The Dead Horsemen just ups the game of the previous two books. ***Be aware of sexual content*** Having said that, the polyamorous relationship between the Horsemen is an investigation into the ability to be truly open to love.

Then, I love that the philosophy of the central character is one of creating a United, culturally diverse and peaceful world against seemingly insurmountable odds. Hope springeth eternal.

And the fun the characters have, I'm not out saving the world and I don't have half of the excitement they experience. This book is a romp in the hay with all of the elements of high fantasy you could possibly want.

The Dead Horseman is the third book in the Horseman Harem saga and as with the previous books the story completely pulled me in with its new look on the Horseman of the Apocalypse mythology, unique magic, crazy politics, spicy romance and so much more. This story was filled with celebration and magic, family and friends, drama and betrayal, it all made for an excellent read.

Kilmari has brought up the subject of gender pronouns when it comes to Magic, and while it may seem like a small aspect of the story it is a very important one. Magic has two forms and is considering who they are as a person and trying to navigate how to be addressed to the outside world while dealing with hiccups within their own family and very much adds a layer to Magic story that I'm unaccustomed to but makes me think. I will be referring to Magic as they/their in this review.

Magic has gone through a lot in a short time frame and they are learning pretty quickly, the other horsemen have had centuries to learn what Magic is managing to put together in so little time but they're doing an excellent job at it. While yes Magic still has anxiety and mini emotional breakdowns they are much better at dealing with things now. Calmer, Magic handles political situations a lot better than they did before and is still leading the group and coming up with fantastic ideas to move their plan forward in creating peace in the world. As the story goes on it would seem that there were gaps in what the Horseman were doing before and Magic is helping greatly with a fresh perspective.

The group is very supportive of Magic, they follow Magic's plans, back them up, and encourage them at every turn. Magic is very loved and accepted by the group except for Arrie he still has his issues things are up and down with those two and things are hinted at with Arrie but the full story has yet to come out. As for the others, as Magic has gotten more comfortable with themselves they have gotten more comfortable with Dea, Nine, and Connie. Dea and Nine have a relationship with Magic separate of course (they are Dea's mate but they and Nine really click) but Dea and Nine also have a relationship together with Magic and that gets explored in this book. Connie and Magic are just so happy together it's really adorable and some relationship issues pop up but are quickly addressed. Everyone is really great together and there are times when even Arrie stops being a pain, I loved how loving the group is with Magic, it was just too sweet.

The major plot twist in the previous book was finding out Magic had a twin brother and that continues in this book. Magic and Aki get closer in this book, they spend a lot of time together getting to know each other and work on a plan for the war. The fighting with the Supernatural Council (the SC) who is corrupt and determined to cause chaos in the world, is getting worse. Not only are they not helping with the New Orleans' vampires, but they also aren't doing anything about the supernatural hate crimes that have continued to pop up in recent days, and they are actively plotting something horrible. The politics sound crazy difficult but it's not, the SC is full of corrupt supernaturals and humans that are determined to take over, the Fae Queen is also somewhere in the middle of that mess while the Horsemen have created an alternative council bringing everyone they can onto a council to achieve peace. The humans and supernaturals are so integrated and then it's faction against faction, it all makes for an interesting if not messing political plot.

Not everything was about politics. I love getting a better look at fae magic, seeing Magic figures things out and explain fae magic like it was a science, was unique. Other supernatural species were introduced in this book, more a little more in-depth than the others but still interesting all the same. I would love to see more about the lesser-known supernatural communities and how Magic is tied to interacts with them. I saw the plot twist coming, all the clues were there and I was screaming at Magic and the gang to pay attention or not to do something. The end result still killed me, I can't believe I have to wait for the next book to have some kind of resolve. There were a few confusing moments in the book, especially the ending but I'm hoping to clear some of those up in the next book.

The Dead Horseman was another great addition to the series and I absolutely loved it. I'm so invested in these wonderful characters and the plot is creative and refreshing, what's not to love? Dead Horseman ended on a cliffhanger that is gonna leave me with a book hangover for days but of course, it was worth it. It looks like the fourth book should be along sooner rather than later and I can't say how thankful I am for that, I look forward to jumping back into the Horseman's world.

This series is by far one my favorites to date. I am a queer female and it is so hard to find a truly queer RH novel these days. I try to support this author wherever I can just because I loooove the way she does character development. We get to see this with Magic in the third installment of the Horsemen’s Harem Saga. In every page of this series, we get to see more and more of who Magic will be turning into as they come into their own its beautiful to watch. The heat definitely gets turned up in this installment and it is ohh so good.

Arrie is annoying me and I can’t wait until we get to hear what his deal is. Dea is just so dreamy. Connie is just too adorable for life. And Nine my favorite character is doesn’t get as much love or scenes in this one (at least relative to the rest of the book since Magic takes off on an adventure with their brother for a lot of the middle).

Just as a warning there is a MAJOR CLIFFHANGER in this novel that just guts you. But I will be interested to see how the author spins this.

This review was originally published on Myth and Magic Book Club

Myth: 3/5

While book two left us on quite the cliffhanger, the beginning of book three was slightly unsatisfying in moving that part of the story forward. It absolutely becomes a critical part of the story, but Aki really doesn’t jump into the story for real until about a third of the way through.

This is definitely the ‘preparing for battle’ story and Magic is gathering an army. I enjoyed the journey through supernatural species that this took us on.

Magic is well on their way to realizing their full horsemen relationship dream, with one notable holdout. So while we get plenty of action between the relationship part of the harem, there is still the will they, won’t they dance throughout the story.

Magic: 3/5

Magic also continues to work to embrace their magic and forms, really coming into all parts of themselves, with lots of love and support from the horsemen harem they’ve started.

Overall: 3/5

Prepare yourself for another cliffhanger that leaves you wanting to know what happens next in Magic’s journey.

This book has a lot of development built into it so it's long. It also ends on a cliff hanger, but so did the last one. If you're the type who NEEDS TO KNOW immediately then wait until the series is finished because these endings will irritate you.

I enjoy reading about gender fluidity and polygamous relationships. There is no single way or correct way, I appreciate the discussions and inner monologs throughout the chapters.

I'm also a fan of the author as a human. She engages with her readers on social media, is honest with her progress as a writer, and is authentic in her humanity. I look forward to reading the next installment.

This is the third book in this series and it is a complete thrill! The horsemen have discovered huge secrets about the SC and their plans for the future. Magic is trying to adjust to the knowledge she has a twin brother. This book has so much going on, I did not want to put it down for a second. My favorite aspect of the book is the drama between Magic and Arrie. I switch from loving him to hating him. He has broke my heart repeatedly throughout this book. I need to know what he is hiding! That cliffhanger was freaking brutal and I cannot wait to find out what happens next.

AHHHHHH! My poor kindle got the brunt of that ending!
There had better be a good reason... humph.

Ending aside, another amazing instalment into Magic and the horsemen. I enjoyed the developments between Magic and Conquest and their relationship 🥵
War... Well he better decide soon, he's not currently on my good side!
Death and Famine are oh so beautiful, I love their relationship between each other and with Magic.

Book 4 needs to hurry and get here so I can get my horseman fix ❤

Being a Horseman of the Apocalypse isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. Magic is still learning and building their strengths and unfortunately a war is on the horizon. Finding the time to prepare for war and learn the ends and outs of all things Magic has its challenges but the Horseman all team up to get it done. But mind the cliffy at the end because it threw me for a flippin’ loop!

Thank you, for making me cry harder than I have in a long time. I’ve become so emotionally invested in these characters and their growth. Reading the end of the book where they’re finally winning… and then reading that last page? My heart is broken and I CANNOT WAIT for the fourth book to come out!!

OK, so this is an awesome telling of the Horsemen. A must read series.

Now that Magic has her powers, she must learn to use them in time to save the world from an army of Vampires and Fae. Unbeknownst to her, there is evil working against her right in her midst. Will she be able to save the world and those she loves? You'll have to read this fabulous story to find out.

While at times wordy, Kilmari once again drew us into Magic's world. I will say - this is not for the faint of heart. The cliffhanger got me even though I expect them at this point.

Looking forward to the next one and thank you for bringing us along on this journey!
