He guards a secret. She means to discover it. Cole Barton is a sentry, living alone at the edge of a lake, keeping away all who would run afoul of the monster that lurks beneath its depths. At least, he keeps all away until Jude Drake arrives and refuses to be run off. The sexy, powerful, gold dragon shifter is more than a match for his own giant beast, and she seems intent on uncovering the secrets he wants to keep hidden. Even more unsettling, the lake monster is calling her, wanting to use her to break free from the sorcery that imprisons him. Cole would never allow his old leader to do that to any woman, but he’s particularly insistent that Jude not fall prey to the monster’s trap. Something about the gold dragon calls to Cole’s soul. The lake monster can’t have her. Cole will see to it, even if he has to deny his own heart and push Jude away. Never again will he lose anyone he cares about to the monster. Jude Drake knows why her cousin keeps sending her off to settle trouble around the country. Two gold dragons are too many for a single territory. Jude wants to settle down, though. She’s tired of her nomadic life, tired of cleaning up problems she had no part in making. She needs her own ground to rule, and with this lake territory she’s come to, she thinks she might have found it. The ground speaks to her, and she can see herself putting this broken clan back together. This is where she belongs, she’s sure of it—on this lakeshore, with this surly cabin rental manager. Now if only she could convince the man and the land to give up their secrets and let her make her place here, she’s sure she could be happy. Cole is the first book in Emilia Hartley’s Keepers & Legend series. Like all Emilia’s books, this one is steamy romance with a strong female lead, a super-hot male shifter, and a satisfying HEA. It can stand alone but is even better when read in connection with the others.

Dragons? Yes, please!

I really enjoyed the book, so I'm gladly giving it 4 stars. I found it an easy, fast-paced read, the book was short enough (140 Kindle pages) that it would be hard to get bored.

One of the things I loved about the book were the main characters. Seriously, they were a breath of fresh air, not the usual for PR "damsel in distress and her protective alpha male" type of characters.

Cole is a grumpy and brooding hermit, struggling with the guilt over *something that happened with his clan*, but this is a main heroine Jude whom I liked quite a lot, she is a real kick-ass, strong-willed and a bit crazy dragon woman (It seems I have a special love for characters named Jude).

description

You know that "Kick his ass baby, I got your flower" meme? This is a perfect description of Cole and Jude's dynamic.

🔥🔥🔥

The book is quite "tame" compared to some paranormal romances, which was more than ok with me. But don't get me wrong, it was still full of sexual tension and not without one particularly steamy scene.

Cole, Keepers of the Lake, book 1

Not what I was expecting at all, but brilliant nonetheless! What a start to a new series!
Jude Drake is a gold dragon and a cousin to Jasper, King of the Aurum Court. Her cousin has asked her to investigate a missing Dragon Clan, she travels to an isolated lakeside and rents a small dilapidated cabin.

Cole Burton is a Dragon with a secret, for the past 10 years his mission has been to keep all comers from his isolated lake shore. He has spent his time alone and isolated to protect shifters and humans from the secret he keeps. He was not expecting his brooding isolation to be disturbed by a beautiful, stubborn and powerful golden Dragon woman!

I thoroughly recommend this book and personally I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Gold dragon Jude Drake has been sent by her cousin Jasper to investigate the mysterious disappearances of a dragons, and she finds grouchy loner dragon Cole Barton – and a mystery. She has to find out what’s going on in the lake that Barton lives beside and report back to her cousin. It might have been a simple task, if her dragon hadn’t decided that it likes the land the lake is on – and Cole Barton as well.

Cole is fun read! It’s is the first book I’ve read of Hartley’s, but I had no trouble orienting myself in the story or enjoying the world that the author has created. I love all the dragons, the mystery of the lake, and all the characters introduced. The romance between Cole and Jude is exciting and hot, and the mystery of what’s going on in the lake Cole is guarding is intriguing, even thrilling, until the last twists are played out. I did find some elements of the story a bit repetitive, but it wasn’t enough to pull me out of the story or prevent me from enjoying the world-building and the relationship that develops between Cole and Jude. They’re both great characters that you know from the first can give each other everything that they need. I particularly enjoyed how the author worked Jude’s dominance into the story, and the fact that the story had some very interesting twists and turns along the way.

Cole is an exciting book, and I love that it feeds into Hartley’s previous books and sets up heroes for the future books in this particular series, as it promises not only a lot of books already available to read, but a few great ones to look forward to. I’m eager to read more of this author’s work!

Can She Save This Clan?

Cole has spent the last 10 years guarding the shores of Lake Superior and keeping the Dragon Alistair trapped below its waters. He is all that stands between humanity and Alistair. His clan was destroyed when Alistair tried to kill the humans so he could take over the world. He knows it’s only a matter of time before the prison made by Sybil, a witch, gives way and he can feel it getting weaker as she gets closer to death.

Jude is sent to Lake Superior by her King, Jasper, to see if she can find out what happened 10 years ago to the missing dragons. Her dragon immediately knows the surly Cole is her mate but he refuses to have anything to do with her. He is hoping she will go away, hoping to save her life. He knows the only way to save Alistair is for him to find his mate, but he knows Jude isn’t it, because he fears she is his mate. Stubborn Jude isn’t about to give up and slowly wears Cole down until he gives in to his attraction and he claims her. Can they work together to keep the monster in the lake contained before it destroys them?

This is the first book of the series and what a great start! I can’t wait for the next one!!

Wow! There was a big twist I did not see coming at all. I thought the story was going a certain way, then it wasn't. I was unprepared and that made it so much better.

Cole lives alone in isolation so that he can guard the world against the creature in the lake. He was once part of a dragon clan, but his self isolation began 10 years ago. One night a familiar witch shows up and gives him a card reading about changes coming his way.

Jade is a bit of an outcast in her family. Her cousin is king, but since she's a gold dragon as well she can't help rebelling. She's sent to find out what happened to the dragons of the lake, she never could have guessed. Cole ends up being her neighbour and he does everything he can to chase her away, of course, she's even more stubborn than him.

These two dance around one another quite a bit before admitting they can't resist what their dragons are telling them. For how dominant Jade is I was surprised how uncomfortable she was with her dragon for so much of the story. I immensely enjoyed how things turned out for her. I can't wait to see who our next story is about and how things play out at the lake.

A very interesting start to a new series by Emilia Hartley. Cole has been living alone in a small shack on the shore of Lake Superior. He has been watching over a shifter who is imprisoned in the depths of the lake there and keeping safe those who wander the shore nearby. The only person he regularly interacts with is a witch who likes to drop by and tell him cryptic things she dreamed about. When she tells him that he is about to have company and he needs to open up to them, he scoffs.

Jude is a member of a Colorado dragon clan led by her cousin Jasper (you may recognize this name!). He has sent her to rural Michigan to find out what has become of the dragons who used to live in the area. While she dreamed of a spa vacation, she finds herself in a small cabin right next door to a grumpy dragon named Cole. She is pretty sure Cole has the answers to her questions about the missing dragon clan, but he just wants her to go away.

Not going to spoil the story for you. There is, of course, much more to come. I was given a copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

Cole Barton was lonely, bitter and hopeless. His mission was to protect the lake from intruders. Guilt overwhelmed him, so he was the one who sacrificed himself to keep the threat looming over them under control. Jude Drake, powerful golden dragon, was rejected by her clan, she felt alone and had to keep under control her beast that constantly claimed what she understood belonged to her. Jude had been sent to investigate the whereabouts of the local dragon clan and her dragon seemed to feel a strong attraction towards Cole, but Jude was still struggling with her doubts. But it seemed like they could give the other what he needed. One question was raised, what were they really fighting against? Interesting how Cole and Jude had an internal struggle that affected their vision of what the future held for them both and their needs. Liked how Jude showed strength, good judgment and leadership. Mystery, magic, suspense, some violence, romance, betrayal, passion and an interesting and exciting ending to the first book. Voluntarily reviewed this copy that I received free from Booksprout and I liked.

This story had so many elements that I loved - dragons, second chances, magic, danger, mates.

The plot was exiting- need to prepare for a rematch 10 years in the making - and then we learn more. I was blown away by how complex the situation got and now really want to get my hands on book 2.

I was pulled in from the first page and read in one sitting until the wee hours of the morning. Ending was satisfying - arc felt complete knowing that it was book one and more would be revealed in next story.

I love the world that was created for the characters. Special shout out for being set on the shores of Lake Superior! The beauty of this area is celebrated wonderfully throughout the story.

I was slightly annoyed at the beginning with the first mention of what happened ten years ago. It is just mentioned, no explanation. We learn the truth organically a little bit later as Jude does, so it made sense in the story and worked to build the mystery and intrigue.

I am a fan and am eager to see what happens next.

A very good start on a new series which I volunteer to read and review via Booksprout. This story about Cole Barton, dragon, and Jude Drake, gold dragon, was a very engaging story which I found very interesting. Cole through circumstances is alone, battle scarred, and despondent guarding the territory against the evil lake monster. Jude was asked by her cousin Jasper to find out what happen to the dragons in the area. When Jude arrives she finds her accommodation is a run down cabin not a luxury hotel she expected. While moving in Jude is confronted by a angry Cole who her dragon finds very attractive. Cole finds that Sybil the witch leased the cabin to her. Angry Cole storms off. As Jude settles in she finds herself connecting to the area, if only she can get her neighbor to talk about what happen here. When a voice starts talking to her Cole knows she's in danger as his attraction between them grows, can he protect the area around the lake? I loved the interactions between our main characters, the twists and turns along with the action kept me reading this story in a brand new series I enjoyed reading.

Cole believes he isn't worthy of happiness. He sacrificed his life so the rest could have one. He guards the lake, his sacrifice, so the evil won't get out. Jude is Jasper's cousin, she has never felt like she fit in. So she takes jobs to travel all over. Jasper sends her to the lake to check on the dragons there. But Jude finds more than just dragons. Things are not as they would seem. Secrets are reveal, as well as mistaken realities. Can they all recover from the past? Will the issues of the past make them realize that not everything was how they saw it? Can problems be overcome to make for a happiness for the future? I am leaving this review for having received the ARC but I do so gladly because this story is a story full of secrets and surprises. The story grabs you from the beginning and takes you on a thrilling ride. Not everything is as it seems and lessons are learned. It is well thought out and makes you want to keep reading until you are finished. This is a great start for this new series and it will not disappoint. I highly recommend this book and will be looking forward to the next in this exciting new series.

This is the first book in the Keepers & Legend series and it introduces us to a whole new world which i am sure we will grow to love like we normally do with Emilia's books This throws Cole Barton who is the guardian of the lake and the monster in it the monster is his old clan leader This monster has taken many that he loves away from him and he has no intention of it taking any more Then Jude Drake arrives she is a golden dragon whose cousin who is also a golden dragon uses to sort out problems for him (he really doesn't want another golden dragon in his realm) but Jude has had enough she wants to settle down and build a realm of her own and she thinks this lake could be perfect and the broken shifters round it could be her new clan So why does the cantankerous Cole keep trying to drive her away and what is the attraction he holds for her. Cole is quite aware that she is his mate but he also knows the monster is intending to use her to escape and he would rather break his own heart than allow Jude to be hurt, Can they find away to have a future You will have to read to see

¡What a mistake!

Cole had been looking at the lake to protect everybody about what it lied beneath it for the last ten years. His clan was disbanded and only her witch friend, Sybil, was around him. To take care of him, her cards gave him a glance of his near-coming future. He did not believe her, and now he was facing the consequences of his doubt.

Emilia Hartley began this dragons’ shifters series by placing two amazing players who were facing the struggles of being underdog all their life, and now they were together for the opportunity of changing their life. This gorgeous paranormal plot seems to start as a detective search, but it becomes full of secrecy, magic, fears, hidden desires, and surprises where sheer willpower and trust could unveil the truth. ¡A must-read book that pulls you in and never lets you go! ¡The perfect beginning of a new series that I cannot wait for its next chapter!

I agreed to receive an ARC of this book via Booksprout, and I am leaving my honest and voluntary review.

COLE, the Keepers of the Lake is a new series by Emilia Hartley. Ms. Hartley is a talented author that brings us characters that are headstrong, compassionate, funny, sad and determined.

Cole has sacrificed everything to protect his family, and others from a lurking evil. He has managed for ten years to keep everyone away from his side of the lake. That is until now. A pushy lady just moved into the cabin next door.

Jude has been sent by Jasper, King of the Aurum Court Dragons, to find out what happened to make a dragons clan go missing. So far all she has found is one solitary and decidedly grumpy and unfriendly dragon. But there is something about him and this rugged area that calls to her. But all that will have to wait until she can pry the information Jasper wants out of this guy.

Just as you think the evil is about to be destroyed, someone drops a monkey in the wrench. I can't wait to see where things go next.

Jude goes to Michigan at the behest of her King, Jasper, to solve the mystery of a missing clan of dragon shifters. When she arrives, she meets Cole, a solitary dragon shifter, who's been guarding a lake for the past 10 years. They rub each other the wrong way when they first meet. Cole wants Jude as far away from the lake as possible because of the threat that he's been guarding for the last 10 years, He's afraid that Jude will be sucked in to his problem.

Jude is a gold dragon, however, and she feels like she's found her home. Something that she never expected to feel. She also recognizes Cole as her mate. It seems that whatever is under the lake is trying to get free. Cole is afraid that Jude will succumb to the power of what's under the lake and she almost does. Only Cole's claiming mark saves her. After some ups and downs, the get a HFN ending. I can't wait for the next book to see where it goes.

This was a great start to a new series keeper of the lake, it kept you captivated throughout and did stop till the very end. Cole Barton has guarded Lake Superior for the last 10yrs and keeping the evil Alistair beneath its waters because if he gets loose again he will kill all humans and now as Sibil the witch gets closer to dying the spell is weakening and Cole cannot let that happen. Jude Drake has been sent on a mission by King Jasper to find out what happened 10yrs ago that coursed the dragon to disappear and on her arrival at Lake Superior she meets Cole the grumpy care taker that she knows is her mate but he won’t let her distract him and refuses to be pulled into the whole fated mate thing. Can these two join together and fight the evil that threatens the world while trying to keep there hands to themselves because the chemistry is off the charts but being distracted could destroy them all.

I previously read all the Aurum Court books so I knew the characters that were occasionally mentioned and what their storied were about. This story is about Cole who is from an entirely different clan and Jude who is a golden dragon and from the metallic dragons found in the Aurum Court. She's never felt at home there because only one golden dragon can be the King or Queen and her cousin is the king. To hang around could have been considered a threat. She ends up in Cole's territory when her cousin tasks her to find other dragons so he can protect them. I loved how all that Jude has been through, it has made her stronger yet vulnerable. Cole had so much pain and it was wonderful to see how he opened up and let Jude help him with his guilt.

At times the story had me on the edge of my seat. There is a plenty of action, a lot of emotional pain, some steam and some twists and turns. Although there is a happy for now, there is a lead on to what I see is a couple more stories.

Cole is a dragon shifter and has been a watchman over the lake and area where his other dragon shifter clansmen once lived. There is a secret in the lakes depths that humans and dragon shifters don't know about. Jude, a gold dragon shifter, has been sent on another mission by her cousin Jasper, the gold dragon shifter leader. When Jude arrives in Michigan, she feels that she has finally found her home with the lake and the surrounding area. She doesn't mind if Cole comes in the package deal either.. Jude's has been tasked with finding out why the other dragon shifters have left the lake or are dead. And as to why Cole is the only dragon shifter left and has been there for 10 years. The whispers of the lake pull Jude towards and into the lakes depths which don't seem very friendly. This is book #1 of the "Keepers of the Lake" series. I have enjoyed reading this authors book series and was happy that she has written another series for her readers. Enjoy!

Gold dragon Jude Drake is sent by her cousin, King Jasper, to find out where a clan of dragons has disappeared. Jude finds Cole Barton, along with a mystery to solve. Cole is lonely and grouchy, trying his hardest to get Jude to leave as he guards the lake and Alistair imprisoned there. As the witch Sybil gets older and weaker, the danger of Alistair’s escape increases. When Jude moves into the cabin next to Cole’s, he is upset that Sybil provided it for her. As Jude settles in, the land calls to her and she wants to stay. She already feels that Cole may be her mate, and he feels the same.

Jude is stubborn and refuses to listen to Cole’s attempts to get her to leave. Eventually, she overcomes Cole’s reluctance, letting him succumb to the strong attraction between them. Is he ready to claim his mate? Can he keep her safe? Will he tell her the secret of the lake and let her help him keep the Monster imprisoned?

Cole is a dragon, who sees it as his duty to protect humanity against his former leader, who is now chained by magic in a lake. He stands sentry, sending the other clan members into the world to live their lives free of the burden.
But one day, 10 years after the fight, a young dragon shifter female arrives, a golden dragon. Golden dragons are royal and completely alpha. Even if he wanted to, he could not send her packing.
When the witch, who cast the spell against the monster, calls the others back, he is shocked, as this is a sure sign, that the spell is weakening.
A suspenseful story, starting simple, but evolves into something more complex with a few surprises for the dragons as well as for the readers.
It was fun to read the book and I am looking forward to the other stories of the "Keepers of the Lake".

Who is Cole Barton? Where is he from? What does he do for a living and where is he at currently? Who is Sybil and what do we learn about her? What is Cole? Who are Jude and Jasper? Oh my, things get interesting within the first chapter of this story! Who is behind Jude's trip? What happened 10 years ago that left only Cole at the lake? Where is the rest of his family? Who is Asher? What happens when he and SYbil show up at Cole's? Who is Alistair? Who are Zane and Heath? What do we learn about everyone? What is in the lake that is angry? Why? Oh, you are not going to believe what is going on!!! I cannot wait for book 2 of the series!

Cole is a dragon with a self-imposed guard duty. One he willingly set for himself to protect those he cared for. Jude is a dragon with an attitude that she has developed while trying to find where she belongs. Jude has been sent by her cousin (Dragon King Jasper, no less) to determine what has happened to a group of young dragons that have gone missing. When Jude meets Cole she dubs him ' tall, dark, and surly (grumpy, brooding etc.). He doesn't want to have anyone around and she won't take the hint. But he cannot stay away from the golden dragon and no matter how she tells herself to ignore him she can't. What ensues is a plot full of twists and unexpected results. This looks to be a series with as much fun, angst, unruly dragons, and romance as the previous Aurum Court. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Cole is the first book in a new series that sort of follows on from the Aurum Court books so some of the characters mentioned were already familiar to me as I've read the earlier series. This one is about Jude, a gold dragon from the Aurum Court. She's been tasked by her cousin the king to search out more dragons who may need his protection.

Cole has spent the last ten years guarding the lake to keep everyone away from the monster lurking in its depths. She ends up in Cole's territory, when they first meet there is considerable tension which over time changes to attraction and then to so much more.

They both have been through much, but together do they stand a chance of happiness? The plotline is at times emotional with plenty of action, angst as well as some twists and turns I wasn't expecting. The characters themselves are interesting and have a good depth to them.

This book is linked to the Aurum Court Dragons as Jude is a cousin to Jasper and is also a Gold Dragon. Due to the dominance of Gold dragons Jude has always been on the outside kept away from lesser dragons and from her Gold dragon cousin. She feels rootless and adrift. Jasper sends her to a lake shore to find out what happened to a clan of dragon shifters who seem to have disappeared. There she meets Cole a dragon shifter weighed down by responsibility, loneliness and secrets. Jude's dragon wants the man and the land but Jude the human is not so sure of her feelings. Lots of action, magic, a witch, a monster in the lake and deep, dark secrets. Brilliant new series. Really looking forward to the next book.

A fantastic read! I love this book! Emilia did a fantastic job! The characters are well-developed and the story flows very well. Lots of twists and turns. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the book. I could not put the book down because it pulled me in from the beginning. Cole was guarding a lake where their leader was being kept because he turned on the pack. Sybil, the witch, had cast a spell to keep Alistair at the bottom of the lake. Jude appeared one day because she had been sent to find out what had happened to all of the pack. Cole didn't want to tell her anything so she started digging to find out the truth. She was getting in over her head but she was a very strong Gold Dragon. Will Jude be able to protect everyone? Grab this book today. I highly recommend it.

I voluntarily read an arc of this book for an honest review. Loved this brand new dragon series from Emilia Hartley. The story of Jude and Cole was so intense. Jude, a gold dragon who could be queen but isn’t because her older male cousin is king. She’s a drifter, cast out by her parents to protect her but lonely. Cole, left behind by his clan mates to be the protector of the lake but he’s bitter, angry and lonely. This wasn’t a book where they liked each other instantly. It was more intriguing than that. There’s a witch, a lake monster and a mystery to solve. There’s a huge twist towards the end too. The chemistry between Cole and Jude is melt your kindle hot and I couldn’t read fast enough. I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

Underwater Trouble

The author is going to take it out a different route with this particular series. Cole and Jude are interesting mix of dragon characters. Jude has never felt like she belonged anywhere and it did not help with her parents sent her away when they figured out she was a gold dragon.

Cole the other hand we really don't get much background on where he came from we start with this story of how his small clan came to be. There is something hidden in the water that's dangerous to them all and possibly the world.

Righting wrongs of the past will be the task set before Jude and Cole.

I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

This was a different paranormal and shifter romance than I've read before and I enjoyed it. Jude and Cole have amazing chemistry but he has secrets and has to keep her safe. They are pulled to each other but the danger that lurks in the lake is more pressing. I loved seeing them give in to their attraction while at the same time seeing Cole open up. I can't wait to see what comes next in this series.

This first book in the Keeper of the Lake series is well written. I enjoyed the premise of the story and the characters so far. I could not give it 5 stars because the first 46% was rather slow. However, after that it picks right up. Looking forward to more books in this series.
