Which Bible verses support that doctrine? All good theology is grounded in the Word of God. Yet sometimes it’s hard to keep track of which scriptures support certain doctrines. That’s where The Essential Scriptures comes in. With an easy-to-use handbook format, this reference work moves through the main headings of systematic theology, offering full quotations of the biblical verses that undergird various doctrines. No more jumping back and forth between multiple sources. The Essential Scriptures puts it all in one place, providing not only the biblical support but also a learned exposition of how those passages serve as the basis for the doctrine under discussion. Drawing from the literal and trustworthy New American Standard Bible, scholar and theologian Kevin Zuber gives you the biblical underpinnings for every doctrine, organized around the primary headings of systematic theology: Every pastor, scholar, student, and lover of theology needs this book in their library. The Essential Scriptures will be a classic that generations of theologians turn to again and again.
I recommend this book to those who want to understand key doctrines and how the Scriptures systematically present them. I think this is also a good step before reading a work of systematic theology because of its concise treatment of each doctrine; it gives a good understanding without being exhaustive. Many church members might be intimidated by the size of a systematic theology, but could take this up and find it very straightforward and helpful.
Dr. Kevin Zuber provides a truly approachable, excellent work of systematic theology for Christians of every walk. Instead of depending heavily on commentary (which is nonetheless clear and concise), the strength of “Essential Scriptures” lies in providing the key theological texts and allowing them to speak for themselves.
It works well to read as a trek through the Bible’s key texts and doctrines, but it works just as well when searching for a specific subject.
I used to keep a small notebook with key biblical texts written in columns. Now that I own this book, I’ll simply be able to take notes in the margins and the empty pages in the back.
This book is well worth owning for someone pursuing a deeper understanding of God’s word and who may not have time to read a 50lb theology textbook.
The Essential Scripture: A Handbook of the Bible Texts for Key Doctrines by Kevin D. Zuber is a fantastic "systematic theology" text that focuses on the actual Word of God rather than a commentary of it. It is so refreshing to see major doctrines supported by full texts of Scripture (NASB) as the primary purpose of the book. God's Word is printed right there on the page - not a parenthesized list of references to look up. This is an absolutely brilliant resource and amazing as a devotional aid as well.
Quite apart from the stellar content, this publication of the book is beyond beautiful in its design and implementation. The typefaces, page layout, graphic design, color coordination - this edition is a masterclass in book design.
Strong reformed doctrine look at major theology points. Mixes it lots of Scripture. A little clunky to read. I used it alongside my main devotional each morning this past year.
