Rose McKenna’s beau, Stephen Youngblood “Sy” Fenton, has headed west to be a farmer. Having laid claim to some fertile ground and begun building a house, he has written to Rose, inviting her to join him.
Nancy McKenna White is a new bride whose husband, Joshua, has caught gold fever. Josh agrees that Apple Valley, Texas, is close enough to their line of travel to make a detour to bring Rose to her fiancé and enjoy the wedding festivities.
Then tragedy strikes; only one person gets off the train in Apple Valley.
Nancy and her husband Josh were on the way via train to visit with family before continuing to California. A family boarded the car they were in and it turns out everyone in that car are exposed to cholera. The train personnel lock that car to be sure not to expose anyone else. Nancy and one other do not get sick as they were immune from having it and survived when young. Josh and Nancy's sister die but leave their request for Nancy to marry Sy who was to marry her sister. So we take the story all the way to the epilogue where we find all has gone well the way we like! It is well worth your time to read this book with wonderful people you will enjoy like I did.
This is a sweet loving mail order bride of sorts with a very sad beginning. This tale was written by Elissa Strati. She has done a great job with the plot and the characters. Josh and Sy were best friends and Nancy and Rose were sisters and all grew up as great friends.Josh married Nancy and Sy moves to Texas to claim land, short time later he an Rose are engaged to marry. Sounds a bit confusing but as time goes by you will see how Josh, Nancy and Rose travel by train to Sy in Texas. Disaster along the rails creates a great disaster and only one lives to see Sy in Texas. You may shed a tear or two, but will love discovering the happily ever after.
Nancy is strong and fiercely independent but even she is tested by the horrendous train journey and the losses suffered. Watching as Nancy and Sy mourn together, lifelong friends they understand each other and their losses as no-one else can. Can that be enough for a future together? I liked both Nancy and Sy, they are calm, loving characters who are easy to relate to, a heart breaking but beautiful tale.
I rarely write reviews. This books was certainly deserving of my time and attention to do so. The characters were wonderfully created and the story complete. Many times short books leave something to be desired by the plot this book has no shortcomings. My favorite passage was the conversation with Nancy and the gambler and the doctor. Such a fun and happy book.

I really enjoyed Nancy McKenna White married Joshua White ,Josh has gold fever so on their way to the gold fields they agree to stop off with her sister in Apple Valley Texas to vist her family and bring Rose McKenna too her fiance Stephen Youngblood (Sy) so they can be with Rose and Sy for there wedding and spend time with all there family . I recommend Teens and up .
This is an enchanting story of two sisters and their men who are near brothers. One sister has married Josh and as they are on their way for the sister, Rose, to marry Cy tragedy unspeakable happens on the train. I didn't see this plot playing out so kudos to the author for spinning things quite nicely!
A sweet romance where tragedy strikes, but those involved see each other through. I enjoyed th characters with their strengths and weaknesses that seemed to balance each other out with the help of little breaths from beyond. A plot about dealing with a situation that probably happened all too often in the past that led to
I was totally engrossed in this book. I fell in love with Nancy, Rose, and Josh from the very beginning and Sy and Angelique as they joined the story. Elissa Strati has given us a sweet story with strong characters. I believe we need the “Mother’s code” back in our society. Sorry, you have to read the book to know the “Mother’s code”.
I found this to be a wonderfully sweet story. Nancy is a young woman who loses both her husband and sister to cholera while traveling together on a train to Texas. Then discovers she's expecting a baby! Reunited with her parents and her sister's fiance she faces a new life.
Yes I liked reading 50% of the book about the tragedy how it started and everything that happened to them. After reaching destination everything was in third POV which made me lose interest and feel disconnected. At first I wanted to give it 3 stars but the note at the ending of the book made me change my mind it is good book. I just hope her writing gets better.
Making plans for the future did not become the path Nancy would be following. Facing disappointments, the present had to be dealt with. The writing of the story is straight forward and gently handed.
This is an OK mail-order bride romance, with likable characters, but I did have a few issues with it. It gets 2.5 stars from me, rounded up to 3 stars.
First, it was just too short to have enough character development. I wanted more backstory on both Nancy and Sy.
I liked Sy and Nancy, but thought it was a little weird that they kept thinking they were seeing his fiancee Rose and her 1st husband Josh, who had both died in a cholera epidemic. It was also odd that they both thought that Rose and Josh were leading them to get married. I get that Nancy needed a husband, and Sy needed a wife -- but didn't they also need time to grieve?
I also thought that Nancy and Sy were a bit too perfect. They never did/said anything even slightly inappropriate or bad -- which was just too unrealistic for me.
My main problem with this book, though, was that it was incredibly hard to follow. There were so many characters, which were all introduced rapidly, and it was really difficult to keep them all straight. I thought the author should have concentrated on the main couple and their immediate families, and left most of the detail of the minor characters out. For example, I didn't need details on all the people who were affected by the cholera epidemic, and I didn't need names/stories for the customers that came into Nancy's store. I only needed to know enough about the minor characters to understand their role in the overall romance. I kept wondering why there was so much detail on so many minor characters.
This is a clean romance, with nothing but kisses. If you only want to read romances that do not include sex scenes, this one might work for you.
My rating system is below. 1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it. 2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws. 3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating. 4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one. 5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
I liked the story. Learning new Words, real situations ( cholera, train travel), Story line good, clean HEA. Peaceful feeling when I finished the book.
