I like the idea of this book and I like the action sequences, they are well done and do pull you in.

I did feel the story itself is a bit loose and doesn't really nit very well together.

I think there is room for the world building to develop and there is definitely a need to flesh out the characters in future books.

There is an opportunity for the next book to really kick on, but if the world and characters don't hold me more than this short story, I feel I will be left disappointed

Samurai: The Three Sons is a great start for author Timothy McCallum. Planting the seeds for future books, he does a nice job of creating a world that combines elements of feudal Japan (samurai vs ninjas), mystical lands and creatures, anime like battles (full of mana charged blasts), and more. A heavy dose of brotherly camaraderie and a menacing big bad (All hail, Lord Cortex!) also help to round out out the story nicely. Can't wait to see what happens next in the world of Samurai.

This one was an odd story that sometimes didn't seem to know whether it wanted to be a Samurai sword and sorcery epic or an opening chapter in a "the boys go off to war" story. It's also a little long on action and short on plot hooks, but it was a fun read and the ending promises more stories in the series so maybe by then it'll have decided what it wants to be. I hope so, because this young writer shows a lot of promise.
