Just like that...little Devon was gone..A relaxing day at the beach turned into a absolute nightmare with the blink of an eye. Dr Clair Mercer sat on the beach with her eyes on her son...trying to listen to her husband's conversation with his girlfriend on his cellphone...her thoughts wander...a wave sweeps her son away..just that quick..

The death of her son rips their family apart. As they struggle with their grief this tore at my heart. Clair is determined to make her herself and her husband pay for the loss of their child. The guilt is overwhelming..to the point that she can't function...but she must, even if it means murder...

A story of loss, love, acceptance and realizing what is important in your life. A very quick read that had me reaching for the tissues.

The writing was beautiful and the journey was highly emotional. Thank you so much to Kristen Crusoe and Suzy Approved Tours for my gifted copy.

Beautiful, heartbreakingly beautiful! The Wave not only symbolizes the sneaker wave that took 4 year old Devon, but the waves of grief and guilt as well. Watching two people completely fall apart and then build back up again was nothing short of wonderful.

When that sneaker wave came and stole Devon from that beach, it was the beginning of the end for Clair. She couldn't handle living without her beautiful little boy. She also couldn't handle her husband moving on with his life as if nothing had happened. So she tried to kill him and then herself. She failed at both and then was forced to confront her second chance at life.

The Wave by Kristen Crusoe begins with every Mother’s worst nightmare. A family day at the beach turns tragic when a sneaker wave takes Clair and Adam’s autistic son. Despite extensive searches, he is never recovered.

Clair struggles to believe her son is gone, all the while living with the day to day grief at the physical loss of her child. While she blames her husband for their son’s death, she also knows she will never forgive herself. Losing all hope, she poisons her husband and attempts to drown herself. Her attempt on both of their lives is unsuccessful.

Through therapy, though involuntary, Clair begins to work through the layers of her trauma and grief to try to forgive herself. It isn’t until she receives a diagnosis of terminal cancer that she realizes how much she wants to live.

Reading this, I’m sure this all sounds like a depressing mess. While the events that occur are tragic, this book is more about the hope that comes with healing. Clair’s self discovery, seemingly at the end of her life, is a beautiful journey. Her marriage with Adam also takes on many different forms throughout the book. Though no hero, I was struck by Adam’s devotion to Clair. Their path to forgiveness is a murky one, but one worth reading.

Waves aren’t merely the product of water, they are created by wind, forming a swell, which then finds its breaking point on the shoreline. “But the wave doesn’t cease to exist, it returns to water. And so we continue on as well.” For a beautiful story about loss and finding the strength and hope of moving forward, check out The Wave by Kristen Crusoe.

Loss and grief as a catalyst to change and eventual healing.
Clair and Adam's marriage was crumbling due to the strains and pressures of raising an autistic son. She feels Adam has never been able to fully embrace his son while he is feeling left out by the connection their son has with Clair. Then while at the beach an argument causes them to lose focus on their boy and a sneaker wave takes the boy away. This event leads to another near tragic event that leaves Clair in a mental ward and Adam in the hospital. From here the story explores the themes of loss, blame, separation, forgiveness and reconciliation, not only of each other but also of themselves. Their journeys encompass the many waves of emotion one can experience while on the path to becoming whole.
This is one very well written debut! Although hard at times, I really enjoyed the journey these two take. I felt the angst and sadness that permeates Clair's thoughts as well as the desperation in Adam's actions.
There's a lot going on between the covers of this book and I highly recommend this fully realized story filled with emotion and heart.

Clair, her husband Adam and little boy Devon go on a much needed day out to the beach as a way to reconnect from their recent troubles. However while they are at the beach a wave comes and sweeps Devon away during an unsupervised moment. The heartbreak and pain that Clair suffers as a result lead her to attempt to murder Adam and trying to commit suicide herself by going back to the beach where her boy disappeared and letting a wave take her too.

Her suicide attempt is unsuccessful as she is spotted in time and her husband is hospitalised due to the poisoning she inflicted on him. As a result she is admitted to a psychiatric ward where she is to stay until she is deemed fit to return to society. The problem is that Clair wants to die. She can’t cope without her son and cannot see a way to move forward. With help from her psychiatrist Jet, she begins to open up and confront all the issues that surround her marriage, Devon and herself.

This is a spectacularly emotional read which had me in tears on a few occasions. It’s every mother’s worst nightmare so I really felt for Clair and the reasons behind what she did to Adam. When it becomes clear that Devon had autism, this added layer throws light onto her blaming her husband for Devon’s death. She thinks he couldn’t cope with their boy’s added issues and becomes obsessed with trying to pin blame.

We see Clair go on a journey to try and come to terms with what happened to her and also her reaction to it. As she begins to unpick everything that happens she slowly starts to see little chinks of hope and I enjoyed watching her grow in that way.

The book is beautifully written and the author has brilliantly portrayed a grieving mother and her broken mind and heart. The way the author writes about how having a child with autism affects parents’ relationships is superb and insightful and I could see how it can really test a marriage.

I read it quickly as I was so absorbed in the writing, willing Clair to find some peace from her mental turmoil. It’s hard to read at times but the direction the story takes means a balance is reached. A lot happens within the pages but I loved this book and thoroughly recommend it.

⁣
An emotional and complex story of the grief of a child and and the overwhelming life changing moments that follow, from attempted murder and suicide, actions very much within control, to a devastating diagnosis, removing control and replaced with fate.⁣
⁣
I found the writing to be hugely erratic, I was unsure many times of the length of time between each chapter, and the time passed since the loss of the couple's young son. I also found the storyline, while adding to the complexity, too overwhelming, so much happened in such a short book. ⁣
⁣
However I also see the way the author has evolved Clair's mind through the erratic writing, if Clair's thoughts and actions were volatile of course the story would be too.⁣
⁣
I would have expected and loved to see a longer, more powerful Psychiatric stay for Clair, that story would have been impressive.⁣
⁣
There was a recurring theme of death, which was written with real empathy, but also a theme of never giving up. Never knowing what is around the corner, or behind the next wave, but carrying on, fighting regardless.⁣

MY THOUGHTS: First time I've heard of this author and it will be the first time you have heard of her. This is Kristen's first novel and she started her journey in the writing world out right. She delivered a fast pace Suspenseful novel. Great characters that developed well throughout the book. Wrote a thought provoking book that will emotionally impact the reader to create a strong bond with the main protagonist. Gives the right amount of drama to keep you on the edge of your seat and hooked from the first page to the last.
If you're looking for a powerful book to read get this book on Amazon and hurry !

Kristen Crusoe, the author of “The Wave” has written a unique, intriguing, and suspenseful novel. The genres for this book are Literary Fiction, and Suspense, and Thriller. The timeline for this story is set in the author’s present, and goes to the past, with a possible glimpse at the future, when it pertains to the characters or events. The author describes her characters as complex and complicated as well as flawed. There is an essence of mystical expression in this story as well. The author discusses the road to redemption, second chances, communication, loyalty, and the importance of family and love.

On what starts to be a lovely day, Clair, Adam, and their 4-year-old autistic child are at the beach. As Clair and Adam are arguing, their child seems to be swept away in an unusual wave at the beach. This symbolic and literal wave has taken the life of Clair and Adam’s son. Clair heads to the cold waters, hoping the wave will take her to her son, after attempting to poison Adam. Clair is in a psychiatric hospital, anticipating what will be her life or death.

Adam tries to make sense of what has gone on and is willing not to press charges. As more tragedy enters their lives, there is a quest for answers and peace. I recommend this unusual and thought-provoking book to others.

My English teacher heart loved the symbolism so prevalent in this book. The title doesn't just refer to the ocean wave that took Clair and Adam's autistic four-year-old son Devon. It also encapsulates the horrific waves of grief that the pair must ride on their journey to healing.

Clair and Adam have had some troubles, so a relaxing day at the beach sounds like the perfect getaway. While briefly unsupervised, their son Devon is caught up in a wave, and they lose him. I hope to never experience such a horrific loss, and Clair's actions call to mind Anticlea, the mother of Odysseus, who so yearned for her missing son that she filled her pockets with stones and walked into the ocean, letting the waves take her to the Land of the Dead. Clair blames her husband and attempts to take his life, and of course she blames herself and attempts to take her life as well.

This book was difficult to read at times as Clair's grief was so palpable. What follows is a deeply emotional journey of grief, sadness, and ultimately, healing. Excellent read.

About the book
The Wave is told in the voices of the two main characters, Clair and Adam. They are husband and wife and due to a tragic accident have lost their son.

Clair blames Adam for her son being swept away in a sneaker wave. Clair tries to poison Adam and then kill herself.

In a psychiatric ward, Clair tries to come to terms with her loss and adjust to an uncertain future.

My Thoughts:

This book started out with such a rich description about a sneaker wave and a wonderfully sweet child that had me hooked. The rich descriptions continued throughout the entire read making this a difficult book to put down.

In this debut novel, Kristen really digs into so many emotions that I suspect one would feel after such an incredible tragedy of losing a child. Blame, anger, sadness, and anguish all tied into a complete sense of hopelessness.

This book deals so beautifully with change and the dynamics of marriage. The author tells that story brilliantly in the rich character developments of Clair and Adam.

To me this is a unique combination of a deeply moving yet face paced read.

What a roller-coaster of a wave of complex emotional turmoil this book was, and so aptly named. A sneaker wave destroys Clair and Adam's life when it devastatingly sweeps away their autistic son whilst at the beach. This book is so much more, as it then explores the grief and emotions experienced by Clair and Adam in the aftermath of this event, but also dealing with the discovery they their son Devon was autistic leading up to the horrific event. Adam finds the diagnosis of Devon's autism hard to take and the couple slow push each other away. Throughout the storyline you can feel the turbulent waves of emotion and grief they both experience.
Written in three parts, the second part is Clair on a journey of self discovery as she tries to find herself again and heal her grief.
The third part is Adam and Clair discovering each other once again, forgiving and coming to terms with what has happened, riding the waves out to see hope and new chapter beginning.

This book wrecked me a little bit. This is definitely an emotional read, and it is one that I will provide some content warnings for (see below). It is a parent’s worst nightmare and their biggest fear coming true on the page. Crusoe takes that terrifying story and brings life to it, providing character insight into the situation, and bringing the reader on a journey.

The author has truly written a beautiful story that is hard to put down. The character journeys are wonderful, and Crusoe brings so much detail and depth to them. I found this to be a quick read, and one that I didn’t want to put down. I needed to know what was going to happen.

I would recommend this to readers that enjoy emotional storylines with character-driven stories!

I was provided a gifted copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.

"Turbulence precedes transformation. The moment we crash onto shore or up against a rock. But the wave doesn't cease to exist, it returns to water. And so we continue on as well." The Wave

This story is told from the POV of Clair and Adam. The descriptive writing had me feeling all the emotions. I have lost sight of my child at the beach so I can understand Claire's emotions. Who is to say that I wouldn't have made the same decisions as Claire if I lost my child.

Just as Claire is coming to terms with the loss of her son, her life is again turned upside down. Claire and Adam take a journey of grief, sadness, and healing that left me with an emotional hangover. TW: suicide and mental illness

The Wave is an amazing debut by @kristenlauthor. If you enjoy character driven stories, then I highly recommend The Wave

Thank you to @reddoorbooks for letting me be a part of the #blogtour for this new title by Kristen Crusoe. This book is a rollercoaster of emotions. It’s a very clever story not only about the grief that comes with losing a child, but also the impact on a couple’s lives when a child is diagnosed with autism. Trying to do the best for their child, to understand the condition and their needs, whilst also highlighting where a couple’s needs sometimes get pushed the side, with very sad results, is a theme that runs through this book. The description throughout really brings you into the character’s thoughts and allows you to follow their journey alongside them. It was a good read for me and I think it’s a great debut novel for Kristen.

What a debut! The Wave was a story of loss, grief, finding oneself, love and friendship. When Clair and Adam’s son Devon is swept away by the ocean during a beach trip their lives are forever changed. Their relationship has been far from perfect but the death of their son puts even more of a strain on their marriage. The novel starts out with a bang which drew me in pretty quickly. Clair and Adam were both very unlikable characters to me for various reasons but I think it was meant to be that way. This was a very character driven novel which I thought was perfect for the storyline. I will say, there are a few TW that I wish I knew about before starting (suicidal ideation, cancer) just so that I could prepare myself. But I thought this was a great debut and I’m excited to see what Kristen comes out with next!

This was my sixteenth book I chose via the Reedsy Discovery program, for which I am the single approved reviewer for this new book. I chose it because the synopsis and preview drew me in. This review also appears on Reedsy.

The Premise
After losing her son in a freak accident when a wave pulls him out to sea, Clair tries to murder her husband and then to commit suicide. Both her attempts are futile, and Clair winds up in her psychiatric unit, while her husband Adam soon recovers and is willing to forgive her and attempt reconciliation. But a rift has grown between the two of them that seems insurmountable, as she blames him for his apparent infidelity and emotional distancing from their autistic son, as well as his untimely death while they were both distracted. Upon receiving a bad health diagnosis, she flees, with Adam soon in pursuit. Can she find her way, and will their journey lead them back to each other?

The Pros
This was a powerful and heart-wrenching tale of motherhood, grief, illness, self-discovery and redemption.

We meet Clair at the lowest point of her life, after she has taken drastic measures as a result of her unbearable grief.

It was gripping to see Adam move so quickly past his confusion and anger at what she had tried to do to him, and into forgiveness and acceptance. I was in awe at his devotion to her, despite her fragile state and his characterisation as a womanizer who did not even seem to like her much when he first found himself “trapped” into marriage by social expectations.

I loved the symbolism of the wave, and of the overriding ebbs and flows of their relationship:

[…] Looking back, if he had been paying attention, perhaps there had been clues, not to the ocean’s madness, but to their own, his and Clair’s, and their slipping away from what mattered, towards mutually ensured destruction.

Motherhood transformed Clair from a mathematically-focused, formula-driven, rule-follower woman to open her heart enormously and accept the vagaries of emotion to love and accept her son, particularly as she had to adapt to his special needs. Then, his loss plunged her into a realm of unbearable despair. This was followed by her diagnosis, which made her lose her sense of self. Clair finds solace and healing through group therapy:

She knew about their hopes, and fears, their anger, heartbreaks and self-doubts. Their pain, physical and emotional, was her pain. […] Their stories changed each week as their self-identities reconfigured. Bits and pieces of biographies morphed into brighter, more capable, happier selves.

Though the focus is primarily on Clair and her journey to self-discovery, we also see Adam’s point of view as he pursues her, trying to catch the ephemera of her essence before she slips out of his grasp forever.

The story was powerful, and sweeps you away with its evocative descriptions, though at times I did wish for a wee bit more restraint of this in order to propel the plot forward a little faster. I was eager to see what would happen, as the suspense mounts in the “chase” of self and partner.

The writing is emotional and poetic, and there are breathtaking, profound moments that stay with you long after you close the novel, such as:

What is known is that for each of us, we find our breaking point. Turbulence precedes transformation. The moment we crash onto shore or up against a rock. But the wave doesn’t cease to exist, it returns to water. And so we continue on as well.

Conclusion
Overall, this was a thought-provoking novel that is unsettling and at the same time brings peace. The author captures feelings and scenery beautifully, and the plot takes you on an emotional rollercoaster from trauma to triumph. The symbolism is interwoven throughout, and winds itself around tragedy, leading to an eventual healing and reconciliation.

The relationship at its centre is brilliantly portrayed, showing flawed characters on both sides that must find a way to meet in the middle despite their grief. There is also a mystical element that is reminiscent of Greek mythology, and the writer’s style leads you through the darkness into the light, bringing life to the story. If you enjoy Jodi Picoult’s writing style, this will also resonate with you. I highly recommend to anyone, but adult female readers may appreciate it the most.

This book….wow. So well written and I could not put it down. I loved all the emotions, and wanted to wrap Claire in a huge hug.

When Claire’s son is taken out by a wave, it triggers such a deep emotional and mental break in Claire. She attempts suicide, tries to poison her husband. But she eventually gets the help she needs and begins to heal. I loved seeing her growth.

Incredible book and I highly recommend it.

Rounded up to 3.5.

An aptly titled book as this isn’t just about a devastating wave that destroys a family, but it also explores the ‘wave’ of emotions that both Clair and Adam must face during a truly heartbreaking moment.

I’m always drawn to books that feature autism, as a parent of a child with autism myself, so I was interested to see how it would feature throughout the book. Whilst it’s not the main issue that the book revolves around it is detailed as a way of showing how Clair and Adam drifted apart during their marriage. Adam struggled with Devon’s diagnosis and you can clearly see why he acts the way he does as a coping mechanism.

I will admit, from reading the synopsis I did think this was going to be heavily focused on Clair’s trial, but something happens halfway through (I won’t give details) that I was not expecting in the slightest but worked so well to really explore Clair’s character even further and the journey she embarks upon in order to finally grieve and let go of her son.

It’s an emotional book with some hard hitting subjects but the second half of the book, as Clair goes on this journey, is so beautifully written and really shows how both her and her husband Adam begin to grow and discover that this isn’t the end…it’s just the beginning!

Overall this book took a delicate and tender look at grief and learning to move on, however please be aware that there are some tough subjects which may cause distress.

Right from the start tragedy strikes and changes Clair’s life forever. Even with the heartbreaking events this novel pulls you in and keeps your attention the entire time. I love how we got POV from both Clair and Adam even though Clair was more of the focal point. It was interesting to see what they thought about each other with the events that happened. I enjoyed the writing style and learning about past events throughout the story. The Wave takes you on an emotional journey of loss, grief, forgiveness, love, and self discovery. What a great debut
