Starting over was never going to be easy, especially as he's looking for the one thing she can't give ... the truth.
Set in the heart of the Australian countryside comes a compelling romance with a touch of suspense from bestselling author Mandy Magro.
Savannah Garret remains resolute in testifying as the sole eyewitness in Brisbane's most dangerous criminal case. For safety, the police have furnished her with a new identity and instructions to keep to herself. With a shiny new driver's licence in hand and job as a barmaid lined up, this die-hard city girl finds herself stepping off a bus and into the desolate street of the small country town she's now to call home.
Ash Sullivan has it all, money at his fingertips, his own property, and a successful chopper mustering business. But when it comes to love, he's failed miserably. Bitter experience has taught him that if he is ever lucky enough to meet a special woman he can fall for again, she has to be upfront from the get-go, no matter what.
These are two people, as different as chalk and cheese, who were never meant to meet until fate intervened. Will they grow to be the person each other needs? Or will their differences drive them apart?
Mandy Magro lives in Cairns, Far North Queensland, with her daughter, Chloe Rose. With pristine aqua-blue coastline in one direction, and sweeping rural landscapes in the other, she describes her home as heaven on earth. A passionate woman, and a romantic at heart, she loves writing about soul-deep love, the Australian rural way of life, and all the wonderful characters that live there.
Savannah Garret is determined to see her best friend’s killer go to jail, Jimmy Biloti is a dangerous man and despite him being locked up and she may never feel safe. The detectives working on the case assure her with her new look, identity, and moving to a country town and she will be perfectly fine. After a long bus trip she arrives in Blackwater QLD and makes her way to the pub. Here she meets her new boss Jacko, his daughter Jessie and Savannah's the pubs new barmaid.
Ash Sullivan has worked hard, he owns his own property Silverton Station and runs a chopper mustering business. He’s been very unlucky in love, years ago he had his heart shattered and he has no one to share his beautiful property with. All the single ladies in Blackwater have been trying to get his attention since he arrived and have had absolutely no luck. The accommodation at the pub is pretty basic and Ash has an empty renovated cottage on his property; he offers Savannah a place to live, here can she truly relax and feel safe? Ash and Savannah are very attracted to each other, she can’t tell anyone about her true identity and not even the man she falls head over heels in love with.
Savannah’s Secret is a story set in a small Australian country town, the local characters are likeable and extremely funny, and it has elements of romance, suspense and danger. I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and Harlequin Australia in exchange for an honest review and four stars from me.
‘He had his skeletons too, so he understood her not wanting to talk about the past, but something told him there was way more to her story than what she was letting on.’
Mandy Magro is one of our country’s most giving storytellers in the field of rural romance. This gracious Australian author gifts her readers with a brand-new rural treat. Savannah’s Secret is a city girl to country escape tale, with a soft sprinkling of romance and a whisper of suspense. It is a story that I approached with an eager heart.
Savannah’s Secret is essentially a story of recovery and starting over. Truth, lies, secrets and the past all come into play as Savanah Garret is placed into witness protection. With a new identity and a new home, Savannah has been advised by the police to remain closely guarded. As Savannah begins her new job as a barmaid in her new town, she strives to keep to herself. But a local man by the name of Ash Sullivan soon captures Savannah’s attention and heart. We learn that Ash has his own tragic back story but Ash has hopes that he will find love again. It is clear that there is difference and resistance from both parities in this game of love. Can Ash and Savannah learn to trust again and let love into their lives?
Mandy Magro is a much-loved Australian author, who continues to deliver heartwarming stories of love and strength to her loyal fan base. If rural stories are your cup of tea, you need to pick up a Mandy Magro novel. Savannah’s Secret is a great starting point.
This time around Mandy Magro tackles a strong danger and suspense based narrative thread by placing her lead in a witness protection program, following her involvement in a criminal case. I liked this intrigue focus, it certainly surrounded the novel with a thick air of tension. I felt quite on edge of the duration of this tale and I genuinely cared about Savannah’s safety. Savannah’s welfare was of my central concern as I made my way through the troubled waters of this latest novel by Mandy Magro.
Savannah is a well rendered character. I liked Savannah from the opening pages of this novel and I greatly admired her fighting spirit, as well as her very determined mindset. A loyal woman with a strong heart, I really wanted Savannah to settle in a loving relationship. When Ash arrives on the scene, I enjoyed the frivolity, resistance and chemistry between the lead couple. Ash was a great male primary character. I found much to love about this hardworking man. Ash cuts a solid figure and he has an honest heart, despite his sad background in the love department. Mandy Magro shows us what she is made of in terms of her approach to romance. We have a burgeoning relationship that begins and ends with trust issues. For those who enjoy a touch of heat to their love stories, this one will definitely hit the spot.
I enjoyed taking a trip to Far North Queensland as I kicked back and inhaled all this breathtaking rural romance had to offer. I am really missing the chance to travel, so Savannah’s Secret seemed to fill my travel void. Mandy Magro is passionate about her country’s landscape and nature in general, which aids her picturesque setting descriptions. Plenty of vividly presented sights, sounds, smells and references to flora and fauna are covered over the course of this novel’s journey. With such a vibrant setting base, combined with interesting characters and an intriguing overall story arc, Savannah’s Secret was a gratifying read.
A gripping country escape awaits the reader in Savannah’s Secret. It is time to pick up this extremely readable rural romance tale if you are a fan of passionately told Australian stories.

Savannah’s Secret is book #48 of the 2021 Australian Women Writers Challenge
Mandy Magro never disappoints me with one of her stories, I love visiting the outback towns and meeting the fabulous characters that she brings to life on the pages, and this time we meet Savannah and Ash both have been through the ringer so to speak and now is it time that they find true love and happiness in a great small town in the outback, with some awesome pets to get to know.
Kayla Robinson is starting a whole new life as Savannah Garret after testifying in a court case to see a murderer go to jail, a kingpin in the underworld who took the life of her best friend, she is a city girl and starting fresh with secrets that will have to be kept forever is not an easy task, but she has a job in the pub at Blackwater Queensland and is going to do what she has to, too stay safe looking for love is not on her radar, but her first meeting with local Ash Sullivan has her heart fluttering.
Ash Sullivan is good looking well respected and owner of a property and a successful business he is doing well except for the one thing that he has always desired a partner someone to love and a family. He has learnt from past experiences that keeping secrets is not good for any relationship and honesty is one his most important needs and when he meets the new barmaid in town there is a pull towards her and as they get closer their friendship grows but he has a feeling she is keeping secrets.
I loved both Savannah and Ash, Ash the best gentleman, caring and loving and Savannah shows such strength after all she has been through and their hearts are melded together but secrets can break them apart, but when danger arrives in town Ash is there for her and nothing will keep them apart now. This is fabulous story that I highly recommend filled with emotions it is heartwarming and moving a sensual story of two people who deserve love and happiness. Oh I did love Pork Chop you will have to read the book to meet Ash’s wonderful pet. Thank you Mandy Magro for another fabulous story.
My thanks to Harlequin AUS for my copy to read and review
The power of trust, upholding the truth, and the importance of friendship are key concepts in this light-reading story by Mandy Margo. Savannah Garret is in witness protection in Blackwater, Queensland. Having worked in the nightclubs of Sydney, she finds herself pulling a beer or two in the rural pub as her new persona. Enter, Ash Sullivan. Both characters are carrying life-changing secrets, and I really enjoyed how Margo revealed Ash's backstory.
Despite the predictability, the story was well-written and an enjoyable holiday read. It depicted Queensland nicely, small-town living honestly, and likable characters. I was more than happy reading this book.
Set in a remote rural town, Savannah’s Secret is the coming together of two people with tragic pasts and overcoming the secrets that are holding them back.
Savannah Garrett is in witness protection after testifying in a criminal case; the trial over, she’s sent to start her new life in a small, rural town – a sharp contrast to her high-flying city life. Despite being outside her comfort zone, she finds the charm in working as a bartender in the local pub and getting to know the people in the town, especially Ash Sullivan, local chopper musterer and town enigma. He has his own tragic history that has kept him from pursuing relationships. Until he meets Savannah, and then the two have to find a way to overcome their own pasts and see if they can be what the other needs.
This was a very easy reading experience. Savannah’s Secret is the second of Magro’s books that I’ve had the pleasure of reading, and I enjoyed it a lot.
Despite being a self-confessed city girl myself, I have family who live in rural areas, and there’s a level of comfort I find in rural romances, as well as a sense of idealism. Savannah is used to living a completely different life in the city, one that’s shattered when she is the sole witness to a crime against her best friend, and so not only is she having to spend time adjusting to her new life, new name and new location, but she’s also grieving. This makes her reluctant to open up to people about her past (especially since there are parts she’s can’t talk about for safety) and even harder to form connections.
Ash manages to weave his way under her skin. He’s a genuine nice-guy who was raised to treat women respectfully. He flirts, but never pushes Savannah, and tries to be understanding when he realises she’s holding a lot back. There were a few instances where it felt like he was a bit black-or-white about Savannah when her truth is finally revealed, and part of that ending and resolution felt a bit rushed, but overall I enjoyed their playful and fun dynamic.
Standouts included many of the side-characters – Jacko, the local publican trying to keep his pub afloat, Ash’s parents who step in to look after his property and animals when he’s away working, and Pork Chop, Ash’s pet pig who is a clearly beloved family member. I also truly appreciated the descriptions of the landscape, and especially the little house that Ash rents out to Savannah so she has somewhere to stay. It honestly sounded beautiful.
This is a book that deals with loss, change and finding love. Magro weaves all of it together into one compelling read.
Thanks to Harlequin for sending us a copy to read and review. Mandy sure knows how to write a rural love story, one that breaks your heart and slowly puts it back together. Savannah Garrett has arrived in the town of Blackwater with just the bags she holds. She has been forced to relocate in the witness protection scheme as she is the one person who has testified in a criminal case. With a new identity, told to keep to herself and a job as a barmaid, Savannah hopes this will be a new start. But her attraction to a very handsome local is impossible to ignore. Ash Sullivan is successful, has a lucrative mustering business and his own property. But for the unfortunate unlucky in love man the only thing missing is someone to share it all with. Ash is still waiting for that special lady and after meeting Savannah, sparks fly but she is a mystery and seems to be hiding something. Two very different people who cross paths and destiny is about to interfere. Mandy nails it once again and rewards readers with a warm and tender, touching and heartfelt romantic story that will captivate and engage you. A beautiful passionate tale for everyone to enjoy that incorporates the stunning landscape, the harsh weather and the temptation of nature all told from the heart. A writer who loves love and is big hearted and continues to churn out outstanding stories with loveable characters, personality plus furry friends and sometimes with a splash of danger and intrigue. The Queen of rural romance remains at the top of the game.
“Savannah’s Secret” is a rural romance with a touch of the thriller about it. It’s a novel with absolutely no surprises in it, but there’s a charm and warmth that makes it an enjoyable read. It’s the sort of book you curl up with when you want an undemanding, comforting read.
Savannah is newly placed in the witness protection program. A city girl, she’s been sent to remote Blackwater to work as a barmaid. Within hours of arriving, she feels a spark of attraction to Ash Sullivan. He, however, is strongly set against ever again having a relationship with someone who keeps secrets. And it’s obvious that Savannah has quite a lot of secrets. So what are they going to do about the increasingly mutual attraction?
I must say that Ash’s objection to secrets didn’t really ring true to me. He’s deliberately not told anyone in Blackwater about the major event in his past that sparked his objection to secrets. And really, isn’t that keeping secrets? It also doesn’t seem a particularly likely reaction to that particular event.
However, that minor objection aside, the push and pull between Savannah and Ash is vivid and believable. Both feel a strong attraction, but both see good reasons to resist it. Both being pretty decent people, they’re also concerned about the impact on the other if they succumb to an attraction that seems to have significant risks attached to it.
Both characters are painted with warmth and empathy, and their courtship is undramatic but charming. Despite the slightly outlandish situation, there’s a realistic feeling about the relationship. Although the outcome is never really in doubt, the obstacles between the two of them (especially) their feelings about the obstacles) are particularly credible.
There were some minor flaws – I thought Magro leaned a little bit heavily on Savannah’s ignorance of various slang expressions a weak way to separate city dwellers from rural, for one thing. I don’t think this is Magro’s strongest novel; there’s nothing major wrong with it, but there are a few small things that didn’t sit well.
I found this an exceptionally predictable novel, both in the romance elements and the thriller elements. I was less than a dozen pages in when I knew what would happen in the final chapters of the novel. That said, it was still an enjoyable read. It’s not a suspense novel, and doesn’t pretend to be.
This is a novel that’s aimed squarely at fans of romance, and in particular rural romance. For those readers, this will be a satisfying read. The main characters are well drawn and there’s realistic tension in their relationship, along with the guaranteed happy ending that romance fans look for.
Savannah Secret is a rural romance book with high emphasis on the romance. I had hoped for a bit more crime and suspense in this one when I read the synopsis but sadly for me it wasn't to be. This is definitely a book for the romance lover who likes a bit of steam - that is not really me. I have read books from Mandy Magro before and enjoyed the story. This time I found myself being able to predict the twists and the ending which left me disappointed.
Savannah Garret is starting a new life in witness protection after helping police to put away her best friends killer. A new name, haircut and life in Blackwater, Queensland as a barmaid is a far cry from her old life in Sydney. She wants to stay under the radar and blend in. And then she meets Ash Sullivan, the towns most eligible bachelor and sparks fly. But she is unable to tell him so much about her life and he struggles with the fact that she is keeping secrets from him. His last serious girlfriend did the same and that ended in tragedy.
Thanks to Harlequin Australia for sending me this book. I am clearly not the target audience for this one and I can see that alot of people loved it
[I read the paperback version, not the Kindle version as listed as there was no other option listed.] I probably shouldn't have given this a rating as I am obviously not the target reader here. While I enjoy a good Australian rural romance, Mandy Magro's 'Savannah's Secret' had no real substance for me. A glamorous woman is sent to an isolated country town on witness protection where she meets a hunky cattleman. They are attracted to each other, but he has been burnt before so cannot stand lies, whereas she has to keep her secret from him. That is the entire plot. For page after page in this 300-page book they are attracted but must only be friends. It is pure fantasy: He is handsome, charming, has a successful chopper mustering business, has a fabulous homestead, a gentleman who becomes a 'bad boy' when he puts on a leather jacket and rides a Harley, loves animals, loves his mother, and is even described in such awful prose as ' a muscular mass of manliness'. She is always described as 'absolutely stunning' with tight-fitting t-shirts and figure-hugging jeans, a tiny waist, curvy hips, a beautiful smile and a silky voice like (I kid you not) 'a nip-of-American-Wild Honey-sliding-down-the-throat'. We're seriously into Mills & Boon territory here. And the constant Australian bush lingo was embarrassing - who actually talks like this? I also thought 'cool' and groovy' were back in the 60s, but they kept cropping up here. I was determined to finish the book to see if I was mistaken, and every now and again I was pleasantly surprised with some lovely descriptions of the bush, the weather, a sunrise, and various animals. As I said, not for me, but I'm sure it's a hit with many readers.
Savannah's Secret is a fantastic Australian Romantic Suspense book set in rural Australia. When Savannah Garret became an eyewitness to a Brisbane Criminal Case, her life changed forever. Savannah, for her safety, had to have a new identity and go into hiding in a small rural community. Savannah found work at the local pub. However, Savannah did not except to meet Ash Sullivan, who runs the local chopper mustering business and likes people upfront with him. The readers of Savannah's Secret will continue to follow Savannah and Ash to find out what happens.
Savannah's Secret is another fantastic book by Mandy Magro. I had no trouble engaging with this book from the beginning. I enjoy that Mandy Magro highlighted issues that can affect anyone. Savannah's Secret is well written and researched by Mandy Magro. I love Mandy Magro's portrayal of her characters and how they intertwine throughout this book. I like Mandy Magro description of the settings of Savannah's Secret's settings, which allows me to imagine being part of the book's plot.
The readers of Savannah Secret will understand the role of helicopters during mustering time in Australia. Also, the readers of Savannah Secret will learn about having a pig as a pet.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but I do always enjoy Mandy Magro's writing style and her interesting characters with strong personalities.
After testifying against her old boss and getting him jailed, Savannah Garret is relocated with her new identity to a small country town where she is to start her new job as a barmaid at the local pub.
On her first shift at the pub she meets Ash Sullivan, the local bachelor who wants to meet an honest and truthful partner with no secrets. How can two people with such different backgrounds ever possibly get together?
Mandy Magro has done it again, she has written a book full of heart, suspense and it left me with a big smile one my face by the time I reached the end!
I love her writing style the way you are drawn into the environment and so easy visualise the surroundings in which the characters exist.
I really enjoyed the suspense as it built wondering if it was just Savannah’s paranoia or if her true identity had been discovered, even noticing at one point I had been holding my breath!!
Loved Loved it what can say Mandy has done it again. Another fantastic read. Kayla Robbison works at Sydney night club she grew up in foste care not knowing her mother or father. She witness her bestfriends murder Jasmine and testfies asgainst her boss the killer and part of a big crimmal case. She given a name change and instructions by the police to safe. She is now Savvanah Garret Will finsih
Trust, truth, friendship and honesty are central themes of Savannah’s Secret, Mandy Magro’s latest Australian rural romance. Savannah Garret, a.k.a. Kayla Robinson, and Ash Sullivan are both strong and appealing characters, who gel as soon as they meet though Savannah is carrying a huge secret, which she fears revealing. This made for plenty of sexual tension and quite a bit of angst for these two. I loved it! Also appealing was the far North Queensland setting with the lush gardens of Silverton Station. I get the sense that author Mandy Magro loves her garden as plants seem to feature in her books as a source of calm for her characters. That was certainly the case in this story and it really resonated for me because I love my own garden. While I thought the dialogue in this story was not always natural I loved the story and the way it was told. It had all the feels of a Queensland love story and, while I could do without the midges, I was more than happy reading this book.
Gripping and just what you want in a rural romance with a city girl moving to the outback. Except this city girl has no choice considering she's in witness protection. This story captures so much about small towns - community, farming, friendship, and new jobs. But the best thing was definitely Ash's pet pig. A pig acting like a dog? Classic!
An awesome story of secrets, second chance at life and love. Two people who had secrets and bitter experiences cross paths and get to know each other and fall in love and over come their fears. The small country town and its landscapes and life in the country is all described well . The small country town felt like a place for a short holiday destination for me. Love all books written by Author Mandy Magro . She has written another wonderful and engaging story , which you will want to read until you finish.
Another great book that has you hoping it all works out for the lead character! Mandy Magro writes characters, and location, beautifully, and you can really picture the characters, as you get to know them well. The difficult pasts of the characters make this book different from many of the other romance books where everything is (almost) always rosy. It's a great read, a page turner, and at times very real. Thanks NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely love Mandy's writing and stories. I really enjoyed escaping to the country town. I loved the strength in Savannah and Ash is irresistible. Savannah's one liners in the pub to some of the guys made me laugh! This book had fabulous romance mixed with crime thriller. I highly recommend this book and look forward to Mandy's next book!
Savannah's Secret by Australian author Mandy Magro is a truly lovely and heart-warming romantic saga filled with suspense and mystery.
Savannah Garret is in witness protection after testifying at her best friend’s murder trial against Jimmy Biloti, although he is currently convicted and imprisoned, Savannah feels vulnerable and is concerned of threats and intimidation against her life. Detectives issue her with a new identity and place her in Blackwater, a small country town in Queensland. Savannah is a city girl through and through and when she steps off the bus, she finds herself in a barren place that she will have to call home. She reports to the local pub where she is to become the new barmaid and meets the owner Jacko and his daughter Jessie.
Although she is still mourning the loss of her friend, her grief is subdued as she settles into her new life and finds comfort getting to know the locals. Her biggest obstacle is not being able to tell anyone her identity and being able to reveal to anyone about her past.
Ash Sullivan is the local chopper musterer, he owns his own property called Silverton Station and runs his own business which has succeeded financially putting him at comfort, the only thing missing is someone to share it with but after bad past experiences he is reluctant to put trust in anyone.
When Savannah meets Ash there is an instant attraction and a friendship forms. As time goes by, she finds the pub accommodation lacking in space and amenities, Ash offers her a place to stay in his cottage at Silverton Station. When their friendship takes a different turn, they navigate through their differences and past haunts to reach common ground together and Savannah’s secret is unveiled. There are tensions and contradictory emotions that pull on the heartstrings.
Savannah and Ash are likeable and multi-layered characters. I appreciated how the author made this relationship realistic. She didn’t rush these two into something, but slowly drew them together in a way that made sense. I adored their connection, the easy repertoire between them, their chemistry and flirty back and forth.
This book is perfect for anyone loving a great romance with suspense, it contains wonderful skillful writing and great plot development, strong connections, beautiful landscapes, and the best kind of supporting cast, including a pig! The suspense was just the right amount to add an edge to the plot.
Thank you to Beauty and Lace and HarperCollins Publishers AU for the opportunity to read and review.

I had never read any of Mandy's books till this one. I had heard good things about them. But after meeting people we both know it then became a matter of I had to find out for myself. And I have loved every page of this book. Mandy's writing style really resonated with me more than I can imagine. I am now on the look out here in Cairns for more because I am hooked. Mandy thank you for an awesome book.
This was my first read of Mandy Magro’s Work and it won’t be the last. Savannah and Ash find themselves drawn to each other after both experiencing tragedy. But the secret Savannah is hiding may just put an end to romance before it begins and out both of them in danger. This was such as easy read and I didn’t want to put it down. Loved it.
