Higher Love: Climbing and Skiing the Seven Summits

Rate this book
In 2006 Kit DesLauriers made history by becoming the first person to climb--and then ski--from the summit of each continent’s highest mountain, the famed Seven Summits. Centered on this quest, her book Higher Love represents a hero’s journey, rich with personal insights, life-threatening consequences, and a thrilling crescendo. Spanning seven continents in just two years, this deeply personal memoir recounts Kit’s initially secret journey that would change her life forever. From braving Antarctica’s bone-chilling temperatures to trudging through an African rainforest, from corn snow on the slopes of Australia to blue ice on Everest, Kit leads you up each mountain and gives you a heart-racing ride back down. This candid, fast-paced story shows how in¬spiration, teamwork, and honoring our true nature blazes the trail to every summit, on or off the mountain.

The way Kit chose to write this book had me hooked right from the start. The story was easy to follow, with the perfect mix of adventure and honesty. Her strong willed courage, quiet determination, and steadfast belief in herself had me rooting for her; as I read more and more, I saw parts of myself within her story. I absolutely loved the crossover between raising Alta and climbing/skiing peaks. Alta’s story wove so perfectly in Kit’s journey - which only makes sense because they ran in a pack together from the start. I came away from this read feeling inspired and empowered. What an incredible book!

I really enjoyed Kit's story. I found it inspiring, and informative. I live and play in the Sierra Nevada at Lake Tahoe. I felt a real kinship with her love and need for outdoor adventure, especially in the mountains.

Each climb was unique in it's own way. She really did a wonder job of bringing to life the characters that helped her achieve her goal. Kit also painted a vivid picture of the cultural difference on each continent. A fascinating read on my levels, I highly recommend this book.

Excellent

A very good read for skiers, climbers, armchair or actual, alike. If you do neither, go along for the ride. Amazing.

I have never read a more spot on account of what the mountains mean to me than through Kit’s thoughts in this book. She is quite literally the person I hope to grow into someday and leads the life of intentionality and adventure I strive to live. In short, everyone should read this.
