Second title: “Everyone Gets Scared When the Consort Gets Fierce”

Qin Jiu transmigrated into a switched-at-birth novel.

She became the first daughter of a marquis’ household. She was swapped out maliciously at a young age and raised in the countryside.

The fake young mistress female lead was a rebirthed girl. The pearl of the capital, and the future wife of the second prince.

In the original novel, Qin Jiu who had been jealous of the female lead and kept going against her, trying in vain to frame her. Unaware of her lacking capabilities, she even tried to steal the male lead from her. Eventually, everyone turned their backs against Qin Jiu and she was killed by an arrow to the heart.

After reviewing the plot, Qin Jiu tore up the script–She doesn’t want to be this villainess cannon fodder! Then in the next moment, she jumped into the arms of Regent Gu Zezhi.

Qin Jiu, “Sob sob sob…golden thighs!”

Gu Zezhi, “I’ll let you hug them.” The regent of the dynasty had a fierce reputation of great power and heartless killings. Many people hated him, feared him, and wanted him dead. Then, one day, someone saw the infamously fierce regent holding a little girl in his arms with a pampering expression. Gu Zezhi kissed her hair and spoke in a gentle voice. “You can get rid of anyone you want. I’m here.”

It might be a bit cliche, but it's was hella worth it.
Other than her acting skills, and quick thinking, the MC had nothing really special about her. She didn't use a lot of modern knowledge, in fact she was too lazy to even remember the novel's storyline sometimes. BUT THAT'S ONE OF THE REASONS I LOVED HER!!
I liked that not every man in the book fell in love with her. And I loved, loved, loved the relationship between her and the ML.
And might I add, her blunt responses were hilarious. In most of these stories, the female tries to play word games to appear clever. But she was so straight forward that most people didn't know how to deal with her and it was refreshing.
Even if you don't read it for the storyline, read it for the MC's antics, her reactions, and the ML's scheming plots! They're both beautifully sinister.

It wasn't something new but it was addictive to read. I think maybe because everything was going easy for main leads and they did not fall into those schemes aligned with readers wishers which made it more enjoyable. Like good to see smart people actually have all plans laid out. Even when mc was not in the chapters I was intrigued by the war plot. Romance part could have been better as we never really get to see them falling for each other part cause it just happens.

This has enough of the swapped-at-birth genre to look familiar. It has an edge because the female lead does not allow herself to suffer. She does not adapt to the ancient customs that are harmful or degrading. The ancient times must adapt to her! That’s refreshing! She is business savvy and won’t be bullied by elders. Her partner in crime and romantic love interest lets her be herself in a time when women are supposed to be demure and blindly obey. This adds to entertainment value. 4/5

The hardest part is finding a completed English translation. There are 138 +1 extra chapters. These are excessively long chapters that already translate into 580 chapters and counting because they are being dissected to ease the burden on the translators.
I found a raw version using the Mandarin title:
穿成炮灰女配後和反派HE了
Title Translation:
“After Dressing Up as a Cannon Fodder Supporting Actress, She Had Sex With the Villain”

Then, I used the translation function in the browser to read it. This worked well. I used the website below to read the last arc:

Yet another story about the main character transmigrating into a novel set in ancient China as the cannon fodder and trying to change her fate, but I swear I'll never get tired of them. I enjoy them way too much.

The story seems like it's super long at 660 chapters, but that's because the translator split up the chapters quite a bit. The original chapter count is a little over 100, I believe. There were 3 different translators for this story, and they progressively got better. The first ~200 chapters were the hardest to read as they were riddled with grammatical errors and character names were constantly wrong, but the last translator did a wonderful job.

The story itself was pretty standard, but it's full of family and political schemes and plenty of face slapping which is exactly up my alley. Even though I enjoyed it a lot, I will admit it's not perfect. Some things didn't make sense to me, but I just took everything with a grain of salt since the setting is a novel world anyways.

The premise of the story is that the FL transmigrates into the novel as a cannon fodder character called Qin Jiu. She's actually the true daughter of the Qin marquis family in the capital, but she was switched out by one of their servants with the servant's own daughter who was born around the same time. So the servant's daughter, Qin Xun, was raised by the Qin family while the real daughter was raised by the servant's family and heavily abused in the process.

To make things more interesting, the fake daughter Qin Xun is the female lead of the novel and has actually been reborn. In her previous life, her identity as the servant's daughter was discovered pretty early on and she was forced to live a harsh life exiled with her parents. This time around, she's determined to prevent anyone from finding out her true identity as the servant's daughter and marry the OG male lead of the novel, the second prince Gu Jing who eventually becomes emperor. Unfortunately for her, our FL Qin Jiu is a transmigrator who knows the whole plot and is determined to get back what's hers, so obviously she isn't going to let Qin Xun have her way.

The romance starts early too. Qin Jiu meets the ML, Gu Zezhi, in one of the first chapters, and they constantly have interactions as the story progresses. Most stories I read in this vein take their sweet time introducing the male lead and the romance, so it was nice that he's introduced so early on here. Because of their good relationship, the FL can act more arrogantly around others as he's got her back. It's not exactly clear when they go from being friends to having feelings for each other, but I think it happens early on as the ML agrees to the marriage when he's probed by the emperor. It does take a while for them to get married though. They're engaged by the early 200s but the wedding doesn't happen until 300 chapters later.

**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**

I liked both Qin Jiu and Gu Zezhi. They're pretty smart so they can see through any schemes targeting them and turn it right back on the original person. This happens time and time again and never gets old. Where they differ is their attitude towards the people who cause them issues: Gu Zezhi acts very politely on the surface but is actually plotting against them, so his opponents don't even realize he's behind their downfall until he tells them. Meanwhile, the FL openly talks out against anyone who's against her and isn't afraid to give them a piece of her mind. There were many occasions where someone tries to use social pressure to push her down, and they're completely flabbergasted when she doesn't back down and instead escalates the issue without caring about her reputation at all.

Perhaps part of why the FL isn't afraid to speak out is because she's a transmigrator, but honestly I kept forgetting that was the case. Other than one modified bow that she helps design at the beginning and perhaps her more open attitude towards women's attitude in society, she really doesn't behave like a modern person or reference modern things much.

I had the hardest time understanding Gu Zezhi's position in the royal family. Eventually I figured out that he and the emperor are cousins (their fathers are siblings), so that's why all of the emperor's kids address the ML as uncle and eventually the FL as "aunt" after their marriage, even though she's only 15 years old XP

Something I found refreshing is that not all of the side characters are completely bad. Some of them are and go down not regretting their actions at all, but others do change and start treating the FL well. Most stories like to paint the characters as either black or white, so I appreciated that there was redemption here. For example, Qin Jiu's grandmother was initially super biased towards Qin Xun, which is understandable since she personally raised her for the last 10 years, but once Qin Jiu tells her about how QX is behind several bad things that happened, the grandmother loses faith in QX and decides to cut her off from the Qin family completely. There's also Gu Zezhi's dad, who blindly favors his concubine-born son and heir Gu Chenzhi to the point of oppressing the ML without realizing how poorly he's treating the ML. At the end he's left with no heir and no wife, and he regrets his biased actions so much..

The story moves along quickly in a logical manner and there's always something happening, so I was never bored. Initially the story focuses on the FL gaining back her position and recognition in the Qin family, then the setting opens up to include more political schemes as the fight for the crown prince position intensifies, before ending with closure for the ML's family situation and the uprising of the the emperor's rebellious half brother.

However, it wasn't perfect. I thought the FL and ML's relationship was too good right from the beginning, plus also I don't understand how they can spend so much time together when she's an unmarried girl and he's already a successful war general. Given the strict social norms in ancient China, this didn't make much sense to me at all. It was also odd to me that the Empress was able to leave the palace so many times. It's one thing if she leaves for prayers or whatnot and it's an official procession or outing, but she personally came out to pick up the FL at the beginning and on some other occasions as well. I don't think I've ever read a novel where the Empress had so much freedom, and it just didn't feel right.

Also, the author kept falling back on the idea that blood speaks louder than personal relationships. Multiple characters express the thought that they always had trouble getting close to Qin Xun, whereas they hit it off with Qin Jiu as soon as they meet her and she just "felt" like family because of their shared blood. I don't really agree with this view, so it was mildly annoying that the author brought it up multiple times.

There were many satisfying moments, usually featuring some character getting their face slapped by either the FL or ML. I'll list out some of my favorites here:

Qin Xin tries to discredit Qin Jiu by making a fake taoist priest under her control claim that Qin Jiu is a calamity and will bring disaster to her family, and but Qin Jiu gets the taoist priest locked up instead and comes out 10,000 taels of silver on top after stealing the taoist priest's hush money from QX. Plus QX gets demoted from the second princess's consort to just an untitled concubine and loses the favor of the Empress Dowager.

The princess Changning tries to force Qin Jiu into a marriage with the foreign prince Yelu Luan but it backfired on her, and she's the one who's seen by the prince with just her inner clothes on instead of the FL. She's lucky the emperor wasn't planning on granting Yelu Luan with any royal marriage.

Madam Su tries to force Qin Jiu into marrying a licentious and poor scholar who only looks respectable on the outside and ends up pushing her own beloved daughter into this marriage instead. She was touting the guy left and right in front of the FL's grandmother, but as soon as it became her daughter who had to marry the scholar, they both protest vehemently and become hysterical.

Qin Zening laughed without scruples, folded his arms across his chest, and said leisurely.

“Second Aunt, thank you so much for taking the trouble to arrange a marriage for my sister but my sister is not capable of kindly accepting this marriage. It’s also good to give it to the fourth young miss. This nephew believes second aunt two’s eyes must be good.”

I love the ML's mother. When she decides on something like getting a divorce, she stays resolute regardless of what other people say and even beats the drum herself in public. Rare for a woman to manage to stay unaffected by society's opinions like that. Plus I love how much happier she is after the divorce living on her own and not bogged down by all the Gu family baggage.

Duan Wang Fei knew very well in heart: he never said that he never love Gu Zezhi but whenever the heir was involved, he would stand by him unreservedly.

The heir ordered people to chase and kill Zezhi, but even if the evidence was conclusive, wangye believes that the heir sent those people to protect Zezhi secretly.

She was poisoned, and Wang momo just mentioned that it has something to do with the heir’s consort, and what did Duan Wangye do? He decided that the heir’s consort was innocent without even thinking about it and that someone must have schemed against the heir’s consort.

Since in Duan Wangye’s heart, only his heir apparent was important and the lives of the mother and son were insignificant, what else does she have to do with Duan Wangfu?

“Wangye,” said Duan Wang Fei with a calm expression, “I am tired, let’s divorce so we can get over this and go home.”

Duan Wangye and his heir could just live their lives.

Qin Jiu uses a small incident where a cousin from her second aunt's family tries to prevent her older brother from getting a coveted commander position and turns it into a big deal, eventually ending with the official splitting of the 1st and 2nd Qin families. Even the emperor is impressed by how quickly she can think on her feet and turn such a small incident into a whole thing. And Gu Zezhi's presence during the splitting of he family ensures that Qin Jiu and her siblings won't come out short. Instead of settling for 30% of the common family property, he convinces the family to give them 70%. I'm so glad he's on the FL's side!

Gu Jing thinks that he's successfully collaborating with the foreign prince to arrive at a peace treaty, when secretly Gu Zezhi undermines his efforts and sends someone to conquer three cities under the foreign tribe's control. This causes the foreign prince to think that Gu Jing is stringing him along and stabs him in his upper thigh so that he can't *ahem* perform again. Serves Gu Jing right! The moral of the story is, Gu Zezhi knows everything! You can't sneak anything past him XP

Gu Jing who heard this for the first time looked confused as he looked at the emperor. What’s going on, aren’t the two countries in peace talks, why are they suddenly at war again?

The emperor looked at Gu Zezhi on the side and asked indifferently, “Zezhi, you are in charge of the peace talks between the two countries. Tell me, what is going on?”

Immediately, all the people’s eyes turned to Gu Zezhi.

Gu Zezhi was calm, relax and with his always smiling face he looked at Yelu Luan who was a few steps away, and asked rhetorically, “What about the six hundred Turkic horses infected with horse plague that Prince Yelu gave to my Daqi?”

“…”

“….”

“…”

So, everyone’s eyes turned to Yelu Luan again.

Yelu Luan: “!”

How did Gu Zezhi know?!

Qin Xin tries to get the FL through her former engagement with a fool of a guy, but little did she know that her mother put her own ba zi and birthday in the engagement, so again her plan to bring the FL down backfires. Eventually this leads to her identity as the true daughter of some criminals and not the Qin family revealed too. Tsk tsk.

Hu Mingke once again sounded the gavel and came to a conclusion. “Qin Xin, whose real name is Li Erya, the daughter of Li Jinzhu. You are the person who is engaged to Xu Jinpeng that was in the bride price letter and geng tie, but you are now also the second prince’s concubine. The woman who is promised to two families.”

Hearing the magistrate’s verdict, the public got even livelier, and the eyes of those onlookers were all shining with different lights. If this story was compiled into a playbook, it would definitely become popular in the capital!

Qin Xin's father, Qin Zhun, really got on the wrong boat when he decided to support the second prince. He's used as nothing more than a piggy bank by him and is discarded by the second prince when he has no more money to contribute. But this means that our FL was able to snatch up several profitable properties and businesses from her uncle at a really good price! I love how good she is at taking advantage of this situation XP

Qin Jiu felt that doing business with her second uncle was really enjoyable, it made her feel that even the hot and stuffy weather was not so annoying anymore. And couldn’t help but wish her second uncle to get dizzy from the sun and come back to her to ask for more money for his properties.

Qin Xin is such a snake at heart. I can't believe she poisoned the Qin grandfather to death years ago and influenced her adopted mother, the FL's second aunt, to poison the grandmother as well. And then she acts all pitiful when the grandmother turns her back on her. I wonder why...

It was satisfying to watch the relationship between Qin Xin and the second prince slowly break down. As the OG male and female leads of the story, they initially had a strong loving relationship, but Qin Xin lost his love when she threatened him to reveal the truth of his incompetency in order to escape getting married to the fool. After that, he loses all feelings for her and she becomes nothing more than a piggy bank to him. The last straw was when she cheated on him and got pregnant, and because of Gu Jing's precarious situation, he was forced to wear this green hat and couldn't do anything to retaliate against her. When the truth is revealed, that makes him the laughing stock of the whole capital.

Due to Gu Zezhi's scheming, Wang Yu's children failed in their plan to rescue their grandmother from her hostage situation in the capital and instead killed their grandmother. Like I said, the ML knows everything!

Gu Jing tries to fabricate evidence against the Empress's family with his grandfather under Wang Yu's instigation, and they both get caught red handed by the emperor, who was tipped off by the ML once again. This is when the truth of the second prince being cheated on is revealed, which is really the cherry on the cake for everyone who was supporting Gu Jing.

Qin Xin was undoubtedly pregnant. Her pregnancy had been confirmed by an imperial physician at Shouning Palace during the winter solstice of the previous year, and there was no way she could fake it.

That left only one truth; that was to say, Gu Jing, for the sake of the throne, was willing to wear a green hat for himself, fathering a child through another man.

A man willing to endure such humiliation of wearing a green hat to achieve his goal had abandoned the most fundamental principles of being a man!

And to think he, Liu Renxun once regarded such a person as the future ruler of Qi!

Qin Jiu deals with her sister-in-law so brilliantly. The SIL "accidentally" drops a sachet and asks the FL to pick it up for her in a public setting in front of their peers. Not only does the FL not pick it up, but she steps on it and breaks the gems on this priceless sachet before turning the heat right back on the SIL and "accidentally" dropping an orange and asking the SIL to pick it up. I love her feistiness! She doesn't stick to the rules, that's for sure XP

The ML does such a good job of playing against his brother's worst fear and making him believe that their father wants the ML to stay in the north and is secretly supporting the ML to be the next heir. Eventually the brother snaps and colludes with the enemy forces to kill the father. Faced with this unconcealable truth, the father finally accepts the fact that he raised a white eyed wolf and orders his heir's execution. Finally the ML gets back at his family for all those years of extremely biased behavior he's had to face. His father is the most clueless and oblivious person ever, and even if he regrets it later it's too late.

But he had feared Gu Zezhi’s growing reputation in the army, worried that his influence would surpass Gu Chenzhi’s. He had also feared that Gu Zezhi would covet the title of heir. So, he had crushed Gu Zezhi’s future with his own hands—all to pave the way for Gu Chenzhi, that ungrateful wretch.

He had been blind, both in sight and in heart, foolishly pouring all his efforts into Gu Chenzhi while neglecting Gu Zezhi. As a father, he had utterly failed his third son.

Regret gnawed at him, an overwhelming weight in his chest. He had made far too many mistakes… Was there still time to make amends?

Gu Zezhi managed to secure 10,000 bows for the imperial army without spending a cent. All because he "leaked" the blueprint to the emperor's rebellious half brother Wang Yu and had him make the bows before stealing them all from under his nose. What a brilliant ploy!

4/1/25 this is actually a DNF but 😒 I read so much of it ... ugh I almost don't want to add the tags.
I guess I should though cuz it isn't fair to rate - maybe it SUDDENLY, MAGICALLY, INEXPLICABLY got better. Maybe the writing suddenly was coherent and made sense. Maybe the translation got good. Maybe it wasn't all dog blood and stupidity so ML and FL could "win."
... I won't know though. (And I wouldn't be willing to hold my breath for it.)
~*~*~*~
The Cannon Fodder and Villain’s Happy Ending

[it seems each c of the original was split into nearly 5 parts in translation]
1 FL is Qin GUI? 🤷🏻‍♀️ dunno if it’s the translation or just the WTF of the book but be quick summary was imo pretty unintelligible

4 hm ok so Qin Xin, the servant’s daughter is FL of the original book? … RUN AWAY, actual FL QG!

16 lol convenient her biological aunt is the empress & they all look like they’re related. And that FL saved this di sixth prince

17 just who is this Xiao Ze?!

19 ugh oh no the evil Qin Xin was rebirthed too

24 *deep sigh* (granted yes I was snort laughing first) … oh MTL mess, when spies are incorrectly left as nails. 🫠☠️

34 🫥 seems everyone in FL’s bio family is trash but her brother. Her gma is muddled … too muddled/why doesn’t the brother say the fake knew

36 kinda skimming - 2nd branch stole the title and is shit. Also … these fuckheads are missing the point the EMPRESS already knows. Altho brother might be hiding it to split the family. I do after he’s being too harsh to convince gma but she can just continue to be muddled. If she deserves saving I hope FL does but fuck this fake identity stealing QX

37 imo this is also all so stupid - THE EMPEROR ALREADY KNOWS. Will he really let some evil maid’s child be his son’s consort? Although they do deserve each other. They need to die though cuz obviously they’ll still cause problems in exile

40 I feel like I’m going insane. This bitch madam Qin knows QX has lived a decade in major luxury - how TF has she suffered and been wronged

46 I know this is the author just splashing dog blood but it’s so stupid/are all the little rich bitches stupid? (And not that noble?) Cuz anyone with eyes should be able to tell FL looks like the empress WHO IS HER AUNT

50 er so def ML is Gu ZeZhi the … cousin (?!?) of the current emperor? The third son of Duan wang anyway

57 & 58 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️ translator changes FL’s name randomly

62 lol glad I’m skimming - the clown comments are entertaining & makes the shit translation more bearable

63 imo stupid for FL to run off with her unreliable brother - obviously home is a v problem - shoulda tried to bring ML along

64 welp gma is shit too. They can all run to hell

66 lol fuck all the Qin except for big brother. Glad FL went back to the palace. NEVER RETURN

71 😡 trash bitch ED is murdering the emperor. Why doesn’t SHE die from the Taoist pills

75 word age and rank salad - who TF is the Duan heir? Still not established no?

76 nvm so now ML’s oldest brother is the heir? 🤦🏻‍♀️

87 QX is a monster knowing YunGuang is a scammer and had her clients raped and she just thinks that’s fine

90 😅☠️ tbh the comments trying to logic this are even more entertaining than the story

92 honestly the comments have me howling 😹☠️

100 and finally her younger biological brother shows up. (Will he turn good? 🤷🏻‍♀️)

117 lol ok ML letting her/helping her beat up her harasser is 💯❤️

123 this shit Qin family embezzling FL’s mom’s dowry. TBH the siblings should take their mom’s name after the family splits. (Sorry dad)

125 finally the younger brother is showing progress

131 this is such a stupid plot re: QX & P2; just point out the family deceived the emperor (and the Qin family/though the 2nd branch then colluded). Done. Or tell P2 he can marry QX but he’ll become a commoner. How much will he love her then

132 lolol QX will now be a concubine & P2 was all “ok” 😹☠️ these awful people deserve each other

140 🙄😒 no but how is she going to sell frozen products.
But anyway lol to FL getting nearly 20k from the shit second branch ahaha

lol comment on 141 “Yes let our ship sail ⛵ ٩(◕‿◕。)۶”

146 lol accepting a handkerchief means you accept their affections 🫠

151 lol FL whipping at (county?) princess YingLuo - but only cuz that bitch tried to shoot her with an arrow

156 tbh just scrolled to the end of the c as soon as P2 opened his trash mouth

161 too bad YeLu An wasn’t injured…

162 comment - lol “Selective density: the greatest indicator of a FL.”

168 this cursed hunt. (lol comment “cocaine bear”)

169 🙄😒 look I’m sure bears are very hard to kill especially a drugged one but it’s already been shot 9x by 2 super experts and slashed/stabbed. Cnovels need to get their shit together with these deranged animals.
🙄😹☠️ ok the fucking bear is swatting away arrows? Author I hate you… (You already were next level ridiculous)
🔪🙄🙄🙄 fucking broken tree trunks? Oooookay 🙄🙄🙄
😒😡 so at the end some traitor shoots ML

171… 🙄x1m the bear is still alive? After the soldiers shot hundreds of arrows? Is this a bear or a goddamn MRAP.

172 so an imperial guard was bribed into attacking FL too - of course she’s saved by ML … who O.o drove a dagger through the bear’s paw to pin it to the ground. (lol to YLL being mauled) but uh, does the author remember ML got shot in the abdomen?

173 oh lol the arrow hit his jade pendant
🙄 these villains only know how to blame others for their own incompetence

175 awww to the poor commenter still trying to point out the errors in this trash “translation” 🙃

178 comment 😹☠️💯 “The thigh is golden but the belly is black!😂🤣😂🤣”

180 … they … toss the animals whole into that fire? Omg the stench. Come on now author.

182 … I might need to DNF this. It’s literally painfully stupid. YingLuo threatening Princess ChangNing with YLL but look stupid bitch, what makes you think you won’t be chosen as a county princess. FL doesn’t even have a title. Duh.

187 srsly where TF does YL get her confidence from? She thinks she’s higher than the emperor & empress like WTAF

194 O.o CN disfigures herself? Or injures herself anyway. These brainless people deserve each other.

198 I really like the emperor & empress & how they get along. Too bad he has a harem though

201 this happened before too but 🙄🙄🙄 bitch marginally just knows how to expertly use a whip? (Also bloop date ruined)

202 painfully stupid. Your brother is lost, maybe attacked by a tiger, and you want to leisurely ride to check it out? Judging ML too. Totally disagree with the comment liking him indulging her. Like if the point is for her brother to die, sure. But if the point is to save him, then no.

207 *sigh* “translation” sometimes says the exact opposite of what is happening

209 I think we have some c repeats but I can’t even care

212 at this point I’m reading for the entertainment values of “so bad it’s … good?” In both the story & translation. Wonder what that wangfei would think too know she was labeled a concubine. (And the commenters there weren’t smart enough to figure it out 🤦🏻‍♀️)

Note in 220 1-218 were from an aggregator… <.< so what’s the excuse from then on?

Skimmed ~221-223 the shit Qin family trying to force that scholar Cheng on FL

😹😹😹☠️☠️☠️💯💯💯 225 Zhou Xin the emperor’s eunuch pairing Qin Sheng with that scholar Cheng. Serves them all right ahaha

229 ❤️ seems ML is happy about this decreed marriage

321 now that they’re engaged her calling him big brother is so creepy for me

323 me: the Qin family is the worst!
… *ML’s dad enters the chat*
Duan wang ye & his precious heir better have what they deserve coming to them

329 wow FL’s gma finally grew a brain?!?

241 Honestly I don’t know if I can power through “forehead belt” instead of “head band”
… ok I have NO IDEA re the c # changes but 🤷🏻‍♀️

245 (first, glad it seems ML’s mom is ok / at least not poisoned or anything)
2nd - wow. Why (hint: sarcasm) doesn’t QX complain about the gifts she got from the Wei family the past decade? That’s not hers! Why should she have to suffer it?
Seriously the jury blatant annoying hypocrisy. She’s so much “what’s yours is mine and what’s mine is mine and I want everything that’s yours in the future too”

Read skimmed 245 - a fraction of me felt bad for QX when Yu momo ignored her, but then again she stole FL’s identity for a decade. So it’s not that they look down on her, it’s that she’s a culprit. Had she not done it knowingly likely the Wei family & QXN would’ve kept at least surface relationships
(Although I don’t think the empress knows QX was a knowing fake? Which this is all just shitty writing but like … pretty obvious one can’t expect more from this author.)

246 yeah the martial arts master hired for the younger brother is surnamed Yue but in 245 they kept referring to him as “Master Wu” (which I’m sure is because the wu in 武功) and look, I don’t like myself but I don’t like myself to the level of punishing myself by continuing on

I haven't read a good Chinese historical novel in a while. It isn't the best I've read but I have to say that it was very addictive. I even pulled an all-nighter for it.

Honestly, it was in my tbr for years. This novel popped out in novelupdates various times. But when I read the synopsis and the comments, I was a bit hesitant on starting this novel. It gives off the vibe of a no-brainer novel with op characters and far-fetched plot. But I finally gave it a try and I don’t regret it. At. All.

It's true that there are some glaring plot holes and a bit skeptical plotline sometimes but this novel is also interesting. Once you pick it up, you can't put it down. Because? DRAMA! The dramatics in this novel are sometimes hilarious and literally addictive!

The characters are grey too. And I noticed something that the villains in this book weren't totally black, they did something for others but ultimately they became villans because at the end they only thought of themselves. It was an interesting observation, I guess.

Though I'd have to say that the romance part of this novel is kinda lacking. We don't SEE the male lead fall in love with the female lead. At first a few times, he thought the FL as something interesting and then all of a sudden he became a wife-slave. We also don't see the FL literally fall in love with the ML other than some scenes where she was physically attracted to him. And that's it. But if you omit this section and concentrate on their after-marriage part, it's still pretty good.

And the synopsis pretty much sums it up. I DID have to mtl a bit but it was one of the best readable mtl I've read. So it wasn't really a problem.

All in all, this is a great novel for binge reading!😊😊😊

One day while being beaten, Qin Jui recalls memories from her past life and realizes she has transmigrated into a switched at birth novel. She is now in the role of the real first daughter of a marquis' household being raised in the countryside by devious former servants. Her biological parents are dead and her replacement is a favored child in the capital. One day the exchange will be noticed but it leads to jealous, political maneuvering, and continued tragedy. Qin Jui openly rejects the intended plot line and simply tries to run away to foreign lands, encountering an injured boy on her flight. Too late she realizes that he is the future Regent Gu Zezhi and novel villain. Further, it seems deviation from key factors in the plot cause her to suffer chronic nightmares of her death scene. Jui decides to see if she can break the cannon fodder curse on her and her family since she can't run away. She tries to avoid the female lead (her replacement) Qin Xin and the male lead, Prince Gu Jing--but her plans go awry.

As if you couldn't tell from the description, this is one of those historical Chinese fiction revenge/romance epics. It has a mix of political maneuvering, soap opera style family drama, and toxic relationships. With that in mind there are a few general problems: the plot is exaggerated [while sometimes that is fun it can feel ridiculously incredulous or baffling as well], the events can be repetitive [I got into a fight with this young miss, and now this young miss from a different house, oh, and now their cousin...], and the character list is quite taxing [there are a lot of players but more so keeping one person straight can be hard as they have a current self, a past life name, a married name, a newly earned title by the emperor, etc. and have different names based on who is talking to them]. On the plus side, I can say that I was really happy when the author added a twist where the OG FL (Xin) is a regressor. It was an interesting complication and moral foil which I wish was explored a bit more. Further, in general the main characters are likable. They don't seek out people for small slights, past life crimes, or just to be annoying. Rather they fight back against traps and try to move on with their own lives. Also Jiu is not incredibly OP. She doesn't have super engineering skills to recreate all modern technology, she barely remembers the plot and it has been changed anyway, and she has no internal system giving her cheat objects or quests. The bad guys get less development but overall a little less cringy than some in the genre. The treatment of women, the age gap of our couple, and the general length can be a bit daunting, so this won't be for everyone. A few times, I felt like the meandering was just time filler but if you like this kind of tale this is a fair representation.

BEWARE of SPOILER

Someone needed to draw a family tree for this story because almost everyone is related either by blood or marriage. For example, the ML was the Emperor's cousin. While the MC was the Empress's niece.

The plot was abundant in most Asian story about swapped babies either by accident or by will. In this novel, Qin Jiu and Qin Xin was swapped by Qin Xin's mother.

The original Qin Jiu past away after years of abused by her foster parents. Our MC, with the same name with the original, coincidentally transmigrated into the original's body at that time. For Qin Jiu, the world was from a book she read. In the book, it was stated that the original Qin Jiu found out about her origin and managed to go back to her biological family. However, growing up in the countryside, she was a far cry from Qin Xin. And of course, a tragic end awaits for her. Qin Xin however, live on to be the Empress (if I'm not wrong). And so, Qin Jiu planned to avoid the plot altogether.

The other twist was that Qin Xin was reborn in this timeline. Different from the plot of the book, in her previous life, the Qin family found out early on that she and Qin Jiu was swapped. Qin Xin and her biological family was then exiled as slave. The original Qin Jiu live on to be the Empress (if I'm not wrong).

In the novel that Qin Jiu read and in the memory of Qin Xin's previous life, the original ML was Gu Jing, the Emperor's second son.

Like mentioned, the story was no different from any other swapped babies plot. One of the two will prevail while the other will meet a tragic end. It's a recycled plot that was never boring in my opinion.

This novel was on of the few (that I read) that mentioned the peerless beauty of the ML. Others are as below:
- The Rebirth Of The Malicious Empress Of Military Lineage
- My Wife Spoils Me Too Much
- I’ll Be The Male Lead’s Sister In-Law
- After Transmigrating into a Short-lived White Moonlight, had a HE with the Villain
- Why The Big Villain Hasn’t Run Away
- The Rebirth of an Ill Fated Consort

Instead of the author telling us the beauty of the ML, it was the FL who did so. The novel was still in translation. Another 39 chapters to go. And because each chapter was divided into parts, it will probably take a while.
