Rate this book
Explained by The FASD Workbook for Parents, Carers and Educators is designed specifically for parents, carers and teachers supporting young people with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Dr Vanessa Spiller is an Australian clinical psychologist and the parent to a young adult with FASD. She blends 20 years of clinical work with lived experiences to deliver practical frameworks and strategies to help young people and their families achieve success. The "Explained by Brain" approach utilises multiple well researched frameworks to provide parents, carers and teachers with the tools they need to better understand and support young people with FASD. An Australian first, readers will be able * better understand the impact of prenatal alcohol exposure on the developing brain and body * recognise how this impacts on young people over their entire life-span * better understand the 11 brain areas most commonly impacted by prenatal alcohol exposure * map their own child's functioning and abilities in each of the brain areas * recognise how injuries to the brain and nervous system lead to common behavioural symptoms of FASD * learn about evidence and brain based strategies and parenting approaches for managing the complex behavioural symptoms of FASD such as aggression, impulsivity, lying, stealing and more! * learn why many of the traditional approaches to parenting such as time-out, reward charts and punishment just don't work for young people with FASD * reflect on their own parenting approach and identify what works and what does't work for their individual child! * provide resources and summaries to others in their support network

Really great practical and straightforward insights for parents or caregivers of those with an FASD. I’m thankful for this book and the reminders to stay the course and reinforced things I’m already doing as well as expanded on strategies and interventions. I always need these reminders and she did a great job of consolidating things from other great works like from Malben & Greene.
