The Beautiful Barringtons #2

The Design of Dukes

Rate this book
Lady Andromeda Barrington is the most unsuitable young lady in London.

At least in the Duke of Granby’s opinion.

Granby doesn’t care for bastard relatives or tainted pedigrees and Andromeda possesses both. Nor does he like opinionated young ladies who enjoy hurling insults in his direction.

Andromeda is, in short, the most annoying creature he’s ever met.

When she arrives, uninvited, to a house party given at his estate, Granby can’t decide whether to kiss Andromeda senseless or send her packing.

Andromeda is the victim of infatuation and bad luck.

The infatuation is that of her sister for the Earl of Blythe, but the misfortune belongs solely to Andromeda after she is forced to attend a house party hosted by the Duke of Granby. She and the duke are previously, unpleasantly, acquainted. The entire party is bound to be awkward, and their mutual dislike difficult to hide. Her only recourse is to avoid the giant block of ice masquerading as a duke. Thankfully, Granby’s estate is enormous.

But instead of mutual hostility upon arriving, Romy is greeted with unexpected attraction. Insults turn into flirtation. Heated discussions become lingering kisses.

Her heart is ruined. Granby may not even have one.

And the duke has already chosen another young lady to be his duchess.

The Design of Dukes is steamy historical romance with a guaranteed happily ever after and next in the series The Beautiful Barringtons.

Kathleen Ayers has been a hopeful romantic since the tender age of fourteen when she first purchased a copy of Sweet Savage Love at a garage sale while her mother was looking at antique animal planters. To be frank, I thought the hero a bigger fool than the one from the previous book. He has so much prejudices about every single wrong in everyone that he doesn't even realize how flawed he is. I understand where he came from, how he grew up, the difficulties he went through. But that doesn't change the fact that he is still an arrogant fool.

I am biased here in my rating because I find houseparty stories to be a huge bore. I did not care much for either main characters, I was more fascinated about the hero's impoverished friend. And I missed the family dynamics. They (the heroine and her sister) went to the houseparty with their cousin that was introduced in this book. I would much have preferred that their mother was there, but okay.

The only thing I liked about this book was the fact that I can't wait to see how the heroine's sister will savage her reputation after her foolishness and infatuation to a rake that doesn't want her.

This was just lacking any real substance or even anything other than lust or attraction. I didn't ever understand why she liked him, let alone love, and same for him! A jerky hero with daddy issues. 🙄 it was a recycled plot of every historical I've read with nothing fresh about it. Writing was serviceable for me, but the overall story (which there really wasn't one) and especially the romance, was super lacking.

I don't know how I feel about this book, mainly due to the hero. I wasn't entirely convinced by the shift in him, the author did well to show how ideas people are socialised into can be difficult to change but there was just something missing in the depiction of his evolution. Plus since his father was such a douchebag I really don't get why he was trying to meet his expectations.

I liked the heroine and secondary characters.

The Design of Dukes hit the mark. In my opinion you can't go wrong when you throw a strong heroine and a cold duke together while cranking the steam level up to 100. Lady Andromeda is spirited and strong minded, despite being nobility her family is not esteemed with in the ton. The Duke of Grandby avoids scandal any kind and has chosen the perfect duchess unfortunately for him he can't seem to get Lady Andromeda out his mind. The attraction between the them sparks and catches fire. Romy, strong lady that she is, won't settle less then she deserves and pretend to be perfect. The pacing of the plot was done well and the chemistry jumped off the page. I think Kathleen Aryers is becoming an author I will keep up with and I’m looking forward to reading more of her books in the future!

Loved this couple, both have secrets. He's wonderfully grumpy and she's just wonderful. While he's enthralled by her, his prejudice causes him to walk away from her. Loved the house party setting and his friends trying to help him see the price of his bad decisions. The wonderful h does not back down and makes him work for their HEA. A favourite book.

Quick Review
- Another lovely, emotional story that I felt intensely. Kathleen Ayers, you are truly a talented author.
- I am just giddy about the fact that this one managed to meet the expectations that #1 had set. I loved everything about this book - the plot, the writing, the pacing, the characters, the development, the romance, and best of all, the emotions it garnered.
- What I found most interesting about this series is the author is unafraid to touch upon some of the very real flaws, be it due to personality, upbringing or experiences. As a reader, one is unable to make a cut and dry assessment and has to play in the shades of grey.
- This was essentially an ista-lust/attraction masquerading as an insta-hate romance between two very stubborn people. If you are able to accept that, then the romance feels believable, which I could, and hence it did. David & Romy's banter was funny, a philosophical battle of wills, raw and real. Their chemistry was palpable and a delicious slow burn. This one was less steamy than its predecessors.
- Romy was one of the best examples of quintessential strong heroines I have ever come across in this genre. She was the best aspect of this story, and I loved everything about this girl. She was independent, tenacious, a little naive, loving, supportive, true to herself, and honest.
- I had issues with David. He was such a snob, high-handed, and irritating for the most part. He refused to take responsibility for his emotions, citing the oldest excuse in the book - "my father expected high standards, and I am emulating him." The descriptor of "cold block of ice" fit him perfectly. He went on and on about Romy's unsuitability that it irritated me to no end. My heart broke for Romy. But then the author had to go and give his character some much-needed development in the best way possible, and I was irritated at my irritation with him. He was also very gentle and loving towards Romy in his weird way, so I liked him for that.
- Finally, I will say that the resolution and the ending felt very real and plausible. Very human, and not a magical HR fix of an HEA.

- Special Mentions -
The Earl of Blyth, Marquess of Haven and Lady Theodora love triangle.
The single line about Amanda's grief gave me a pang, like a physical pang.

My Recommendation
A great, emotional, well-written series that comes highly recommended by me. Absolutely looking forward to reading The Marquess Method.

An icy, swoon worthy duke...

I loved Andromeda and Granby's story!
I have a soft spot for icy, socially awkward dukes because I love watching them steadfastly deny their feelings. Especially when they're glaring across ballrooms at the object of their affection and clenching their fists in frustration.

This is another hate to love story, more on Andromeda's side.
The dude, Granby, had an erection from day 1. So on his end, it will be diskile to lust to love lool

They met like 2 years ago and traded insults. Present time, they meet again and they seem to still dislike each other. There is a house party where Andromeda (Romy) and her sister Theo are invited, hosted by Granby's aunt at his estate so we all know things are going to get sweet ^_^

Granby is cold and keep glaring at Romy who tries to avoid him. He cornered her every chance he gets, and the tension starts to build. Until it explodes with a kiss around 50%: I liked it, even if he was hot for her, the author took her time, nice!

There is another woman in the picture, not really, because Grandy doesn't care about Beatrice: she is expected to be his duchess because she is proper unlike Romy who comes from a stained family, duke and all...
So Granby keep fighting his attraction to Romy because she is unsuitable but in the end, he finally had to admit defeat. I loved that he "jilted" Beatrice at the ball where everyone was expecting him to make an announcement.

I wasn't ready for the p0rn because Granby was supposed to be cold and all, but he sure brought the warmth!
There is some groveling at the end, until Romy finally accept to take him back. Not really full mode angst, but just the right amount.
Romy pissed me off at times, especially at the end, so this couldn't end as a 5 stars book

Still a great story!

According to David Warburton, Duke of Granby, Andromeda Barrington is a most unsuitable lady with a tainted pedigree. Andromeda calls him Grumpy Granby for his demeanor. That doesn't stop either from their attraction to the other. When she arrives to a house party given at his estate, Granby can’t decide whether to kiss her senseless or send her packing.

This is the second book in the Beautiful Barringtons series. I would recommend reading in series order. The first book is fantastic and introduces Andromeda's family's past, as well as some of the secondary characters.

Granby is an ass, made uptight and bitter by strict lessons from his father. He doesn’t care for bastard relatives or messy legacies, while Andromeda's family possesses both. But attraction doesn't care about those things, and Granby wants Romy very badly. Romy is bubbling with personality with big dreams. She is fiercely protective of her family, not afraid to speak her mind, and calls Granby on his hypocrisy. The chemistry between them is combustible, their intimate scenes memorable. In the end, Granby puts the effort into working on issues from his past so he can be a better partner going forward.

Tropes: Enemies to Lovers, Opposite Attract, Secret Crush, Working Heroine (Fashion Design), House Party/Forced Proximity

David is an ass. Andromeda was wonderful, I felt much more understanding of all the characters of this book. The men in this series are so toxic and I am eating it up. I will say that David does actually do some genuine work on himself not like Tony. Wonderful book. This author is always out doing herself for me.

AUDIBLE NARRATION WAS EXCELLENT!!

I liked the banter between David Warbarton, Duke of Grandy and Lady Andromeda/Romy Barrington.

I just wish there was more romance between the couple and less angst!! They don't get together until the very end of the story. Also, the story has an abrupt ending!!

Düklerin Tasarımı (!) Ay buara kitap isimlerine taktım.

Güzel Bridgerton çakması serimizin 2. kitabını 7. kitaba basamak olarak kullandım memnunum. 7.

Will two people everything oppose find a common understanding...

Oh my!
I just loved this book!
Romy is such a great heroine, no badass amazon nor shrew chewing and spitting men at every turn. But a sweet heart and a clever mind are her weapons of choice.
She follows her dreams, she adapts her steps to the world surrounding her and she is first of all loyal to her family. They come first, even if she is not blind to their faults.
She is a kind soul with a smart mind and while it is fashion oriented, with her guidance, she offers other people a balm to their uncertainties.
It might appear vain or flighty to be so fond of appearance, but by helping some misses or ladies to find the right style, she offers their ego a boost, very necessary when you are damned a wallflower or spinster in the lenses of her world.
This is the form of art that lives inside her heart, it makes it sing and provides her with hours of joy.
David is a damaged man, broken by a painful betrayal in his youth and the many abuses of a bitter and cold father.
Even if his sire did not beat the life out of him, his words and deeds left a deep imprint in his mind. So much, it is like it has been tattooed in his skin.
Breeding and appearance are all that count.
Then why does the little termagant, who is the living proof his father was right, have taken hold of his thoughts and body. He can’t shake her out of his system.
Yet she is so wrong for him with her sharp tongue, scandal filled family and low born mother.
Their non-wooing is quite a merry chase. Despite being drawn to one another, they try to avoid one another but the pull is too strong and more oft than less David is seeking her presence.
She has become a fixture for him, but he also can not let pass her unsuitability. Why after kissing her senseless, he throws at her head, their incompatibility because of her family’s many flaws. He requires perfection, they are rotten goods.

At a time in the story, I wondered what groveling he would have to do to redeem his hurtful words and painful actions.
He is like a Mr Darcy mixed with Lady De Bourgh.
All dry sarcasms and haughty expectations when his inner soul is shaken to the core by her mere closeness.
He battles with himself for most of story, unable to keep his distances but also so set on his path.

And with Romy, he has found the right opponent, she will never be swayed even by lovely words if they are not meant. She does not compromise and wants to be accepted in all her entirety. Better be alone than to live half a life.

With this second book in this series, the author has established a wondrous legacy for the next to come. Her characters are fleshy and flawed, we root for them, cheer them or get upset for or at them.
I can not wait for the next to come, Haven is such a so full of promise anti hero, I just hope Theo will regain some semblance of wits after loosing most of them by bumping into objets and people.
A big fat 5 stars.

The Heroine
Andromeda is the daughter of a scandalous duke and a ladies companion turned duchess and a sister to a bastard brother, and a notorious rake who together own a famous gambling hell. All of which make her an unsuitable, risky bride for the Duke of Granby. But, none of that bothers Romy and she adores her family! She loves to design clothes for the ton and secretly works with a modiste friend to discreetly turn her sketches into wardrobes for the Ton. She also says what she thinks and has a bit of a temper!

The Hero
David Warburton, the Duke of Granby, is a self-righteous, pompous duke who looks down his nose at just about everybody. His father was a horrible man and Granby's mother ran away when he was just a child, leaving him to be cruelly raised by his father. Even knowing what a horrible person his father was, Granby has ingrained in him the need for propriety, marrying the perfect, flawless duchess, and carrying on the Granby legacy.

The Plot
David and Romy butt heads from the first time they meet, but, Romy finds him intriguing and Granby can’t stop wanting her. So when Romy shows up at a house party at his estate, she is ready to avoid him. However, Granby makes no secret of his desire for her and slowly their banter turns into desire. Although the Duke is willing to overlook her flaws to make her his duchess, he has no intention of her keeping contact with her scandalous family or continuing with her passion of designing clothes. When Romy realizes that he wants her, but isn’t willing to love all of her, flaws and all, she refuses to settle for nothing less. Granby must come to terms with his past and his family if he is ever going to keep Romy for himself!

Just couldn't get into the H. Typical self-absorbed alpha. He treated the h with disdain when he wasn't basically stalking her, and the h kept giving in. In particular, I didn't like the way he got semi-drunk and pawed h in front of everyone, including the woman he was supposed to marry and her family, at a ball. Just not a classy guy. He risked h's reputation at least twice but just kept focusing on his own family's reputation. We're supposed to sympathize with him because his dad was a bigger jerk than he is, but dad's dead, and for whatever reason H keeps trying to follow in his footsteps. Even though he knows what a big jerk his dad was. H acts like it's hard not to be a nasty snob.

The heroine is supposed to be strong, smart, sharp-tongued, etc., but I didn't understand what she saw in H, other than his physical assets. There was a brief moment of conversation when they connected, but the rest of the time they sniped at each other and lusted. I didn't really understand why H's morose discussion of his family led to her believing she was in love with him and he was the man she should lose her virtue to. Just because he showed some vulnerability didn't mean he was willing to change.

Of course, the H does suddenly show an about-face and they get their HEA.

I realize that romance novels require a suspension of disbelief, but I also need to believe in the characters to enjoy a book. This relationship was not built on trust or mutual values and interests but lust.

You know that Mr. Darcy proposal to Elizabeth? The, “In vain I have struggled. It will not do,” one?

Yeah, this book was basically that face-palm of a proposal. On crack.

Intense gazes. Our heroine thinking he hated her guts… and him actually hating her guts? Because how dare she be so irresistible and so unsuitable at the same time! Our heroine having too much self-respect to gaf (very Elizabeth Bennett: “I have never desired your good opinion. And you have certainly bestowed it most unwillingly.”)

He did that thing where he stared at her while talking to other people… that sh*t is catnip to me.

I read it in a day—the promise of that proposal blowing up in his face made this unputdownable. If only we'd had more on-page softness as their feelings grew. Still, the angst and drama were en pointe.

Would have given 3.5 stars but I couldn't really make up my mind if I liked hero or not.
I was not at all convinced that he loved the heroine. Felt more like he was in lust with her and possessive about her.
Their patch up was again disappointing because it was more sexual than emotional.
The heroine and all other side characters were likable. I liked her spunk.

This was a decent enough read- if you're looking for something quick that follows your standard 'boy hates girl, boy loves girl' formula.

I had no issues with it, but I am a sucker for stuffy, arrogant, raven haired men, so this worked for me. However, it's all fluff, so don't go into it thinking you're getting Austen. Steam was just alllllllright.

Anyway, 4 stars is deserved because, like I said, it follows a formula that I happen to love and Kathleen Ayers did a good good of retelling a story that's been told a million times before.

This book blew me away! I stayed up until 4am to finish it. This was a perfectly done enemies to lovers. The author really drew out the enemies phase. They truly hated each other for like two solid years in the book. Great banter; I laughed out loud many times. The tension was through the roof. The emotions had me in their grip the whole time.

I loved the FMC, Andromeda. She was a badass. She was smart and feminine and knew how to stand up for herself. She knew what she deserved and she was going to accept nothing less. The MMC, David, was an entitled, uptight prick for most of the novel. I kept saying out loud “who tf does this guy think he is?” He fell hard for Andromeda and he fumbled hard, too, Mr. Darcy style. But his redemption arc was well done. Actual change of perspective and behavior, not just a Big Romantic Gesture.

The secondary characters are awesome. Turns out, this is a series so I guess I know what I’m doing for the next few weeks.

OMG. I loved this book. I read 415 books last year. Of those 415 books there were 2 books that I read that were the best of all the them. A Kathleen Ayers book was one of those.

I've read over 100 books already this year. This is the best book I've read so far.

I loved these characters, this story and just everything about it.

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED!!!
