From USA Today Bestselling Author Madeline Martin comes the first book in a playful Regency series where the girls of Lady Finch's Finishing School grow into ladies who have no intention to ever marry...
A wallflower no one wants...
Lady Hannah is a friend to everyone and would be the perfect bride, if only she wasn't such a hoyden. Perhaps that is why no man has made an offer of marriage...
Not that it matters. The life of a country spinster will do quite nicely.
That is, until she's approached by the Earl of Brightstone to assist him in becoming more appealing in his search for a wife. She readily agrees. After all, they would never suit.
Not when he follows the rules, and she breaks them. Not when he overthinks everything, and she's so very impulsive. Not when he's looking to marry, and she knows she'll never receive a proposal.
But hearts have a way of defying even the most pedantic minds, and opposites often create the brightest sparks...

Hannah Bexley is well-known as a nice girl, everyone’s friend, always eager to help out any way she can, but her reputation as a vivacious hoyden makes her less than ideal for marriage. Which is no matter to her, since she plans to uphold the girlhood pact she made with her friends to never marry.
A country manor with her friends seems like the perfect future to Hannah until Lucien Lambert, the Earl of Brightstone, asks for her help in making himself more attractive to women so he’ll have a better chance of finding a wife. Hannah sees no reason not to help him. It’s not as if she wants him for herself since they’re much too different. Lucien is a rule follower while Hannah follows most every impulse. He’s seeking a wife and she’s certain she’ll never marry. But her heart has other ideas.
Poor Hannah definitely had some growing up to do and her impulsivity drove me crazy at times, but I think part of that was because I can identify with her so well from how I could be in my younger years. Thankfully, she did also demonstrate a good bit of growth in her character as she learned not to believe everything she heard and to give Lucien a chance to explain himself. Lucien was an adorably awkward hero who started off pretty clueless but quickly learned to stand up for himself and what he wanted for his life, so I loved that. Hannah definitely got in her own way quite a bit, which annoyed me, but it’s also something that resonates with me on a pretty fundamental level. That also made it more worthwhile when she finally did listen to Lucien, and he was at last able to express himself effectively. This was a light, warm story and a lovely set up for a new series.
Barbara’s rating: 5 of 5 Stars Series: Wedding a Wallflower #1 Publication Date: 1/18/22 Period: Regency 1816, York and London, England Number of Pages: 229
While there are myriad book series featuring wallflowers who make a pact with sister wallflowers vowing never to wed, you won’t see the stories delivered any better than this. This author delivers a well-integrated set-up for the series along with a sigh-worthy romance. The writing is outstanding, the characters are quirky, witty, and wonderful, and the romance – well … you just really need to read it.
Miss Hannah Bexley, the only child of Baron Westwich, is beautiful, vivacious, kind, thoughtful, intelligent and any other positive adjectives you’d like to apply to her. The thing is, she doesn’t see herself that way. She sees herself as a hoyden because that is what the ton tells her she is – they say her red hair is garish, her laugh is too loud and free, her exuberance is unladylike, she talks too much, etc. She’s come to honestly believe all of those things about herself because in the three years she’s been ‘out’, she hasn’t had even one suitor. She’s had hope a couple of times, but the men never followed through – and they broke her heart. Now, she is determined never to marry, and will happily move forward toward the pact she made with her friends from Lady Finch’s Finishing School. Hannah and her four very dearest friends, Lady Elizabeth, Amy Honeyfield, Lucy Beauchamp, and Lady Jillian, all signed a pact never to marry. They would live their lives as they wished and wouldn’t be anyone’s property. They’d live on their own country estate that would have a fully stocked kitchen for Amy to bake, an art room for Lady Jillian, a music room for Lucy, a huge library for Lady Elizabeth, and carriages Hannah can drive for herself.
Lucien Lambert, the Earl of Brightstone, is definitely NOT the brightest, shiniest star in the ton. He is bookish, studious, quiet, unfashionable, never knows what to say – and when he does say something, it is the wrong thing. His overbearing mother is constantly at him to marry, but he has no desire to do so. Women find him undesirable. He knows he’ll have to marry – and when he sees this beautiful young woman climbing his gate, breaking the gate, and ending up in the mud with her skirts above her knees – well, he is definitely intrigued. He decides to ask her to help him ‘improve’ himself so he can find a bride. She is the daughter of Baron Westwich, his neighbor, and definitely lacks decorum, but she intrigues him. She doesn’t want to marry though. Mmmmmm – I wonder how that is going to work out.
Misunderstandings and miscommunications abound in this wonderfully written opposites-attract novel. But, of course, love conquers all and we have a sigh-worthy HEA along with a beautifully written epilogue. You absolutely cannot go wrong by reading this novel.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Lucien and Hannah’s story has a few twists and turns that I didn’t expect. The characters are well developed and Martin does a fantastic job of peeling back their layers. I had a difficult time putting this book down. There are a few very steamy scenes. “…neither of them were looking at the stars anymore. They were both fixed on one another as if there were no sky overhead or ground at their feet. As if the ball behind them did not exist, and neither did any excuse not to touch her. Kiss her.” Bravo! I hope there are more books planned for these characters and for Hannah’s friends.
While attending finishing school, Miss Hannah Bexley, the only child of Baron Westwich, made a pact with her dearest friends to never marry. Hannah along with her friends Lady Jillian, Lady Elizabeth, Lucy, and Amy all vowed to live life on their own terms and would retire to the country together as spinsters. For Hannah, this pact was a godsend, as she was sure she would never make a match and the vow was surely the best way to save her from future heartache. But even with an ironclad plan in place, when Hannah went to London for the season, she still found herself longing for love and found only disappointment. Now after several seasons, Hannah has given up on finding anyone who will love her and has decided to embrace her future as a spinster, much to her parent's dismay. Hannah may have given up on love, but love clearly hasn’t given up on her, because while at the family’s country estate and in the middle of yet another lecture on finding a spouse, Hannah spies a kitten in trouble and takes off to save it.
Lucien Lambert, the Earl of Brightstone is reading under a tree when he is accosted by a kitten and then turns to see Hannah as she climbs a fence and watches in horror as the slat breaks and she very indelicately tumbles to the ground. He helps her and they chat, he finds her delightful but is disappointed that she has decided to never marry. He promises to get the fence fixed without a word to her parents and they part ways. Later his mother nags him to find a wife and suggests that he use Hannah for practice, he refuses, but when his mother suggests he at least consider asking her for help with his appearance, he agrees, mainly to have a reason to see her again. He asks for her opinion and implements her recommendations. The change is astounding and he becomes one of the most sought-after bachelors of the season. But he continues to seek out Hannah, hoping he can change her mind about marriage.
Hannah is falling for Lucien, but miscommunication, misunderstandings, and a manipulative debutante will keep our lovers apart. Hannah is heartbroken once again and is ready to give up on love for good, but with a little help from her friends, could a HEA be in her future, or is she destined to be a spinster?
This was a well-written, nicely paced, fun story that opens a new series that introduces us to five smart and spirited women and the men that love them just as they are. This first book features Hannah, a heroine who is lovely, kind, and perpetually stuck in the “friend zone” until she meets Lucien, a bookish hero who would rather be studying than dancing, that is until a red-headed hoyden falls into his life. This book has wonderful characters, a slow-burn romance, great secondary characters, a little miscommunication, some misunderstandings, warm love scenes, and HEA complete with an epilogue. Overall, this was a delightful read; fun without being fluffy, and with a depth of emotion and vulnerability that keeps the story grounded. All these things combine to make a very enjoyable read that I am happy to recommend and I am looking forward to seeing what kind of adventures are in store for the other four ladies!
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that I requested and was provided to me by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.*
It had been six years since she and her friends at school had made the Wallflower Pact. Never to marry and live as they pleased. But sometimes, a pact might have to be broken!
She knew she was too outspoken, impulsive and not so attractive with her red hair. But then again, she was not going to attract a husband.
When a kitten literally landed in his lap, he could not believe his neighbor was laying on the broken fence she had tried to get over! He had not seen her in years and was surprised at her relaxed behavior, which was refreshing.
As these two get together, there is no telling what will happen! Madeline has written another wonderful beginning to a new series that I cannot wait to see what happens with all of the girls!
A enjoyable and very attention holding read, one that I found very much up my street. I had a little difficulty liking Hannah at first, no reason and I can’t explain it, just me I suppose, the rest I loved and she did grow on me steadily I want to stress. The whole plot was good and it was well written as you would expect from Madeline, she’s so good.
Thankyou to Madeline for allowing me to Arc read this book. I received an Arc copy and chose to post this review.
Hannah Bexley and her four friends make The Vow of the Wallflowers. A vow to never marry, live in a manor and pursue their interests. Six years later during their third season, the idea of a husband and children could change their minds. Hannah and her neighbor, Lucien Lambert, Earl of Brightstone, meet under unusual circumstances. Lucien is socially lacking and asks Hannah for her help. As they get to know each other, Lucien realizes Hannah is the lady he loves. Unfortunately, the more he tries to declare himself, the more he messes up and hurts her. Poor Lucien! It takes four ladies to help him get it right. I found myself on edge and in tears. A great read for the first book in the series! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book gifted by the author.
Miss Hannah Bexley is friendly to everyone but is considered a hoyden, not bride material…until she’s approached by the Earl of Brightstone to assist him in becoming more appealing in his search for a wife.
This is the first book in the Wedding a Wallflower series, featuring friends who made a childhood pact not to marry. All the friends are introduced and provided support for Hannah throughout the story.
I read book one and two in reverse order and enjoyed both. The miscommunication went on a little too long for me, personally, but the story was cute and the characters likable.
Madeline Martin once again gives us a story to warm our hearts. Hannah and Lucien are such a sweet couple; I fell in love with each of them as soon as they were introduced. Unfortunately their relationship was filled with misunderstandings and even deception along the way before they got their HEA. However the story was well woven and was highly entertaining. Definitely well worth reading. Thank you Ms. Martin for the opportunity to read another one of your amazing stories.
First, let me state that I was given an ARC of this book for a fair and honest review.
Second, let me be the first to tell you, Dear Reader, that I always say something to the effect of, "Madeline Martin's done it again." and she has, but I sincerely love this book and its heroine and hero. This book centers around a strong heroine who is comfortable in her own skin and is deeply loved by her group of girlfriends. However, she is a hoyden or a heathen if you will. She laughs too loud, says what she thinks, and talks too much according to the ton. Pshh the ton, bunch of bullies. Anyway, I digress, Hannah, the heroine, is a lovely creature, much like myself. She is always the friend and always kind, but never the love interest. I felt her. I felt seen. Her parents want her married off and to be madly in love like them and produce a gaggle of grandchildren. She is not feeling it. She made a pact with aforementioned girlfriends to never get married and live with them happily.
Then, you have Lucien. Aww, Lucien, a man after my own heart. He is a reader and just wants to be left alone. Unfortunately, his mother is a bit of a bully. (She's a member of the ton...) She wants him to get married, but not to any heathen (i.e., specifically Hannah). Lucien is not very stylish, but what he lacks in style he has hidden underneath his baggy clothes and in his wonderful personality. Dear Reader, you will get to watch the love story unfold. Of course, there will be trauma and hurt, but there is spicy and love. Thankfully, you will get to read all about it in this book, which I HIGHLY recommend you purchasing! I read it in about two hours because I could not put it down. I actually threatened my child with losing her phone if she did NOT go to bed and let her mother read. (Jeeze...a mama needs some adult time.) I digress, I have a list of books that I LOVE most of all. This is on that list! Also, Madeline always teaches the reader a little history, and this time it was about Pride and Prejudice.
Most times the first book in the series has a lot of repeat backstory. While this is necessary sometimes it is too much, however, Madeline has ingrained the backstory through the book in such a way as to be enjoyable and entwined with the plot and characters. I thought it was ingeniously done. You get to know the characters for who they are not what brought them there.
You have five friends that having gone to the same finishing school are loyal, kind, supportive, and truly caring. As young women the make a pact to never marry. They tell each other their happy feeling and commiserate over the sad thing. Such true friends are hard to find and the not brought to life in this story was so touching and heartfelt.
The first to be center stage is the kind, vivacious, gorgeous and loving Miss Hannah Bexley. To her, she is plain, loud, talkative, and over boisterous. Her hair is too red, her laugh to loud, and always a friend to help but not love. That's what she thinks others see her as. Not, however, her true friends see her as. So she believes they will end up as spinster with the country manor.
After three seasons she is adamant she will be a spinster, until one faithfully indecent with a barn cat changed what will happen. A chance meeting with her neighbor Lord Lucien Lambert, fifth Earl of Brightstone.
Lucien is somber in nature more apt to be found with a book or exploring the stars. As his mother wants him to secure the titles lineage with a privileged blue-blood, so she can have grandchildren to enjoy. Lucien does not see this as good since as a mother she is cold and judgmental.
Lucien does do one thing asked if him. He seems Hannah's assistance to be more appealing towards women. He bungles conversations, prefers looser clothing, and gets tongue tied when not sure what to say.
So join in with friends, family, and have a season of fun with "the ton" going to soirees, balls, and Vexhall Gardens. Live vicariously through these vivacious ladies as they storm through life and along the way make more friends, but not as close, and possibly find love along the way.
Find out what happened to the cat, fence, and if a little polish helped Lucien or not. Who Hannah helps next and her take on life. Does she find her HEA or the country manor call to her? Will someone finally prove to her she is lovely and loveable?
The Earl's Hoyden Wedding a Wallflower #1 Madeline Martin ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Lady Hannah is a friend to so many people and she would make the perfect bride. Some may even consider her a hoyden. Maybe that's why no man has made an offer of marriage. It doesn't matter though because she is quite content to spend the rest of her life alone in the country. With her friends if at all possible.
That is, until she's approached by the Earl of Brightstone. He would like her to assist him in becoming more appealing. In the hopes that he will find a wife. This, she readily agrees to. After all, they would never suit.
Not when he follows the rules, and she happily breaks them. Not when he overthinks everything, and she's so impulsive. Not when he's looking marry, and she knows that she'll never receive a proposal.
You know what they say opposites attract, and hearts are so very fickle.
Wow this is Madeline Martin at her best. Give her pen and paper and this author will come out with a fabulous book. This was such a fun read. I must say I was giggling quite a bit while reading this book and after the week I've had it was perfect. Lighthearted and witty, the characters seemed so perfect together. This was such a lovely group of wallflowers. From the moment I opened this book I knew it was going to be good and I wasn't disappointed. This is not your regular wallflowers run of the mill book. It was full of laughter and love. From start to finish I enjoyed this book tremendously. Ms. Martin I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read about the other girls.
Hannah and her five friends make a pact to stay Wallflowers and never wed, only to retire to the country in a large manor and live together. Trouble is they make the pact when they are 15 and in just six years things are very different for them. Now Hannah is on her thirs season without a suitor and hoping that the pact will become a reality. That is until she meets her neighbour the Earl of Brightstone. Lucien knows that he must wed to produce the heir that his mother and society at large desires. However he finds most of the women of the ton boring and has no wish to tie himself up with one of them. Then his neighbour tumbles over his fence in search of a hurt kitten, and he's rethinking his stand on women being boring, because Hannah is nothing but intriguing. Sadly she never intends to wed. I enjoyed how they circle each other and keep staying away because they feel it's what the other person wants. It was sweet how she wrote that list of eligible women and gave him and how he noticed that she hadn't added her own name. Of course the friends came to give them the push that they truly needed. Lovely tale.
This story was painfully funny at times, awkward at others and totally charming overall. Hannah is one of a group of friends whose characteristics cause them to be wallflowers. Hannah is known for laughing too loud and being a bit impulsive. However, the one thing that she hates being known for, yet can't help but being is kind. And it is her kindness that leads her to help Lucien survive the season. His mother wants him to marry and he knows he is unlikely to find a woman being as awkward as he is. So despite that his mother does not like Hannah, she does admit that Hannah has fashion sense. Hannah is a bit too successful in her makeover of Lucien and he becomes the bachelor of season. He doesn't know what to do with all the attention as at heart, he is still awkward. Hannah and Lucien are perfect for each other, yet there are missteps, miscommunications, and his mother to deal with. The characters have you rooting for them through all the bumbling moments. They are endearing and I enjoyed reading their story.
Lady Hannah & four friends pledged not to marry & all signed the journal whilst at finishing school & now six years & three seasons later they are all still unmarried. Hannah is a hoyden, perhaps that is why no man has made an offer of marriage but she is kind. Not that it matters. The life of a country spinster will do quite nicely. That is until she encounter her neighbour, Earl of Brightstone & he asks her to assist him in becoming more appealing in his search for a wife. She readily agrees. A very well written romance with plenty of misunderstandings, which make Lucien & Hannah’s journey to a HEA very rocky. The characters are wonderful & have great depth, the pace flows effortlessly & the chemistry is sizzling. I loved both Lucien & Hannah & thoroughly enjoyed this brilliant romance My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I found this to be an entertaining story. I loved the friends and look forward to each of their stories. This was Hannah's story. She was so fixated on what other's thought of as faults that she almost lost her true love. Lucien was captivated from the beginning, but his ineptness at dealing with his feelings and people kept getting in the way. I enjoyed their interactions with each other and fell in love along with Hannah and Lucien. I loved the support she received from her family and her friends, even though some of that went a bit sideways. I recommend this book who those who enjoy the more flawed characters instead of just beautiful people.
I received an ARC of this story, and this is my unsolicited review.
Hannah and Lucien are made for each other, it just takes a while for them to realize it. Hannah laughs too loud, talks too much and is very kind. Too kind, so that she fancies herself falling for someone and they just see her as a friend. Lucien is her neighbor known as a bore and unfashionable, who she has not had much interaction with but he asks her to help him find a wife she agrees. Little did she know she would lose her heart and that there would be obstacles in their way. It will take some great friends to make them see how much they should be together.
I loved the fun and romantic humor that Hannah and Lucien find themselves in, on a number of occasions in this story. I enjoyed that the book seems easy to read, as well as a page turner. Hannah and her friends share in a number of entertaining moments while in the pursuit for a husband, however Hannah says that she’s not looking for one. I like that the writer kept the story light and cheery. For me this was a fun read.
Madeline Martin is a new author for me. This was a good read. Interesting storyline. I did finish it in one day which for a new author is a good sign. :) Sex was minimal but well written.
I did notice there is no 2nd book out yet and her others are more Highlander/Scottish which I don't read or doesn't seem like my style so probably won't read anymore.
Wonderful start to the Wedding a Wallflower series. Miss Hannah Bexley knows she will never marry, in fact, she has taken a vow to not marry. Lucien Lambert, Earl of Brightstone, doesn't do well when he goes out in society, prefers his books, but knows he must marry for the Earldom. He knows Hannah as his neighbour, and knows how kind she is, so he asks for her help with the niceties that he needs to learn. Loved these characters, the story, Ms Martin's writing style - well, everything about this book. Looking forward to more of the series.
The Earl's Hoyden (Wedding a Wallflower Book 1) by Madeline Martin New addition to my favorite Regency list!♥️ I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves a heartwarming read with all the right feels and depth that attracts and keeps a readers attention and thoughts well past the end of the story. The storyline is wonderfully written with intelligent, interesting, and engaging characters that I found attractive and I could relate to. I enjoyed the love story of Hannah and Lucian so much it is now one of my favorite Regencies. BTW, Lucian’s gift to Hannah at the end is to die for!!!! I can’t wait for the next book.
Madeline Martin’s “The Earl's Hoyden” is Book 1 in the Wedding a Wallflower Series. One of my favorite authors and a wonderful start to a new series!
Though Miss Hannah Bexley is known as a nice girl and helpful friend she is anything but prim and proper and her reputation as a hoyden precedes her, making her less than desirable for marriage. Having been disappointed in finding a match she’s glad she’s already decided never to marry having made a pact with her friends long ago so she’s resigned to this fact. It’s only when she meets Lucien Lambert, the handsome Earl of Brightstone that Hannah might think differently but then how could they ever be when they are so opposite? And of all things, Lucien enlist her help to make himself more desirable as a marriage match.
What a fun story this is! These two are clearly meant for one another and of course you know what they say, opposites do attract. Oh but miscommunications, misunderstandings and mayhem abound in this delightful story as both Hannah and Lucien find their way to one another and find their true balance.
With wonderful, well developed characters, both main and secondary the author weaves a well paced, fun story filled with heart warming emotion, lively, clever banter and laughable moments. The story introduces us to Hannah’s friends who play a huge part in the story and I look forward to reading their respective stories. Madeline Martin is an author I’m always drawn to because no matter the time period her talent shines and she always delivers a fantastic story!
Thank you Ms. Martin for this charming love story! I look forward to the stories of Hannah’s friends.
A pact to never marry hides a fear of rejection. Miss Hannah Bexley has red hair and freckles, a boisterous laugh and talkative tongue, none of these attributes endear her to the ton, only her friends. However a neighbour is enchanted with her vibrant personality and kindness when she agrees to make him more fashionable. He clings to her friendship when he discovers none of the other debutantes attract him but then makes a muff of it, foiling any likelihood that she will accept him a a suitor. Highly recommended. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Hannah's story is the perfect beginning to this new series. I enjoyed meeting all the characters and look forward to getting to know each and every one of them and learning their stories. I just love watching Hannah and Lucien's relationship blossom as well as the misunderstandings and angst throughout the book. Their story will grab your interest from the first page and won't let go until the end and with a guaranteed HEA you won't be disappointed. I Loved every minute and look forward to the rest of the series. I read an Advanced copy in Exchange of an Honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Aweeee, I really enjoyed this one. A group of girls made a pack while in ladies finishing school (they each signed their name in a journel, so I think its a bit inspired by The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants), but of course things change when they get older. I just loved Lucien's and Hannah's interactions especially when they first met, a bit of meet cute. I can't wait for the 4 other girls' stories.
I enjoyed reading about Lucien and Hannah, how they met and how they fell in love. This story showed that not all people see you the same way some see what's below the surface. She was a hoyden and she was not too afraid to show him that side of her, it's what he loved about her. I highly recommend this book. 👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤❤
I can’t say how much I enjoyed reading this book. The characters are amazing and the storyline draws you in and keeps you reading. If you enjoy historical fiction you’ll enjoy this book. I’m waiting on pins and needles for the next book
She laughed too loud , she talked too loud and she had red hair! she was absolutely no one's idea of a perfect lady. Except Lucien, the Earl. He lived all of that about her and more! But the obstacles these two faced were insurmountable - or so BB they thought. Once again MS Martin has written a story that just makes you happy. Loved it
Well written traditional Regency romance. Several misunderstanding re the relationship, which is in the main, slow burn. There are a couple of steamy scenes near the end. it was a fun read. 3.5 stars.
