance...

- Conclusion: this is where I had to take down a star because the tension crashes late in the book, resulting on a very rushed conclusion. That's such a shame because I would have loved more dialogue and unfolding but we got pushed into an epilogue straight after we have the big reconciliation. I mean, come on!! Please, cut a little more in the beginning and settle for a well-wrapped conclusion and installment for Book 2. Or add write an additional 50 pages.

A great read but if you asked me more details in a couple of weeks I might not be able to remember it.

This was the quick and light read I was expecting, but I didn't love it as much as I thought I would.

Overall, the story is enjoyable, it can be read in a couple of hours and it was sweet, hot and sad moments. A little bit of everything.

The first thing that rubbed wrong with me was Sebastian. I liked him, this was not the issue... But I feel he's not a consistent character. First he's described as serious, not overly emotional and even kinda cold. When he proposes Rook he looks dominant in a way, a natural leader... But then they marry and the character changes 180°. He blushes easily with Rook (which I loved but, again, isn't consisten with how the character was depicted), he's obviously jealous, very attracted to Rook and easily swoon.

I mean... I get the marriage changing things between them SLOWLY, it making them see things under a new light. But Sebastian's change was too much too soon, and I can't believe they have been besties for 19 years and none of them realize how Sebastian feels for Rook with how easily he succumbs to his charms lol

If you turn a blind eye to this, their relationship is nice enough. I specially liked some scenes, like Sebastian's birthday and the Halloween party.

But there's another but... And it's that there's so much misunderstandings I can endure. I think the rejection issue was a little bit forced, but I accepted it for the good of the plot. But when the story gets to the end and both MC takes things the worst way possible it becomes too much for me.

I love fake relationships because they give easy room for the MC's to fall in love without seeing it coming and it's a pretty flexible plot. Here's the excuse to make them realize how the feel for each other and it's nice and enjoyable, but there where things that just didn't work for me.

I was intrigued by the next story since Finn and Jules seeing go click. But it looks like it will be yet another fake relationship and I just hope for the formula to be different, because I just can't stomach so many misunderstandings once.

This book is complicated and full of dramas.

Bingung mau ngasih rating berapa. Ga kebayang penderitaannya Rook selama ini melihat Sebastian berpetualang dengan casual hook upnya atau friend with benefitnya ya meskipun Rook juga tidak hidup selibat dan itu dilakukan oleh Rook untuk ease the pain atas Sebastian's rejection few years ago.

Nooo the ending was so iffy

I hardly ever rate books I read completely 4 stars but that ending just destroyed me. It was not how I envisioned it would be. *Spoiler Alert*.
The reason why Sebastian put the infidelity clause in the pren up was because in truth Sebastian had always loved Rook. Rook and Sebastian literally grew up together maybe one of the reasons why Sebastian is so devoured of emotional attachment is because he’s been let down every single time. I mean when he came out in high school Rook was straight, the scene where the high school prom it had to kill Sebastian to go to the dance alone and watch Rook with someone else. When Rook finally came out he had someone else and throughout the years he always had someone else. You might as well stab your own heart over and over till you feel nothing anymore. The fact that Sebastian also kept track of every single person Rook had dated as well.
I think for me I just wished the confession had been better stated because most of the book lead up to that point where Rook thought he was rejected 5 years ago but it was all just a big misunderstanding. I think this whole book and situation could’ve been avoided if Rook had just told Sebastian he liked him instead of using analogies.

When you need help, who better to ask than a friend of twenty years.

Sebastian Hale's brother needs help paying for his cancer treatments. His inheritance is tied up die to a stipulation - he must get married to gain access. Sebastian must also do it before he's 30. Not being a relationship kind of guy, thinking he has nothing to offer. For a delicate situation such as this, there is only one man he could ever ask.

Ask a friend - get married - get the money for his brother - get a divorce. Seems simple enough. Only one snag in his plan...the friend.

Cameron Rook has been in love with Sebastian longer than he's ever admitted aloud. Not knowing how he truly feels, Seb asks Cameron to marry him for show - help him and his brother. In exchange, Sebastian agrees to compensate Rook for this favor.
This plan is doomed to fail because real feeling will be involved. Now hey ave to live in close proximity. Communication becomes an issue and factor in meddling family.

Will they get it together to make this work for real? Wonderful debut book from a new-to-me author.

Fake marriage - What would you do when it starts getting real? A truly enjoyable book to read.

This story is told from two point of views. I enjoyed the flow of the story. It was infuriating when the 2 MCs kept suffering from miscommunication. At the same time, it was great seeing the love they had for each other even if the other person could not see it. This was truly an enjoyable book to read.

Sebastian ask Rook (his best friend) to marry him so that he would be able to claim his inheritance which can then be used for his brother's cancer treatment. They get married immediately and start living together. Initially, they agree on being friends with benefits. However, no one can control their feelings. They have both been secretly in love with each other, thinking that it was unrequited due to several misunderstandings. It takes for their fake marriage to Sebastian's family (Rook is an orphan) before they finally confessed their feelings.
