A brutal uprising in the Kingdom of Alluvia has shaken the Allied Lands - and Emily finds herself accused of starting it. Desperate, all too aware the kingdom is on the verge of becoming a vortex of chaos, Emily travels to Alluvia in the hopes of calming both sides long enough to secure peace...
...Unaware that the uprising is merely the first step in a plan to shatter the Allied Lands beyond repair.
A great continuation and big reveal in the series. The middle half of this novel seemed a bit repetitive, but otherwise good. If food, it’d be a good local place.
Picked up my eReader and couldn't put it down (literally fell asleep with it in my hand and first thing I did in the morning was start reading. Amazing work like always
I was well into this book and was feeling disappointed it did not seem up to the standard of the rest of the series. It seemed a bit boring, with little happening at first. That all changed though, and their were a lot of shocks. It is rare for me to not even have clue what is going to happen on a story, but I was totally blindsided on this one. Great book!
Awesome continuation to the story. When he mentions the vast space at the center of Whitehall, couldn't help but go "well duh". Makes sense. Now I can't help but wonder, is Void actually the father of Emily? I mean, other than being her master and adopting her could it be that he is actually her father and that is why he doesn't want her to die. It would explain quite a bit. I mean he is the strongest mage around and he could have traveled to her world. Though that would make it odd that he would have to use her library card to even attempt to magic her. I can't but wonder who her father is or if he will ever show up. Would be kind of nice to find that out someday.
The ending though seemed a long time in the making. I mean I thought that the bad guy could have been Mage Wolf, though wasn't he the mimic? Though the ultimate bad guy makes sense. Though WHY!!! Did that person have to be blown to bits. I mean really! Why them? That isn't cool. That character is like the best person around why did they have to go up and die T.T

The usual excellent read. Looking forward to the future as there is no more difficult foe than one who is not obviously evil and has the best intentions.
As Schooled in Magic nears the end of the series, author Chris Nuttall drops a bombshell on the readers in this tale of rebellion, or is it revolution? This fantasy series has been one of my favorites for a few years now, and this book continues the high quality level. The plot threads Nuttall has thrown out over the years start to be drawn together. Another excellent read!
Wow what a twist I really do not see how I missed it. This is a great book continuing a great series from the excellent Mr Nuttall. As per usual I await the next book with baited breath. Once you have read this do read the authors notes they are very interesting. Well done
As the author writes, they’re in the end game now, and what an end game it is. Another excellent installment to this fantastic series. I’ll be sad to see it end (eventually), but I’m happy to read every book.
End of series? No not yet . I enjoyed the book as I usually expected to do and am looking forward to seeing what happens next Emily and her friends !!!!
Normally I would have went with a 5 Star rating on this but was a little disappointed when one of my favorite characters from the series was eliminated. Of course Emily is my #1, but I would say this character that was eliminated is in my top 5 characters that I have enjoyed in the series. I hope Christopher doesn't experience to big a backlash on the death of this character as I'm sure I'm not the only one to consider the character one of their top lavatories.
I don't want spoil it for anyone so can't say more, and if you are a little bummed out with the loss of this character in what seems like a very final and somewhat gory ending of this character, remember anything can happen in a fantasy series. Although I was hoping this character would have ended up happily retired, if it's the last time we will see this character at least the character had good run.
One thing I've always enjoyed about the Allied Lands is that there is still more to see of it!
Last book we got to see the Laughter magic school. This time the action is happening in the Kingdom of Alluvia, neighboring kingdom to the Whitehall/Dragon's Den area.
Civil war is brewing and the rebels are loudly proclaiming that their rebellion is all Emily's fault. (Even though Emily, of course, has never been to the Kingdom of Alluvia.)
Emily is sure she can mediate and bring the two opposing factions to the negotiating table. But has she bit off more than she can chew this time?
Highly recommended for longtime Emily/Schooled in Magic fans and for regular fantasy series readers. (As is always the case with series, be sure to read ALL of the 21 earlier Emily books PLUS the two Fantastic Schools anthologies (shared world with a Nuttall novella anchoring the collection).
Emily gets caught between a rock and a Boulder. Hard place? No, Not Emily.... it is always worse. Christopher has done it again, he put together a book that is not only relevant in these times and places, but incorporates it into the Nameless World. With Emily trying to mediate between two warring factions, she also has betrayal on her heels at every turn. For every step forward ther is a stone wall before her. Just when things look bad, and there is a possibility they will get better... she get hits with the worse thing yet..... Who can she trust? Will Queen Francoise be able to help her? Lady Barb? Void? Sergeant Miles? Silent? Prince Deter? Prince Hendrick? Her new acquaintance Aidan? The Rebel Councilors? Cat? Queen Allasa? Jade? The White Council? Laughter? Goirdian? Jan? Master Lucknow? As the lightning flashes over head, where will it hit?
I truly enjoy Emily's plight. Christopher is one of the few male writers I tolerate writing about a female character. I hope the things that give me stress just give me greater insight into men. Understanding the repetitive sections of the text are necessary to make the whole a more stand alone book only slightly lessens some of its monotony. Though I originally enjoyed going through Emily's thought process. Love the books and am always eager for the next.
I have very much enjoyed the entire series. I liked the school years the most. In this book, I preferred the first third. The plot was quite good. The overall world building has been terrific, though I would hate to live with so many obnoxious people. The author is a prolific and talented writer. I do wish he would stop using the word "sour" and "sourly" so very much to describe Emily's thoughts and expressions. It appears all too frequently and I picture her making a face whenever I think of her.
I struggled with this one. I’d picked it up and put it down quickly a few times over the past year, but I finally made it through. I really do love this series as a whole. This book seemed like the setup book. Not much happened in the first 80%-90%. So much political discourse that it seemed to be going in circles. There was no right answer in the rebellion/war. Of course, it did build up to the big reveal of the series, as well as death of a very central character, which made the last 10% of the book exciting. I wish it had grabbed me more from the beginning.

This made me so sad! Good read but wow! I’m feeling triggered! Soon as I read the part about Nanette and then Void. I loved his and Emily’s relationship. She had crappy parents on earth and now she’s lost her surrogate parents. But I do like how they still care for each other but have their own set of values. But after the Lady Barb thing there’s no coming back. I also like Emily’s growth as a character. She’s gotten much less annoying over the course of the series

I hated Little Witches, it was my least favorite of the series, Emily just wasn’t the same character in that book compared to all the others. So this felt like the author got back on track with the story instead Of that awful weird storyline that changed the character we grew to love into someone without the backbone/opinions she had in every other book.
And as always, there are still SOOOO MANY BATHS (author is obsessed with baths in every book)
I have yet to be disappointed by a Christopher Nuttall fantasy novel and this sure is no exception. This will of necessity be a short review as most anything I could write would be a spoiler, If you have followed the adventures of Emily thus far you will be saying, wow! how did I miss that - and that is all I am saying. One of my favorite fantasy authors
This is another one of those entries in the series that's more about setting up the next series than actually accomplishing anything. Picking up from the end of the previous book, Emily is captured faces a kangaroo court full of corrupt bureaucrats that want her assets and to reinforce their power. She's narrowly saved and then sent to a country in the middle of a revolution. The vast majority of the book is more of Chris whinging about the plight of women in a medieval culture and opining on the nature of the various political factions and subfactions within the revolution (It's very analogous to the French Revolution).
I spent the majority of this book bored out of my mind with only the last 10% or so being interesting. I will admit that I didn't see the twist coming.
The amount of convoluted crap needed to even attempt making this plot in any way plausible is so staggering as to beggar belief. If you haven't made it this far in the series do yourself a favor and stop reading now.
Excellent example of continued plot development in this long-running series. This book has been unexpectedly good -- it has really exceeded expectations. I look forward to the next arc.
This was one of the best books in the series so far! I was caught completely by surprise. I am not happy with one plot twist but it makes the overall series better. Reality does not always give you what you want!
I didn't see it coming. But the author finally reveals who the mysterious stranger was and his agenda. So enjoy while your pic character struggles with the currents of history vs. someone is stirring the pot condrumn.
I just finished reading this book and I must say that the plot twist at the end is crazy. I never imagined that character going in that direction. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
This book's plot twist is just wow. Keep up with the good work, Christopher!

The series is getting better and better. The stories are never-ending and hopefully it will continue or I be out of books to read as I've already read the series 4 times so far.
After over twenty books, this series is still going strong and still keeps surprising me. The rich world, strong characters and well thought out conflicts keep building on each other.
Now we know why these books continue to be good. The books had an overarching plan when he wrote the first book, even if he’s had some inventiveness along the way. Which is why he could use some small passing details from earlier books.
There’s a lot happening in this book. And a lot of stuff in this series comes to a head in this book. It was awesome! Lol definitely a must read. I can’t wait for the next book!
