The scope of this book is large and complex. Seeger encompasses the different histories and traditions of five of the most popular and long living religions of the East, which include: Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Shintoism. This book holds an abundant amount of information, which is critical for deep understanding of the subject. Each religion presented in the book derives from a different country of the East. “Hinduism and Buddhism come from India; Confucianism and Taoism from China; …Shinto in Japan” (1). The book covers information about the formation of each religion, how it has progressed to today, and important figures of the respective religions, such as Mahatma Gandhi for Hinduism, Confucius for Confucianism, Lao-tse in Taoism, the great Buddha in Buddhism, and the importance of the Emperor in the early years of Shinto. The information presented is also sourced in the back of the book for additional readings. There is a great need for this book for research. The contents give beneficial information for the readers in search of information, or just readers who are attempting to learn something new. Though this book is directed for young adults, it is also helpful for an older audience.
