Resident Evil is entering its 30th anniversary this year, 2026. What better way to celebrate then to drench myself in the history of the series through the different mediums. Whether it’s admiring the gnarly art of graphic novels, reading the actual novelizations of the vast stories in the universe, playing some of the previous games, even appreciating the CG straight to home videos and reliving the Milla Jovovich questionable movies, I want to live and breathe the BIOHAZARD in. Especially in anticipation of the next chapter: REQUIEM.

Starting off with I don’t remember the Netflix resident evil show infinite darkness too well. What I can recount are my feelings at the time. My major critique is it felt like it was one of the CG films cut into four parts to make it fit a TV format. I believe it suffered with that choice making it slower pace and honestly a bit boring. Nothing ramps up til the final episode.

The graphic novel, ‘Infinite Darkness the Beginning’ is a prequel to that series. I do remember it coming after the show (4 years 😬), I put it off for a while after my underwhelming viewing of the show. Now with consuming all things Resident Evil for this 30th anniversary year celebration I must say I quite enjoyed this side adventure.

I know fans get tired of Leon, but I do have a soft spot for this iconic character. I haven’t got tired of his inclusion, I do agree on the critiques to bring the other legacy characters more to the front. We follow him in the story as he’s investigating bomb threats in the city of Pittsburgh. Since this is a short form graphic novel, the detective work and action scenes sparsed through are well paced. A central mystery tied to horrific events a team with Leon need to solve.

This affair has an interesting political slant that matches our current world today but in a different font. It’s not heavy-handed commentary, it’s like a small undercurrent and reflection. Resident Evil has always had shady governments and tales of terrorism. It’s just now going through a pandemic in real life and our leaders actions, this fictional world doesn’t seem so absurd in it’s practice.

Granted the ending, although lackluster it does set up the television show. I wish this prequel comic was the show itself or at least have made it to prelude of the project itself. Making it eight episodes instead of four, we would’ve gotten a grander picture. It can’t technically be standalone as well, there is mostly closure, although open ended. It was fun regardless with gritty noire art style and human touches to the story. The way a tv show should be.

Keith R.A. DeCandido’s Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness – The Beginning is exactly the kind of tie-in comic that fans of the franchise hope for: atmospheric, cinematic, fast-paced, and genuinely entertaining from beginning to end.
Set before the events of the 2021 animated series, the story follows Leon S. Kennedy as he investigates a bombing at the Carnegie Museum of Art alongside the Pittsburgh PD. Naturally, things spiral into full-blown biohazard horror when corpses begin rising from the dead, and the narrative quickly expands into a conspiracy involving cults, viral outbreaks, and political intrigue. If you know Resident Evil, you already know the ingredients — but the execution here is strong enough to make the ride worthwhile.
What really elevates the comic is the artwork. The Italian artists involved do a fantastic job capturing the mood and visual identity of Resident Evil: dark corridors, sudden bursts of violence, expressive action scenes, and a very cinematic sense of pacing. Several sequences genuinely feel like storyboards for a live-action horror thriller.
True, the plot doesn’t reinvent the franchise formula. Veteran Resident Evil fans will recognize many familiar themes and narrative beats. But honestly, that’s not necessarily a flaw. The comic understands exactly what kind of story it wants to tell and delivers it with confidence and style.
Overall, this is a very solid Resident Evil prequel: tense, visually impressive, and highly enjoyable for longtime fans of Leon Kennedy and Capcom’s zombie-filled universe.

●Resident Evil Infinite Darkness: The Beginning●

A Resident Evil graphic novel set before the Netflix show Infinite Darkness, I was so hyped about this book as soon as I heard about it. I'm so glad it lived up to my expectations, with cook artwork and an intriguing story, it's perfect for fans of the franchise.

Since the graphic novel is a prequel to the show, we get to see hints and references to the future, as well as finally finding out what mission Leon Kennedy was on before being dragged to the White House. It's an action packed and gory story, with a straightforward plot but classic villain motives that make it a great read.

I adored seeing Leon's vulnerable side, especially when he kept visiting the hospital and checking in on people he's only known for a day or two. It definitely shows his humanity, yet he's still as badass as ever. His iconic one liners bring his character to life, and I loved it.

The ending leaves just where Infinite Darkness picks up, with Leon going to the White House, and wraps up pretty well in terms of this prequel story. Overall, well worth reading for both fans of the show and games.

5/5 🌟

Before Leon S. Kennedy gets imbedded in a mysterious hacking incident at the White House, he is sent to investigate an explosion at a Pittsburgh Museum. Now, he must try to track down the bomber and the bombs as it becomes clear the T-virus is being used in the explosions.

This is a prequel for the Infinite Darkness television series, so there isn't much earth shattering or huge revelations. It is a good mini-series that sets up what Leon was doing directly before the show. The art style is good, but sometimes feels just off in how Leon is presented in the games. No other characters from the game appear, but there is a good cast of characters.

It does feel like the story is missing something, but since it is a prequel to the television series which I haven't seen yet, so it might be more flushed out there. There is a few dialogue boxes in the comic that are hard to tell who is speaking. Overall a solid comic book, but nothing earth shattering.

4.5/5, totally solid, zero complaints. Great artwork, fun tie in story. I really loved how it showed just how much government coverups and corruption there is and how that’s impacted what the people of this universe know and understand about terrorism. I understand from a game perspective why they don’t, but I wish that angle would be explored a lot more in the RE universe. I find it very compelling, with clear connections to government corruptions and coverups and gaslighting we experience in our own universe. It also hit a little harder because it takes place in Pittsburgh, where I visit frequently. Seeing these real Pittsburgh locations used in this novel as sites of terrorist attacks just hits harder when you know exactly where these places are.

Feltűnik benne a tábornok is, aki később komoly szerepet játszik a filmben.

It's Resident Evil. People turn into zombies and get shot in the head a lot. Starring Leon S. Kennedy.

The art's good for a comic, but I would've liked to see a more handsome Leon. The story is easy to follow but jumps all over the place like everything happens within 15 minutes. There's a sense of urgency there, but it's hectic as hell. Guess that also works for RE.

Have not seen the animated series yet.

Pretty short and sweet! Scratched the Resident Evil itch I've had in prep for spooky season soon 😈 Leon had some crazy accurate aim pew pewing those zombies! I'm just surprised they chose Pittsburgh of all places to be the setting 😹

This book isn't a great tie-in considering it forgets the key element of it has already been figured out since before it's supposed to take place (the point of the outbreaks was to test a failure of an inhibitor when the Mad Dogs unit already has a working one in the show)
